“Action-packed …. Rice's writing is solid and the premise intriguing.” --Publishers Weekly (re A Quest of Heroes)
“I await each release by this author eagerly and have never been disappointed!” --Book Reviewer (Wish) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
From #1 bestseller and USA Today bestseller Morgan Rice, whose books have over 10,000 five-star ratings, comes the debut of a spectacular new fantasy series, DEATHBORN, ideal for fans of Rebecca Yarros, Callie Hart, and Carissa Broadbent.
When the dead start whispering to Elara Gray on her 18th birthday, she thinks she’s losing her mind.
But then comes the invitation to Greyveil Academy, a school hidden in the misty mountains where the veil between worlds is paper-thin.
Turns out, she isn't crazy—she's Deathborn, the rarest and most feared type of supernatural. Those with her gift can command the dead, making them dangerous to everyone living.
But Greyveil isn't the sanctuary Elara hoped for. The school operates on a brutal hierarchy based on supernatural lineage—and Deathborn are at the bottom.
At Greyveil, they teach that death is just another beginning. Elara is starting to believe them. But if she can't master her abilities and find allies among her enemies, it might be the end for all of them.
Because in this world, it's not just the dead you need to fear—it's what controls them.
Seductive romance meets supernatural intrigue in a high-stakes world where mortality's boundaries fade and forbidden power awaits those willing to pay its terrible price. As enemies become reluctant lovers amidst ancient magic and deadly political games, morally complex characters must navigate their darkest desires and dangerous alliances—challenging readers to question how much they would sacrifice for power that transcends the veil between life and death.
Future books in the series are available!

A slow audiobook but a good story. I also realize it's a series and I'm debating if I want to continue... and invest in either getting physical copies or ebooks. Part of me wishes I should get the physical copy for the first one but wanted to experience to just listen and taking a break looking at a screen/ physical read. Not bad for a free audiobook from a Google play book.
I was given an ARC of this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Elara hears whispers, is she losing her mind? Book one of this new series introduces Elara Gray, in the foster system, who is suddenly plunged into a strange world of magic.
Well-written and fast-paced, this fantasy delves into a fantasy world where the Deathborn and other supernatural groups attend a particular school.
Great characters, some likeable, some not and, of course, dark forces are part of the plot.
This was a surprisingly entertaining quick read. Academy reads aren’t exactly original, and this had some of the same things you’d expect in any Academy book: fmc has no idea she has powers until her 18th birthday, gets an invite to the supernatural school Harry Potter style, clear division of social status complete with the mean girls.
But it still manages to not feel cliche and the plot itself felt creative enough that it didn’t feel like every other academy book I’ve read. I’m looking forward to seeing her learn to use her death magic in the future books.
I downloaded this audiobook because it was free, not knowing anything about the plot or really expecting much. But I was pleasantly surprised with how much I actually enjoyed this!
This book does give Harry Potter vibes with the magic, academia aesthetic, working together to stop evil forces, etc. The elemental magic is something I've seen before, but the light and deathborn magic was a bit more unique and interesting. I'm also now very much invested in Elara and her two seemingly potentially love interests 👀
I recognized the author's name and was pleasantly surprised by the offer of a free book, the beginning of a series. While not a fan of the current craze for series writing, I hoped for the best, downloaded the story, and began reading. Immediately, I was engaged by the opening chapters and enjoyed the unfolding story.
But to be honest, when it ended, I didn't love the story enough to buy more. I had no real empathy for any of the characters beyond general curiosity and was not invested enough in the storyline for continuation.
I always like Morgan Rice's style of writing. I already bought the next two books in this series. I'm taking a closer look at Morgan Rice's other series. Thank you, for the enjoyment of the story.
Solid read i enjoyed it for the most part. Dont know if I'll continue the series as this one really did pull me in the way it needed to for me to commit to a series.
Once again, another incredible book from one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to see what happens next, and will there be a little more romance and maybe competition between the two young men to get Elara’s attention. Grab your copy, you won’t be disappointed
This felt like poor, gender swapped, Harry Potter fanfic. The book kept repeating things that were already said, or already explained and I find that incredibly taxing.
I really enjoyed this unique fantasy story. The romance is so subtle & sweet. The context reminds me of Harry Potter or Fourth Wing. I really enjoyed it!
