Writing Short Scripts
This is an updated edition of the first book to help the beginning writer enter the burgeoning world of short films from travelogues to animated shorts. William H. Phillips has extensively revised and updated to include three new and recent original short screenplays and detailed descriptions and photographs of two award-winning short films. Focusing on visualization, dialogue, settings, characters, structure, and themes, Phillips provides a guide to writing scripts for films of less than thirty minutes, from gathering and organizing materials to writing, rewriting, and formatting. Each new chapter includes new and revised ideas and examples. The glossary, bibliography, descriptions of short films, and the list of distributors of short films and videotapes have also been extensively rewritten and updated. Included are citations for short films and web site addresses useful to the short script writer.

Oh the last chapter is great! A list of useful questions that you should probably keep in mind if you wanna make a short scrip into movie... the whole book triggers the mind and your script as well... I'm gonna read it again!

2.5 stars actually.
Looking for some basic structure on the short story? This is probably not the book you want.
It does however try and persuade you not to write. Which is really very sad. One should not dissuade people to have creative outlets, which is my reason for the two stars.
On the upside: If you are in a writing group (and ignore the negative bits) there are some excellent exercises, and guideline on what to do and what not to do when in a group to be helpful to each other.
The best and most helpful bits: There is a great short glossary of terms and definitions used when writing mainly short stories and more; and a story check list that looks to be helpful.
I suggest borrowing a copy to make notes, copy the glossary, and checklist then return it. That's what I did.

کتاب جامع و کاملی نیست ولی مجموعا خوب است به خصوص برای کسی که آشنایی ابتدایی با ادبیات موضوع و روایت داشته باشد.
کتاب مسائل کلی واساسی را اشاره میکند و سر نخ ها و سوال ها و راه های خوبی به خصوص در مرحله پیش و پس از نوشتن فیلمنامه و باز نویسی دارد کتاب نوعی هند بوک میتواند باشد ولی کارگاهی نیست.
ویژگی مثبت دیگر کتاب سه فیلم نامه کوتاهی هست که آورده و نقد و بررسی خوبی از آنها انجام داده و با استناد به آن مطالبش را بیان میکند.

یک هند بوک آموزشی درست درمون در مورد نحوه نگارش فیلمنامه کوتاه. کتاب در مورد 8 مرحله نگارش فیلم کوتاه صحبت میکند، از عناصر تشکیل دهنده فیلم تا فرآیند نگارش، از نگارش اولیه تا بازنویسی های مکرر. ویژگی های ذاتی فیلم کوتاه را میشمارد و پیشنهاد های خوبی برای نویسندگان تازه کار و جوان دارد. همچنین سه فیلمنامه کامل و چندین تکه از فیلمنامه های کوتاه در کتاب به عنوان مثال آمده است. نقطه ضعف کتاب، کمی ترجمه ضعیف و کمی تکرار توضیحات است.

Good book for starting out writing short scripts. Useful checklists as you develop your story and how to approach your re-writes. Good info on have your work read and evaluated by others, setting up readings, best practices and formats for receiving useful evaluations for re-writes and story strength.

I found this to be a comprehensive guide; one I think I'll need to add to my library. It includes 4 stories which are used as examples. Especially interesting to me was the section on sharing your work in a group, getting and giving feedback and revising your draft since I have been part of a group for the last three months and was able to use the pointers.

بسيار روان و موجز. اصول اساسي فيلمنامه كوتاه را بيان مي كند كه در بعضي مواقع قابليت ارجاع به فيلمنامه بلند را نيز داراست. مطالعه اين كتاب هم جرقه اي است براي نوشتن فيلمنامه و هم تحليل آثار كوتاه سينمايي.

کتابای زیادی درباره فیلمنامه کوتاه وجود نداره. پس علاقه مند بودید بخونید. تو کتاب چند نمونه فیلمنامه اورده شده. نکات مفید داخل کتاب پیدا میشه. اما جوری نیست که نیاز هاتون رو پوشش بده. بخشی از کتاب اضافی و بی محتواست و اختلافاتی هم با نظر نویسندگان دیگر کتاب های فیلمنامه نویسی داره که این موضوع بازم نشون میده شما نباید یه کتاب و یه خط فکری خاص رو دنبال کنید فقط نکته برداری کنید.
مراقب هم باشیم کنار هم بمونیم و هم رو تنها نزاریم.
