This actually works better when re-reading than it did the first time. I'd recommend reading it after the fourth story--maybe even the fifth--rather than after the third. James' development over the course of those stories makes his time in the Maze more poignant.

I thought this was an interesting look at James trying to finally face his responsibilities. But I do find it odd how James seems to understand what everyone is thinking in the scenes the Maze shows him. I guess I can just explain that with magic. Otherwise he's a lot more perceptive than he's ever been before.

I do have a problem with the Sacrifices Arc in general at this point. Spoilers only for previous books. There is nothing about this story that can be spoiled. It is only an elaboration of a scene you're told about at the end of book 3.

From this part:
the Maze answered him, and dragged him on ruthlessly through Harry’s second year, when Harry had first broken his arm in a Quidditch game and then had to remain at the school over Christmas, thanks to the havoc that Tom Riddle, Voldemort’s younger self, had managed to wreak on his mind when he possessed Harry. Neither time had James visited Harry in the hospital wing.

From the second book (in the hospital wing during the Christmas after Tom Riddle's possession):
“Has anyone else been visiting me?” he asked Sirius. [...]
“Oh, of course,” said Sirius. “Malfoy every day—and he really does seem to be your friend, Harry, though Merlin knows why. Snivellus sometimes.” Sirius frowned as if he didn’t like that, but hadn’t yet come up with any arguments to refute it. “And Lily and James came yesterday. The Headmaster’s been in at least once a day to inquire about your health.”

Do you see? Either Sirius is lying (and since he's dead now I find it unlikely that would be explained) or something was missed/retconned. I'm pretty sure the latter. I think there was a quote at the beginning of the third book I don't feel like finding about Harry being angry they didn't visit that I just shrugged off as Harry being mistaken because he was still unconscious when they visited.

Nice interlude. Could have probably been included in the previous book since it's so short.

An interlude, focused on James, very short, shorter than some chapters. I like the Maze tho, it's nicely brutal, in a good way.

This is a chapter that really should have just been included in the third or fourth book. Given how long it takes for anything interesting to happen to Harry, it would have been nice to see the an interesting chapter dedicated to another character. That being said, James is made out to be so pathetic and devoid of responsibility in this arc that his one-shot at redemption could really only feel fulfilling if he has died during his trial or had been submitted to something half as painful as Lilly losing her magic.
