Lunatic’s Landing is an interesting entry for me, because on a craft level it’s very good, showcasing Kirrin's excellent writing skills. And yet it left me unsure why the events themselves were meant to matter.

At this point in The Ripple System, the writing remains solid and confident. The humor still works, the dialogue is sharp, and Kyle Kirrin continues to show strong structural control on a sentence-by-sentence level. From a technical standpoint, this series knows exactly what it’s doing.

The issue here is stakes... or the lack thereof.

Earlier books introduced pressure through things like Renown, world-first events, or even Ned simply trying to survive being universally disliked. In Lunatic’s Landing, those tensions are largely absent. The in-game event doesn’t meaningfully threaten the top guilds, especially not Ned’s, and real-world consequences still don’t exist. Ned remains independently wealthy, with no outside obligations pressing in. That makes it hard to care whether he’s exceptionally good at video game or just very good at video game.

Structurally, this book pulls the camera in tight. Ned, Frank, Darling, and House carry nearly everything, with the rest of OMEN mostly in the wings. That narrower focus works mechanically and allows the character dynamics to shine, particularly the camaraderie between Ned and Frank, which remains the emotional core of the series and is genuinely fun to spend time with.

But for me, strong execution can only go so far without narrative pressure. The most dangerous thing that can realistically be lost here is Frank, and while that would matter emotionally, the story never fully convinces me it’s truly on the table. While I like a good low stakes or cozy book just fine, the near absence of a core threat here, or even a decent villain, left me a little out in the cold.

Ultimately, Lunatic’s Landing is a book I enjoyed reading, but not one that compelled me. It’s well written, comfortable, and polished but lacks urgency. As a plot-first reader, that keeps it from landing higher for me, even though I can absolutely see this working better for readers who prioritize voice, humor, and character banter over momentum.

A solid entry with excellent craft, but one that made me pause and reassess what I’m actually here for as a reader. The sheer quality of the prose has me looking forward to book 7 but I am hoping to feel more from the next installment as a whole.

Couldn't really get past the premise of this catch up event. Pretty sure if any MMO tried to do something like this it would be the end of that MMO. Very imbalanced events.

No antagonist in this one.

At times there is maybe too many things pulled from WoW or other popular games. We've done pretty much all of the original WoW battlegrounds at this point. At one point the author narrates a basic old WoW rogue stunlock sequence, one that would likely be unnecessary given the situation. I don't mind nods but it's like the author wants to remind us he has gamer cred. The entire book leads to a pretty standard Alterac Valley match....

Ned getting more modern weapons every book while everyone else is stuck in dnd is weird. Went too far. Ned has too many unique advantages going on, why has no one else earned guns. Why does he have so many primary weapons?

Also leveling doesn't really make sense anymore. very inconsistent. Nina for example loses a large percentage of health from a stun opener, however even though she's higher level and better geared she can't seem to deal any damage, if we look at the MC he probably would have killed the enemy in a few hits at her level. These balance oddities and inconsistent application of the rules just really threw me off. Klein is all about balanced and fair play in previous books, now he's just doing whatever the hell I guess.

I feel like the player base would rebel at the event in general. For that fact alone every new facet of this books big event just throws me more and more out of it.

Kirrin attempts a Dawntrail and actually lands it. In a surprising twist after the climatic end of Book 5, the transition into EBO's first expansion feels less like a full on reset and more like a proper continuation. Kirrin's knack for witty dialogue is on full display and I was left smirking and laughing the whole time.

The integration of Frank into the cast of player-characters was handled well and his class is hilarious and also exceptionally creative in terms of class design and writing flexibility. It also gives the group the much needed main-tank with a personality that it lacked up til now.

There's also the buildup of a quiet antagonist in the background that I hope becomes a real threat in the future.

If I could level any criticisms it would be that we still have not seen a serious threat take Ned down a notch. He continues to win even when his plans go awry. Frank is always at serious risk and yet when he never gets taken 6 books in a row you get the impression he's not really in any danger at all.

I also hope EBO doesn't fall into the same trap that the games that inspired it did; leaving the old world behind to forge ahead into the new one. I'm quite curious to see what the playerbase in the smoldering remains of the Black Oasis looks like, and to see how Tyrann's kingdoms have developed now that he's no longer a mega-celebrity.

Very eager for book 7.

Ripple Alert! Kyle Kills it again!

I read this in one day, and I have not yet processed all the things, but holy smokes is everyone in for a ride.

Kyle had me cackling from line one, and it never really stopped from there. The banter was exceptional as always between all parties, but especially Ned and Frank. The pacing was excellent and kept me turning page after page to find out what happens. The new “zone,” game types described, and game mechanics (I love me some interesting mechanics and characters that can take advantage of them) had me itching to go fire up various games after I finished reading. There were tantalizing hints of things unanswered to drive us crazy with speculation about what’s to come. That cursed green moon was doing stupid green moon things looking very punchable and kickable. Frank learning to exist in corporeal form provided images we war between wishing we could unsee or play on an infinite loop. To summarize, normal.

This book includes the following: Beards, non-floof floofs, glittering sacs, turducken, metacarpals, math, lack of math, and cheese balls.
Read and find out.

The only con is I now have to wait for the next book. The reaction I imagine Kyle having when people start asking for book 7 immediately:

Honestly, it's just not hitting the same.

Was thinking about it and it could be that it really doesn't feel like free agency is going on. Feels more like the game has set up certain challenges and everyone is playing that.

Also, so far as MMO's go this one is the absolute worst. You can shoot up to high levels super quickly and even faster with 'catch up' mechanics rather than a slower grind to keep people playing the MMO to...make money!

The whole game - rather than being developed by huge teams of relatively faceless people like in real life - is developed by one freak with odd nipples. For some reason, this seems to be more of a common trope. Possibly to give a face to the company. Or show off bare feet and weird nipples. Not sure.

Definitely worth the read, not sure it quite matched the previous book.

Some super creative scenarios and boss fights, unique mechanics that manage not to recycle content from the previous books. I love how the different advancement mechanics interact with each other, making it more interesting than a single number going up. Specifically the tiers of gear "resetting" the bar for what is good whenever they advance.

I had been looking forward to going through some RPG character building style content at an accelerated rate with Frank, but it ended up feeling a bit too rushed to be satisfying. One of the strongest elements of the previous books was the really meaningful upgrade choices, and that was skimmed over a bit in some cases.

What else is there to say aside from this being a great series and another great book. If anyone is reading book six then they already know it’s funny, well paced, and everything else anyone can ask for.
Would I have preferred something other than the game mechanic that is featured in this book to push the plot forward. Yes I would like anything else.
Do I wish LitRPG authors could work in an end point for their books? Yes I do, sudden endings are getting really old.
All that taken into account I feel this is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, but since they don’t allow that here it’s just gotta be 5 stars.

Well-written but Story is sub-par

The story is dry, slow, boring, uneventful, and extremely short. Nothing really happens. The book is a major disappointment and quite pointless. Yes, some small things were set up, and they could be worth knowing for next book, but that is all the book has going for it: it MIGHT be crucial for the next book. The series has really fallen off and it doesn't feel worth it to keep purchasing additonal books.

Holy Frank! This was so fantastic! The first five books were a great and ended on a high note. It was a good end to the first arc of the story. If you're this far in the series, you know what happens to Frank and what that means is way way more laughs and such a fun buddy comedy of an adventure with Frank and Ned. This book was such an easy listen and so very enjoyable. I seriously need book 7 right now!

Hilarious and Fun

As always, the antics of Ned, Darling and their crew of misfits never fail to disappoint. If you read the first 5 books and think “Wow, I can’t possibly get enough of Frank and Mingo” then this is the book for you.

This book will make your teeth itch, and want to go out and buy a scooter and a fountain, guaranteed.

Join Team Frank - We Few Who Hate the Moon

In my opinion some series just drag on and at some point stop developing the characters. Kyle has done a great job not falling down that path. Instead the last few chapters had me reading as fast as I could, then Bam cliff hanger. I think Kyle might be harnessing his inner Frank Voice too much haha.

I still really like this series but the game is so screwed in Ned’s favour now it’s absurd. Some rebalancing happens but it isn’t enough.
I think for me it’s where can the series go from here. No one can play a game forever even just his friends alone leaving could push Ned out. So what more for the series?
Also how do the devs make money in this game except when Ned bribes them?

An absolute page turner full of action and adventure. Frank has a body now, but is still his normal self full of rage and with zero common sense.
Keeps you guessing what will happen next, can Ned pull of a stunt and save the day or will some of the other guilds muck up his plans.

The best of the books so far.

Getting to put the smack down on some lunar baddies!

Great stuff as always, the mechanics are of my favorite things about this series and it never fails to dissapoint. Lots of laughs throughout, and we get to see Ned and Darling actually have a date! Without Frank!

Ongoing Fun

Ned and the gang have an exciting couple of days conscripted into a war of the heavens. Good banter, clever plans, some solid character interactions, and flashy combat scenes made for an entertaining read.

I would expect anyone who made it this far into the series to enjoy this book. I personally didn't like this plot as much as the other books, but the banter continues to be top notch and I was laughing throughout the book. Overall, another really good book in the series.

This series is increasingly stepping towards the line with Frank and House and them becoming joke characters, rather than just comic relief. Like jump-rope, at times too much and at times fine.

It's a thing I see a few authors do, like Dakota Krout, where with each book they +1 something.

That last raid was… something. Not sure how I feel about it.

One of the biggest recommendations I can make is that as I was nearing the end I said to my partner, "I don't want it to end..." Kyle has done what many other authors struggle with: keeping the story engaging over several sequels. Now we wait until the next.
