Soria has very little means t survive each day and even more meager prosects for her future. In a realm where magic is prized and valued, she was born with no power. Soria and the other recruits can't figure out why the powerful, handsome and untouchable captain purchased her. Can she find a way to outwit and outlast most of the other recruits long enough to earn the chance to escape the nightmare she was forced into?
I was hooked on this book right from the start. The emotional rollercoaster and turmoil doesn't take long to start hitting and I really struggled to put this book down because I had to know what was going to happen next. I loved watching Soria evolve and step into her own inner strength while also finding a way to outwit the recruits and the challenges that are meant to destroy her.
The captain... he's tall, powerful, mysterious and untouchable. He brings that perfect mix of "I can't stand you but I want you" tension to the mix. Throw in some found family in the friends that Soria makes, add a dash of deadly trials and plot twists and the next thing I knew, I was up way too late, hooked on this story compelled to keep turning the page.
The cliffhanger!! And the events right before it!! Heartbreak, hope, heartbreak, hope... such a rollercoaster of an ending. I will definitely be reading the next book because Soria's story definitely has my interest and I HAVE to know how this plays out.

Arena Thieves, a debut romantasy novel, will put your emotions on a never ending roller coaster. I found myself not wanting to put it down because there was a constant need to know what happened next.
Soria, born without a delta but, forced on the auction stage anyways. Then there is Jude, the mysterious man who bid on her for only 10 Krona, despite her not having a delta. There is this instant romantic tension between the two, that neither can act on until the time is right.
Through all of the betrayal and selfishness that she endures, she finds friends quickly to keep her grounded and safe from everyone out to get the “weakest link.” She manages to make it through the hard training, only to stumble onto other dangers that await…

Arena thieves starts off with Soria, a delta-less girl who believes to be running away from fate with the boy she loves only because mistakenly taken by Kings Guard for the yearly auction that determines people with deltas future -whether to be of use to. After a rather embarrassing but surprising auction her fate is sealed in being sold to Aegis, the most ruthless of them all. Through pain, trial, many errors, heartbreak and new friendships she makes it to the Crucibal without a delta to prove her life is worth living. Along the way she slams heads with the Captain of Aegis, Jude Blackwell who is quite the mystery. One minute he’s cold towards her; allowing abuse towards Soria to happen and the next he is helping her, guiding her, and making her feel things she’s never wanted to feel towards him. Soon she realizes her life will be tied in a very permanent way to the very man allowing other recruits to nearly kill her every night for sport.

The second installment of the series is much anticipated and I cannot wait to see where the author takes this series. Just how high is the anticipation and excitement for this new series? Limitless.

Soria is an underdog FMC, born without a delta (power) who is unceremoniously shoved into an auction she shouldn't be in and forced to survive. She is quick to find friends and enemies alike. Flying by the seat of her pants to stay alive through trials and travels as the weakest of the bunch and the only one without power she slowly finds her strength and answers. However she also finds betrayals, pain, uncertainty, and of course Jude.
The energy of this book is fast paced, angsty tormented adventure in a world of magic and status.
We of course have romance.Without giving too much away I will say it gets messy. it's fierce and complicated and.... extremely selfish. The friendships are a much needed anchor in this book to help lift some of the heavier stuff.
One thing I really liked was that there isn't a heroine vs villain base. the "villain" isn't exactly clear throughout and as masks slowly start to fall we can piece the bigger picture together. I think a lot more of those answers will be revealed in the next book.
The criticism I have for this book is the foreshadowing. the breadcrumbs that were left to hint at what was coming were too obvious. almost whole slices of bread, especially in reference to Kole.
Then the ending. again without spoiling too much, I saw it coming but then brushed it off as being possible because it contradicts her ability to enter the battle with the hyrda. If this was true all along she wouldn't have been able to get past the first gates.
All in all this was a great read and kept me entertained. Judes mystery was played out really well and now that a lot of that earlier tension is gone I can't wait to see how the tethered pairs will navigate the next part of the story.

Can I just take a moment to give the LARGEST ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO Madison Zehring. I cannot put into words the absolute chokehold I was in from the first sentence to the last. The world building, the character building, the beautiful vivid picture the author paints for each and every scene. I am absolutely blown away that this is a debut novel, and I am on the edge of my literal seat in preparation for the next book. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Hands down-a PHENOMENAL book to kick off 2026.

One of the most intense cliff hangers I’ve seen in FOREVER, and I’ve read a tonnn of fantasy. This book is absolutely fabulous. I’m really, really impressed!
For a good portion, you are shown a very weak FMC. She grew up terribly poor and survived off of garbage and lived in rags. What she lacks in physical strength, Soria makes up for in mental acuity and tenacity. She is deeply loyal, to a fault sometimes.
All of a sudden, the author pulls a magic trick and you are swept through this incredible story of self-growth, powers being revealed, and unbelievable connections made. The twists and turns are insane, and the book leaves off in a freaking cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. I’m dying for the next, lol, the wait is going to suck 😂
This book is like The Hunger Games, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Fourth Wing had a baby. The games and trials are intense. It’s a freaking journey, and I loved it. The MMC is also kind of perfect. With a name like Jude, how can you go wrong?? It’s a good combo of games and trials, with some romance sprinkled in there to keep you reading to see what happens. I. Loved. It. Phenomenal. Can’t wait for the next!!

This story holds your attention without forcing it. It keeps you present, aware of the details, and invested in what comes next. The characters all have their place and value both human and other 🤭. I’d love to spend more time with them, especially if we get first-person perspectives in chapters in the future.
My only critique: I wanted it to slow down so I could sit in certain moments longer, learn more, and allow further details example like training and character history. At times it felt jumped forward and time moved too fast, which some readers may prefer.
Mild spice 🌶️ but heavy feels with emotional connections that carry real weight allowing one to breathe.
Bonds between people, animals, magic, and Deltas is fluid and thought out. Everything has purpose, making it easy to believe in the world and its people.

WOW doesn’t even begin to cover it. From the very beginning, this book grabbed me by the collar and refused to let go.
I received an ARC and went in with zero expectations—only to be completely blown away. The characters are instantly lovable, the action is sharp and satisfying, and the twists? Let’s just say my jaw spent a lot of time on the floor.

I received a digital book mail copy of this book in exchange for an honest review — and I was hooked from the very first chapter, I could not put the book down!
Arena Thieves isn’t just a story — it’s a full-on experience. The world-building is immersive without ever feeling heavy or overwhelming, with so much of the context revealed naturally through dialogue, action, and character choices rather than long exposition. I found myself completely absorbed in the world from the start.
The MMC has that calm, unreadable, quietly dangerous energy that keeps you on edge every time he’s on the page — powerful, controlled, and impossible to ignore. The FMC is a true survivor: kind-hearted, loyal, shaped by loss, and far stronger than she realises. Watching her grow into her strength, especially toward the end, was incredibly satisfying. Her friendships add so much warmth and grounding to an otherwise brutal setting.
The story gave me strong Divergent meets The Hunger Games vibes, but it still felt fresh and uniquely its own. The pacing is fast, the stakes are high, and the slow-burn tension builds beautifully.
And that ending…

Soria’s journey in this book as a delta-less FMC who was in the wrong place at the wrong time was so captivating from the first page. The Captain’s secret was not at all what I was expecting and I am anxious to explore that more as the series continues.

We’ve got it all! A sickly girl who is the underestimated badass, a broody secretive captain, a pithy ancient sidekick, the adorable best friends, magic, a game for survival, and an edge of your seat ride!
This book was so fun and took me on a wild ride with twist and turns I didn’t see coming. Several times I audibly gasped and concerned my coworkers and family.

Fourth wing x Hunger games x Red Queen!
The vibes in this new romantasy was everything!
Enemies to lovers, deadly games and challenges, rare mythical creatures, an underdog story, slow burn, found family and plot twist ending!
I really enjoyed Arena Thieves and the FMC Soria had my heart from the beginning. It was action-packed with plenty of ups and mostly downs for poor Soria. The fast pace kept me entertained and I really grew to love a lot of the characters and I was just itching for every moment between the FMC and MMC! 😍
The magic system is very elemental based but with a mix of everything else mixed in with creates a surprising and rather deadly inferno of forces. Aeromancy, superstrength, mental manipulation, some kind of long dangerous rope arms?😂
As you can tell there is everything and more and it makes for some very fascinating reading.
What I was missing but also believe we will see more of in the next book is how the rest of the world and most importantly the ones in charge operates. Aswell as the actual Diamond Games, the once a year deadly challenge between the players of Bachaloria and their awful enemy the bloodletters!
I cant wait for the next book! Thank you so much to the author for this ARC! 😍

The fast pace kept me entertained and I really grew to love a lot of the characters and I was just itching for every moment between the FMC and MMC! 😍
The magic system is very elemental based but with a mix of everything else mixed in with creates a surprising and rather deadly inferno of forces. Aeromancy, superstrength, mental manipulation, some kind of long dangerous rope arms?😂
As you can tell there is everything and more and it makes for some very fascinating reading.
What I was missing but also believe we will see more of in the next book is how the rest of the world and most importantly the ones in charge operates. Aswell as the actual Diamond Games, the once a year deadly challenge between the players of Bachaloria and their awful enemy the bloodletters!

Wow, just wow...
This isn't just a book. it's a full-on adventure, fantastic world building, and context drops through diologue and actions rather than narration.
I am going to be ruined reading for the next week because nothing is going to live at the standard of this book while also greiving that there is no second book yet.
Soria, a poor girl from the cattage fields who is practically on her own, who is surviving but not living. She ends up in a situation she should never have been put in by being cast as a runner for the auction, with no delta and no choice but to continue. This strong women fights for her place in this new reality she's been forced into while also keeping her moral compass and sacrifices alot for the sake of others, she works way harder than than those with a delta with the added contribution of her asthma making things more complicated.
This is to the same level writing as forth wing with the world building, structure, intrigue, plot, and characters, and im so excited to see where this ends up in the following book. I was really taken on an adventure and espaped to another world when reading. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read. You should be really proud of the work you put into this.

Madison is a phenomenal writer! I was hooked the entire time. The world she has built was so impressive. I hate that it is over and highly anticipating the next book! I unfortunately had to take a break while reading as I got really sick, and a good friend passed away. But I’m grateful to have had this ARC to escape into! A truly amazing book!

A world where individuals are blessed with a special ability, which is called “delta”, by the time someone is an adolescent [approximately by age 10] most people have one. Though Soria is without a delta. At the age of 21 those with deltas are then sent to an auction where they must show their ability to then be sold and bought by the highest bidder or face the reaper.
Soria unfortunately was waiting for Kole to run away together when she was taken and forced to participate even though she told everyone she did not belong because she had no delta. By some miracle no one bid on Soria and just when she thought she was free she was bought by the Aegis group by a ridiculously low cost.
Now she must rely on herself and her new friends as she navigates the struggles of surviving life as a Aegis recruit. From tethering delta bonds to Sera who wants her dead from the very beginning. There is also Jude. All I gotta say is you’re gonna wanna read this book especially for him! 🥵

Arena Thieves is a great new romantasy filled with action, growth, and twists and turns that kept me entertained and guessing throughout! The main character, Soria, is a young woman born without a delta (special power) into a life of hardship and poverty. Her kingdom, Bachaloria, holds an auction each year for the major powers in their world to place bids on the young men and women with deltas. While some people are chosen for the military or hospital, the greatest honor for someone with a delta is to get picked by Aegis—an institution that recruits and trains people to become Players who will represent their kingdom in the annual Diamond Games against their enemy in the north. While Soria herself is not worried about being forced into the auction, she’s already lost her two older brothers to it and now she fears she’ll lose her boyfriend, Kole, as well. Even though Kole has always aspired to join Aegis, he and Soria concoct a last minute plan to run away together the morning of the auction. Instead, Soria finds his house abandoned, and when she shows up looking for him, she’s instead knocked out and then forced onto the auction stage. Somehow finding herself at Aegis against all odds, she has to navigate abuse from others and the typical deathly challenges that come with being a recruit—all without a delta of her own. Not to mention navigating her feelings for the man that bid on her, the mysterious Captain of all the players at Aegis, Jude Blackwell.
Overall thoughts:
Madison Zehring has done a great job creating this terrifying and immersive world. The fact that the recruits aren’t there of their own free will but are bid on at an auction is such an interesting, dark twist that sets this story apart from most romantasies. At the end of the day, you find yourself considering that even the worst characters are there against their will, fighting for their lives. Soria’s growth throughout the story was nice to see. She starts off really only relying on Kole for any sort of outside help or comfort,

As mentioned above, I loved seeing her growth throughout the story! She really banded together a group of underdogs into an unlikely, winning team. She shows us that individual strength and perseverance is important, enduring abuse at the hands of her bullies and working through her personal despair at being forced into Aegis, but that it’s not the only thing that matters. Having friends to lean on and showing compassion for the situations of others are equally important for Soria. I’m excited to see how she continues to develop in the rest of the series!
Kole:
Kole is the character you love to hate. An overly ambitious kiss-ass who cared more about his chance at a legacy than about the woman he claimed to love. I wondered at first if Kole not being home the morning of the Auction truly was some big mistake—maybe he had gotten captured and brought there against his will, maybe something else had happened to him that prevented him being there for Soria— I’ll be interested to see how his character arc goes in the next book. Will there be a chance at redemption for him, or is he too far gone?
Jude:
Our hot, mysterious captain with the power to quite literally take your breath away. I really enjoyed the use of air manipulation in this story! I feel like it’s an under-utilized power in a lot of romantasy settings, and it was done really well with Jude Blackwell! I can’t wait to find out.

All in all, this was a very fun read that kept me coming back for more because I just needed to know what was going to happen. Soria and Jude and their budding romance is something I really found myself rooting for, and then the twist at the end threw just enough of a wrench in things to leave me excited to find out how they’ll work through it all in the next book! With a loveable cast of side characters, and a few less loveable ones to root against, I found myself entertained from start to finish. Can’t wait to get my hands on book two!

I received this book as an ARC (my first one).
This book had me hooked early on, I couldn’t put it down (now I need to catch up on sleep) and absolutely loved it. I finished it in three days.
I enjoyed the world and the magic system that Maddison created, she has included characters you will love and a few you will definitely hate. There are breadcrumbs throughout the book, some were a little obvious but I was still excited when my guesses were correct. Some breadcrumbs will require a reread now I understand more. This book has left me excited for the release of book 2.
Soria is the female main character who we follow throughout the book. She is born without magic (called a delta) there is a great disparity in the treatment of people with and without deltas.
Though that being said, the people with deltas are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Treated like property and if not purchased they can be killed by the King's reaper (another form of delta). If purchased they are transported to work for the army, mines or other organisations that have use for their deltas.
The country of Bachalorian is at war with Enemy In The North, Bloodletters also called Seyka. To prevent an all out war they instead have a treaty that requires people with deltas (known as players) to compete in an annual hunger games type competition called the Diamond Games.
To be selected for the Diamond Games, people with deltas first have to be purchased by Aegis at the auction. Once purchased they begin training in a Fourth Wing style war college where you either succeed or die. If you succeed, you become a player (which is viewed as the highest honour) who then compete in the Diamond Games.
Within the magic system there is also bonding/tethering which can be done with certain animals like a wolf (Fenrir) or with one other person who also possess a delta. To enter the Diamond Games the players need to be tethered to another person.
We follow Soria as she unexpectedly ends up on the auction stage without a delta, her only choice is to play her Violin in the hopes it is enough to avoid death. She is purchased by the Captain of the Aegis Players, Jude.
Jude is a wind wielder who is the tall, dark, handsome and deadly character that we all love to lust over. Soria is in love with Kole a water wielder who she grew up with in her hometown.
Transported to the training grounds she has to somehow survive the resentment from other recruits for not having a delta, trying to keep up in training without powers and the attention of the terrifying and attractive Captain Jude.
Her last hope is that Kole her first love will help protect her throughout the training or help her escape. Soria will discover who she can and can’t trust and the pain that comes with personal growth.

I found this to be an excellent read and would give it more than 5 stars if I could. I thought the author did a great job with the characters and the story itself. This gave me Hunger Game vibes but with a lot more excitement to it. Once I started it I didn’t want to put it down. After I finished I read it again. The characters were very interesting and for the most part there was always something going on to keep the pages turning. Some of the characters you will love and some you will love to hate.

When Kole springs a plan on Soria at the last minute to run away together the morning of the auction, Soria’s heart sings. She is over joyed at the thoughts of leaving this life and her sorry excuse for a mother behind but her joy made me very suspicious of Kole right away. After packing her meager belongings, Soria arrives to finds Kole’s house abandoned, and when she starts looking for him, she is instead knocked out and then taken only to be forced onto the auction stage. She has no delta & tries to tell them this but she is forced to complete the auction anyway. She receives no bids and believes she might make it out but then a bid is placed and she finds herself bought by the Aegis team. Now against all odds, she has to overcome the abuse from others and the typical deadly and terrifying challenges that come with being a recruit and she does it all without a delta of her own. If you’re a fan of Fourth Wing and The Hunger Games, and lived for Violet and Tairn’s banter, then this one’s for you.
Arena Thieves follows Soria, a girl born without a delta (power), as she navigates a world that worships abilities so much they literally auction people off to decide their fate. Casual. Totally fine. Definitely not rage-inducing at all.
This book is very good at keeping you anxious and desperate to know what happens next. So if you’re not ready to get up and scream from the sheer rage you’ll feel over everything Soria is put through… I suggest you read it anyway 😅
As the ultimate underdog, our deltaless FMC is thrown straight into a den of vipers, and you never know where the next attack is coming from. While other characters survive by being ruthless and merciless, Soria has to rely on cunning, adaptability, and quick thinking. Watching her character growth unfold was incredibly satisfying. Her determination to remain loyal to herself—to survive without losing who she is—was empowering and kept me rooting for her.
The world-building, power system, cast of characters, and overall themes are well crafted and engaging. While you can see influences from other popular series (Fourth Wing especially), Madison Zehring does an excellent job of making the world her own and adding her own flair.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book—and judging by the amount of spam updates I sent Madison on social media while reading, I clearly had a very good time 😅
Now, honesty corner. While I do love Soria… it took a minute for her to grow on me. I completely understand her instinct to hide behind others in a world that glorifies power, but early on she felt a bit too passive for my personal taste. Her initial plan—to find bodyguards among complete strangers in a power-driven society—stressed me out in ways I was not emotionally prepared for. That said, she does grow, and her character arc is rewarding—it’s just a bit of a journey getting there.
I also found myself wishing for a little more emphasis on training or preparation. Some of the challenges she overcomes felt slightly too easy considering how far she makes it, though she suffers immensely—often more than other characters—which kept the stakes feeling high.
The romance though??? I was locked in. I am firmly Team Jude over what’s-his-face (you’ll know when you get there… Gale who?). Jude is written as a fearless, ruthless captain who shows no mercy, and the POV chapter gave great insight into his mindset. The banter was top-tier, the spice was 🤌, and the character dynamics were strong. As a certified slow-burn enthusiast, I personally would’ve loved the tension to drag out just a little longer—like, painfully unbearable slow-burn tension—but this relationship progressed a bit faster than I would’ve liked, and that’s very much a me thing.
Some of the reveals stood out enough that the suspense didn’t fully land for me, but the ending? Oof. I’m absolutely ready to dive straight into Book 2.
For a debut novel, I was genuinely impressed, and I can’t wait to see what Madison has in store for the rest of the series.

This author reached out to me on TikTok and asked if I’d be interested in reading her debut novel. I was intrigued and of course accepted! I gave this 3.75 stars – rounded up for Goodreads!
The basic premise….Soria is the underdog FMC who has had to fight her way through life. She is born without magic and is forced into an auction which changes the course of her life forever. Forced to endure endless trauma and hardships, Soria overcomes many obstacles and finds friends along the way….enter the broody, ruthless, and wildly feared Captain. Jude is everything you’d expect an MMC to be in a romantasy – but as always, there is more to him than what we see on the surface.
The pace of this book is fast, there is a lot of angst with a good mix of political intrigue and magic.
I loved the banter back and forth between the Sicar and Soria. This story was full of twists and turns.
My honest criticism -- and why I had to deduct 1.25 stars for this…literally every single time anyone or anything gave Soria advice, she ignored it. She showed very little growth and maturity. I kept waiting for her to at some point have the maturity to stop and think – but to the bitter end, she went against what everyone was telling her. I absolutely loved the first 50% of this book, but as I got past the halfway mark and this continued happening, it honestly wore me down and ended up making me frustrated. I think it was meant to highlight her anger and her desperate desire to have control over just one thing in her life but as each decision caused harm to herself or others, it was hard to look past. I also wish this had been told from different POV’s not just Soria’s.
That being said – I would absolutely recommend this book. This is a debut novel by this author and I have zero doubt she is going to do great things with this series. I will absolutely read book 2!
The basic premise….Soria is the underdog FMC who has had to fight her way through life. She is born without magic and is forced into an auction which changes the course of her life forever. Forced to endure endless trauma and hardships, Soria overcomes many obstacles and finds friends along the way….enter the broody, ruthless, and wildly feared Captain. Jude is everything you’d expect an MMC to be in a romantasy – but as always, there is more to him than what we see on the surface.
The pace of this book is fast, there is a lot of angst with a good mix of political intrigue and magic.
I loved the banter back and forth between the Sicar and Soria. This story was full of twists and turns.
My honest criticism -- and why I had to deduct 1.25 stars for this…literally every single time anyone or anything gave Soria advice, she ignored it. She showed very little growth and maturity. I kept waiting for her to at some point have the maturity to stop and think – but to the bitter end, she went against what everyone was telling her. I absolutely loved Arena Thieves. It’s one of those fantasy books that pulls you in fast and then keeps surprising you with its depth and character growth.
The story takes place in a world where magic determines your worth, and if you don’t have it, you’re nothing. The plot follows a young woman (Soria) who should never have ended up in the auction system at all, yet through a twist of fate, she’s forced into a brutal environment where power, survival, and loyalty are constantly tested. The plot unfolds in a way that’s exciting without being overwhelming, and the pacing kept me hooked the entire time.
One of my favourite aspects of the book is the growth of Soria. She starts off underestimated, emotionally scarred, and unsure of her place in the world, but watching her adapt, harden, and slowly learn her own strength was incredibly satisfying. Her journey feels earned, every step forward comes with setbacks, fear, and difficult choices, which makes her growth feel real. Although she still has a long way to go with her fiery temper and inability to follow advice from her Acolyte!
The dynamic between the FMC and the MMC is full of sharp edges and mistrust. Their interactions are charged, slow-burn, and complicated. It is great when they do finally get it together, although it is not all smooth sailing from that point. There’s also the lingering shadow of a past love and betrayal, and I really hope Soria gets her vengeance and doesn’t just forgive and forget!

Overall I thought this was a really good book. It is aSingle POV from Soria, a young woman who is growing up in the outskirts of town with a derelict mother. She is in a relationship with this guy named Kole. They are growing up in a country that auctions off people with powers to different organizations of their country while it appears everyone else gets just left behind. Soria gets caught up in this auction process even though she has no powers. And the book goes through her journey at one of these organizations where they go through trials to become the most powerful. As the weakest link she obviously gets picked on (ahem, tortured) by other people in the program, but finds her way by making her own family and ultimately growing is spine. While she's in the program she meets a man by the name of Jude who she has instant chemistry with but also Instant hate love relationship.
Leaving a review without too many spoilers is super difficult.
This book could have easily been like 600 pages or 2 books. I wanted to get to know the side characters more/have more interaction with them. It felt like a lot of the stuff that happened to the side characters happened off Page. I wish we could had more details about their training, school work, and the ‘battles’ everyone goes through. Even more details about how normal people are living and more details about the country itself and their enemies which I'm guessing we'll get explored in book two.

I seem to have a sixth sense for picking out debut novels out of nowhere that happen to be amazing. I stumbled upon Madison Zehring’s call for reviewers in a Facebook group I don’t even belong to, and I am so glad I did. Arena Thieves is one of those rare books that doesn't just entertain you—it ignites your own dreams of becoming a writer. I was hooked from the very first page.
Madison has created a world of magic, intense training, and high-stakes trials that you become immediately immersed in. This type of writing feels like a natural talent rather than something achieved over a lifetime of practice. It is impossible to put down; I actually had to force myself to stop reading just so I could get some sleep and recharge!
The emotional core of this book is what truly sets it apart:
• Soria’s Journey: Her relationship with a narcissistic jerk (Kole) is painfully relatable. Watching her navigate that manipulation while learning to trust again was beautiful.

Arena Thieves by Madison Zehring was a fantastic dark academia fantasy that had a unique magic system, strong FMC, and MMC.
Soria, the FMC, is a poor woman without a delta. The system of magic within this world. Those with a delta are sent to auction where they are bought by the highest bidder, or killed. Soria meets the MMC, Jude, when he bids on her for the Aegis organization, despite her not having a delta.
I really enjoyed getting to know Soria. She is a fantastic character who works hard to overcome everything set in her way. I also like that she gets understandably upset about her situation. She still fights through it. She wants to survive. But, she’s not simply accepting what is happening to her.
Jude is the Captain of Aegis and has a powerful delta. He initially is a problem for Soria, but, their relationship changes as the story develops.
I would not consider them true enemies-to-lovers. However, there is definite tension between them from the beginning that they have to overcome. I do enjoy how their relationship develops.
Something I wish we got more of is Soria’s background. We get bits and pieces, but, I feel a lot is missing. Of course it’s very possible her story is being saved for the next book, so I will hold off more judgement there.
I also liked what happened between Soria and her first love. Without any spoilers, I was happy with how she handled the situation with him.
Overall, I do recommend this book! Especially if you like dark academia, magic systems, and animal familiars.

After finishing this book, I felt it was as if 4th wing and the serpent and wings of night had a baby. I enjoyed the military academy vibes in the book. As the reader you know something is amiss since she was taken by the guard to be auctioned off, we just don’t know why. Soria I think is more relatable to the readers since because she is the underdog and has a medical condition that limits her while she is training.
Tension between Soria and Jude was great throughout the book. When it has been revealed why he purchased her and how he was forced into the captain position, I LOVE when pieces of the plot just place together like that.
You learn about the world throughout the book, verses the world building just being in the beginning.
I would hope in future books the reason/explanation for why she was able to enter the door to battle the Hydra would be explained in more detail, because that was something I can look past but just hope we get more information about, since was wasn’t suppose to have a delta.

- the bird she had was a phoenix
- the phoenix giving her delta (honestly just thought she already had one but it wasn’t relieved yet)
- Ona dying at the end

I was an ARC reader for this book, and I cannot find my original review and I want to be sure that this books gets it, and honestly… it’s so good it would be worthy of a second review anyway.
This book completely swept me away. The world building was immersive without being overwhelming — layered, vivid, and so easy to sink into. I felt like I was living inside this world rather than just reading about it.
And the chemistry? Absolutely electric.
The enemies-to-lovers tension was done so well. The banter, the slow burn, the underlying pull between the FMC and MMC — you could feel it simmering beneath every interaction. When it finally ignites? Worth. The. Wait. The spice was perfectly balanced with the emotional connection, making every scene hit even harder.
You are led to believe that the FMC weak but in reality she is strong and her arc is so well done, without being too much, and the MMC? Infuriating, magnetic, and impossible not to fall for. Their dynamic is the kind that keeps you flipping pages way past bedtime.
And that cliffhanger?! I was not prepared. I just sat there staring at the last page, questioning my life choices — because now I have to wait for book two. (This may truly be the downfall of reading ARCs.)
Needless to say, I will be first in line when the second book drops.
