I received this book as a winner of one of those online scavenger hunts and unfortunately although the concept is good I just couldn't get into it enough to finish it although it isn't very long.

I read “Shardai (Cats of Catarau #1)” and loved it. So, I had very high expectations for this story and wasn’t disappointed! Makita died and was in a beautiful place but insisted on using a life to go back to her best friend, Bennie, the dog. He needed her was her only thought. I’m a huge fan of animals, especially cats, and Ms. Cox has a way of getting into a cat’s mind that makes me believe and root for them. A darker subject was introduced into this tale, a Pit Bull fighting-ring. My heart broke, thinking of all the pain and suffering these animals go through for greed and profit. Luckily the sadness balances out with the ingenuity of the animals, along with trust, and loyalty. It was a heartwarming story of a cat and her devotion to her animal family. If you love animals, especially cats and dogs, this novel is for you.

I was hooked as soon as I started reading this book. Cox wrote an interesting story about the love, determination and bonds between cats and dogs as well as between them and their human owners. It's a beautiful tale demonstrating the value of friendship, loyalty, love and the importance of ending a horrific type of animal cruelty, dog fighting.

From the beginning, I fell in love with Makita. She is the protagonist in this book. I felt her pain and fear throughout the story and enjoyed learning more about her relationship with her dog friend, Bennie. She is a protector, loyal to her animal friends. Makita is strong, smart and has a weak heart for her brother/friend dog, Bennie.

Cox's writing was descriptive from beginning to end. For example, she writes, "Terror and desperation hung in the air so thick Makita could taste it on her tongue." She nailed her imagery, especially when Makita and Bennie meet Jack, an old cocker spaniel, and travel through the forest together to help save the other animals. Cox painted a very vivid image of the forest and how these three animals felt going through the chilly, scary woods.

I can't express how unique the entire story is. I never read anything like this before and to be honest, wasn't even sure I would enjoy reading about cats and their thoughts and emotions. I seriously can't wait to read the next installment and will be sharing this series with all of my friends and family. It's a great book for people of all ages, especially those who have cats or dogs as pets.
