This book has only recently been translated into English and published in the United States by Other Press of New York. It is five years old already, not that it particularly matters. In fact, one could argue it has come out at precisely the right time. The Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci was born in 1929 and lived her life uncompromisingly, doing what she wanted, where she wanted, when she wanted. She hated the way women were treated but she did not hate men. She loved men, and she was loved ...more

“Sono troppo rissosa, aggressiva, non perdono mai. Non so perdonare. Mai! Non so dimenticare. Mai! Questo è molto brutto. E a volte mi piace vendicarmi. Her history begins with the cover portrait - ever present cigarette in hand, she looks straight at the viewer, and you know you can't lie to her. Oriana Fallaci's early years were defined by World War II, and her diminutive size and braids made her look even younger than her 14 years as she peddled her bike behind partisan lines delivering messages woven into her plaits and grenades in hollowed out cabbages. The woman who developed was uncompromising, fearless. She was called not “the most turbu ...more

“Oriana Fallaci: The Journalist, the Agitator, the Legend”, by Cristina de Stefano, translated from the Italian by Marina Harss (Other Press, 2017. First published in Italian as “Oriana, una donna”, Rizzoli, 2013), is a fast-pacing account of Oriana Fallaci’s tumultuous life.

The controversial Italian journalist and novelist was born in Florence, in 1929. Despite being poor, her parents were avid readers, and Oriana grew up surrounded by books. Her father, Edoardo Fallaci, made his living as a wo

Ne

Long before there was Christiane Amanpour, Arwa Damon, Marie Colvin, Christopher Hitchens, and Hunter Thompson’s Gonzo journalism, there was the Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci. In the 1950s she had broken through the mysogynistic newsrooms in Italy by writing about whatever she was assigned, and with great determination worked her way into reporting serious subjects of her own choosing. Fearless, aggressive and assertive, unrelenting and incapable of being deflected, she fought for and got as ...more

ORIANA UNA DONNA
Oriana è sempre Oriana. Straordinaria come donna, come giornalista, inviata e scrittrice.

What a life. What a story. Compulsively readable. The brevity contains volumes. The author's respect and affection for her subject does not distort her view. Fallaci's faults are legion and they are well represented here. Fallaci's supposed Islamophobia is addressed directly. Her criticism of religious extremism knows no denominational bounds. She is adamantly antifascist, anti-theocratic, and pro-woman. And as a New Yorker in the 21st century she took 9/11 personally, seeing it as the culminati ...more

I was thrilled when I discovered there is a new translatuon of biography written on one of the greatest European/Italian journalists/reporters from my younger age. Oriana Fallaci was born in 1929 (the same year as my father) and also died at the same year as him, 2006. As a reporter she travelled and covered the most interesting events, wars, interviews. Her articles were very special, her questions at interviews were interesting, private, nosy, brave...even when she was interviewing people such ...more

"I had seen them arrive: orderly, disciplined, regimented, a real flock that goes where those who command want it to go, those who promise, who frighten, it proceeds with closed eyes since there's no need to see the road, the road is a solid stream of fleece that will arrive at the square chosen by the power in charge..... long live whoever comes along, long live whoever is at the top of the mountain, never long live the poor bastards that die so that the sheep may become men and women."

She was a tough journalist, a celebrity interviewer and a best-selling author. Think Christiane Amanpour meets Barbara Walters. When I was a young aspiring college journalist, she was one of the women I looked up to. I watched her to see how it was done. Oriana made her reputation as a war correspondent in Vietnam, but it was her hard-hitting interviews with world figures that made her famous. Henry Kissinger, Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, the Shah of Iran, and Lech Walesa. When I wrote for the Dai ...more

A biography of a very accomplished journalist and later a writer.
She is fearless, and brilliant and not one to take no for an answer.
Her interviews with top world politicians left a high mark in her journalistic career.
She operated in mostly ‘man’s world’, but took no prisoners.
She was obsessive, and thorough, and proved to herself that her gender was no hinderance.

The author did an excellent job in portraying Oriana Fallaci at times tormented, as professional and whose interviews, and arti

I didn't know anything of Oriana Fallaci before I won this book in a GoodReads giveaway. Now I sit here, having closed the cover, inspired by her gall, saddened by her losses, and encouraged to live life as she did: bravely. This is a woman we should all get to know, though we may never completely or truly understand her, because in the knowing we will gain more than mere facts. We gain (at least I hope), a bit of her shrewd mind to help us navigate the world we find ourselves in-a world I would ...more

A functional account of Fallaci's life in a plodding translation. She seems to have been a fascinating person, even admirable, if not loveable. One of the authors of modern celebrity culture *and* an audacious war correspondent *and* one of the most challenging interviewers ever.
Patti
Interesting from an historical standpoint but starts to get to be a tad dull. I am wondering if this has to do with the quality of the translation.
