كتاب ثري في كل صفحة منه
قليلة هي الكتب التي تأخذك تماما في رحلة معرفية مبهجة بشكل لا يصدق ، هذا الكتاب كان منها
ورغم اني اعتبر نفسي مثقفا واعرف شيئا ما عن ابن سينا وعن البيروني
إلا أن الكتاب كان يقدم معلومات في كل سطر حول شخصيتين مهمتين في تاريخنا الإسلامي وفي العالم.
والجميل في فكرة الكتاب هي فكرة المقارنة ، وعبر المقارنة يمكنك أن تعرف كل شخص حقا كيف كان
تفاجئت انهما عاشا في زمن واحد وفي منطقة جغرافية واحدة ، والاكثر من ذلك انهما تراسلا ولدينا مراسلات لهما
والمفاجئة هو ذلك التنافس المحموم بينهما والتباين الفكري الكبير الذي نتج عنه نفرة وتحاقد ومراقبة لبعضهما البعض من بعيد
وفي الوقت الذي كان ابن سينا يصدركتاب القانون في الطب ، ترى البيروني يؤلف القانون المسعودي، كأنه يرد عليه ويريد ان يجابهه
هاتان الشخصيتان المتباينتان جمعهما عالم مسلم لاحق هو نصير الدين الطوسي حين قرأ على مستوى عميق للاثنين وطور افكار الاثنين معا

هذه المقارنة بين العالمين جعلت الكتاب اشبه بمباراة سجالية ، يا ترى من سيفوز بها ، يأتي ابن سينا بالقانون في الطب والشفاء في الفلسفة وكتب اخرى بالعشرات ، ويأتي البيروني بما للهند من مقولة والقانون المسعودي والاثار الباقية وتصحيح مسافات الاماكن وعشرات الكتب التي ضاع كثير منها
في نظري ان ابن سينا فاز بالشوط الاول ، اقصد من سنة 1000 حتى سنة 1700 كان فيها ابن سينا هو اكثر العلماء الطبيعيين والفلسفيين المسلمين تأثيرا في الشرق والغرب، ولكن في القرون الأخيرة ومع الكشوف الجغرافية والفلكية والرياضية ، وتهذيب علوم الانثروبولوجيا ومقارنة الاديان وكثير من الدراسات التي طورت حديثا ، وجدنا ارهاصات وكشوف لافتة سبق اليها البيروني الذي لم يحفل بنصيب ابن سينا من الشهرة خلال القرون الوسطى

دعني اقول ان البيروني في تقديري فاز على ابن سينا في هذا الشوط الثاني ، ولا نعلم ماذا يخبأ االمستقبل ، ربما يعاد مجد ابن سينا القديم وربما تزداد حظوة البيروني وربما يخبو بريق الاثنين مع الزمن

كان ابن سينا مهتما بالفلسفة ثم الطب ومواضيع اخرى متعددة ، بينما البيروني مجاله هو الرياضيات والفلك والانثروبولوجيا وغيرها ، لم يكن البيروني فيلسوفا
مثل ابن سينا ولكنه كان عالما تجريبيا يريد ان يجد الحقيقة في التفاصيل ليستطيع ان ينتقل بعد ذلك لرسم تعميم ،/ بينما ابن سينا بالعكس ينطلق من مبنى فلسفي استقاه من ارسطو لتطبيقه على كل التخصصات ومنها الطب

A great testimonial to moslem phylosophers and scientists

A contrast of two personalities both worthy of study but one on whom the fortune of renoun smiled and anoth.er who lived in obscurity until recently. I enjoyed reading this book and recommended it to people who ordered it on the spot. I am sure many more will enjoy reading the book.

The works and researches of 10th-11th c. Muslim thinkers/scientists/sages Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Biruni, set, fascinatingly, against the tumultuous times in which they lived. An excellent overview of their thought and contributions to the fields of medicine, mathematics, geodesy and other areas. The author knows his stuff - well-written, easily understandable and interesting throughout.

I'm glad I read this book. It wasn't always easy reading for me, mostly because reading about spiritual philosophy is so incredibly boring (Ibn Sina!), but it is an important period of world history: central Asia in the 10th and 11th century when it was newly Islamicized and it was mostly interesting to learn about this time.

I knew very little about Ibn Sina and nothing of Biruni. Biruni is clearly the hero of the book: a truly original thinker whose work was very "modern" and ahead of his time, a man who questioned astrology and witchcraft and based his writings on his own observations and his own research, on math and science and on verifiable facts. All the more tragic that he was basically forgotten until the middle of the 19th century when a European (French?) rediscovered him. Ibn Sina (Avecina), on the other hand, was translated and saw his work spread through out western Asia and Europe where he was very influential during the middle ages. Ibn Sina doesn't come across as particularly modest or nice (in contrast to the modest and kind Biruni) and, on closer inspection, Starr implies that his work wasn't really that original; but his ability to offer a unified theory of everything (God, the universe, the natural world, the soul) apparently had a lot of appeal in earlier times. His ideas are incomprehensible and stupid to most 21st century readers (me).

The real tragedy here is that these thinkers really enjoyed no support from the people around them and the world that enabled their enquiries and writing disappeared, ushering in a period of conservatism and stasis. I think Starr has written more about this in another book so I'll have to read it some day.

Ibn Sina and Al-Biruni were among the brightest intellectuals of their era. This book delves deeply into their methods of inquiry, their groundbreaking contributions to fields such as medicine, philosophy, mathematics, logic, natural sciences, and astronomy, as well as their resilience in the face of hostility and persecution.

This book is an offshoot of a previous book by the same author; The Lost Enlightenment. Both are well-writen and well-researched. I recommend the two to anyone interested in the intellectual history of Central Asia.

Absorbing dual biography in the grand manner - fascinating about them and moreso about the ideas. In Ibn Sina (Avicenna) v Biruni I'm definitely for the latter - thrillingly modern.

Molto interessante per scoprire il ruolo fondamentale che terre (e intellettuali) centroasiatici hanno avuto nel conservare e perpetuare la memoria e i documenti della cultura classica. Altrettanto sorprendente il contributo dato al pensiero matematico, geografico e astronomico in particolare con secoli in anticipo rispetto alla "ri-scoperta" inconsapevole, fattane da personaggi del calibro di Keplero, Brahe e lo stesso Newton. Quasi un romanzo sulle vicende di vita di due dei più grandi pensatori dell'umanità, nonché apici della figura dell'intellettuale totale.
