THE MOUNTJOY NOVELS - a romantic comedy series, complete with ghosts, musicians, aristocrats and eccentrics in the best style of Wodehouse and Trollope.
Leaving old scandals and looming trouble behind them in the mists of Eyotshire (or so they hope) assorted Mountjoys, friends and acquaintances head southwards one by one to the dazzling blue of the Mediterranean and the island of Aeolus off the coast of
Magdalena Mountjoy, fleeing fog and faithless Valdemar. Thomas Mountjoy, running away from his grim public school. Agatha, fleeing from husband George, who is furious over a lost inheritance. Former music student Thea, escaping from an unhappy love affair. The pugnacious composer ‘Discordant’ Mordaunt, tormenting every musician in earshot with his atonal obsession while the critic Quarles stalks him in search of weakness. Ex-dancer Dido, not fleeing anything or anyone.
Amidst palms and the vapours of a slumbering volcano, secrets come to light and new friendships are formed – but will they survive when the troubles they left behind come out to Aeolus in pursuit?
This was my favorite book in the “Children of Chance” series. Like most of her books, it can be a challenge to keep up with most of the characters. It's fascinating to see how she pulls it all together at the end.
So enjoyed visiting with these characters for a couple of days. Such fun. I have to just add my personal opinion that I really don't like Val at all. No redeeming that I can see ever emerging. Loved his trip to Italy so much. Laughed.
Great for holiday read as light and fairly easy to follow and sprinkled with humour and sunshine. It's different from her other art history novels. Would comment it.
