He's the Butcher of Boston. And I'm the Omega my father bartered away.

Willow

I am a damaged omega, a political pawn with scars to prove it. When I can, I disappear to the local rescues, working with dogs and horses that are as broken as I am. Anything to distract me from the cage my father keeps me in.

Until he drags me to a meeting that changes everything.

It wasn't a negotiation. It was a sale.

My father offered me to Kaelen Finnegan - head of the Irish Mob - to secure the election. I expected a monster. A terrifying alpha. Instead, I found the one man who might finally set me free.

Kaelen

Since my da passed, I've ruled Boston. I am a ruthless alpha.

I don't do mercy, and I don't do distractions.

Then, a senator arrives on my doorstep with a fiery omega who smells like fate.

When he strikes her, my control snaps. I don't deal in people, but this little omega is staying with me.

Everyone in Boston is about to learn a simple No one touches what is mine.

Kaelen is a dark mafia omegaverse romance featuring an arranged/forced marriage, a possessive, morally grey alpha and omega. A wounded heroine, finding her strength. High heat. HEA.

I really hoped for fun when it comes to this book, and it did deliver!!!

I love the found family trope, and I was extremely happy to find it in this book. It’s always so moving to see main characters getting the love they have always deserved.

When it comes to the main characters, I really liked both. Willow was such a strong girl, despite all the things that her dad did to her. Kaelen bought me with how soft he was for Willow, being pretty commanding to his people at the same time. The contrast was great. I wasn’t bothered by the insta love, that’s ov ffs, you need all the insta love you can have!!!

The secondary characters were great too. I can’t wait for the next book!!! The author has been hinting at the MMF romance (Kaelen’s brother Aidan, his boyfriend Torin, and Willow’s bestie Sam), so I’ll be looking forward to it.

I could clearly tell that the author wrote some ov on ao3, because yes, this is exactly what I wanted!!! Nesting was written perfectly, loved everything about heats, bonding, knotting, purring, alpha/omega used so often! Every aspect of omegaverse was perfect. No notes.👌🏼

Why not 5 stars? The book plot wise felt a bit similar to the author’s debut. I’m not saying that everything was repeated, but some of the plot points appeared in both, just in a different setting.
I also didn’t like certain things I’ve already mentioned and quoted at the beginning of my reading (go see my reading activity). Please, for the love of god, do not mention that the mmc had plenty of sex with omegas, betas, and even an alpha. Just no. I also wanted to know how long it has been for him, and I didn’t find that info anywhere. Please, make sure the fmc enjoys her previous sex life (because I wasn’t sure if she did), do not make fmcs lives miserable, they deserve all the best. I am happy that at least she had some experience lol, I can really hope it was great. Am I over dramatic? Probably, but I do not care.
Besides that? I loved everything.

Thank you to Michelle Love for sending me the ARC!!!

****Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC copy of Kaelen: A Dark Mafia Omegaverse by Michelle Love in exchange for an honest review.

Omegaverse is easily one of my favorite genres. Whenever I fall into a reading slump, I almost always reach for an omegaverse book, and Kaelen: A Dark Mafia Omegaverse ended up being one of those comfort reads for me.

I usually gravitate toward why choose omegaverse stories, so picking up an MF one was slightly outside my norm. Still, I genuinely enjoyed this book. Kaelen and Willow work surprisingly well together as a couple. They both carry their own flaws, and while those flaws are not perfectly complementary, they feel realistic. Their relationship is not built on perfection but on mutual understanding and affection, which made them engaging to read.

The dark omegaverse elements added an extra layer of enjoyment for me. The mafia setting, combined with the darker tone, suited the story well and kept it entertaining without feeling unnecessarily heavy.

If I had to point out one drawback, it would be the pacing at the beginning. Things moved a little too fast, and some chapters felt slightly disjointed, which briefly pulled me out of the story. This was the only aspect that truly bothered me.

Overall, despite the rushed start, this was an enjoyable and satisfying read, especially for anyone looking for a dark omegaverse story to get out of a reading slump.

Thanks to Michelle for an an ARC copy of Kaelen.

“…and she was my executioner. At least she was the prettiest headsman I’d ever seen.”

If you love Omegaverse stories, you will love this book. The main character, Willow has a big heart and is just trying to survive the harsh world around her. Kaelen is a true morally grey man who would do ANYTHING for people in his circle. The side characters are great, looking forward to see who we explore in this series next!

One thing I love about Michelle is she jumps right into her story. You will not be sitting around tapping your fingers waiting for something to finally happen.

The spice level is a 4/5. This couple is insatiable!

Mind the trigger warnings if you need to, there are a few graphic scenes.

Mafia romance set in the omegaverse world.

Kaelen is the head of this mafia family and is an Alpha.

Willow is an omega being raised by an abusive dad and sick mom.

Kaelen essentially rescues her after her dad tries to sell her to him.

Drama. And all of the spice… lots of spice. Good read, would recommend.

As a first-time reader of the Omegaverse, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am officially obsessed! Michelle Love has created a dark, addictive world that perfectly blends gritty mafia stakes with intense, primal instincts.

The Characters:

The "Butcher of Boston": Kaelen Finnegan completely lives up to his name. He is a brutal, ruthless Alpha to the rest of the world, but his "touch her and die" energy when it comes to Willow is off the charts. Seeing that hard exterior crack specifically for his mate was so satisfying.

Willow: I absolutely loved Willow. Even though she’s in a vulnerable position as an Omega being used as a pawn, she has a quiet resilience and a backbone that I didn't expect. Watching her find her footing and her own power in Kaelen's dangerous world was one of the best parts of the story.

The Vibe:

The Alpha/Omega dynamic adds a layer of biological urgency to the romance that makes it feel so much more intense than a standard contemporary read. The chemistry is raw, high-heat, and kept me turning pages until 2:00 AM.

A Small Note for Fellow Newbies:

If I had one minor critique, it’s that the terms "Alpha" and "Omega" were used quite frequently in the dialogue and narration. As a newcomer, the labeling felt a bit redundant at times, but the plot and the characters were so compelling that it didn't stop me from devouring the book.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re looking for a dark romance with a possessive hero and a heroine you can truly root for, start here. I’m hoping there will be another installment to The Boston Sinners!

✨Kaelen

My first mafia dark romance AND omegaverse and I had a great time! Michelle created a place that I felt easy to understand and follow as a newbie to omegaverse. I’d always attributed them to be shifters but these are not, though still have animalistic attributes such as knotting, heats, scenting, and perfuming. I found the hierarchy of alpha, omega, and betas intriguing!

We follow a dual POV from our FMC, Willow, who has just been sold to the Butcher of Boston and alpha of the Irish mafia, and our MMC, Kaelen, who is said butcher and alpha. Willow has never experienced a positive relationship between an alpha and an omega, so when she drops into the hands of the most dangerous one in Boston, it’s a shock to learn that he not only rescued her from her abusive father, but also cherishes omegas & women. From here the beginning of a love that seems fated blooms… until they find out Willow has instead been gifted to the Italian mafia as his wife. Through their cunning, they hope to find freedom, but when Willow gets kidnapped… Kaelen no longer worries about starting a war between the mobs because he will burn the entire world down for his omega.

Kaelen is a soft for only her morally black MMC who is devoted almost instantly to healing and caring for Willow, who has been sheltered and abused alongside her ailing mother. Willow experiences lots of growth through these pages and goes from being the victim to her own hero. You get lots of yearning, spice, and murderously loyal found family. Oh! And animal rescue! I had a great time in this dark, medium stakes read.

Tropes you may find in Kaelen are alpha/omega society, forced proximity, forced marriage, bonds, high spice, knotting/heat, who did this to you?, only soft for her, nesting, praise kink, comfort, 🔥 the world for her, found family, and a HEA.

Thank you, Michelle, for this gifted arc. I enjoyed this first read by you and look forward to others!

I love dark mafia omegaverse. Love it. Will show up every time with a plate and zero shame. Breakfast, lunch, dinner… maybe dessert too. So yes, I was always going to read Kaelen.
This one is a fast burn… and I mean fast. Absolutely no slow circling or will-they-won’t-they... It’s instant connection, instant attraction, instant oh… so we’re doing THIS and sometimes that’s exactly what my mood-reader soul wants. Love, lust, devotion, possessiveness… all served up hot.
Kaelen is peeeeak alpha energy. Overprotective, wildly possessive, morally grey, and very much on team “absolutely no one touches her or ☠️” (my favorite trope everrr). But what really got me was how downright worshipful he is. The man is ruthless to the world but soft with Willow, and that combination is always so delicious to me.
And Willow!!! She surprised me. She’s been through real trauma and abuse, but she’s not meek or timid like you might expect from an omega. She’s fiery, gritty, opinionated… and I loved it. I also loved that Kaelen loved that about her. Is there anything hotter than a man who hypes a woman up instead of trying to tame her? I don’t think so. Science probably agrees.
Their chemistry was off the charts, the pacing flew by, and the vibes were exactly what I signed up for. Also… Kaelen is kinda dirty 😏 just saying.
If you’re in the mood for dark mafia power plays, a wounded omega with bite, and an alpha who would burn Boston to the ground without hesitation… this one is a good time!!

ARC review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Kaelen is a gritty, emotionally charged omegaverse romance that blends old-school mob power with fate, found safety, and a fierce sense of possession. From the very first page, the stakes are clear: Willow isn’t just overlooked—she’s been used. And watching her story shift from captivity to choice is deeply satisfying.

Willow is a wounded but resilient omega, and her love for broken animals mirrors her own quiet hope for healing. She doesn’t see herself as fragile—just tired of surviving. That makes her strength feel earned, not performative. Her scars, both visible and invisible, add weight to every decision she makes, and her longing for freedom is the emotional heartbeat of the book.

Kaelen is everything the title promises: ruthless, feared, and utterly commanding. But beneath the Butcher of Boston reputation is a man with a strict moral line—and the moment Willow is harmed, that line is crossed. His brand of protection is absolute, traditional, and unwavering. He doesn’t posture or hesitate. He claims, not as a cage, but as a shield. And that distinction matters.

The chemistry between them is immediate and fated, but the romance never overshadows the danger. Politics, mob power, and pack dynamics swirl around them, giving the story real tension and consequence. Kaelen’s vow—no one touches what is mine—isn’t just possessive bravado; it’s a promise backed by action.

If you love omegaverse romance with a powerful alpha hero, a wounded omega finding her voice, and a dark, protective love that feels both classic and cathartic, Kaelen delivers a compelling, heart-tugging read that leaves you believing in safety, strength, and the right kind of forever. 🖤🔥

Kaelen by Michelle Love
rating: 4/5 ⭐️
spice lvl: 3/5 🌶️

This was my first mafia dark romance AND my first omegaverse, and I had such a good time. Author Michelle Love does a great job laying out how this world works right at the beginning and as a newbie, I found it easy to follow and actually really intriguing.

Willow is sold by her abusive father to the Butcher of Boston — the Irish mafia’s Alpha, Kaelen. Not exactly a meet cute. Her father has treated her like property ever since she presented as an Omega, and offering her up for political leverage is just the final betrayal.
Kaelen is dangerous. Ruthless. Morally grey (morally black to everyone else, honestly). Long auburn hair, beard, head of the Irish Mob in Boston — peak alpha energy. Overprotective. Wildly possessive. Fully committed to the “no one touches her or ☠️” lifestyle, which happens to be my favorite trope.
But here’s what makes him elite: he could claim her immediately. His Alpha instincts are screaming at him to bond her. And he doesn’t. He refuses to take her agency. He chooses to woo her. To court her. To give her time. He does not want to be another Alpha who strips her of choice.
Consent-forward king behavior.

This is a fast burn — and I mean FAST. There’s no slow circling, no drawn-out will-they-won’t-they. It’s instant connection. Instant attraction. Instant “oh… we’re doing THIS.” And sometimes that is exactly what my mood-reader soul wants. Love, lust, devotion, possessiveness — served hot.
What I loved most is that beneath the spice (and yes, it is explicit), this book is about power dynamics. The author makes a strong point that in a bonded Alpha/Omega pair, the Omega holds power too — because an Alpha who loves their mate will do absolutely anything to protect and please them. And I mean anything. Hurt/comfort, caregiving, violence, war — all of it. The romance is the star in this book. Fill with deep devotion, burn-the-world energy, murderous loyal found family, feminine rage, trauma healing and yes — animal rescue and an adorable puppy.

Another green-flag-but-morally-grey, burn-the-world romance. Dark, hot, dramatic, and exactly what I signed up for!

Thank you to author, Michelle Love & Netgalley for providing me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my personal review.

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Overall, this book was satisfying, logical and easy to read. I enjoyed my time with this world, and built an acceptable connection to its characters.

Plot and development: this book started strong, and finished on a high. It remained consistent throughout, developing the storyline and building to the conclusion that im pretty sure everyone saw coming. But that’s not a bad thing, it wasn’t meant to be overly complicated, filled with complexities and twists. It was a very pleasant read and would definitely be suitable for those who are a fan of the omegaverse dynamics, with a light grey MMC.

Characters:
Our FMC, Willow, is a fiercely independent woman whose strength changes and develops throughout. I love that her character is consistent, and instead relies on personal growth throughout, rather than experiencing a personality shift. She begins to embrace who she is, which in tern compliments her foundation. A pleasant FMC within the omega-verse.
Our MMC, Kaelen, is very much the same regarding development and growth. He is consistent with his opinions and actions, but instead of doing a 180 whiplash when Willow enters, he instead embraces it and finds ways to incorporate her and their situation into his life. Another pleasant change when compared to other omega-verse MMCs.

The spice is pretty consistent from about the half way point, and it’s definitely spicy. But it’s good spice 🌶️🔥

The only reason I didn’t rank this higher is that I felt there was more it could have given. I wanted more story, more development and more involvement. Perhaps I just prefer a darker tone to my literature, but I felt this book had all the solid foundations to really delve into the darker side of omega-verse and mafia romances, but came away feeling more contemporary. But again, perhaps that’s just me and I read too much dark stuff 😂

I’d definitely recommend for those who are fans of the genre who want a solid book to dig into. It’s a solid one and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it. I’d like to read more of Michelle Love’s work, as her writing style is very approachable and pleasant!

If you love ruthless alphas who say “I’m a patient man” while clearly hanging on by a thread… Kaelen will absolutely ruin you in the best way!

🍯 “Anyone who thinks they can take you from me will out why I am called The Butcher of Boston.”

This story throws you straight into a gritty world of mob power and shady politics, where Willow, an omega treated like a political pawn, finds herself face to face with the feared Butcher of Boston.

🍯 “Some primal desire pulsed beneath the surface, my alpha already protective of the omega.”

What I loved most was how Willow’s journey unfolds slowly and realistically; she’s constantly wrestling with the push and pull between her omega instincts and her own autonomy after everything she’s survived. Her trauma isn’t magically fixed, and watching her carefully relearn what safety, trust, and choice look like made her growth feel incredibly powerful.

🍯 “This. This was what omegas talked about when they found their alphas. The passion. The intensity. The rightness.”

Meanwhile, Kaelen is ruthless to everyone else but unbelievably patient and sweet with Willow, and proves it by giving her the time and space to heal while quietly making it clear the world will burn before anyone hurts her again.

🍯 “I would wait at the end of the earth for her, just to burn it to the ground afterwards if those brilliant crystal eyes willed it.”

The tension, the yearning, the spice, the borderline feral chemistry between them… yeah, I was completely obsessed. I also loved how deeply the Irish culture was woven into the story, it made the world feel real and immersive instead of just sprinkled with Gaelic phrases.

And the side characters? The mob dynamics? The suspense and danger mixed in it? I’m spiraling, feral and desperate, because how does one survive life after Kaelen without falling apart completely?

Wow. As a fan of both Mafia romance and Omegaverse, Kaelen by Michelle Love delivered exactly what I was hoping for and more.

Kaelen by Michelle Love brings together brutal mafia politics and the raw power of a fated mate bond in a way that feels both consuming and emotional. From the very beginning, the power dynamics are clear, Kaelen Finnegan is not just any Alpha. He’s the head of the Irish mob in Boston, a man feared, respected, and completely in control of his empire. He’s calculated, ruthless when necessary, and used to people bending to his will.

Then Willow is brought into his world. Willow has spent her life being treated like a bargaining chip, used by her father in dangerous political and mafia dealings. As an Omega, she’s expected to be compliant and quiet but she’s far more resilient than anyone gives her credit for. She carries trauma, fear, and anger, yet she refuses to completely break. I loved that even in vulnerable moments, her strength shines through.

The mate bond between Kaelen and Willow adds a whole new layer of tension. Kaelen’s protective instincts are immediate and overwhelming. Once he realizes she is his, there’s no going back. He doesn’t just want her safe he wants her cherished, protected, claimed. And yet, the story doesn’t gloss over Willow’s hesitation. Trust isn’t instant. Healing isn’t simple. Watching their relationship evolve from a forced arrangement into something deeply emotional and consuming was one of the strongest aspects of the book.

The mafia backdrop keeps the danger constant, threats from rivals, power struggles, and the ever present risk that loving someone in Kaelen’s position makes them a target. That external pressure makes every tender moment between them feel even more meaningful.

The spice is well balanced with plot and character development. The intimacy feels driven by connection and instinct rather than overshadowing the story, and the chemistry between them is intense without feeling repetitive.

Overall, Kaelen is a gripping mix of dominance, devotion, danger, and healing. If you love possessive Alpha heroes, strong but wounded Omega heroines, political mafia drama, and a powerful fated mate romance, this one absolutely delivers.

Tropes:
Mafia romance
Omegaverse dynamics
Forced proximity
Arranged marriage
Touch her and 💀

As a fanfic veteran of many years, I’m no stranger to stories featuring the Alpha/Omega dynamic - and this one was a fun foray back into this trope! It does a great job at providing an easy to understand introduction to all things omegaverse so readers new to stories like these will feel well prepared for all the knotty situations ahead 🪢

If you love an over the top protective mafia MMC who will burn the world down for his girl but has a secret soft side reserved just for her (this man’s willingness to literally get on his knees for her?? 🫠) you’ll absolutely love Kaelen. Not to be overlooked, our FMC Willow has a fire that only grows throughout the book despite a traumatic upbringing and home life. The dynamic between these two is not only electric (the spice is definitely spicy 🔥) and often very sweet, but as their relationship progresses it also helps both characters heal in ways they didn’t expect.

There’s also a lovely found family element to this book that stretches beyond just one of our main characters - a lot of puzzle pieces that were assumed long missing end up found before the end 🥰 Many memorable side characters who I assume we’ll see more of in future books in this series.

Overall, Kaelen was an enjoyable read that hit on many of my favorite tropes. It gets off to a bit of a rushed start (though insta-love does make sense in an omegaverse situation), but finds its footing well by the time you hit the heart of the book and the real tension and yearning begin. Not quite as dark as much of what I usually reach for, but I’d definitely recommend jumping in with both feet if you’re a lover of mafia romance, omegaverse dynamics, possessive characters, banter, forced proximity, or “who did this to you” moments.

Thank you so much to NetGalley, Michelle Love and the publisher for the opportunity to enjoy and review this book with an eARC! All opinions are my own.

I was grateful to recieve this ARC from Netgalley!
The story follows Willow, an omega whose life has been shaped by control, fear, and survival. Her father treats her like a bargaining chip, ultimately offering her to Kaelen, a powerful mafia boss and alpha, to further his own interests. After the abuse she endured growing up, Willow’s wariness of Kaelen feels completely justified, and I really appreciated how the story took its time with her emotional adjustment rather than rushing her into trust. In real life, healing from abuse and learning to trust doesn’t happen fast.
Kaelen clearly recognises their mate bond almost immediately, and I loved the contrast between his certainty and Willow’s hesitation. While he has that classic dominant mafia alpha presence, there’s also restraint in how he respects and treats Willow throughout the book, until she feels safe with him, which made their dynamic more layered than I expected.
Willow’s omega instincts recognising him as her mate before she fully accepts it herself added a nice emotional tension throughout their early interactions.
I also hadn’t read omegaverse for quite some time and forgot how much I love the nesting rituals, which added another layer of vulnerability to Willow’s character, and actually made me like her even more than I already did.
The plot itself was engaging and easy to sink into, blending darker themes with softer moments between them. I thought their chemistry was one of the strongest parts of the book, intense, protective, and emotional while still maintaining a little of the slow burn feel that suited Willow’s character arc. Watching her gradually come into her own and feel safe was great to read, especially after all she suffered.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It delivered on the dark mafia omegaverse vibes while still keeping the relationship development front and centre. I’ll definitely be signing up to read the possible book being written for Sam, Torian, and Aidan, because I’m very curious to see where their stories go!

I was provided this book as an ARC in exchange for an good-faith honest review. First, I have to admit that while I have read quite a few books featuring paranormal type romances of all spice levels, this was my first venture into the Omegaverse genre. Even though I thought I knew what I was getting myself into, I in fact did not know what I was getting myself into.

⚠️Content Warning⚠️ very explicit open-door sexual content featuring power play, female heat, and knotting.

That being said, this books reads as if it were written by a first-time author, which is shocking considering Michelle Love has a few hundred published. I have not read any of her other books, but am now curious if this book was an exception to previous publishings.

Additionally, Kaelen lacked overall editing. There were obvious spelling, grammatical, and awkward word choice errors that should have been caught in editing and/or the re-write process.

The plot idea could have been good, but the character and story development were severely lacking. Instead of an actual story, it felt like the instant attraction, fated mates, touch her and die trope-supported story was in place only to loosely justify the explicit, repetitive, uncreative sex scenes. Just to be clear, those are some of my favorite romance tropes! And while I don't mind a good and spicy open-door romance, it needs to actually BE a romance, complete with relatable characters and at least a somewhat cohesive and believable plot. This was pure smut. Amature smut. Falsely packaged as an actual story.

I truly hate leaving such negative reviews, but as an avid reader, all reviews are helpful in deciding my next read. Also, it is entirely possible that the Omegaverse genre may not be for me. As stated above, this was my first exposure to the genre, so please take that into consideration if you are basing your interest in the book off my review.

🍯 green flag OTT/JP alpha

🍯 found family
🌼 trauma healing

Another devoted, burn-the-world, consent-is-sexy, green flag romance from Michelle Love. This one full of mafia violence, trauma healing, quite feminine rage, found family, and a love so hot it will set you ablaze.

Kaelen was a sexy broody violent Irish mafia boss whose entire life changed when omega Willow is brought to his office as payment for services her father needs. One whiff of Willow’s scent and Kaelen knows she’s it for him. Willow is a bit harder to convince, having suffered horrific abuse at the hands of her father and seeing how he twisted and warped the mate bond with her mother.

The bulk of this story is Kaelen and Willow falling in love. There is revenge on her father, and a kidnapping and rescue. There are plenty of intense moments that keep you on the edge of your seat. But the romance is the star, and it shines. Kaelen is the king of consent, and while he’s terrifying to everyone else, to Willow he is wrapped in green flags. Michelle Love does MMCs right, and Kaelen is no exception.

I liked Willow. A refreshing combination of gentle and fierce, she finds her own strength and has sass to back it up, but it also shy and submissive. I found her a good balance.

My only real complaint? Too much alpha and omega. I understand it’s an omegaverse story, but by the end I was mentally changing those terms to their names because it was taking me out of the story.

But otherwise? Another great work from Love. Her romances are epic, and literally define “burn the world”. Like her MCs don’t see anything but their mate and it’s swoon worthy.

Oh and the spice… praise kink and heat… and a lot of it. 😏 🔥 🥵

Solid 3.5 Stars. This was my first omegaverse read, and I have one immediate question: WHY has no one told me about nests?!

Right away, I appreciated how clearly the author explains the alpha/beta/omega dynamics at the beginning. As someone brand new to the subgenre, that made the world easy to step into without feeling lost. The setup is strong - damaged omega heroine, morally grey mafia alpha, arranged marriage stakes - all very much in my usual lane on paper.

What surprised me most is that the instalove element didn’t bother me as much as it normally would. Given the omegaverse bonding mechanics, it made sense within the world, and there is some initial resistance between the characters. That said, the emotional shift did turn softer faster than I personally prefer.

Around the midpoint, the tone became noticeably sweeter and more protective than dark. While the writing itself is solid, I found myself wanting more edge and morally grey tension. The repeated alpha/omega terminology also started to feel a bit heavy for my personal taste as the story progressed.

Interestingly, some of my favorite moments were actually outside the central romance - the mafia elements (action, captivity, rescue) and the MM side romance added layers that kept me engaged even when the main pairing leaned more tender than I typically gravitate toward.

Overall, this feels like a well-written, accessible omegaverse romance that will absolutely work for readers who enjoy protective alphas, strong emotional bonding, and sweeter high-heat dynamics. For me, it skewed a bit too soft and love-story-forward for my usual feral, morally grey preferences, but as a first omegaverse experience, it was a solid introduction to the subgenre.

I’m definitely intrigued enough by the concept (and yes… the nests) to explore more omegaverse in the future!

Kaelen by Michelle Love

Kaelen is a hot Alpha with long Auburn hair and a beard and I’m sold! He’s the head of the Irish Mob in Boston, and a dangerous man, but when he meets his fated Omega, Willow, she brings him to his knees. I also like that M, F are a character’s sex, but Alpha, Beta, and Omega are treated as their gender. Love outlines at the beginning of the book how this Omegaverse works, and I like that.
Willow’s father has treated her like an object since she presented as an Omega, but he goes beyond that when he offers her to Kaelen in exchange for political influence. Not exactly a meet cute, but Kaelen is determined to woo Willow rather than force her into a bond. He struggles with himself and his internal Alpha who wants to make her his right away. He doesn’t want to be another Alpha denying her agency. Because the book, in addition to being both very hot and a swoonworthy romance, is about power dynamics. The author made the point that between a bonded Alpha and Omega pair, the Omega actually has power because in order to please and protect them, an Alpha will do ANYTHING. The point is driven home that both Alpha and Omega designees are protective of those whom they consider to be their own, whether it be through hurt/comfort, physical caregiving, or even violent action.
Book is SAFE and LGBTQ+ FRIENDLY, although main relationship is M-F.
Heat is EXPLICIT.
TRIGGERS include abuse, animal cruelty, language in multiple languages, violence, and parental illness.
TROPES include Instalove, Fated Mates, Knotting, Nesting, Heat, Simply Mad About the Mob, Forced/Arranged Marriage, Strong Female Relationships, Captor/Captive, Dysfunctional Family FTW. And there’s an adorable puppy.

Kaelen was a fun read that mixes two of my favorite go-to genres: mafia romance and omegaverse 💕 Despite the premise, I would say it’s almost a cozy read, at least for 85% of the book.

Kaelen is an Irish mafia boss known as the Butcher of Boston. From the start he is strong, supportive presence, and because the book is dual POV, the reader is immediately acquainted with him and comfortable with his intentions.

Willow is fierce and skittish all at once. At times it was difficult to understand her reactions and her constant back and forth, but, there is a line at the very end of the book where she compares herself to an abused animal. I’m so glad that the author chose to leave in that line because it really made Willow’s personality click for me.

For the things I didn’t enjoy as much… The main antagonists of this novel came across as very flat in their motivations and their strategies. It felt disappointing to wonder and wonder about what these characters were planning, or what motivated them, only to find out that there wasn’t much to it. The main protagonists had kind of the opposite problem — because we knew their every thought from the get-go, and they both seemed to have an immediate understanding of each other, there was very little mystery or suspense to build a romance-driven plot.

Happy with the HEA ending for everyone who deserves one (including all the animals) and honestly really excited to hear if there will be some sequel novels for Willow’s friend Sam & the two boys asking her out, or even the woman who nabbed Willow in the bathroom (too much to ask for? Haha)

Thank you NetGalley & Michelle Love for the opportunity to read this early and give you my thoughts!

Kaelen by Michelle Love
⭐️ 3.5 stars

This was my first experience with the omegaverse genre, and I found Kaelen to be a fast-paced, engaging read with a satisfying conclusion.

What worked well:

The contrast between Kaelen’s fearsome reputation and his treatment of his mate was a highlight. The “Butcher of Boston” turning into a protective cinnamon roll added warmth and emotional payoff.

I appreciated the inclusion of secondary character development, which helped the world feel more populated and purposeful.

The story delivered a clear and rewarding resolution, which made the journey feel complete.

What didn’t work as well for me:

As a newer reader to the omegaverse genre, the frequent use of “Alpha” and “Omega” in dialogue took some adjustment for me and occasionally pulled me out of the story, though readers familiar with the genre may find it immersive.

While marketed as a mafia romance, the mafia elements felt more like background context than a driving force of the plot.

The romance leaned heavily into insta-love, which is understandable for fated mates but felt a bit rushed for my personal taste.

Overall:

Kaelen was a quick, entertaining read that omegaverse and dark romance readers are likely to enjoy, especially those who like softer heroes beneath intimidating exteriors. Readers should be aware of the extensive content warnings, including graphic violence, abuse (not between the MCs), kidnapping, forced mate bonds, and dubious consent.

Rcvd an ARC from the author for voluntarily giving a review.

We meet Omega, Willow, who is under the thumb of her politician father while her mother is sick. She remembers her parents love for one another when she was younger and now its as if she doesnt know her father. She is expected to act like the obedient daughter that her father wants. What she doesnt know is that her father is going to give her hand in marriage for help with his polictical campagne.
We meet Kaelen, mafia Alpha who runs a tight ship but family is everything to him. And when the spoiled policitian comes to him offering his daughter up for an alliance, he is beyond irrate especially when he sees the bruises on the omegas skin. His alpha is reacting to this omega wanting to make her his.
Willow cant believe that is happening. She is just left in the hands of this irish mafia alpha. He tells her that he will protect her but only if she stays bc once she leaves the house he cannot guarantee her safety. Willows omega wants this alpha and its an internal battle to keep her wits about her. But the more she gets to know Kaelen, she can see a differnet side to him than what the public knows.
Kaelen will do whatever it takes to keep Willow his and more importantly..safe. Especially when a rivial mafia claims that her father gave her to him first.
Drama, deceit, and passion make this a good read.

I have to admit I had no idea what an Omegaverse was before reading this book. I was very grateful the author included a brief explanation in the beginning of the book. Needless to say... I am hooked. Tie that in with the Irish Mafia, the Bravata, a corrupt politician and a love story?? Say less!! Kaelen grew up in a wonderful home with parents who absolutely loved each other until the day they died. He saw what a relationship was supposed to look like and craved it for himself but never believed he could ever find it...until Willow was thrust into his life. Her view of relationships was quite different from Kaelen's. Her dad changed over time no longer being the supportive, loving father and husband he was. Politics ruined him, creating an abusive, manipulating shell of an Alpha. Though Willow wanted a relationship, she was terrified of having one like the one she was witnessing between her mom and dad. Her trust was nonexistent. I don't want to reveal too much as this is a book you seriously have to read for yourself. I felt hints of underlying stories with some of the supporting characters in the book. I really hope the author decided to write more books in this series branching off into some of the stories of these other characters. Thank you so much for allowing me to read this ARC. I really really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more!

Kaelen was a quick and fairly accessible read for me with an interesting premise, though I personally would have liked to see more depth in certain areas.

The story reads quickly and was easy to finish in a short amount of time.

The plot wrapped up in a way that gave the journey a sense of closure. Readers who enjoy protective male leads with a softer side hidden beneath an intimidating exterior will likely appreciate Kaelen as a character.

I also had to get used to the frequent use of “Alpha” and “Omega” in the dialogue, which at times felt somewhat overwhelming. Readers who are more familiar with the omegaverse genre may find this more immersive.

Although the book is marketed as a mafia romance, the mafia aspect felt more like background context rather than a central driving force of the plot. The romance leaned strongly into the fated mates concept, which will likely appeal to readers who enjoy that trope. Personally, however, I would have liked to see more emotional and narrative development alongside the spicy elements.

Overall, Kaelen offers a quick and accessible reading experience that will likely appeal to fans of omegaverse and trope-driven romances. While I personally would have appreciated more depth in the story, readers who enjoy fated mates, protective heroes, and plenty of spice will probably still find this an entertaining read.

Dark mafia omegaverse!? Immediately, yes! Michelle Love, girl, you had me at the genre, then the tropes/blurb, but really sealed the deal at the dedication. This was definitely my kind of fun read, even with all the dark themes. I devoured the pages. Trust me when i tell you this was worth the read.

This Irish alpha mafia boss had me melting into a puddle of goo. Kaelen is the type of morally grey man you can't help but put your moral blinders on for. He's ruthless, but he is butter for his woman. He calls her "mo chroí" which means "my heart," and i about melted on the spot. Everything that came out of this mans mouth, both dirty and sweet, had me swooning.

I really like our FMC Willow. She wasn't just some mindless meek Omega damsel in distress. She was actually interesting, resilient, and feisty.

I loved the dynamic between Kaelen and Willow. I liked that their relationship built up emotionally and not only mindlessly physically, but when the spice was spicing, it was so HOT!

Tropes:
MF Omegaverse
Mafia
Arranged marriage
Both Possesive
Morally-gray
Kidnapping
Forced proximity

Boston Sinners book 1. This was an excellent debut omegaverse, and I can't wait to read more in this series.

When I learned Michelle was writing an omegaverse, mafia romance, I squealed and ran to her DMs. Despite my lunacy, she so kindly gave me the opportunity to ARC review this story.

This story follows Kaelen, known as the Butcher of Boston, head of the Irish mob, and Willow, omega daughter of a corrupt politician. Willow’s father attempts to sell her to Kaelen in exchange for help with his election campaign. Despite not wanting an omega, Kaelen feels a pull to Willow that he can’t ignore, so he takes her away from her horrible father. (That’s an extremely barebones summary of the story. Go read it to learn what happens!)

First of all, I am still wondering if there is a catalog that one can order a Kaelen from, because as far as book boyfriends go, he’s one of the absolute best. I am obsessed with him and the way he respects and treats Willow the entire story. He’s protective, possessive, and has a positively filthy mouth on him. Honestly, a win-win situation right there.

Willow is a BAMF. Going against everything her designation is supposed to make her - submissive, quiet, and a good broodmare - she is loud, opinionated, and refuses to accept her fate as a “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” kind of woman. And she’s met her match in Kaelen. What starts off as fighting constantly, turns into banter as foreplay as you move through the story. Willow is beautiful and independent, and Kaelen doesn’t want her any other way.

I loved this story! The main and secondary characters are phenomenally written. The villains are so villainous that you can’t help but to legitimately hate them. Well-paced and descriptive enough to feel immersed in the world, without being overburdened by superfluous imagery.

5 stars, 4 chili peppers! Do yourself a favor and go read this as soon as it becomes available. You really won’t regret it!

Overall the plot was great, classics dark mafia romance within the omegaverse. I loved reading about Willow and Kaelen’s relationship and how they grew together. Kaelen’s devotion to Willow is precious and truly is a love for the ages. The way he lets her lead so she is comfortable after coming from a life of abuse is admirable and purely adorable. Willow slowly coming to trust Kaelen and realizing what actual love is meant to feel like is so special.

However, the writing was hard for me to get through. It was tedious and repetitive. The mention of how tiny her hand was in his massive hand was said way too often, it was kind of giving y/n and her CEO. I struggled to get through this book because the pacing was off and there were so many subplots happening that just didn’t feel weaved together properly. The tone shift felt jarring in some places and overall I kept getting pulled out of the book and making sure my kindle hadn’t glitched because it felt like I’d read the scene already.

The plot was great, the character growth was wonderful and well developed, it the repetition and overall clunkiness of the writing made this book hard to get through. I am interested in book two because I do hope the couple teased in book one is who it focuses on and that seems like a fun read.

🌶️🌶️🌶️

Kaelen is the first Omegaverse book I’ve ever read and while I have read plenty of shifter romance/werewolf romance I didn’t realize the Omegaverse even existed so this was a pleasant surprise because I love big possessive men like Kaelen but only in my books. LOL.

I had a great time reading this book and I am excited for more from The Boston Sinners, I am absolutely going to need a book with Aidan and Torin but also Liam!!!

While I did enjoy reading this book, at times the writing felt a bit repetitive, especially towards the end. The stakes didn’t feel that high and a lot of the conflicts in the story felt too easily resolved. Especially for a mafia book. Other than that I feel like this was a really fun introduction into the Omegaverse and Kaelen and Willow were the CUTEST!
Fated mates, mate bonds and bites are my thing so this book absolutely scratched that itch for me and because of this book I will be seeking out more like it!!

If you’re a fan of steamy, fated mates romance, knotting and hot Irish Mafia bosses then this is the book for you! 🩸🖤🙌🏻

This book absolutely consumed me.

From the first few chapters, I knew I was in trouble—in the best way. Dark mafia? Omegaverse? Possessive alpha with a “touch her and die” mentality? Michelle Love delivered on every single promise and then some.

What really made this a 5-star read for me wasn’t just the intensity (and trust me, it’s intense). It was Willow.

Her vulnerability hit hard. The way she’s treated as a pawn by her father, the quiet resilience she carries, and the way she finds comfort in rescuing broken animals? That detail alone made me instantly connected to her. She isn’t just a fragile omega trope—she’s layered, wounded, and quietly strong.

And then there’s Kaelen.

I expected ruthless. I expected brutal. I did not expect the depth of his protectiveness to feel so earned. The shift from feared mob boss to the man who refuses to let anyone lay a hand on her? It worked for me completely. The moment he draws that line—when it becomes clear she is under his protection—gave me chills.

Their dynamic is everything I love in dark romance:

Forced proximity

Arranged/forced marriage

High-stakes power plays

Possessive alpha energy

“You’re mine” intensity

But beneath all of that, there’s something softer developing. The way Kaelen sees her. The way Willow slowly begins to feel safe. That emotional arc made the darker elements feel purposeful instead of just shocking.

The Boston underworld setting added tension without overshadowing the romance, and the pacing kept me hooked. I kept telling myself “just one more chapter”… and then suddenly it was 2 a.m.

If you love:
• Dark mafia romance
• Omegaverse with emotional depth
• Protective, deadly alpha heroes
• Broken heroine finding safety
• High spice with strong emotional payoff

This is absolutely worth picking up.

This was a full 5-star read for me. I could not get enough of Kaelen and Willow, and I’m already desperate for more in the Boston Sinners series.

This book very much did deliver. The mfc Willow was a fiery omega, had a rough life and didn’t want to settle or fall into the same traps as what’s she’s seen. So I loved the fierce fight back regardless of energy but also the beautiful kind nurturing side she shows throughout this book.

The mmc Kaelin was a mafia alpha boss, so your expectation is straight away badass, fierce, protective, authoritative and dangerous. We did get that and also a male who will bow down to his right omega female, little bit of a puppy with his tail wagging. I would have liked more mafia situations in this book, the plot was good but felt a little less outside of just these 2 becoming one inside the house, some more gunshots, fight, protective situations would have been a 5 star then for me.

The omegaverse was done exceptionally well, the nesting, knotting, purring, levels of authority. All well written and captivated me entirely. I still could not put this down and was throughly invested in everything and the main family/friend side characters. Cannot wait to hopefully read more of their stories.

I would happily recommend this to others to enjoy. Thanks for a great mafia omegaverse story and looking forward to more.

Landing at a fun 3 stars ⭐️

When you sign up for an omegaverse book, you’re usually here for a good time: a little cheese, a lot of knotting, and vibes over literary excellence — and on that front, this book delivered.

Our MMC was a broody Irishman who was obsessed with the FMC from the very start. Honestly, I don’t feel like much more needs to be said other than… he speaks to her in Gaelic. I’m not even an omega and yet I was somehow whining for him 🥵

The plot had so much potential. I really think this book could have benefited from some additional length to flesh things out, but as it stands, it did get the point across.

That said, since this is a review, I wouldn’t be doing it justice if I didn’t mention the writing and pacing. It felt a bit clunky and underdeveloped — almost rudimentary at times. It read a little like a draft rather than a fully polished final version.

But also… who reads an omegaverse book expecting fine literature? (If that’s you, please remove yourself from the chat.) When it really comes down to it, this book was fun and SPICY, and sometimes that’s enough.

Big thank you to NetGalley and Michelle Love for providing the ARC ✨📚
