Wow, was this bad. It is not only that it makes no sense whatsoever, , or that characters behave in a way that makes no sense , it also is poorly written, relies on the, look, last chapter's page twist!, and on the unreliable main character: is he imagining things? (a trope that should be forbidden). That this won anything belies belief, as much as the short text praising the author, his writing style and the story that comes at the end of the book (it is pretty common in Japanese books to have a mixture of explanation/commentary written by another author, the translator...). It almost makes as little sense as the book.
Recycle.
The best: as with many modern novels, it is easy to read
The worst: it is one of those books whose characters make no sense and that seems to have been written by AI
Alternatives: read the shopping list, it will be more fun and thrilling
What’s so fab about it is that you know it’s impossible, but it’s so good that it doesn’t matter. Exciting and entertaining, definitely the most loved mystery of 2025 in Japan.
Kind of all over the place. Cultish creepiness meets genetics meets cheesy characters. Still an entertaining light read with gruesome kills and tons of "TUHTUHTUUUUUUH" plot twists.
