Book review : "Indecipherable" by Aalysa Morales
Aalysa Morales’ Indecipherable: A Psychological Thriller is a compelling combination of atmosphere and character tension and shows how buried truths reveal themselves gradually. The story begins with a court confession, then often works back through a cold case touching back in the 1980's, to connect the past with the present as objects of interest were found that should not have been touched. Morales combines an ongoing search for the truth through an investigation and an intimate understanding of both the character and their relationships. Morales intertwines the investigative aspect with Lorelai and Cordelia's developing friendship as the emotional anchor for the overall plot line.
The greatest strength of Indecipherable is the author's psychological insight. Rather than relying on constant motion, Indecipherable builds tension through journals, letters, flashbacks and fragmented recollections, allowing the reader to build upon the feeling of fear through the course of reading. The language is vivid but not overdone, while the author switches viewpoints as needed to continue the theme that truth is rarely "whole" and that memories are often inaccurate.
Indecipherable examines issues of investigating without legal authority and the moral obligations formed through obsessive investigators. Readers who enjoy suspenseful and thought-provoking, emotional stories that build during the course of the book will be drawn in and haunted long after they finish the book.
