“More than any individual author, Richard Powers showed the public that science fiction could be written by intelligent adults, for intelligent adults. His superior aesthetics...still overshadow most rivals....I am delighted his talent is again on splendid display!”— Michael Moorcock . “I am happy to see this collection of outstanding work.”— Sir Arthur C. Clarke. “Enlightening....Valuable.... Capable of evoking that fabled sense of wonder.”— SFRA Review.
One of my all-time favorite science fiction artists, and a great artist period. This book contains many of his greatest works, laid out in a chronological biographical manner. Also has an appendix which contains interviews from Playboy and other varied sources.
Wonderful collection of Powers works, great to see such a unique and inspiring artist honored. Would be great if more artists from this era were to get this same treatment.
As an illustrator myself, I have always found Powers' work to be at once enigmatic and seductive. I wish I could paint like him, but my mind doesn't work that way. However, that doesn't prevent me from admiring his work and finding it stimulating. I could study it for hours. In fact, I have. This volume also has biographical material from his son and excerpts from an informal interview. Turns out also that Powers was a literate and witty writer as well as a brilliant artist. This is a book that I will return to over and over for inspiration and for sheer enjoyment.
