There she discovers a strange clock which won't be removed from the wall, and a newspaper, The Mythical Weekly, aimed at supernaturals. Quickly accepting that this isn't a hoax and that supernatural creatures do exist, she decides that vampires and other mythical creatures must have just as much trouble finding love as she and her friends do, and so sets up a dating agency exclusively for them.

Her first client, Victor, is a vampire who is sick of dating undead women and wants to find a human wife. Shalini knows just the woman, but other vampires aren't terribly happy about one of their own mixing with humans, it's beneath them.

With no knowledge of the supernatural world, it's initially difficult for Shalini to find matches for her clients, but soon she becomes more involved in supernatural affairs than she would like. It's not long before she and her friends are in danger, and Shalini must find a way to save them all, while completing her third year of university and navigating her own fledgling romance.

I liked the Melbourne locations, with places like Melbourne University, Highpoint and South Yarra featuring, although occasionally it did feel a little like place-name dropping.

Although it was a really interesting premise with a lot of comedic potential, the story didn't really grab me and I never felt particularly invested in the characters. Shalini's jump from stressed uni student with a missing guardian to, "Hey, I'll open a dating agency!" just didn't gel for me, and I don't think the book completely lived up to its potential. It also ends rather abruptly, and the fate of the characters will need to be decided in a sequel.

It is billed as a New Adult title, although unlike books in the genre, this is a very chaste romance, with only one kiss taking place.

At $3.99 for the e-book, it's worth downloading and giving it a go, particularly for those doing the diversity challenge as there are several non-Anglo characters, including the lead. ...more

I will start this review by saying that I received an online copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange of a honest review.

The Lost Souls Dating Agency sounded like a cute and silly little book to read when I looked for something easy to distract myself and relax. It promised to be a New Adult book - a category I don't read much - but I thought that with the right dosage of fun, fantasy and romance it would be nice.
It started quite well with a small mystery that got my attention. It also he I will start this review by saying that I received an online copy of this book through Netgalley in exchange of a honest review.

The Lost Souls Dating Agency sounded like a cute and silly little book to read when I looked for something easy to distract myself and relax. It promised to be a New Adult book - a category I don't read much - but I thought that with the right dosage of fun, fantasy and romance it would be nice.
It started quite well with a small mystery that got my attention. It also helped that the action was taking place in countries that I don't know much about, creating curiosity and some exoticism to the plot. Between Dubai and Australia, countries so far away from mine (one more similar than another but still with evident cultural differences), I was expecting a little bit of context about the life of Shalini on them.
Unfortunately not only I didn't get that and also didn't get much context about the main character, which is odd. Don't get me wrong, Shalini was there during the whole book,but we didn't had the chance to hear her voice on the majority of the plot. Because of that she started being a strange character for me. The process that results in the creating of the Dating Agency didn't make sense at all. For me, it felt like desiring to be a millionaire and waking up the next day to find out you are one. I think that a little more explanation was need from her, as well as more information about the idea behind the creation of this agency but specially the reason why she wanted it in first place.
The characters that interacted with her were funny and created some colorful moments that kept me reading the book. In fact, they were the saviors of this book and created funny interactions and entertainment. Even so, that bonus wasn't enough to explain, for instance, how everything worked so easily for her and not even the moments supposed to create tension had that effect in the reader.
When I was in the middle of the book, I found myself trying to guess how she would resolve all the untied knots until the end of the book, since when I searched online I didn't find any information that contradicted the book was a stand alone. Turns out it ends with a cliffhanger and it can only means there are supposed to be more. Even if I enjoyed some of the characters and was curious to know what will happen to then, if more books follow I will pass the opportunity of reading them. Really thinking about it, the problem is that this book is more similar to fanfiction or a small novella than to a "real" book and I probably created too many expectations for it. This is such a fun book. Written in a really chatty first person style, Shalini’s foray into the business of matchmaking is a quick, easy, thoroughly enjoyable tale mixing paranormal with the mundane, and poking plenty of fun at traditional stories and tropes.

Much as I enjoyed this book, I have to admit the premise is pretty shaky. Firstly, where does Shalini’s business acumen come from? She refers to it once or twice when she’s deciding what to do with the warehouse, but it comes out of nowhere This is such a fun book. If she was doing a business degree, fine, but she’s studying anthropology. There’s also the fact that a warehouse doesn’t exactly suggest matchmaking business to me. It’s a warehouse?! What does she do with all that empty space? It’s not like she sets up meeting rooms or anything.

Her methods are also pretty suspect once she starts going, but I get the feeling that there’s a lot more to Shalini’s matchmaking skills than she yet realises. Something connected to her unknown parents and her connection with the mysterious clock, so I’m not too bothered about that. It might have been nice if her best friends hadn’t vanished from the story as easily as they do, but since they’re replaced by her brilliant receptionist and cute Will, I didn’t mind as much as I might have.

As for the ending – way too abrupt. It just… stops right in the middle of something important. Less of a cliffhanger, more of a guillotine. I hate it when that happens.

Those negatives aside, though, this really is a fun book that was so easy to read that I zipped through it. I loved everything about her second client, from the pushy father to the interesting shape-shifting animals involved. The first provided plenty of fodder for poking fun at vampire myths, but in a good natured way. The characters are interesting and funny, the situations amusing, the underlying mysteries potentially very interesting and I was definitely left wanting more.

If you like heated New Adult reads then this won’t be for you, because although Shalini’s age falls in the right range for a NA heroine, in truth the story is more YA in tone. If, however, you like fun paranormals that definitely don’t take themselves too seriously and are clearly setting the scene for more to come, then you should like this. I did.

I was quite intrigued to find out what this new author would do with her paranormal dating service as I have read a series with a similar theme. The idea of a dating service for the supernatural community is an hilarious one and indeed the author does use a light hearted approach with characters that are very appealing. There are still quite a lot of things to be revealed I think as at the end of this book I was left with questions but this is an interesting beginning .

I feel like this book has a lot of potential, but unfortunately it;s not living up to any of that potential at the moment. Based on the NetGalley blurb, I was expecting this book to be a sort of supernatural matchmaker meets a Veronica Mars-style character. The individual pieces of a great book are all there, it's just the execution that's lacking.

Well this could have been a great story but the author decided to make it more of a very long teaser with a cliffhanger ending.

Not too much to say since the story meanders around, introduces us to the supernatural world of the authors making (which was interesting) and then leads us through many pages of "a day in the life" and ends up with a cliff hanger just when it was getting really good, almost nothing has been solved, I detest this kind of blackmail by authors and try not to to support it. ...more
