It's 1894. Charlotte and her American family have been living in France for two years where her father has learned the new way of painting called Impressionism. Now her father's paintings are going to be featured in a show in New York and the whole family is going along. New York is a hustling, bustling city like no other in the world, and Charlotte records it all in her colorful journal. Illustrated with striking museum reproductions, beautiful watercolor paintings, and collages, the book also includes biographical sketches of the featured painters. Charlotte's exciting journey to the city that never sleeps will make any reader shout, "I love New York!"
This has been sitting by my bed taunting me. Finally got round to reading it. Another lovely story about Charlotte travelling to New York, and her daily life surrounded by artists and famous folks of this time period. It has a lovely listing at the back of all the real artworks that are shown in the book. Plus a mini biography of each of the artists mentioned too. A great diary story for the budding artist. It's also got french words all through the book since her cook/nanny keeps trying to teach her some. Makes for a delightful read. Longer than a regular picture book.
I just stumbled upon this book and love the historical aspect and french vocabulary incorporation. It's a story written from a little girl's perspective. Her father is learning how to paint in the Impressionist manner in France and the family travels to New York. Little Charlotte encounters different famous artists on her adventures. This is a lovely book with very nice illustrations and real paintings.
Fourth in the Charlotte series. Back in New York after two years in Europe another journal with her impressions of painters and writers. Even though these are children's books adults would enjoy them too. I do.
What a great way to learn! Travel along with Charlotte & her family in 1894...& learn about some of the history of New York, as well as art histroy & some artists too! She offers quite a few 'gems' in this cute little book! I'll certainly look forward to more travels with Charlotte!
Charming little wish fulfillment book with educational bits spattered here and there. I really like the calming nature of these books -- everything is lovely and pretty and sophisticated and sweet. It's short enough to make that sort of storyless story sustainable.
This book is a great example of historical fiction for young readers. I like the use of actual historical art throughout the book to widen children's horizons.
