The Amity Incident

Rate this book
T'reka just wanted to learn. Unfortunately for her, her entire species views scientific thinking as a form of insanity. And when she wants to learn all about the various venomous, poisonous, and outright deadly life forms on a land mass named Toxic Island, you can almost see why. Little did she know that when she committed her life to the study of this strange and hostile land, there was already a colony of monsters setting up housekeeping. Now she's face-to-face with the most dangerous life form in the known universe, and desperately trying to forge peace with the horrible creatures twice her size and four times her weight! They call themselves... HUMANS! [We're mostly harmless, we swear.]

I might be biased because I wrote this book, but it must be my best seller for a reason. You have gender and colour representation, a decent first-contact scenario, and people actually working to better themselves as well as make a better world from scratch.

Humans have never been very good at sharing, but these humans are willing to give it a solid try. Two species are pretty much stuck with each other on this new planet and they have to make a go of it or perish. On the way they learn that Humans are "Space Orcs" and the official term for it is "Deathworlder".

This book was a delight, especially as it pays homage to the tumblr community and #humans are space orcs in particular. I noticed clever references to specific threads that I'd previously taken part in. It's a thoughtful take on both utopian community design and first contact. Highly recommend.

This was a neat dive into the whole “humans are space orcs” category. Really enjoyed it.
