""Syndrome X proactively lays out a nutritious, tasty, and simple diet plan to get us back to the basics of healthy nutrition.""-Lendon H. Smith, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of Feed Your Body Right
""Syndrome X is the best new book to help you understand the facts about nutrition, health, and aging. . . . It is full of new information and insights most readers have never had access to before. Everyone who values his or her health will want to read the book and then individualize the program to suit his or her needs-the authors have made this easier than ever to do.""-Richard A. Kunin, M.D., author of Mega-Nutrition
What is Syndrome X? It's a resistance to insulin-the hormone needed to burn food for energy-combined with high cholesterol or triglycerides, high blood pressure, or too much body fat. Syndrome X ages you prematurely and significantly increases your risk of heart disease, hypertension, obesity, eye disease, nervous system disorders, diabetes, Alzheimer's, cancer, and other age-related diseases.
Syndrome X is the first book to tell you how to fight the epidemic disorder that is derailing the health of nearly a third of North Americans. It outlines a complete three-step program-including easy-to-follow diets, light physical activity, and readily available vitamins and nutritional supplements-that will safeguard you against developing Syndrome X or reverse it if you already have it.
This lovely volume has a wealth of information. It discusses the fact that diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc., are not individual problems to be dealt with one by one, but that they are all related and should be treated as such. One of the points that I loved about this book was their emphasis on Nutritional Therapy instead of taking a million drugs. The discuss the pros and cons of many different diets and give ideas how to help reverse the symptoms of Syndrome X itself. There is a section at the back all about vitamin/herbal supplements, as well. While I am not one to take a lot of supplements (i believe that if you're eating lots of fresh food then you don't need to take supplements, as you're getting your vitamins naturally) I found the information about the different vitamins and what they do to be very interesting and helpful. I do wish there would have been a more comprehensive list of which foods actually contain the specific vitamins. I think that would have been more helpful than a list of where to buy specific supplements.
It was a great reminder of the REASONS why I want to change my food choices in the first place. Why do I want to give up chocolate again? Oh, yes. I don't want to have high cholesterol, heart attacks, heart disease, strokes, diabetes or cancer. These are reasons enough for me to have the willpower to give up things that I KNOW are bad for me. And when you try out this diet, you will find AMAZING benefits...well, at least I did.
My only problem with this book (aside from the supplement section) was purely linguistical. By about 2/3 of the way through the book, the wording became extremely repetitive. I know that's not something that should take away from the fantastic information found inside the pages, but for me personally, it became a little annoying. However, I won't let that stop me from using many of their suggestions and loving this book for what it is: A great life-changing book with the inspiration and ideas you can actually use to change your diet for the better for the rest of your life! A solid 4.5 stars for this very helpful nutrition book!
This book describes what Syndrome X is, and then gives detailed diet, exercise, and supplement recommendations to help reverse the condition. This is an excellent resource for anyone who has Syndrome X, but is also a great life prescription for anyone who desires to live a healthy life.
I really enjoyed this book because it dealt a lot more with the science and domino effect of hormones and chemical reactions in our bodies more than just "don't eat bread." The last few chapters I skimmed through because they dealt a lot with why certain vitamins are important and they're specific benefits, which I had just been to a mini-seminar on so redundant for me.
I also appreciated that, while there is a section that talks about what to eat/ what to avoid, with some simple suggestions, half the book was NOT recipes. I buy a book expecting to get a full book, not 20 pages and the rest recipes so this did not disappoint.
This book is a complete nutritional program to prevent and reverse insulin resistance, lose weight, clear mental fuzziness, increase energy. The main message is to basically eat less carbs/sweets and eat more protein.
I am not the one who read this book as I purchased it for, and had it sent to, a friend. He found it to be well-written with good information. It has helped him understand the relationship between diet and a pre-diabetic condition.
Syndrome X is a most comprehensive book. It is science-based and yet easy to understand. I am applying it now to take my diet and lifestyle to the next level.
