Veronica has worked hard to become a private investigator. Her first cases should be simple: a little surveillance, a couple of pictures, and get paid. The problems start with demonic dwarfs, impossible coins, vanishing furniture, a secret society, annoying telephones, and a kinky pony show. Oh, and the chance that she will lose her soul. The author G.W.Renshaw wrote recently on facebook

"I have now narrowed down the reader demographic of my first novel.

It officially appeals to women between the ages of 12 and 74."

Fortunately he subsequently admitted " ...several men have already read and enjoyed it" so, presumably somewhat unofficially, it is o.k. for me to have found the book both appealing and enjoyable.

The story weaves two threads together in a compact 250 page volume. The opening scene is of a radio interview with our heroin

This is not your mom's Nancy Drew book.

I read this book in one voracious chomp. The main character, Veronica Chandler is a young private eye, just setting up her investigations business. Unfortunately, her first two cases don't quite match the stuff she learned in her P.I. course. Between Dwarves, Aliens, and a possible demonic presence, the young P.I. has a hard time trying to keep reality screwed in right. The book is written in first person with a definite nod to the old Mickey Spillane, tre

A mixed bag of tricks with some intriguing surprises in it

This was an interesting one. I had some mixed feelings on it--I wish I could give it a 3.5.

Okay, so--the good stuff. Chandler's an interesting narrator, and there's a lot of cool stuff going on in the book. It's set in Canada, of course, and in Calgary--a very underused setting. There's a lot of great local details in it, and that was interesting to read. So, too, were all the details about police work; the setting and research were great

The initial impression I had of this book was that it was YA. However, after reading it, I found it went beyond that and is more appropriate for the late teens or early 20's readers as well as adults. It is a combination of a coming of age story and a paranormal mystery. The jumps from past to present were a bit problematic for me and I put the book aside each time one occusred. BUT that may just be my preferences at play. The writing is fluid and comfortable to read and the coming of age story ...more

The first installment of a Veronica Mars-esque Canadian mystery series, this book combines magic and crime investigation against the backdrop Canadian city, Calgary, Alberta. A very disturbing look at sexual exploitation, pony play and other seamy underbellies of society- strong subject matter for a teen detective, but Renshaw thrusts his young characters relentlessly into the fray and out the other side.

This was an entertaining book by G.w. Renshaw. The story kept me turning the pages and I enjoyed the quirky humour (please note the Canadian spelling here - wink wink). My only peeve is that Veronica's parents are too perfect and wonderful(found them a bit nauseating - sorry...) and Veronica also comes across as too perfect despite her obvious flaws. Enjoyable premise and I will check out book 2 when it is out.

This is not your average teen-sleuth novel! Pony play and inexplicable demons populate Renshaw's world of teen sleuth Veronica Chandler! I'll be watching to see what her next adventure beings.
