Like Opening a Russian Doll
‘Of Kings and Queens’ by Suneeta Misra unfolds eloquently in beautiful prose that used to be called ‘The Kings English’. The writing is remarkably well paced. (I actually counted to see if the measure was ‘alexandrine’.) So much so, you can feel the slight bob of the head, accompanied by a pause, that is so characteristic (maybe just for a ‘foreigner’ like me) of the Indian subcontinent.
At the outset, I did not like the present tense narration, but the life of the youn

This was a very short novella with palace intrigue typical of many old monarchies. There was much room for the author to have explored the political and socio-economic issues raised in the book. There was also a possibility of a romance that went nowhere, although I would have loved for the author to have tackled Ram and Maya as adults.

Set in India, Of Kings and Queens follows Ram, a young teenage boy and his friendship with Maya. Ram is the only son and heir to the King of Mirpur; Maya is the granddaughter of his tutor. When Ram’s teacher has an accident and can no longer travel to Ram for lessons, Ram goes to him, but is surprised to find that Maya will be the one teaching him. The Story....

The story is about Ram, Prince of Mirpur. Mirpur is a semi-independent state of colonial British. His father, the King of Mirpur has a penchant for beautiful women. His numerous marriages are shrouded with mysterious deaths and treacheries. Ram’s own mother had a suspicious demise and she was replaced by the evil stepmother Noor. [I just hate these evil stepmoms but they are the ones who keep the story going. Sigh!]

All these had affected the small boy and he was finding it difficult

Suneeta Misra’s novelette Of Kings and Queens is a fascinating peek inside the lives of both royalty and commoners during India’s late colonial period.

Ram is a boy prince, the only son of an aging Indian vassal king. Considered by his British tutors as a dullard, he finds himself under the instruction of an elderly Indian scholar and his daughter, Maya. It is soon apparent Ram is actually quite intelligent and, over a period of years, Maya and Ram grow fond of one another. Ram is a prince, Ma

"Of Kings and Queens" by Suneeta Misra is a short but poignant story about the heir to an Indian Kingdom and the dangers he faces coming from the families of the other wives of the King. Telling the intrigues and the backstabbing from the perspective of an adolescent man whose mind is less focused on learning and more on girls gives the authentic historical background of pre-independent India a new dimension. The book also tells the story of his childhood sweetheart and her place in the court.

I am a lifelong teacher, having taught in the Maryland school district for the last 15 years. I have also made documentaries and short films, most recently Tinka Tinka: A Dream of Education in Modern India. In my spare time, I love to read mysteries, watch movies, and travel. Look out for my next book about an autistic girl, who overcomes challenges to save her family, and in the process solves a ...more
