This was such a joy to get to read, both because of the months worth of excited conversations with Daniel at work (yes I will keep namedropping) and because the story itself was divine. I spend a lot of time in the YA genre and this took me back to the whimsy angst of the John Green glory days, with original ideas, character profiles and sense of humour. Theodore chronicles his life through diary entries, going back to formative and traumatising experiences in his younger years, all of which culminates to open his mind to the people he meets later (also triggered by a professor telling him he needs to live a little) all despite living with a very unusual and distressing condition that for a long time prevented him from connecting to anyone.

this book deals with some heavy topics and the characters go *through* it but everything was handled so well. I could have kept reading and reading, which was such a nice feeling because the entire year I haven't been able to focus on any book properly.

Theo cracked me up by being such a man about things sometimes but I loved spending the summer with him and Lil and watching him grow and see how many people love him and that are out there for him to love 💛

I ripped through this book - reading slump cured! Told through the sincere and humorous voice of Theodore Brown, it tackles very real struggles and emotion in a way that feels truthful but optimistic. It's unafraid to talk about the lows but equally shows the joys, communicating valuable messages in a non-preachy way. The awkward charm and heartwarming feel of the book reminds me of the likes of The Perks of Being a Wallflower or Heartstopper. The unique thing about Theodore's story is that he can see the number of remaining days he has with someone in their eyes - this twist on contemporary YA has you turning the pages non-stop until the end.
I also loved how each chapter was named after a song (plus all the music references throughout the story) I discovered some great new music!
What a cool debut from Daniel Devenny. I reckon young adults will find a lot to relate to in this book.

Counting Down with Theodore Brown by Daniel Devenney is a coming-of-age love story with a massive twist. When Theodore Brown looks into a person's eyes, he sees a literal number that tells him the exact amount of days he will spend with them. Because of this countdown, he has kept everyone at a very safe distance ever since his dad died. But now that he's in college, he decides to actually try living his life and making connections—which is exactly when the fearless and creative girl crashes into his world. The massive catch is that her countdown shows she is only around for a short time, forcing Theo to decide if the pleasure of knowing her is worth the inevitable pain of losing her.

I gave this one a full 5 stars. If you look up the definition of bittersweet, it would just be a picture of this book. I was honestly fighting for my life not to cry at the end! It was so incredibly good. It is not very often that I finish a book and am just left sitting there staring at the wall thinking, "What am I to do now?"

These characters were so cool, and I genuinely just want more of them. I was holding out for so long with that countdown, constantly thinking, "Surely she doesn't actually go, surely something changes!" I dont want to spoil so youll have to read and find out what happens.

Plus, I have to say, my absolute favorite parts were definitely the few nightmare scenes scattered throughout—they were so exceptionally well done!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this debut, but it was addictive. An easy to follow novel centred around teenage Theodore Brown. This encapsulates so many coming of age themes in such a smooth, manageable way and is perfectly relevant to YA audiences. I'm really hoping there's more books to come.

Yes, I did finish this in one sitting, and no, I’ve never done that before. So I think that says a lot about this book. I was very lucky to win an advanced copy from Allen & Unwin, and it turned out to be the perfect read while I was off work recovering from surgery.

Counting Down with Theodore Brown is such a unique and refreshing story. The concept of being able to see how many days you have left with someone just by looking into their eyes is incredibly intriguing and really pulls you in. The novel follows the trials and tribulations of teenage life, making it a powerful coming-of-age story.

It explores a range of meaningful themes, including mental health, identity, friendship, sexuality, love, loss, and music, all woven together in a way that feels authentic and relatable.

I also really appreciated reading from a male perspective. It’s not something I gravitate toward often, as I tend to read books by female authors with female main characters, so this felt like a refreshing change. Experiencing the story through the eyes of a teenage boy added a different depth that I really enjoyed.

🪐Exceptional debut novel full of nostalgia for the best parts of childhood, friendships that stay with you forever and all the firsts along the way.

This book should make it onto the mandatory reading list of every teen and young adult.

A beautiful story! I loved the characters and the portrayal of the main character's internal struggle in particular was very raw, authentic and believable.

The story was well paced and beautifully written, with a very interesting and unique premise. Heavy topics like loss, grief, anxiety and depression were explored in a gripping and realistic way, with lots of laughs between the tear jerking moments.

The more fantastical elements of the story just added an extra layer of intrigue and charm, keeping me guessing right 'til the end. I read this in one sitting and can't recommend it enough!

I would have devoured this book as a teenager…. And I still devoured it as a 37 yr old. The unique premise reels you in, but it’s the characters and the poignant core message that keeps you there. I loved the fluid way the author approached sexuality in the novel, and the sensitive handling of darker subject matter. It could have easily fallen into tropes and cliche but evaded them at every turn. The love and friendship between Theo and Lil was so gorgeously believable, but the message about hope and time is the one that will stick with me forever. To the author… Dolly would have loved this. x

This was a bit of a random choice of book for me, but the premise intrigued me. It's a YA coming-of-age story, but when the main character looks into a person's eyes he sees the exact number of days he'll spend with them.

I liked the way the author used this concept to delve into the main characters anxiety which stemmed from trauma in his past, and how he choses to face some of these fears throughout the book. I enjoyed the overall story but there was something about the writing style that didn't quite work for me and a few other things that mean I didn't love it as much as I could have. I think the writing style felt like it was pitched too young, given that the characters were in college and some of the content is definitely on the higher end of YA.

Liked the start and the near end of this book! Theodore has some relateable moments but man he’s a fukn pussy like bro just go get the things you want in this life tell Lil how you really feel and why you always just giving up man hes frustrating as hell 🤣

I get how hes being depicted and I like some of the topics discussed - Lil’s character is awesome and think there was some great moments with the two of them… so much potential in this book would love to read more from this author!

I really love this book. It’s beautifly written and a very original story full of passion, love, magic and adventure. It brought me nostalgia through the music. I just couldnt stop reading it. The characters made me feel many deep emotions. For me it’s more than a young adult book, it’s a masterpiece that any age can enjoy. A clever and honest story from the lovely Daniel Devenney.

Brilliant start. Great cover. Excellent idea for a novel. Thoroughly engaging and I really thought I'd found the greatest YA read of the year. A slow middle section lets it down. I got a bit lost with the characters and I kept wondering if I'd missed a bit. Fantastic in lots of ways and rescued by a great last third, but I just wanted the rollicking beginning to carry on throughout the novel.
