2.5 stars. I bought this book, because I used to have a pretty hearty obsession with the idea of Russia. I picked it up now for a reading challenge where I had to read a book set in Russia and this ended up being the best option I had. This is a book that I would have bought with the best intentions of reading, but in all likelihood I probably never would have read it – I just have too many unread books in my library. So I'm glad for reading challenges that push me to pick up books I wouldn't otherwise have a chance to get to. It’s been about 12 years since I bought this book and it was not new when I bought it. It felt a little weird reading about life in contemporary Russia from a book that’s 20 years old. I enjoyed most of the pictures in this book. I questioned the inclusion of some of the pictures. The writing in the book on the other hand…left something to be desired. I found the introduction essentially incomprehensible, I just couldn’t figure out what it was trying to say. It kind of felt like it was trying to explain things to me that I just couldn’t conceptualize because they were new to me and I needed pictures of them as well or something. I’m not sure I really understood the theme of the captions, either. Some felt like they were too high-level, some felt like they were too in the weeds, some felt too unrelated to the picture. They just kind of felt a bit disjointed throughout. This book definitely was not as well-done as I would have hoped it would be, but at least I've finally gotten it off my TBR.
