The aim of the collection was to allow readers experience what life was like in the trenches, and it did so admirably.

I purchased the book at a time when I was researching my grandfather’s service in the Great War. But unlike Laurence my grandfather wrote home very little according to relatives and no correspondence survived. I looked upon this collection somewhat as a surrogate.

Many a treatise has been written about the First World War but it was good to get inside the mind of the average ‘
