Il était une fois en France conte l’histoire de Joseph Joanovici, juif roumain devenu l’homme le plus riche de France pendant l’occupation. Ferrailleur, collabo, résistant, il fut pour certain un criminel, pour d’autres un héros. C’est le cheminement de ce personnage ambigu baptisé le “roi de Paris” par ceux qui ont croisé sa route, que relate avec justesse cette saga au thème délicat. “Monsieur Joseph” se confie sur son lit de mort aux côtés de Lucie-Fer, celle qui fut sa plus fidèle compagne. Intelligence avec l’ennemi, corruption de fonctionnaires, contrebande, enrichissement personnel et même meurtre seront reprochés à la Libération à celui qui possédait pendant l’occupation un appartement en plein coeur de la préfecture de police. Portant fièrement la rosette de la résistance, JOSEPH reçoit les plus huppés du Tout-Paris, alors que de sombres nuages annoncent la fin de son règne…

About the author

Born in 1976, Fabien Nury began his career by co-writing with Xavier Dorison the script of W.E.S.T (Dargaud), a hit series illustrated by Christian Rossi (six volumes between 2003 and 2011). Nury independently wrote Je suis Légion (2004-2007, Humanoids Associés), a trilogy illustrated by the American John Cassaday. Translated into eight languages, the series continues with several other illustrators under the title Les chroniques de Légion (Glénat). In 2007 he also started working on Le maître de Benson Gate (Dargaud) with Renaud Garreta. From 2007 to 2012, Nury wrote the script for the six volumes of Il était une fois en France (Glénat). The historical series, illustrated by Sylvain Vallée, received wide critical and public acclaim (850,000 copies sold). Amongst other achievements, in 2011 he received an award for best international series at the Angoulême Comics Festival. Since then Fabien Nury has been gaining success in various genres: Mort de Staline (The Death of Stalin, Dargaud/Europe Comics, forthcoming), in historical narrative; Steve Rowland, volume 5 of the XIII Mystery series (Dargaud, art by Richard Guérineau) in thriller; Corey Silas ( Glénat, art by Pierre Alary) in detective series; and Atar Gull (Dargaud, art by Brüno) in literary adaptation, based on the novel by Eugène Sue. In 2013, he created Tyler Cross with Brüno, (Tyler Cross, Dargaud/Europe Comics, 2015) a noir graphic novel. The album was praised by both critics and readers (over 50,000 copies sold) with volume two in August 2015. In 2014, Fabien Nury published the fourth and final volume of L'or et le sang (Glénat), the script by Maurin Defrance and art by Merwan and Fabien Bedouel. With Tierry Robin he created the two-part series Mort au Tsar (Death to the Tsar, Dargaud/Europe Comics, 2015). In 2014, with Eric Henninot he also published Fils du soleil (Dargaud), an adventure album adapted from two novels by Jack London. As for audiovisual, Fabien Nury co-wrote with Dorison the scripts to a feature film Les brigades du Tigre (directed by Jérôme Cornuau, 2006) and a TV movie Pour toi, j'ai tué (directed by Laurent Heynemann, 2012).

This is the first part of a 6 books series that deals the story of Joseph Joanovici, a controversial billionaire Jew in France during World War 2 that was rumored to have worked for both sides.
The story mixes real historical facts with fiction ( even to this day what really happened isn't clear). The whole series won several prizes in France including the the best series award at the famous Angouleme expo in 2011.
Based on this book alone I have to say those awards were deserved. The writing is very good and the art fits the story very well.

I actually bought the collector box containing the 6 books as well as some signed pictures so I am going to be able to enjoy the whole series ;)

Wat een meesterwerkje, dit eerste deel van 'Er Was Eens'. Intelligent, meeslepend scenario + schitterend tekenwerk. Heb me deze reeks aangeschaft omdat ik 'Katanga' van hetzelfde duo zo uitzonderlijk sterk vond. Het lijkt er nu op dat deze voorganger van hetzelfde kaliber is maar ik zal met plezier de volgende delen lezen vooraleer dezelfde kwaliteitsstempel erop te slaan.

The time skips are quite confusing, especially those that are not indicated, which actually annoys me: why indicate some but not others? It makes no sense. Moreover, I had to skip back and forth a few times to compare faces/clothes as some characters do look similar.

Those things aside, I am intrigued to learn more. I like the story and the mood!

✅ Les points que j'ai aimés :
L'intrigue était vraiment très intéressante et originale car elle s'intéresse au rôle des collaborateurs durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, sujet encore assez peu abordé dans la littérature. De plus, la tension était constante, entre les différentes manigances politiques mêlées à l'économie et la vie privée des protagonistes. Les personnages m'ont paru bien travaillés, chacun paraissant avoir plusieurs couches de complexité et d'ambiguïté.

❌ Les points qui m'ont gênés :
Cependant, j'ai trouvé qu'il y avait tellement de personnages qu'il m'arrivait d'avoir des difficultés à les identifier, et donc à suivre l'intrigue, déjà complexe sans cela. Enfin, les différentes lignes temporelles s'enchaînaient parfois sans indication claire, ce qui me laissait parfois un peu perdue.

➡️ Bref, bien que l'histoire était très riche et passionnante, la multitude de personnages et les transitions temporelles m'ont parfois déstabilisée.

Löyhästi tositapahtumiin perustuva sarjakuva kertoo juutalaisesta Joseph Joanovicistä, josta kasvaa toisen maailmansodan jälkeen vaikutusvaltainen gangsteri. Hän korruptoi Ranskassa niin poliisia kuin päättäjiäkin ja sarjan ensimmäisen osan perusteella on haastavasti oikeuden eteen saatava kaveri.

Isokokoinen albumi on tyylikkäästi, joskaan ei mieleenpainuvasti, piirretty.

Tarinan seuranta on paikoitellen haastavaa johtuen monista aikahypyistä ja takaumista (joista osassa vuosi ja aika lukijalle kerrotaan, osassa ei) sekä melkoisesta määrästä henkilöitä.

Juonessa on kuitenkin mielenkiintoisia ihmisten välisiä jännitteitä ja suhteita. Albumin alku ja loppu myös rakennettu hienosti.

Varasin samantien sarjan seuraavat kolme osaa, sen verran lupaava tämä ensimmäinen osa oli.

Dans ce premier tome, les auteurs nous présente un personnage à travers diverses époques de sa vie sur de courts moments. Ces changements d'époque rendent la compréhension complexe tout comme l'est le personnage principal Joseph Joanovici. il est difficile à cerner comme le fait remarquer ses proches dont sa femme qu'il connait depuis enfant.
ll est difficile encore de voir où va nous mener cette histoire, avec la multiplicité des personnages et des différentes problématiques qui semblent émerger, dont celui du positionnement de chacun pendant la seconde guerre mondiale.

This story skips back and forth between different time periods. Sometimes it is clearly indicated, but sometimes it is not so easy to follow, and some of the less central characters look confusingly similar. Nevertheless, the plot and the characters were interesting, especially since it is inspired by historical events. I will want to read volume 2 if I can find it.

Duet twórców Fabien Nury i Sylvain Vallee wykorzystując mieszankę faktów i komiksowej fikcji, postanowił zmierzyć się z losami naprawdę mocno niejednoznacznej postaci, tym samym odkrywając przed czytelnikiem pewne mroki historii Francji XX wieku.

Joseph Joanovic to postać, o której nawet teraz nie możemy powiedzieć, że wiemy wszystko. Był on bowiem mocno tajemniczą i niejednoznaczną osobą. Dla jednych będzie on przestępcą, kolaborantem i zdrajcą, dla innych zaś bohaterem, któremu należą się największe peany. Sierota, Żydowski imigrant z Rumunii, parający się zbieraniem złomu, dzięki któremu dorobił się niebotycznego majątku. Osoba współpracująca zarówno z ruchem oporu, jak i okupantem, sprawnie balansująca na granicy dobra i zła, określana swego czasu jako „król Paryża”.

Niezwykłość i złożoność Josepha Joanovica przekłada się na mocno wieloznaczny charakter całego scenariusza, jaki można znaleźć w tomie pierwszym. Autorzy balansują tu na wspomnianej granicy fikcji i rzeczywistości. W każdej z zaprezentowanych scen starają się zachować daleko idącą neutralność. Pozostawiają oni więc czytelnikowi swobodę oceny poczynań poszczególnych bohaterów (nie tylko Josepha). Życie nigdy bowiem nie jest tylko czarno-białe i to właśnie stanowi jądro całej ten historii.

Fabułą oparta jest tu na licznych retrospekcjach (wspomnienia Josepha na łożu śmierci). Ma to w sobie pewną ciekawą dynamikę. Czasem jednak w połączeniu z chęcią przekazania na ograniczonej ilości miejsca zbyt wielu informacji, prowadzi do małej dezorientacji czytelnika. Wpływ na to mają również liczne postacie przewijające się przez komiks, które nie zawsze są dobrze objaśnione. Pomimo tego, że fabuła czasem trochę zbyt galopuje do przodu, całość czyta się z naprawdę niekłamaną przyjemnością i dużym zaangażowaniem.

Je cherchais une nouvelle série de BDs à lire après avoir fini Largo Winch, et voilà une de celles conseillées par mon libraire : j'ai bien fait de l'écouter. Pas de pure fiction, pas d'économie, pas d'aventure, on part cette fois-ci sur les traces d'une personnalité historiques clivante, Joseph Joanovici, avec une narration qui alterne entre son arrivée en France, les prémices de la 2nde guerre mondiale et l'après guerre où un juge essaye de le faire tomber pour collaboration.

J'ignore qu'elle est la part de fiction et de faits historiques dans le récit, mais ça donne en tout cas envie de s'intéresser au sujet.

Je ne comprends pas trop le succès critique rencontré par cette série, qui a été inondée de prix. De même qu'il y a des films qui ne sont que des scénarios mis en images sans aucun intérêt cinématographique, on a ici affaire à une BD dont le scénario est solide, comme toujours chez Fabien Nury, mais dont le dessin et la mise en page sont sans aucun intérêt, convenus, plats, sans art. Autant sur la série Tyler Cross, avec le dessin de Brüno, on a une vraie réussite BD, inventive et jubilatoire, autant là, on n'a qu'une bonne histoire pour série TV, rien de plus.

C’était un récit dense, je n’ai pas pu terminer cette bande-dessinée en une fois. Je n’ai pas réussi à m’attacher aux personnages, cependant ça ne m’a pas empêcher de trouver cette histoire intéressante.
Les dessins sont assez classiques et réalistes, mais efficaces.
J’ai bien aimé ce premier tome.

Un dessin agréable, un scénario qui se déploie avec des flashbacks / forwards intelligents pour brosser l’ensemble de la vie de Joanovici, on se demande ce que vont aborder les prochains volumes mais j’ai hâte d’y être …

So this starts the comic book series, that is rumored to take total of six parts and deals with the story of real life mob boss Joseph Joanovici.

Now I come to the subject as someone, who is not familiar with Joanovici or with French history.
I do know that they had that revolution against Napoleon, that was run by the French resistance movement and led into the explosion of Maginot line during the cold war (a historical event that was magnificently shown in a documentary film The Battle of Algiers).
But when it comes, to the more specific civil history, my knowledge is rather limited.

So I didn’t have that much expectations when diving into this one.
I expected to be treated with loads of nudity, violence, a historically accurate epic, rape, Shakespearian prose, vampires, wizards and all this in 20 pages.
All in all, it’s safe to say, that my expectations were quite minimalistic.

So did I get what I wanted?

Fuck no!

This thing takes total of 56 pages and I’m not to see one tit, clearly an abysmal piece of work which has no place with comic book classics like Barb Wire and Ramba.
Well I did get rape, but the subject was an adult woman so it doesn’t count.

So as a series starter, this is somewhat of a mixed blessing.
It does set the mood rather well and it does introduce us to the situation, shows the players and kicks the story going.
However all this demands a little of getting used to, since the book itself is quite a clusterfuck.

It starts at a year 1905 showing us Joanovici as a child, at the next page we are at his wedding, next pages takes us to year 1965, the next page to 1947 and from there on the story is told in a bunch of flashbacks jumping from the year, situation and place to another like a retarded child with an kangaroo stick.

You get used to this and it does work on its own way, but the fast jumping timeline and the references to past happenings and people that are not explained to us is something to digest at first.
As an first book in a series, this one has a lot of characters in it, that do not form any kind of an personality at this point.
Hope is that they are more fleshed out in the future.

The structure of the pictures, is also something worth noting for.
Sylvian Vallée uses a lot of small pictures, that show as part of a person’s body (like the head, a hand and bit of torso, but nothing more) and there’s a lot of close-ups into a things like eyes, coffee cup, hands, a foot, cat’s-whisker.
And this is something you will notice, it did bother me a bit, but at the same time I liked how Vallée broke down the page, by not settling whit the typical 3x3 structure, but continuously filling the pages with boxes of different kind and shape.

The artwork is quite nice to the eye, nothing spectacular and definitely French, but not bad and it does pull off some great images.

Now I know that this is part of a longer series and so it most likely will form a stronger entirety at the end, but as an singular book, this one left me a little wanting for more.
This one sets the mood, and it’s not a bad book by any means.
But it doesn’t come into any kind of an conclusion at any front, nor does it set an clear situation, where to continue.
It shows us the beginning of Joanovici’s reign and a glimpse of the outcome, but everything between is kind of, meh.

It’s like electrocuting your testicles and finding out that you can feel the pain only with your left testicle, because your right one has formed an necrosis and stopped to feel anything.

Intéressante plongée dans l'histoire à travers le destin de deux réfugiés des polgroms russes sous Nicolas II. On s'y perd un peu mais la narration, le graphisme et l'intrigue sont si prenantes qu'on s'y fait.

Beautifully drawn and interestingly told but the story, to me, cut too many corners. It could've told so much more, in so much more detail.
