The firefighter who saves August from a kitchen grease fire happens to be hot, single…and his ex-girlfriend’s brother.

August
When Serena dumps me, I barely have time to process before a sexy firefighter busts into my kitchen. Mostly because of the grease fire, but damn, he snags my attention at once. Then I find out he’s Serena’s brother. And the hits keep coming, because my parents drop the news that they’re moving down South. I’m about to be utterly alone, and I’m tempted to move too.

Drake
I’m in a rut. Work is fine, but I’m just floating through it. Meanwhile, my siblings are out there changing the world. So when the fire chief asks me to come up with a new idea for our charity event, I jump in feet-first with a charity concert. Of course, the one person who can help me is the gorgeous tattoo artist my sister used to date.

Turns out, we get along too well. So well that I can’t stop thinking about him naked. So well that I want to spend every spare second with him.

Except he’s not looking to stay, and I can’t hurt my sister by crossing that line.

‼️SPOILERS‼️

I was so excited for this series because anytime Katherine writes, you just can’t help but love their books. I’ve been addicted to their writing since I discovered them years ago and now, I’m just addicted.

I love August because all he wants is to be loved but when his girlfriend of six months dumps him, he’s hurt. When she has her brother, Drake, deliver items he left behind like his special air fryer, there are sparks. Literally. He has a fire at his house and that whole scene had me in giggles.

Things get more interesting when Serena gives her ticket to the concert she was supposed to go to with August, to her brother, Drake, and these two are perfect.

I have to say my favorite kiss was when Drake shows up with his team and kisses August away from everyone.

The way that they love one another was beautiful. Poor August was a nervous wreck with the meet with Serena. Too freaking cute.

Also, I absolutely loved how Drake’s family was so supportive in his dreams, especially towards the end of the book.

I love both of their families. No drama. I love how Drake’s sister had a part of their getting together. I also loved how August’s parents got tattoos by their son. That was so cute and their tattoos were symbolic too.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

This was the low angst, fun read that I needed right now. I've loved the Hot Under the Collarverse so far and this did not disappoint! We've already met August and the Alchemy Ink crew and I'm happy that now we'll get their stories as well.
I love how Drake and August are kind of opposite but also kind of similar. They just go together so well! I really loved the fact that they enjoyed the same music and things between them just felt so natural. I loved August's neediness and seeing Drake also enjoy it was great! August finally found someone to be as all in as he was and Drake found someone who looked past his work schedule and was happy to be there when time allowed, and was also ready for any adventure he wanted to go on at any time of day. They both finally met someone who was willing to stay, to look deeper and love them the way they needed.

I really enjoyed August and Drake's story and I'm very excited to see this crew find their happily ever after.

Ahhhh I loved August, he was absolutely hilarious. While he seems down on his luck after being dumped and then his parents moving away he finds himself lonelier than usual. He finds companionship in the most unlikely person, his ex-girlfriend's brother.

Drake was so understanding and patient. They both feel a bit guilty due to their circumstances with Serena but I love how they took their time and got to know each other.

The side characters, chefs kiss, muah, absolutely phenomenal. The support they both had, incredible.

I am honored to have received this book as an ARC from the GRR team, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and views are my own. Let’s get into it.

• I struggle with lust filled stories being marketed as a romance. I did not really believe nor feel the romance between both MC’s. They went on and on about some “amazing connection” and how “deep they felt connected” and how they “were falling in love” but that was NO where on page. I have a problem, if as a reader, I can’t feel or see that romance on page. It was very lusty, full of pretty good spice scenes 🤌🏽, but there was no real romance.

• the found/forged family aspect is always my favorite and I love that both MC’s had the support. I think August’s codependency in general…. Is weird. In a relationship, in a friendship, and most definitely with his parents. At times he read like a teenager rather than a grown adult. I understand both men had insecurities that they needed to work through, but it kind of felt like “loving August or loving Drake” fixed me and my insecurities and I don’t really vibe with thoughts like that.

Overall, it was an okay book. There were lots of side characters that made it enjoyable and when the spicy scenes came around, they never disappointed. I wish the author the best of luck on their upcoming release.

💭 My Thoughts:
📖 I've been excited for this series from the very beginning, and it completely delivered. This book felt like pure comfort... a sweet, heartwarming romance filled with banter, flirting, laughter, emotional moments, and plenty of spice.
🧲 August and Drake can't resist the pull between them!! It's beautiful to see them let each other into their hearts and realize they're exactly what the other needs.
🫠 They are honestly the sweetest. August loves with his whole heart and isn't afraid to show it, and watching Drake take care of August in all the ways he deserves was incredibly touching.
🎶 I loved their shared passion for punk music. Their concert dates made their connection feel natural, intimate, and so much fun to watch develop.
🤗 The side characters are absolute gems and add so much warmth to the story. The found family vibes are fantastic, and as always, Kat delivers them perfectly.
💖 Sweet, comforting, funny, and wonderfully romantic... I couldn't put it down.

▪︎FAV QUOTES▪︎
■ “Weird is my specialty.” (August)

■ “Did you ever eat sand as a kid?” I asked, staring at it.
Drake burst out laughing, the sound echoing through the quiet between us. “Like on purpose? Fuck no. What the fuck sort of question is that?”
I lifted a handful of it up and watched the grains fall through my fingers. “The texture felt so good I thought it would be equally good in my mouth.”
Drake flung himself back on the ground, full-out cackling.
...
“Oh god,” he gasped. “I haven’t laughed that hard in ages.”
I mimicked a seated curtsy. “Happy to be of service.”
“You’re fascinating, you know that?” he said, giving me the side eye. (August)

It’s moments like this that make me say: Never change, August, never change! 😂🤣💋

■ “You’re trouble, August,” he murmured, his voice hoarse and raspy.
“Is that a bad thing?” I asked, my breath coming in a little faster.
...
His gaze zeroed in on my mouth, and my breath hitched.
...I licked my lips, which had grown dry with anticipation.
Drake’s eyes widened, and that was it.
With the suddenness of thunder, we were colliding, our lips crashing together.
...
His mouth on mine transmuted my soul, like the first dip of a wet paintbrush into my watercolor palette. And his brushstrokes were masterful as he kissed me with a fervor that left me breathless and panting. The colors exploded between us, vibrant and evocative as I met him kiss for kiss. (August)❤️‍🔥

■ “Uh, apparently I didn’t know her that well,” he scratched at his nape.
“Well, I’m glad for that, baby,” I said, slipping my arm around his shoulders. “There’s only one Castillo I want you falling for.”
“Your other sister?” he teased.
I pinched him in the side, and he yelped. “Ass.” (Drake)🤣

😂 August is impossible not to love... such a rascal!!!

👍I'm definitely going to read this again
😉 Thanks for reading, hope this helps you out!

Open Liner by Katherine McIntyre is the first book in her Alchemy Ink series. It is the story a tattoo artist who had some oddities, never seemed to be enough, and couldn’t keep a relationship going and a firefighter who felt he didn’t live up to his expectations from his family, was in a routine but craved something of his own and wanted something real, and how they found what they needed in each other. August Jones was a tattoo artist at Alchemy Ink in Kennet Square. He loved his job, especially when it involved watercolor tattoos, and his fellow workers Rory, who was also his roommate, Nyx, Caspian, and Owen the owner were like family to him. This was a good thing because he was an only child and very close to his parents and when they told him there were selling his childhood home and moving to Florida he was devastated. They invited him to go with them and were constantly looking for housing and other tattoo studios where he could work but he wasn’t sure he could find anywhere with people who understood him like they did at Alchemy. He had also just been dumped by his girlfriend, Serena, so he was pretty down. Drake Castillo was a firefighter with the Kennett Fire Company and liked his job but he knew he was missing something in his life. He had tried dating but it never seemed to work out, especially with his schedule of working 24 hour shifts. He was the youngest of 3 children and his sisters were a doctor and a lawyer and he often felt like he had to prove himself because they were very smart and had high profile jobs and he was just a fireman. When his sister, Serena, asks him to take her ex-boyfriend’s stuff to his house he does and smells smoke. That is when he meets August who had a grease fire that he easily put out. August was thankful and asked to take him out for a burger to repay him so they went to the Red Square Diner and started getting to know each other. When they touched there was a jolt of electricity and an attraction between them but both knew they couldn’t be together because Drake was August’s ex-girlfriend’s brother. Drake’s fire captain asked him to take over the fundraiser for the fire department and he feels like this new project could help him make his mark. He would like to get an indie band as something different from the spaghetti dinners they usually had and when his sister tells him about having a ticket to see punk band Dropkick Murphys he jumps at the chance, and has to meet a guy to pick it up at the concert and it turns out to be August. They enjoy the show together and end up kissing which makes their attraction even stronger. Several days go by until they see each other again and Drake tells him about his ideas for the fundraiser and that a local band, Spring Fires, is playing and he asks August to go with him to see them. They have a great time, topped off by August saying he knows the lead singer, and end up back at Drake’s and have a hot love scene. But in the back of both of their minds is that they should be together because August is his sister’s ex and they worry about what she will say, and also August is still making up his mind about moving to Florida. They continue to see each other, and kiss in front of others when there is a false fire alarm at the shop and they are growing closer. Then Rory helps August make up his mind about Florida, August was able to get Spring Fires to sign on for the fundraiser, and they have to tell Serena they want to be together. They have both figured out they love each other and it comes to a head when a big fire at an apartment complex where Drake is in danger makes them say it to each other and everything they want is right in front of them. They both see each other for who they are and wouldn’t want to change anything. Their families, including Serena, are happy for them and the fundraiser is a success and they realize they can do anything as long as they are together. I enjoyed this book. August was so sweet but also odd at times when he said whatever came to his mind and also with his texting, but Drake just found him fascinating. Drake was also at a crossroads, not really unhappy with his life but wanting more, especially with proving himself to his family and also with wanting a lasting relationship. They had to overcome having Serena as August’s ex in order to see each other because she was always in the back of their minds. There were several scenes involving fires and also the concerts were fun as they got to know each other better and their attraction grew. Their families, August’s coworkers at Alchemy Ink, and the firefighters all played a big part in the story, especially when helping them decide what to do. I recommend this book, especially if you like stories about men with decisions to make, fire firefighters and tattoo artists, an attraction that only grows, even though they think they shouldn’t be seeing each other, and finally falling in love and finding everything they needed in each other.

Open Liner is book #1 in the Alchemy Ink series but if you read the novella Ink Caps you’ll already be familiar with the themed tattoo shop. Also you’ll get to see characters from the Hot Under the Collarverse and Brannon Boys series. However, Open Liner is definitely a standalone and great start to the Alchemy Ink series.

Katherine McIntyre does low angst found family really well and their books are an automatic comfort read for me. I easily read this in a couple of sittings and didn’t want to put it down. There was funny banter, sweet and sexy characters, and punk music! The characters shared love of punk music was refreshing and inspiring as I also love punk. It’s been ages since I’ve been to a show and it was nice to see queer punks who didn’t need to hide their queer identity. There was also an “ex-girlfriend’s brother” trope that was done in a sweet and fun way.

August is a golden retriever type tattoo artist that seems to fall fast and go all in with the people he dates. The book starts with him getting dumped by his girlfriend Serena. He’s really laid back and takes it in stride but he can’t help but be lonely and wonder why he can’t find someone that appreciates his clingy nature. Serena couldn’t even be bothered to return the stuff he left at her place herself and sends her hot firefighter brother to drop it off.

Drake never even got to meet the guy her sister had been dating and now he’s dropping off the guy’s stuff for her. They have a bit of a meet cute when Drake smells smoke and barges into August’s place. It turned out to be a kitchen fire that Drake easily put out. But then they start to fan the flames of attraction for each other.

At first both feel a bit guilty for acting on their attraction since they have Serena in common. But they can’t deny how right they feel for each other so they will eventually have to deal with it. I love how Katherine McIntyre always has well developed main and side characters. The love is generally sweet and low angst with plenty of spice. The settings are also fun with found family and close friends. This was a great start to the series and I can’t wait to read Caspian’s story next. Thank you for the ARC.

"Open Liner" is the first book in the new Katherine McIntyre series Alchemy Ink. It's both a standalone and a continuation of her Hot Under the Collarverse and Brannon Boys series(s). You don't have to read either, but there may be some familiar characters cameoing in. This is a sweet book about an untethered tattoo artist and an insecure firefighter.
Tattoo artist, August Jones, got dumped by his girlfriend and his parents are moving to Florida. He has a wonderful relationship with his birth family, the Jones' only child. They're researching tattoo shops in Florida. But he's found his niche amongst the artists of Alchemy Ink. They're his found family.
While I found August adorable, I had a bit of a problem with firefighter, Drake Castillo. In his mind, he doesn't measure up to his doctor and lawyer siblings. His life, his job, his home are all "perfectly acceptable" but something is missing. Whine much?
They have a meet cute. Drake, doing a favor for his sister, dropping off a box of her exes stuff, smells smoke. There's a grease fire in August's kitchen which he squelches before it gets out of hand. The pair are strongly attracted. But August is Serena Castillo's ex.
Angst alert ahead. "I fell for my BF, brother's ex/father/child" is a trope which usually includes a lot of scenery gnawing and secret meet-ups. And guilt. Not my favorite. Ms McIntyre does a fair job of treading lightly over this heavy ground. Just drop the "Alas poor Yorick" angst and communicate already.
Meeting up at a punk concert (I didn't even know that was still a thing) and collaborating on the Fire Department's yearly fundraiser ( a punk concert fundraiser? ), they're relationship blossoms. Will they come clean to Serena? Will August stay in Pennsylvania? Get a HEA? Have to read to find out.
It was a quick read. There were certainly parts I enjoyed. However, if this was my first time reading Katherine McIntyre, I'm not so sure I'd go back to read the rest of the series. Hoping this was just a fluke. I've enjoyed quite a few books from this author's catalog.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.

Here's "Open Liner" by Katherine McIntyre. Its the first books in her Alchemy Ink series, which is in the same universe as the Brannon Boys series and the Hot Under the Collar series

My fuck these two were cute. All of the chemistry and the similar interests and the meet-cute. It was all a little awkward but their connection pushed through. It was also healing, both of them finding the perfect partner for them, that person seeing them, zero judgement.

Not to mention the generally low angst. I’ve been reading a lot of angst lately, and I didn’t know I needed a break until now.

CanNOT wait for the next one!!

Oh I needed this! Low angst, sweet and spicy is exactly what I needed after so much heavy reading.

August was an absolute sunshine! He really made the world around him better with just his personality and sweet nature. Yet he couldn’t find someone to love him for him. Everyone always left him or wasn’t as into the relationship the same way he was.

Drake always felt like he was second best in a family of “successful” people. He never felt like being a firefighter was on the same level of success as his siblings, which made him feel inadequate.

He yearned for someone who would understand the odd hours he’d have to keep as a firefighter. Someone to come home to after a long, exhausting day and someone to call his own.

August always felt like he was too much for people to handle. He was too needy, too random. He wanted to find someone who would meet all of his quirky flaws and match them with their own.

He never expected that someone to be his ex’s brother. Drake saving him from a fire was not on his bingo cards and neither was the immediate connection between them. The attraction was instant and the fact they both wanted more than hookups, was like a match made in heaven.

But even knowing that their relationship might not work given who they were, their feelings for each other just kept growing. Neither had ever found in another person what they had found in one another.

I loved that they decided to give their relationship a shot despite being afraid of the fallout if August’s ex discovered them. It was more than obvious that they were meant for each other.

I’m really excited about this new series! Katherine just knows how to write a feel good story that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside🥰

Open Liner is the 1st book in Katherine McIntyre's Alchemy Ink series. If you have read their Hot Under the Collar or Brannon Boys series you will see some familiar faces.

I am so excited to be back in this world with Katherine McIntyre. These characters and this world are such a comfort to me.

Here we meet August and Drake. August is a tattoo artist and a complete ray of sunshine. He is lonely and looking for his person. Drake is a firefighter who is also lonely, but might not realize it before meeting August.

When Drake arrives at August's house with some of his belongings, he rushes in due to a kitchen fire. Drake's sister happens to be August's ex. These 2 connect with each other almost immediately. They meet up again for a concert and learn they have the same taste of music.

They continue to grow closer as they meet up for shows. Then they start to go on dates and spend more and more time together. Their feelings smash into them when there is a fire incident.

August wears his heart on his sleeve. He feels so deeply but I don’t think anyone has taken care of him as he should be until Drake. Drake honors him.

It’s clear that August’s parents love him but the guilt and pressure they put on him is too much. And it seems like they have no idea they are doing and how it’s affecting August.

August is a ray of sunshine. So is Drake, but not so out loud.

I was gifted my copy of this book.

This book is the start of a new series, spawned from The Brannon Boys, which was itself spawned from the Hot Under The Collar series, and Ms McIntyre is now calling this the Hot Under The Collarverse and I love that!

I loved this book too!

What I'm loving most about these books, all of them, from both preious series, is how very low angst they are between the main characters, and the families! Both blood and found, the families of these men are amazing, Drake's sister, Serena, especially.

It's steamy and smexy, these two hit it off, right from the start, and the attraction burns hot the whole way through. It's emotional: both Drake and August carry some baggage, and there is also Serena to deal with, which turns out to be not needed to be dealt with at all!

It's fun! The group of people in Alchemy Ink are a lot of fun, as friends, and as the support August needs when his parents drop their bombshell. But the guys tease and joke, as well as support.

Rory and Wyatt (Direct Nailing, Brannon Boys #3) take part, as Rory works at Alchemy, and there are hints to their story, but you don't need to read it for this to make sense. It's recapped enough.

These books are easy reads, and I mean that in the best way, and if you need a light and fluffy, but steamy read, these book are for you. The Brannon Boys and the Hot Under The Collar books, all of them!

4.25 stars Sit back and enjoy this cozy romance.

August is a tattoo artist, he works at Alchemy Ink. He just got dumped.
Drake is a firefighter and the brother of the last one who dumped August. Drake brought August his stuff from his sister’s house. When Drake entered the house he smelled fire.
Helping August with a kitchen fire was meant to be.

Both are feeling lonely. August has had more than one relationship with people who belonged in the friend zone, and Drake always feels second-rate and can’t keep anyone because of his extreme work hours, so only hook-ups.

They clicked right away, and in no time August was on his knees for Drake, the chemistry between them was undeniable.

Now August also got ‘dumped’ by his parents, they will move away, and asked him if he wanted to move with them. That became a dilemma, since Drake was in the picture. August still wants to think about his options.

They have dates, holding hands, fuck each other’s brain out and just fit so well together.
They are both in splits; Drake being with his sister’s ex, impossible to explain, it’s a ‘not-done’. August who doesn’t want to go to Florida, he loves Drake, but with his history with relationships, he knows he’ll get dumped sooner or later, so what to do… Florida or not?

The conversations were fun and easygoing. The chemistry is off the charts, they are scorching together, and the ‘dirty talk’ is dang hot hot!
A really feel-good story, well-written, and with lovable characters!

Having read the author’s previous stories, especially the last book in the Brannon Boys series, I was excited to read a continuation of that universe in Alchemy Ink. However, you don’t need to have read those to enjoy this book. I just found it enhanced my understanding of side characters. This was a low angst, high heat story revolving around two men who’ve never had much luck in the relationship department, but are still open to finding that special someone. After August gets dumped by Serena, he’s bi btw, he’s feeling pretty down. Not that their relationship was all that, but he feels from past relationships that’s he’s either too much or never enough. Serena has her brother Drake, a single firefighter in town, drop off August’s things to him after their breakup. Who then ends up saving him from a kitchen fire. When she gives her concert ticket to The Dropkick Murphys to her brother to go in her stead and meetup with August, their instant chemistry is fire. But, the fact that August dated his sister is something that simmers below the surface. They both think it would be weird, but still can’t seem to stay away from each other. All the while avoiding telling her. The joke’s on them though, as they come to find out her plan later on. Both MC’s learn to trust their instincts with each other, as well as their importance in their respective family/found family dynamic. Drake and August fit each other like missing puzzle pieces, and get the HEA they were always searching for. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

This was such a fun, feel-good start to the Alchemy Ink series.

August immediately won me over. He's a sunshiney tattoo artist with a huge heart who keeps getting dumped for being "too much" when really he just loves deeply and wears his heart on his sleeve. After his latest breakup, he finds himself lonelier than ever—only to unexpectedly connect with Drake, his ex-girlfriend's firefighter brother.

I absolutely loved the dynamic between these two. Drake is patient, kind, and incredibly understanding, while August brings warmth, humour, and chaos in the best possible way. Their attraction is instant, but I appreciated that they took their time getting to know each other and working through the awkwardness of having Serena in common.

Katherine McIntyre excels at writing low-angst romances filled with found family, supportive friendships, and characters who genuinely care about each other. The tattoo shop crew were fantastic, the firefighter and tattoo artist pairing was adorable, and the shared love of punk music added another layer of fun to the story.

The banter was great, the romance was sweet and sexy, and the overall vibe felt like a warm hug. If you're looking for a comfort read with lovable characters, found family, and a friends-to-lovers romance that will leave you smiling, this is definitely worth picking up.

What to expect:
🖤 Tattoo Artist x Firefighter
🖤 Sunshine x Sunshine
🖤 Friends to Lovers
🖤 Hurt/Comfort
🖤 Ex-Girlfriend's Brother
🖤 Found Family
🖤 Punk Music Lovers
🖤 Low Angst, High Heart

Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review.
This book has everything it is such a good feel Book that it just left me smiling
We have got August who has just broke up with his girlfriend and he’s feeling a bit down in the dumps not because Serena dumped him, but for a simple fact that he is now alone again. August is bisexual and all he wants is connection with that one person to who gets him. Whilst he is cooking in the kitchen, he is distracted by the man coming flying into his kitchen and putting the fire out that is happening on his stove. And he has no idea who he is.
Then we have Drake who has felt ordinary. His whole life His brother and sister are so well accomplished being a lawyer and a doctor and he doesn’t think that being a firefighter puts him in the same class. But when the chief asks him to come up with a fundraiser, he really starts to put his ideas together. But when his sister asks him to drop off her exes belongings, he wasn’t expecting to come face-to-face with the most gorgeous man.
These two get on like a house on fire there is just a connection there and when they keep bumping into each other, the more they connect, they start making plans to make sure they see each other and then they hook up but what is Drake sister gonna think?? These two are so well seated for one another this book is effortless. It is just such a brilliant read that will leave you with a smile on your face. Drake and August have everything they are soulmates but first they have to speak to Serena.

4.25 stars

Although this is book one in the author’s new Alchemy Ink series, it’s not the first time we’ve visited. August, one of the MCs in this book—and a tattoo artist at Alchemy Ink—was roommates with Alchemy Ink’s piercer, Rory (in Direct Nailing from her Brannon Boys series). While it’s certainly not necessary to read that one first, it was still a really fun read and Rory also plays a fairly large part in this one as well.

August and firefighter, Drake, were so adorable together. Both guys kinda felt out of step with everyone around them and were each looking for someone of their own. The fact that everyone they knew were coupling up certainly wasn’t helping matters but, would they ever be able to get past Drake being August’s ex-girlfriend’s brother?!

I wanted to just wrap both these guys up in the biggest hug! They were both a little insecure in their ability to be loved but they were so dang SWEET! I could’ve read about these two on and on, especially with all the steam they generated as well as Drake’s filthy mouth! My favorite things though were that there was absolutely no angst or drama and no third act breakup. It was all light and easy but not FLUFF if you know what I mean… there was actually a really good storyline that made it a breeze to read. I hope you’ll check it out, I think you may find you’ll enjoy it as much as I did. 4.25 stars (should be 4.5 but I can’t leave a fraction and it’s not QUITE a rounded up 5).

I received a copy of this book for free but am voluntarily leaving a review.

* self-esteem issues (Drake)

Kink - oral fixation/hole filling

I would have liked more about August's watercolour art side. We see him painting on several occasions but he never tells Drake about it and never seems to do anything with his art. The author makes a point that Drake's house is bland and unadorned on more than one occasion, surely this would be perfect to bring August's art into things. Or even at the fundraiser. I could understand if August didn't think his drawn art (as opposed to his tattooing) was any good but this doesn't seem to be the case. It's mentioned quite often but nothing is done with it. He doesn't even paint his parents home as a moving present.

My favourite part: the families of all kinds. August's relationship with the team at Alchemy Ink. This author does found family very well.

My least favourite - August rushing to the site of a fire just because Drake might be in danger. Dude, this will be your life going forward. Let the man do his job.

Did I cry? - Yes, but it was August's Mum that made me cry not either of the MCs or their relationship.

August Jones is just a little bit clueless. He's adorable, actually. A tattoo artist with his heart on his sleeve who radiates pure golden retriever joy. But he's a little quirky, a little clumsy, and he's just been broken up with... again.

Drake Castillo is tired of living in his family's shadow. His perfectly acceptable job fighting fires, his perfectly acceptable, but undecorated house, and his perfectly acceptable, but in his mind, unexceptional life feel just that - acceptable. He's lonely and longs to be a priority in someone's life; to be seen and cherished for who he is.

These two loveable green flags meet when Drake's sister (August's ex) asks him to drop off a box of August's belongings post-breakup. However when Drake tries to make the delivery, he finds August about to burn down his own kitchen with a grease fire. Instant chemistry, but problematic to be sure. I mean, aren't there rules about pursuing a sibling's ex?

I fell in love with both men in this low-angst, cozy romance. If you're looking for something sweet - but not saccharine, charming, and sexy, this quick read by Katherine McIntyre has got you covered. The supportive families, side characters who feel like your new best friends, and picturesque Eastern PA small-town vibes set the stage for what is sure to be an addictive new series.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW!💕🔥🎨

🔥Ex’s brother
🔥Found Family
🔥Verse dynamic
🔥Cock warming

The first book of the Alchemy Ink series relegates the sweet, low angst romantic story of Rory Brannon from Direct Nailing’s roommate- sexy golden retriever tattoo artist- August Jones and his ex girlfriend’s brother- sexy firefighter Drake Castillo!

August is too needy and all in when it comes to relationships and now his latest failed relationship with Serena brings him someone he always wanted in a partner- her brother Drake, but August might be moving with his parents to Florida…

“Being around him was like soaking in the rays of the summer sun.”

“I craved spending time with him in a way I hadn’t around anyone for a long while.”

“Pure trouble.”

I loved how their friendship started by having so much in common and being so at ease with each other with a deep passionate connection and chemistry that was unavoidable- thanks to Serena… indirectly or is it?…

“I’d see if this was a false start or could turn into a steady flame.”

How will they navigate the problems of telling Serena and the possibility of August moving away?…

Will the found family of Alchemy Ink and Rory convince August he is not alone and will always have them in his life and maybe find the happiness he deserves and craves?…

Caspian is next with a Vegas adventure!

1st person, past tense, dual PoV
August Evan Jones (late 20's), tattoo artist with Alchemy Ink
Drake Castillo (late 20's), firefighter with the Kennett Fire Company

This was a light, easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This author has quickly become a go-to for books that I know I will enjoy when I'm stuck not knowing what to read next. I genuinely adored their meet-cute and these characters were such sweethearts they were easy to root for.

I'm an absolute sucker for so many things in this book - firefighters, chill artists, characters who support and understand each other, and characters who think they're too much until they find the person they click perfectly with and are just enough. August and Drake really were perfectly suited to each other, they were compatible in every facet, though it felt a little too easy at times, especially regarding the "dating my sister's ex-" aspect. I kept waiting for some kind of hiccup to cause a little tension, but nothing really materialized.

I liked that they had so much in common and were able to help each other navigate life events external to the relationship, but would have liked a little more relationship navigation since their past relationship issues all but disappeared without discussion, though their sexy times more than made up for it.

I enjoyed seeing glimpses of other characters from the series and am excited to read more.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

August and Drake are so cute! This beginning of series is an absolute riot! August gets dumped by his girlfriend because he is seeking a serious relationship while she’s not. While returning August's things, Drake, August's ex-girlfriend's brother, realises there’s a fire and rescues him. There are some sparks, but August brushes it off until he goes to a concert of his favourite band, and who shows up? Drake! He got his sister’s ticket, because guess what? He also loves the band! That cannot be a coincidence, so while both navigate the awkwardness that is dating your ex-girlfriend’s brother, August and Drake realise they met their forever person!

August is just adorable! He’s such a feelings guy, he’s always in 100% for everything. With him you get cuddles, feelings, BJ’s and almost like a life-size koala. Which is right up Drake’s alley, because he’s been feeling pretty hollow lately. He just wishes he had someone forever. To hold, to cherish. So, as you can imagine, this is just super adorable and low angst! August and Drake navigate their feelings for another with such intensity!

I know this is Pride Month, but I cannot stress enough how we very much NEED stories like this. No drama, just vibes, and two men falling in love with each other! I can’t wait to read the rest of the series because this was just super cute!

MY OPINION: I’ve read a few other books by Katherine McIntyre, and I always feel like these are sweet read by the pool (or by the fire) type of books. Like the others, I have read this is exactly that. Low angst, good men, and a happily ever after.

Each of these men has failed in finding ‘the one’ for them. It’s not a lack of trying, but they seem to only get so far before that partner walks away. August has found everything he wants in his small hometown. And as a bi man, he feels he should be able to find someone who gets him, but it seems like he ends up driving them off because he is too much.

Drake has a family full of professionals, but he just wants someone who wants to be with him, accepts his job, and still goes to him for support and love.

When these two meet, there sparks and heart eyes. They fit, and they can’t seem to forget each other. It seems like destiny when they keep finding themselves together. Now they have to figure out how to tell Drake’s sister that they are dating since she is August's ex-girlfriend.

It is a very sweet book with two great guys. Plenty of open-door spice, lots of heart, and a lovely slice-of-life book. Cameos from previous stories everywhere, but you don’t have to read them to enjoy this one. You feel satisfied when you finish. Put it on your summer reading list.

4.5/5. ”I wanted to suck his dick, but romantically.” I mean, that pretty much sums up the whole vibe. Then there was the double lol moment of ”Middle names are like taints, in between the important shit.” I’ll let you connect the dots yourself because jokes aren’t funny if you have to over-explain them to death.

The whole thing was just too fucking cute. They were the sweetest, most precious dudes, and the satellite characters are always the best. The story was lovely, had all the good steam and heart this author is well-versed in, and it gave comfy-cosy sweater energy throughout. My only gripe is the same one I always have with their books, and that’s repetition. Editors, do better. Y’all must’ve had at least two teachers/professors who drilled it in you, because I didn’t have a single one let it slide. I’m getting real tired of feeling mad on behalf of bank accounts that don’t belong to me. This isn’t the journey I signed up for.

Anyway. I loved it and now I’m going to abuse my aching traps with water that wants to be lava when it grows up. 😗🫶

I have been so excited about this series ever since Kat announced it, one of the main reasons for that is because I love tattoos and I love reading about characters who are tattoo artists. So for Kat to take that idea and turn it into a whole series? I HAD to sign up for it right away!
I'm so glad I did. August is honestly so freaking adorable, he definitely has golden retriever energy, and I adored how quirky he is. He has random facts and loves to text and yearns for a connection with someone who actually gets him. (Same, August.) And he finally found a person who loves all of him and wants him just as much as he wants them.
That special person is Drake, who just so happens to be August's ex's brother. But, August's 'relationship' with Serena was more of a situationship and besides, everything worked out!! Yay for these two adorably sweet men!!

I love Kat's storytelling abilities but I think what I love most is how she creates such dynamic characters while building a found family that just make you feel good to read about. Without fail you can be sure to find found family in Kat's books and that's one of my favorite things. I can't wait to get to 'meet' the rest of the crew at Alchemy Ink and see what else is in store for this family of tattoo artists.
