Review: A NEW DAY IN AMERICA by Theo Gangl

Gritty, graphic, fatal, heart-pounding, dangerous--what is left but survival? One year after New York City collapsed in a fiery blast, and most of the few remaining succumbed to airborne plague, still a few hardy or sneaky survive. Nostradamus (Nos) Greene and young daughter Naomi are among them; his wife and two adolescent sons died in the destruction. Nos carries on in order to protect Naomi, his Special Forces background all too often handy. This nove

 Post apocalypse lite

A NEW DAY IN AMERICA is a post apocalyptic story featuring not one but two reasons for the downfall of civilization in the U.S. - nuclear bombs and a pandemic. Either one would have been plenty. Having both is kind of overkill, so to speak, because neither one is given the in-depth page time they should have received, especially the nukes.

Nostradamus (Nos) and his six year-old daughter Naomi (Nay) survived the bomb that hit New York City but the rest of their family didn't.

A very good read. Gangi is an excellent storyteller, and this is a good story. Lee Childs' Jack Reacher meets Stephen King's The Stand, without Stephen King's excessive wordiness or Lee Child's excessive military minutia. Crisp, clear writing moves the tale along at a good pace, and the story is compelling. Although the story of surviving the Apocalypse has been told many times over the centuries, Gangi still manages to make it a fresh, imaginative tale. If you're looking for a good read for the ...more

The Road with religious fanatics instead of cannibals. Like some other readers I found the fight sequences too lengthy and often skipped right through them to get on with the story. Some distracting typos, too, like 'metals' instead of 'medals.' The novel also ends abruptly but then tacks on an epilogue with a completely new character. Oh, wait. This is going to be a trilogy, right? :-\ Because a standalone novel is just unheard of.;-)

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was alright. It definitely reminded me of The Last of Us and the Fallout series, but all the focus on the fight sequences kind of made my eyes glaze over. The ending felt a bit rushed, and I wish it had been edited a little more tightly. However, it was a pretty decent read.

A strong lead character, a father daughter relationship, a post apocalyptic landscape and a quest - what's not to love? Although this was a little formulaic, it was readable, compelling and - I'm a little sad that there isn't a sequel to pick up immediately. I'll be looking forward to it.

Fast-paced and thrilling, this post-apocalyptic thriller follows a father who will do anything to protect his young daughter. In the course of this book, he does just about anything. Every page left me wondering what would happen next, and the tension never lets up.

This book is basically a big action movie. Not a lot of character substance or meat to it, but some nice visuals. Lots of fighting. The main character, Nos, is a little unbelievable because he is just THAT good at killing people. Not the best book, but not a bad read.
