Royal Summer: A Lively Summer Romance for Teens with Castles and Princes

3.5 stars rounded up. I’m not totally sure why, but I can feel the summer vibes radiating in this.
There isn’t any one thing that really screams “summer!” in here, but somehow, I get it.
I read this in October. Summer has just passed, and yet… this made me want for one of those warm rainy days.
Royal romance is something I usually enjoy. So, I was pretty excited about this one.
It isn’t super different from some of the others that I have read, and it has a lot of the typical plot points that can be found in those.
Things like struggling with family approval, the “heartbreaker prince” persona, etc.
So, if you like that sort of thing, you will probably like this.
This is a fast-paced, and very quick read at only 288 pages. I think it’s good if you want to read something light.
I will say that I think the sort length means sacrificing a little bit of the connection with the characters though, because there isn’t a ton of depth or buildup.
I did like the little romantic moments that Finn and Hannah had together though, and I loved the banter.
In books, I always find it so entertaining when someone is joking around or inquiring about a bunch of random American stuff. This has that, so it brought some humor in for me.
Case and point: Wisconsin cheese hats.
Random notes:
- COWS! The Scottish ones. I love them so much, and they get a little mention in here.
- Horse scenes. I am obsessed with scenes where the love interest is teaching the other person how to do something, or helping them overcome a fear. I think that is so cute.
- Jane Austen references. I know a lot of people are into that, so I thought it was a worthy mention.
- I love the cover.
It’s a good story overall, though I did want to feel a bit more connection to the characters individually and together. But, it was fun to read and was written well.

Aí o meu coração não aguenta estes romances!!!
Que coisa fofa! Adorei adorei adorei
É realmente um romance extra cute para ler no verão, com calor, pouca roupa e na rua na hora do calor☀️
Gostei da narrativa, do enredo. Quem nunca quis namorar com um príncipe?? Eu já! Gostei bastante da escrita mesmo natural, é o primeiro livro que leio desta autora e deixou-me com vontade de ler mais, do carisma das personagens!
Amei de paixão a Hannah Americana, provou que quando não fecham uma janela, pode abrir-se uma porta e não devemos duvidar e ter medo. Devemos atirar de cabeça, ir sem receios!
O Finn… que homem! E dizem que o amor não “cura” as pessoas? Um mulherengo que passou a ser extremamente fiel! Amamos🫶🏻 um fofo com a Hannah e desafiou (mesmo que já tenha o seu histórico) o que é “correto” para seguir o que queira e ter a pessoa que ama ao seu lado.
Amo-os basicamente!
A carência foi a mil agora, mas está tudo bem. Provavelmente a minha próxima leitura vai ser um thriller🙃
Só mudava uma coisa neste livro: colocava alguns capítulos no pov do Finn porque eu ia gostar mesmo de ver o que ele estava a sentir e ver ele apaixonar-se pela Hannah.
Conclusão desta leitura: Quero um príncipe que me leve a andar de helicóptero e me diga que me ama😭💓

This book was a disaster. There were so many things that were wrong and made the whole reading experience cringe and awkward.
First of all it seems to me that the American author has never been to Scotland really:
- The sunset in Scotland in the summer is not at 5pm like inplied in the book. It’s more like 9pm/10pm.
- You can’t plan to go and see an aurora borealis in Scotland, especially in the summer where it’s barely dark enough until very late. Aurora’s here in Scotland are very much a last minute thing to see, not something you would plan the day before.
- You wouldn’t use Scottish Slang as an American after two hours in Scotland. No tourist would say “eejit” so quickly.
- There are no bank holidays in Scotland between May and August so the whole bank holidays plot line does not work.
-Highland games in East Lothian (not a thing)
Next on is the main female character who is so annoying, winning all the time, obnoxious, rude. I didn’t like her at all and hates her character which made the whole book painful to read.
Do we need to read the word “American” every two minutes?? Like we get it, the MFC is American, no need to go on and on about it.
Can we also talk about how the Prince of the UK who is next in line for the throne can go to a pub without security, without paparazzis in the middle of Edinburgh??
There’s also inconsistencies like for example the Prince gets a text at like 10pm then disappears off in the middle of kisisng her. The next day he says he had to go because he got summoned to the airport where the royal family were landing. The royal family only arrived at the castle the following evening at like 6pm. So it either took them 20 hours to drive a 1h car journey or the author doesn’t know hos to use google maps.
A young adult book that talks about climaxing and sex so much especially when the two main characters haven’t even had sex together.
There was no chemistry at all. Everything felt forced and it was painful to read. The ending was rushed, the whole book was rushed and poorly written.
It’s such a shame because I loved The 100, but this book clearly is disappointing.

If you’ve ever dreamt of falling for a Prince, then this sweet summer romance is for you.
Hannah lives in Milwaukee, she’s just finished high school and has been betrayed by her best friend and boyfriend. She’s heartbroken but then she gets the opportunity of a lifetime to work as a PA for her favourite author and escape to Edinburgh for the summer. As an aspiring writer this is her dream come true, until it all falls through the day after she arrives. Stranded in another country with no job or place to stay, a ‘rapscallion’ she met the night before swoops in and offers her a job and place to stay at Inveresk Castle. He’s flirty and cheeky but she’s keeping him at bay as she’s sworn off relationships and she can’t help but think he’s keeping something from her. Then on her first day of her new job she finds out he’s actually the Prince of England and she couldn’t be more embarrassed.
I really liked her Hannah, she had a great sense of humour, very relatable and I loved that she was a writer. I loved her character growth too, how she dealt with her parents and Gigi at the end was very compassionate and mature. Finn, definitely gave me Prince Harry vibes, with his drunken antics and American love. I loved him and would very much like my own Prince please. There are some really great supporting characters too, I loved Caro! She was so fun and had great energy. I’d love to go on a night out with Finn’s friends too.
This was such a fun, lighthearted easy read. I devoured it in two sittings. I loved the surprise Prince, royal drama and secret relationship. The connection between Hannah and Finn was instant and I loved the sparks between them.
Overall, this was 4⭐️ for me and I can’t wait to read more of the author’s work. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a fun summer romance.

I enjoyed this YA/new adult summer romance that has an aspiring teen writer learning to pivot when her internship with her favorite Scottish author falls apart. Unbeknownst to her, she befriends a British prince and finds herself working in his family's Scottish castle for the summer. Slowly the two become friends, then something more until the pressure of the press comes between them. Great on audio and PERFECT for fans of The prince and me movie (one of my all time favs!). Hannah is adorably clueless about Scotland and I loved getting to experience it alongside her. She reminds me a little of myself - occasionally impulsive, passionate, creative, and stubborn to a fault. We saw some great development in her, seeing her grow from a stereotypical American to someone who cherishes the part of the world she is in. At times, I would’ve loved to see her be more open to the opportunities and the people around her. She held back a fair amount which felt a little odd for her character. But otherwise, I think Morgan did a great job creating Hannah.
I love seeing a “bad boy” actually possess a heart of gold. Finn is a great character and I always looked forward to seeing him emerge. The focus on how his image is skewed and, because of his position his lack of humanity, was a big plus for me. Everyone does questionable things when they experience heartbreak or grief. Finn is just in the incredibly unfortunate position that everything in his life is plastered in newspapers for public consumption. Seeing him savour the quiet moments with Hannah endeared him to me more and more as the book went on. I wish we could have had chapters from his perspective. I think that would have elevated the story even more.
This was one of the books my wonderful boyfriend bought me when he gave me free rein in Waterstones. The cover and the premise intrigued me as I love a forced proximity situation so was very eager to see what would happen. I really enjoyed this book. From start to finish, I found myself engaged in the story and grinning at these two worlds coming together. I loved that it played on the American vs British theme but didn’t go crazy on it - enough for the comedic effect before then focusing on what was going on in the moment. Character wise, we get to see a lot of faces that all help the story progress, even in the little ways. It was a lot of fun watching Hannah settle into Scotland and seeing her try to adjust to how everyone spoke and acted! The romance was very good, building a brilliant friendship that then evolved. As much as I loved the banter, I would have enjoyed more of it! The balance between attraction and having fun was well kept but I wanted a little more oomph to it. We do only get one spicy scene as well and it was well written but another one or having this more detailed would have been perfection. The ending was incredibly sweet, bringing the story to a close in a very lovely way. Considering where we end up, a little more explanation would have been helpful but overall, a really nice ending!
Overall, Royal Summer is a fabulous quick romance read that’s perfect for Summer.

If you like the Hallmark movies, especially those which there's a common girl who travels to another country because she met the future king and he needs her help in something - then you will probably like this book!

I really disliked Gigi, still do; and even tho I wasn't the biggest fan of Finn's in the beginning, I can proudly say now that I really love him - as well as Hannah!

This was a cute summer romance read. I enjoyed following Hannah in this story as her summer plans in Scotland fell through and as she ended up working at a royal gift shop instead. I loved the entire cast of characters as well as the banter between Hannah and Finn. I do wish we could have seen their relationship develop a bit more, but overall it was a great royal romance.

Brace yourself for a very brutally honest review. I did not enjoy this book, it felt like reading a wattpad novel (and was certainly as filthy as one). Now there were aspects of the story I enjoyed, I love a good normie and royal romance. I think my main problem with this one was the writing and pacing. Some things felt like they happened for no reason, and I didn’t really jive with that. I will say I loved Hannah and Finn, but the world they were in was poorly written. This is probably someone’s jam, but it’s certainly not mine.

I’m so grateful to have received complimentary audiobook access from Harper Audio via NetGalley-s it’s always a treat to get an early listen, even when it ends up being a bit of a mixed bag.
If you can suspend disbelief for a spell, this is a cute, charming, and lightly spicy YA romance that makes for a fun escape… but I’m going to gently suggest skipping the audiobook format for this one if you have the choice.
Let’s start there, because the narration really impacted my experience. It’s primarily narrated by Siho Ellsmore, with the epilogue by Stewart Crank, and unfortunately Ellsmore’s performance didn’t quite land for me. While pacing can easily be adjusted with playback speed, the inconsistency in accents was much harder to overlook. The FMC,who is (if I remember correctly) from Wisconsin, doesn’t sound remotely Midwestern. Instead, her voice drifts between what feels like New York and Boston influences, sometimes harsher, sometimes disappearing altogether.
It becomes even more noticeable given that the story is set in Edinburgh. Characters who should have distinct Scottish accents do have them… but not consistently. The delivery slips between styles, occasionally blending accents in a way that pulled me completely out of the story. By the end, the only real consistency was the inconsistency, and it made it difficult to stay immersed.
That said—back to the story itself. At its core, this is an endearing, wish-fulfillment romance: the kind of fairytale where an ordinary girl finds herself entangled with royalty. It leans heavily into that fantasy, and while some suspension of disbelief is expected in this subgenre, there are definitely moments that push the boundary of plausibility—especially early on with how she manages to remain in Scotland.
Still, there’s a sweetness to it that’s hard to deny. It’s cozy, a little whimsical, and the Highland cow references? Absolutely doing some heavy lifting in the charm department.
Overall, this is a solid pick for YA readers who love royal romances and want something escapist and swoony—as long as you’re willing to roll with the fantasy and maybe opt for the physical or ebook instead of the audio if you have the choice.

I devoured this book! Truly what isn’t to love about a cute romance between an American girl and a British prince in Scotland over a summer? Reading this book really felt like I was watching a 2010s teen rom com in the best way possible. It was trope-y (/pos) and I really loved every single character. Finn was so sweet with Hannah (“my American Hannah” mhm!!) and the relationship development between them really hit the spot. I’m such a sucker for strangers to friends to lovers. It wasn’t the slowest of slow burns but was so satisfying nonetheless. My only complaint is that I wish we got to see more of Hannah and Finn after they finally ended up together. Definitely would recommend if you’re looking for a fast-paced, lighthearted romance to curl up with!

I’ve been in a slump for a few months on this book did pull me out of it. I was in fact kicking my feet and giggling. I was in need of a simple easy read. The side characters were fun and lovable. That being said, there are quite a few negative.
The nicknames in this book are “American Hannah” and “Rapscallion”. So there’s that. Also here’s a direct quote. “Look, the sky’s constipated”‼️It mentions TikTok and girl dinner ‼️ I’m not a fan of writing that includes parenthesis to add something instead of just outright saying it, and this book has a lot of that. When Hannah's summer gig gets unceremoniously canceled, she is saved by none other than the Prince of England, who conveniently sets her up with a summer gig and an adorable cottage at his family's summer castle in Inveresk. What follows is an adorable summer romance that blossoms amid their shared heartbreak and family expectations.
Morgan writes an excellent romance--I loved the relationship that naturally evolved between Finn and Hannah after their first chemistry-filled meeting. It was Austen coded (from the very first line). Riding on horseback. Taking a dip in the pond. Bad first impressions. Getting lost in the rain. Adorable.
This book is decidedly not YA. Yes, the main character is eighteen, but the romantic scenes and events would be more appropriately marketed as new adult (but who knows if this is a "real" genre in the publishing industry!). The writing style felt YA, but the content did not, which caused a little bit of a disconnect for me at times. The main character felt like she should be twenty-five instead of eighteen (with very few exceptions). It felt strange to me that an eighteen-year-old, recent high school graduate would have enough qualifications to score a job with an established author, no matter how ridiculous that job (and that writer) was. The conflict did, however, feel a little more YA, but not in a great way. Beatrice's role (Finn's ex-girlfriend) in the story pit girl against girl, which felt icky. And the fight with Hannah's best friend, Gigi, felt unnecessary and didn't have to be the inciting incident sending her abroad. It could have been just as believable that she wanted an opportunity to get away from her parents and have an adventure before starting college.
I read this in mostly one sitting happily. If Morgan decides to write more purely romance novels, I'll be reading them!

This started off so good. The banter was witty and addictive, the forced proximity was perfect and the prince x commoner aspect was so good but then it took a massive nose dive when Beatrice popped up again.
I love me some other women drama when the other woman is an ex who the mmc clearly does not want to take back. However, the way the mmc reacts to how the ex interjects herselfs into the current relationship has to be done well and it wasn’t in this book. Finn just lets Beatrice walk all over him and Hannah and I hated that.
Also, the fact that the fmc Hannah ended up kinda forgiving and leaving the door open to full forgiveness and a restart to her friendship with her ex best friend who slept with her boyfriend for the better part of a year just annoyed me to no end. Sometimes there are going to be people who forever play the villain in your life because of the very awful thing that they do to you and in this case Hannah’s ex best friend who she had been best friends with since kindergarten sleeping with her boyfriend for almost an entire year counts as an awful thing that the best friend can never come back from. That’s a level of betrayal that should warrant an immediate and complete cut off for the rest of forever. When that level of trust is broken a friendship of any kind can’t take place anymore because why would anyone want to be friends let alone best friends with somone that they constantly have to watch their back with. Hannah didn’t need to open that door again with the ex bestfriend to be able to let it go and put that situation behind her. Closure with a situation doesn’t have to mean forgiven, it can simply mean accepting that it happened and making peace with the unchangeable actions but not with the actual people themselves.

Most of this book reads pretty YA, but in certain places, it gets a little spicier than I would have expected.
I did enjoy the characters, although my disbelief needed to be suspended a few times (particularly with the horse scenes.)
And the ending was stressful, but ultimately satisfying.
Recommended for a quick, cute read.

🇬🇧 I really wanted to love this book.
After all, who hasn’t dreamed of falling in love with a prince? I grew up with The Princess Diaries and The Prince & Me, so a royal romance set in Scotland sounded like the perfect comfort read.
Unfortunately, it didn’t quite live up to its premise.
My biggest issue was the lack of depth. I never felt like I truly knew the characters. Hannah exists more as someone who moves the plot forward than as a fully developed person with clear dreams, fears or motivations. Finn isn’t much different: we’re constantly reminded that he carries emotional baggage, yet the story never takes the time to explore it in a meaningful way.
The romance also didn’t work for me. I’m not the target audience for insta-love, but even setting that aside, their relationship felt incredibly superficial. They rarely have meaningful conversations about the experiences that shaped them, so I never believed in their emotional connection. Instead, much of their chemistry relies on rather immature banter and a surprisingly high number of steamy scenes that felt out of sync with the characters’ emotional maturity.
Another disappointment was how many subplots were introduced only to be rushed, underdeveloped or simply forgotten. I wasn’t expecting an intricate plot, but I did expect the story to follow through on the threads it introduced.
The writing itself is simple, accessible and clearly aimed at a younger audience, making it a quick read. I also genuinely enjoyed the Scottish setting—it had so much potential to create a charming, fairy-tale atmosphere. Sadly, that aspect wasn’t explored nearly enough either.
In the end, this felt like a story with a lovely premise but not enough room to breathe. With stronger character development, more emotional depth and greater attention to its subplots, it could have been a much more memorable read.
Not a terrible book—just one that left me wishing it had aimed a little higher.

Now, the royal content of my usual choice of book features anything from morally grey princes and life threatening battles, to FMCs with hidden lineage and a worrying amount of swords. But sometimes you just need a fun, sweet summer romance about an American girl who falls in love with a prince; sometimes, the drama you need is about whether you should have trusted your high school boyfriend (tip: you shouldn't) and whether the horse you're about to mount is going to become your best friend or gallop off into the sunset, dragging you behind her by your ankles (she's not- Rosie is a sweetheart and must be protected at all costs). SOMETIMES the drama you NEED is a playboy prince with a cheeky smile, a whole lot of banter and a HUGE (get your mind out of the gutter) lack of respect for royal tradition. And that's exactly what you get with Royal Summer. It is such a fun, cute, feet-kicking romance. It is basically the book equivalent of sitting in the sunshine with an iced coffee and pretending your biggest problem is which royal event you’re attending next. Is it very vanilla? Yes. But vanilla just so happens to be my favourite ice cream flavour (okay, actually it's cherry vanilla, but you get the gist) and sometimes, I don't want to have my heart ripped out only to be left staring at the wall for hours afterwards. Sometimes, I want a modern fairytale tied up neatly with a ribbon that tells me everything is going to be okay. Cute, fun, carefree, and comforting - if you need that sometimes, too, Royal Summer is the perfect park, poolside, or beach read.

I did not ready the synopsis before listening to this book. The only thing I saw was that it was a summer book and I need to more of those before this summer season is over. This story takes place in Scotland, where Hannah is taking a job for her favorite author. After the author moves to a different country, Hannah meets a prince that offers her a job and changes the course of her adventure.

Even though the characters and the country exploration were lovely, the romance of the book was really flat. They fell into love very quickly, after Hannah explicitly said she wouldn't fall for a flirt or player like Finn. To me, you would have to work for a long time to change someone's opinion of you and Hannah's changed really fast.

I wished more of the side characters got to interact with Hannah as well because they were interesting. I would have also liked to have gotten an update on that author from the beginning. It would have been funny if it turned out the guy she moved for was a fake. Something like that would have tied the story up perfectly.

I did not ready the synopsis before listening to this book. The only thing I saw was that it was a summer book and I need to more of those before this summer season is over. This story takes place in Scotland, where Hannah is taking a job for her favorite author. After the author moves to a different country, Hannah meets a prince that offers her a job and changes the course of her adventure.

Even though the characters and the country exploration were lovely, the romance of the book was really flat. They fell into love very quickly, after Hannah explicitly said she wouldn't fall for a flirt or player like Finn. To me, you would have to work for a long time to change someone's opinion of you and Hannah's changed really fast.

I wished more of the side characters got to interact with Hannah as well because they were interesting. I would have also liked to have gotten an update on that author from the beginning. It would have been funny if it turned out the guy she moved for was a fake. Something like that would have tied the story up perfectly.

Overall, this was a good summer book. There were good elements like the characters and exploring Scotland, but some areas that needed work. For example, the romance could have been developed longer, and we could have gotten more side character interactions.

This was a super cute, YA, summer romcom! I really loved the narrators & how they really brought the story to life. tbh though, if I had to eyeball it, idk if I would’ve finished. it was a quick, easy, lighthearted listen & a cute romcom for summer for sure! but the audiobook I feel like is the way to go. I love how Finn calls her “my American Hannah,” it’s so swoony & I love how they got to know each other and became good friends before exploring a relationship, even though their chemistry was off the charts!
There were a lot of things I really liked: Finn was swoon-worthy, I loved the whole “surprise, he’s a royal prince” aspect, & I loved how lighthearted & sweet this audiobook was. The only thing I didn’t care for was the miscommunication. I’m not a hater of miscommunication if it’s done well, but this just kinda came out of nowhere for the sake of a third act breakup.
Overall, it was a cute listen & perfect for a YA summer romcom on audio. I finished it in less than 24 hours because I just really enjoyed it!

This book was refreshing, funny, romantic, and an overall good palette cleanser to some of the heavier reads I’ve recently digested.
Hannah wasn’t my favorite FMC by any means, she had some odd moments that made me cringe and step away from the book, but she also had qualities I loved—her passion for writing, her learned boldness and confidence, and her compassion towards others made her a compelling protagonist.
I did love Finn as the MMC. The wit and charm he brought was perfect for a YA Royal contemporary romance. His devotion to Hannah made him extra swoonable.
I loved the cast of side characters but I felt a lot of them had so much more opportunity to provide to the story. Especially Beatrice, Dean, and Hannah’s parents. I think this book could have benefitted from a few more chapters fleshing out a bit more of their roles in the story.
Very glad to have read it, very grateful to have gotten an ARC.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a light romance, easy to read and pretty short. I finished it in a day. It’s perfect for summer too. The vibes are very lush and it’s a type of Cinderella story. American girl goes to Scotland for the summer after experiencing heartbreak and falls for the prince. A common trope in fiction. What girl doesn’t want to fall in love with a prince?
My only complaints are that I didn’t really like how often Finn was making jokes with sexual intent. And when we did get spice, I didn’t enjoy how it was written (even though it was very very short). Especially because the cover seems it was designed to attract teenagers so I thought it would be YA.

This was the cutest summer romance read. I loved the Hallmark movie vibes it gave me while reading it. It was one of those breezy, easy to read, feel good stories. The banter between Hannah and Finn was super adorable. If you are looking for a cozy and swoonworthy read for the summer pick this one up immediately.

This book was so cute!!!! Had it not been for the 2 slightly spicy scenes, it would have been 5 stars. I loved every character from the start and continued to love them as the story went on. I love Hannah and Fin, they were so cute together and I am definitely hoping for a sequel. I would love to read more about Hannah’s writing and how she handles being around the royal family, along with Finn becoming more prevalent to the country and learning how to rule properly. The ending was so sweet and the author handled the conflict well and as realistically as you can when you’re writing about royalty. I would definitely recommend this and if you want to read it but skip over the 2 scenes mentioned earlier these are the page numbers. Pages 189-192 and 227-231. It doesn’t get too explicit but it’s also not a fade to black scene. 4/5 ⭐️

I enjoyed this book to an extent. I felt a lack of connection to the characters and the story, as the book was so fast-paced and generally shorter than what I am used to reading.
Don’t let that deter you from reading this book, though, especially if you like fast-paced and relatively short books; this one’s for you.

absolutely love a romcom and this hit all
the spots. The banter between the main characters Finn and Hannah is brilliant. I loved getting to know all the characters. If you love forced proximity, found family and romcom. This one is for you. Brilliant storyline and could not put it down. Will be keeping my eye out for this author again. Perfect summer read.

I bought this book for my 13 year old daughter in the YA section of the cutest bookstore ever (@Mariasbookshop) in downtown Durango Colorado.
She started this book and then got distracted by one of those preteen apps and stopped about 50 pages in. I wanted to read it and knowing it’d take her forever to get back to it, I picked it up. And let me tell you!!!! Thank Goddess that I did because hello too much spice for a middle schooler.
Can we develop like a rating system for level of spice in YA? This wasn’t what I would label smut but it has way more details of intimacy than I think is comfortable or necessary for most YA readers.
That aside, it was a fun super quick read. Perfect for by the pool this summer. Not a literary masterpiece but a fun way to get lost in someone else’s story.
Just be mindful! You do you as far as parenting but I would say this is not appropriate for anyone under 16.

4 stars, it’s a cute story with some fun characters.
It gives Lizzie McGuire movie vibes, which I love. It was just hard to relate to the FMC. It is a Young Adult/ New Adult so that is probably why we don’t relate. Overall, a good story with some royalty added in, which never hurts. It is prefect for a summer, beach read.
