Want a creepy story where the MC talks face to face with Death himself? Check out this story below! Beware; there are some events that are hinted throughout the book that may trigger some readers. *Readers discretion is advised*.
The Baron and Me is a neat telling of a classic Grim Reaper story where he known to the main character as Baron Samedi. Sam, our protagonist, is dealing with issues of SH as we’re introducing to the Baron himself waiting for Sam to make her next move. Will she do so and join Baron Samedi in the afterlife or will she choose life instead? With family by herself and supernatural creatures appearing around every corner, Sam must protect the thinning veil of our world and the supernatural world from colliding, wrecking mayhem before it’s too late to be saved!
First of all, I really enjoyed this book from start to finish! This story is very well written and caught my attention from the very beginning. The characters have great dialogue rapport with one another and makes you feel like you’re in the same room with them. If you enjoy reading about voodoo, mysticism, with a mix of supernatural creepy creatures like vampires and zombies, you’ll enjoy reading this story!

This story was fabulous and needs to be inshrined alongside Ray Bradbury’s ‘The Halloween Tree’. While not ‘specifically’ pertaining to Halloween like the Bradbury story, ‘Walking with the Baron’ does take place on Halloween and the following Day of the Dead.
While I’m as white as white can be with a thoroughly Nordic/Germanic/English heritage, I’ve always been interested in learning about other cultures and their assorted beliefs. Voodoo being one of the particularly fascinating ones. Needless to say Baron Samedi has been on my radar since seeing James Bond’s ‘Live and Let Die’ as a kid with the inestimable Geoffrey Holder playing the good Baron.
The explanations of the loa and their combining of Haitian/African Voudun and Catholicism is exquisitely presented in a down to earth and easily understandable way here. Along with a main protagonist and her family and friends that are relatable and a fun(ish) storyline. I really liked Sam, Jules, & Gran and Mags grows on you, (really)!!
Here’s hoping there’s a story in the making dealing with Jules and here Latina heritage and beliefs to bookend this story!

A spooky adventure about a young girl, Death and her family.
It was a fun read that I was swept along with.
The world was easy to imagine along with the not so friendly characters that Sam came across. The Southern history and vodou added to the believability of the place and people.
Chapters 1-3 I found hard to dive into. The grammatical errors and over use of similes left the book feeling quite childish.
The writing style seemed to change after that to have a more adult tone to it. This was much more enjoyable to read than the beginning.
Modern macabre, YA, urban fiction, dark humour, supernatural lovers will enjoy this one.

This was a very quick, well put together read. I enjoyed Baron's character and was able to keep up with the French/Haitian culture references. The story flowed well and gave just enough detail without being over bearing into the vodou references! If this is being touted as YA, it is definitely written well for adults as well. Would check this author out again in the future.
