one of THE best romantasy books of 2026.

ARC READ
Objectively, this was a good book. For some reason, I just wasn’t gripped by it. I felt like there were some inconsistencies or something that threw me off. For example, it didn’t seem like there was much electricity (and maybe there was, and I just didn’t pick up on it), but randomly, there was a fan in the bedchambers? And the whole story is about the Angel Realm versus the Demon Realm, but then another Realm was randomly mentioned in passing. Where is that Realm?
I do think the plot is interesting, and I like the tropes. It’s a complex world with 2 interconnected duologies to complete the war plot. I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, and I’m sure I’d have to read the second book of this duology to understand the reasons why. I’m not sure I’ll go back for the rest of this series though, personally.
However, don’t count this out on the basis of my review. Like I said, I do objectively think this has the makings of a good book and a good series. If I had read it last year when I had more time and mental capacity, I think I would’ve been a little more gripped by it.
So, if you like enemies-to-lovers, touch her and die, political intrigue, high stakes fantasy, and feminine rage; this might be a great book for you!

This one frustrated me… but in a way that still kept me emotionally invested.
And by the end, I’m really glad I stayed.
Set in the same world as the Deathcaller Duet, this story shifts away from the demon-POV battlefield warfare and instead dives into the angel POV, palace politics, corruption, and the cost of blind loyalty.
The cliffhanger ending had my jaw on the floor.

💭 My Reading Experience
This story opens strong and intense, with heavy worldbuilding that throws you directly into angel hierarchy, magic systems, and religious structure. There’s a lot of terminology early on, but I didn’t mind piecing it together as the story unfolded.
Where the Deathcaller Duet centered on active warfare and battlefield survival, this book focuses on a different kind of danger: the corruption festering behind palace walls.
The war is still happening, but the true tension lies within the monarchy.
The king and queen claim they are carrying out the Goddess’s will, yet they sacrifice and hunt their own angels to maintain power. Soldiers are treated as expendable. Their armies are left starving. Loyalty is demanded while leaders hoard wealth and cling to the throne.
Faith becomes a weapon. Devotion becomes control.
That betrayal adds emotional weight to the story. The threat isn’t just demons across the battlefield — it’s rulers manipulating their own people from within.
The first portion of the book moves quickly, especially during the hunt for Sylaira. That tension pulled me in immediately.
However, the middle section slows significantly. The travel stretch to the palace, and even after they arrive, feels repetitive, with a lot of internal back-and-forth that stalls momentum. This is where the slow-burn romance felt more frustrating than tense.
But the final portion of the book absolutely delivers.
The political stakes escalate. Loyalties fracture. And Sylaira finally begins stepping into her strength instead of running from it. The last stretch reminded me why I love this world so much.

Sylaira is a powerful seer who views her gift as a curse. After witnessing countless deaths, she suppresses her abilities and lives on the run to avoid becoming a pawn in the monarchy’s war.
For much of the book, she struggles internally, torn between fear, duty, resentment, and a bond she never wanted. At times, her indecision frustrated me, especially during the slower middle section.
But when she finally stops running and starts standing her ground, her growth becomes satisfying. Watching her shift from survival mode to quiet defiance felt earned.
Her strength shows most when she refuses to kneel — not just physically, but emotionally.

He understands he’s a puppet. He knows his sister and the king manipulate faith for control. And yet he’s trapped in a role he was molded into since childhood.
The contrast between his ruthless reputation and the quiet ways he protects Sylaira adds depth to his character. His loyalty isn’t blind — it’s burdened.
His arc feels like a man slowly realizing he deserves more than being used.
“For the first time, I saw exactly who Iaoth had become. And in that same broken shard, who I had allowed myself to be. A good dog, waiting on his next command.”

Gosh, I love being in a world of Lacey’s creating. Her books just yank you inside and keep you on the edge of your seat. Dark, gritty, relatable, fantastical, and deliciously spicy, this first in her newest duet, Mindbreaker, is set in the same world as the Deathcaller duet but we get to visit the angels now.
We follow a dual POV in ASTBB and the yearning is HERE. Sylaira has been on the run her whole life because of her sought after power as a Seer, but when the very first vision she ever saw, which was of her Mate, comes to fruition, Sylaira is faced with the knowledge that her Mate is the man who murdered her family and is ordered to capture her.
All Vaeron has ever known is duty. It’s literally carved into his flesh. But when his gaze meets that of a Seer fugitive and their mate bond kicks in, Vaeron learns that duty has more depth, need, and sacrifice than he has ever known. His broken soul has found purpose, except that she wants nothing to do with him.
Bound to an angelic court that is rife with corruption and deceit, Vaeron and Sylaira not only have to learn how to navigate this new bond from hatred to reluctant allies, but also how to survive where the possibility for hope is but a flicker of a flame.
As always, Lacey creates characters that are flawed, morally grey, relatable, and complex. Some are redeemable. Some are learning to fight for themselves. All are operating on their own agenda. Plot twists and betrayals and intrigue keeps you turning each page. Tension, a tantalizing burn, and phenomenal spice keeps you glued to your seat long after you should be asleep. I love these two. I love the found family. I was so stressed the whole time. The ending was 😱😱 and it’s going to be SO HARD waiting for book two. But I 👏 am👏 here👏 for👏 it👏.

If you enjoy tension, fate bonds and a hunter who might regret his assignment, this one definitely should be on your list!
Sylaira has spent decades fleeing the Regents because of her abilities. Vaeron is the hunter sent after her, bound by duty to his sister and used as a tool for her and her husband’s ambitions. Then their eyes meet and, naturally, the fate bond snaps into place.
I liked the tension of this setup a lot. Both are caught between duty and emotions while trying to protect what matters to them. The beautiful detail that eye colour reflects power level is a neat touch in the magic system.
Bonus points for the added playlist. In my head our MMC looks like the Witcher with icy eyes, smelling faintly of stormwood and smoke.
Fast paced and engaging and of course ending on a cliffhanger. I will definitely pick up the second book.

I finished this in two days because I couldn’t put it down. The story pulled me in quickly, and I became really invested in the characters and their journey. The romance had great tension and chemistry, and the stakes throughout the fantasy plot kept me hooked.
I found myself rooting for the characters the entire time. Parts of the story were heartbreaking, but that emotional depth made it even more impactful. Overall, it was a gripping and memorable read that I really enjoyed.

Thank you to the author and Grey’s Promotions for an early copy of And so the Breaking Begins. This book hooked me pretty early on and I read it in one day because I couldn’t put it down. As soon as the FMC and MMC were on the page together, I felt their chemistry. The tension continued through most of the book, which isn’t easy to maintain. I loved both of these characters and felt the emotions and motivations of each of them. The plot and the romance were both pretty equal in this book, which I really enjoyed. The ending was shocking and has me wondering how that twist is going to play out and impact book 2. I can’t stop thinking about this book and I’m sad that I finished it so quickly because I want more.

This book came at the perfect time for me. I was just thinking that it had been a while since I read a fated mates with mind speaking and I was really starting to miss it. Then 💥… everything I thought I knew and loved about that particular trope was delicately placed on the table and then hit repeatedly with a mallet until it broke- literally.
In a very quick recap (because I really think you should read it and find out) Sylaira is an extremely powerful seer in hiding with her peaceful community who all don’t believe in the war currently raging between the Angels and Demons. Vaeron is tasked by the current monarchs to hunt and capture her kind. He is also personally responsible for the death of her family. She hates him and everything she thinks he stands for. He continues to let her run in the beginning because he likes the chase way too much.
This story has political intrigue, feminine rage, secret after secret, betrayal for days, and monarchs you want to see ☠️
The romance was chef kiss- there’s banter, the intimate moments build beautifully, he has light power to rival our favourite shadow daddy’s and you simultaneously want to root for them and scream at them.
I will be stalking Lacey for all signs of book 2 and will cancel all of my real life when the times comes for me to read it! In the meantime I’m going to read the Deathcaller Duet and fall in love with the demons 🫠🫠

This book came at the perfect time for me. I was just thinking that it had been a while since I read a fated mates with mind speaking and I was really starting to miss it. Then 💥… everything I thought I knew and loved about that particular trope was delicately placed on the table and then hit repeatedly with a mallet until it broke- literally.
In a very quick recap (because I really think you should read it and find out) Sylaira is an extremely powerful seer in hiding with her peaceful community who all don’t believe in the war currently raging between the Angels and Demons. Vaeron is tasked by the current monarchs to hunt and capture her kind. He is also personally responsible for the death of her family. She hates him and everything she thinks he stands for. He continues to let her run in the beginning because he likes the chase way too much.
This story has political intrigue, feminine rage, secret after secret, betrayal for days, and monarchs you want to see ☠️
The romance was chef kiss- there’s banter, the intimate moments build beautifully, he has light power to rival our favourite shadow daddy’s and you simultaneously want to root for them and scream at them.
I will be stalking Lacey for all signs of book 2 and will cancel all of my real life when the times comes for me to read it! In the meantime I’m going to read the Deathcaller Duet and fall in love with the demons 🫠🫠
I’m obsessed! I’ve been deceived. My hearts a little broken. And I’m so happy to say this was my latest 5 star read.

This was such a fantastic romantasy. It was dark, spicy and emotional. There was a lot of world building and characters introductions in the beginning of the story. You get directly thrown into the world of angel hierarchy and their magic system. You find out what eye colors possess the most powers and who is hunter for what they can do. You also get a taste of the Koron and Korona and the declared war with the demons. They are in need of Seers now more than ever to help them carry out their plans.
I loved Sylaira and Vaeron. I felt that together they were very deep and emotional characters who had to grow and develop on their own to see their true potentials. They both had tremendous growth throughout the book. The middle of the book is a little slower, it push through because the ending was worth it!!

ARC review ✨ Intricate world building and unique magic system. My only reason for giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that the beginning felt a bit slow. It took some time to fully get into the story and find the pacing. That said, once it picked up, I was completely hooked and really enjoyed where the story went.

I received an ARC to read and review here are my thoughts. I have officially entered my angels and demons ARC era, and And So the Breaking Begins was the perfect way to start.
This is my first book by Lacey Lehotzky, but after this, her Deathcaller Duet is no longer just sitting on my TBR—it’s next up. I’m already obsessed with the fact that this duet connects to a larger series, An Age of War and Prophecy. I love interconnected worlds, and knowing going in that this story is part of something bigger immediately had me invested.
I absolutely loved this book.
It delivers everything I want in romantasy—enemies to lovers, a slow burn that builds real tension, and fated mates that are messy, complicated, and just the right amount of toxic. The relationship dynamics are not clean or easy, and that’s what makes it so addictive.
The worldbuilding was another highlight for me. The magic system and, especially, the hierarchy within the angel realm felt layered and intentional. The political intrigue, not just between factions but within the angels themselves, added so much depth to the story and kept me fully locked in.
Lyra is exactly the kind of FMC I love—stubborn, determined, and more than capable of holding her own. She doesn’t back down, and she’s not afraid to use her voice, even when it would be easier not to.
And then there’s Vaeron… who is absolutely my type of MMC. Morally grey, misunderstood, and full of red flags, but with that underlying edge of loyalty and protectiveness that makes you question all your life choices. He’s dangerous, controlled by forces far worse than himself, and yet there’s something about him that makes it impossible not to root for him. The character development in this book is so well done. The dual POV, along with the interludes and flashbacks, added so much depth to both characters. You really get to understand their pasts, their trauma, and the reasoning behind their choices, which made every moment hit that much harder.
And the emotional investment? So real. The author does an incredible job of making you truly loathe certain characters while loving others just as fiercely. That kind of reaction doesn’t happen by accident.
The balance between plot and romance was perfect, and when the spice finally makes its appearance, it absolutely delivers.
Did I stay up until midnight to finish this? Yes, I did. Am I still recovering from that ending? Also yes. It was brutal in the best way, and I love a good cliffhanger—even if it leaves me emotionally unwell.
I will absolutely be needing book two as soon as possible. In the meantime, I’ll be diving into Eyes of Devious Burgundy because I am not ready to leave this world.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book😭 I love how it put me into emotional turmoil throughout reading it, how the storyline flipped my emotions from tense, sad, happy, angry, shocked, sad again, happy again, then until my heart was shattered into pieces...😭 I think this author is so good at playing with all our emotions😭 because yes, she succeeded in leaving me emotionally impacted😭 I hate that cliffhanger ending😭, and I hate it even more that I don't know when the sequel will be released😭😭
The storyline gripped me from the very first few pages. I was so engrossed and easily transported into this Angel realm full of political intrigue, the worldbuilding is immersive without being too heavy, I love the characters and their development🔥 and I really hate the villains in this book, who I'm definitely sure made every reader want to slap them hard in the face.

Thisssss book! I devoured it! It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! This is my first book that I have read from An Age of War and Prophecy…. And I wasn’t disappointed whosoever.
“They called the loss of life Goddess-sanctioned, but it was ritualized slaughter.”
I love how this book portrays how there is no true good or bad in the midst of war. Each side believes they are doing whats best, and that is true here as well. It really is the ultimate grey area. The demons aren’t mentioned much in this one. This book specifically seems to focus on Sylaira, a seer who is a part of the Elessarum. A group of angels thats goal is to essentially stay neutral and just wants peace on both sides. The royals in this story stop at nothing in attempts to win their holy war and do it in the name of their goddess. That includes hunting down and killing the Elessarum, because they believe their neutrality is an act against them and also force the seers to see visions against their will. They essentially cage what is supposed to be considered the “most blessed by the goddess” in hopes to win their war. Again, who is worse? The angels or the demons? Whoever wins a war typically writes the history books.
“One of us must break… Or neither of us could survive.”
This book was the perfect slow burn, enemies to lovers/fated mates! Vaeron, the MMC is tasked to hunt down Sylaira, unaware that she is his fated mate… although she knew. So she flees and does her best to avoid him at all costs. She understandably loathes him, since he’s been the one responsible for the hunt down of her people. Vaeron’s mantra is “Duty above all”, but does that mean above his mate? Even by the end of the book they were still fighting a battle with their heads and hearts! And that my friends, is an enemies to lovers DONE RIGHT! There is plennnnnty of banter and both equally call the other out on their BS multiple times… which I love. She may want peace, but our FMC has a fighting spirit.
This book had plenty of twists along the way, and had a lot of gut wrenching moments… it ended on a pretty significant cliff hanger. Luckily, I have the other books to this series to fill my time… but, I can’t believe I have to wait to find out what happens next!
If your thing is dark romantasy with political intrigue, true enemies to lovers, fated mates, heavy banter, angels vs. demons, no true good vs evil, feminine rage, and secrets/betrayal… then you better grab this one asap, because I promise it is worth the read!

Okay, okay okay, so Sylaira has been on the run for absolute years with her group because they don't want their gifts to be taken advantage of, whilst Vaeron is tasked with tracking them down and taking them back to his sister aka the leader. (I absolutely hate her guts oop)
and when he finds her, hes intoxicated from the get go without even looking into her eyes whilst she wants nothing to do with him and is trying at all costs to avoid the mate bond snapping into place but alas it eventually had to.
The tension between the two of them was perfection, she did not make it easy for him and I loved that for her, she had the biggest back bone 🥰🙌
The journey back was probably my favourite part because of said tension and the obstacles they face.
When they get back to court, Sylaira is in over her head and it is an insane environment. Betrayels behind every twist and turn of the place.
Her best friend 🥺 I loved her and I loved a bunch of the side characters💞 they were so likeable and had full personalities which I adored.
The ending had me so stressed, well I'm still stressed since I only just finished it and so that's all that my adhd brain can say since I'm still processing the ending.
I need book 2 immediately.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC. These are my honest thoughts after reading.
And So the Breaking Begins follows Sylaira, a seer blessed with sight by the goddess, though it feels more like a curse. She’s spent her life being hunted for her power by the rulers of the angel realm, who want to use her in their war. Forced to stay on the run, she finds herself caught between survival, destiny, and something she never expected.
I just finished this book and I was hooked from the very first chapter. This was one of those books where I really did not want to put it down because every chapter was interesting and actually moved the story forward. Even when it slowed down a little, it still felt important and kept me wanting to read the next chapter.
I really loved the character development. Sylaira was such a good main character, she’s funny, determined, and very defiant. She stands her ground and doesn’t back down, which I absolutely loved. I also really liked the main male character and their relationship. Their dynamic was really interesting and I liked how it developed over time.
This is a dual POV story and I actually liked both perspectives. Usually there’s one POV I don’t care about as much, but that wasn’t the case here. Both of them added to the story, and it was nice being able to see what each of them was thinking and feeling at different points.
The world in this book was also really interesting. It felt different from what I usually read, especially with the more forest-based setting and the way some of the main locations were built into nature instead of a typical city setting. That made the whole atmosphere feel more immersive.
The author wrote this story really well and it was super easy to get into. I also liked how the book balanced everything, especially the political side of things along with the romance and the more emotional moments. It all worked really well together.
The villains were also really well done. You genuinely don’t like them, and not in a way that makes you want to root for them, but in a way that makes them feel like true antagonists. The side characters were also done really well, especially Sylaira’s best friend. Their friendship felt real and added a lot to the story.
I already want book two. The ending definitely left me wanting more and I’m really excited to see what happens next.
And So the Breaking Begins follows Sylaira, a seer blessed with sight by the goddess, though it feels more like a curse. She’s spent her life being hunted for her power by the rulers of the angel realm, who want to use her in their war. Forced to stay on the run, she finds herself caught between survival, destiny, and something she never expected.
I just finished this book and I was hooked from the very first chapter. This was one of those books where I really did not want to put it down because every chapter was interesting and actually moved the story forward. Even when it slowed down a little, it still felt important and kept me wanting to read the next chapter.

This book is the third in the An Age of War and Prophecy series, but the first installment in the Mindbreaker Duet, and wow… what a shift in perspective. This time we step away from the Demons and dive into the Angels’ side of the war, and it completely pulled me in.
Before I even get to the story, I need to say this: Lacey’s storytelling is phenomenal. From the very beginning she gives readers a pronunciation guide (bless) and a playlist that is absolute perfection. I don’t think I’ve ever connected with a book playlist this much — the overlap with my own music taste was chef’s kiss.
But something else that really struck me was the dedication. It honestly gave me goosebumps. The message behind it is such a powerful reminder: if you’ve ever felt small, weak, or afraid — stop for a moment and remember who you are. Find your worth. Grow the power you’ve kept hidden. Learn to love yourself enough to realize that you are strong, you are capable, and you are an absolute badass no matter who ever told you otherwise.
Now to the story.
We meet Sylaira, a peaceful Angel who has spent her life running from the crown and from the war itself. She carries one of the rarest gifts the Goddess can bestow — she’s a Seer. This book had me hooked from start to finish. The world-building, tension, and emotional depth are incredible. And yes, the spice is there — but it never overshadows the story. If anything, it enhances the emotional stakes and connection between the characters in the best way.

Ohmygod another amazing book by Lacey Lehotzky!!! I seriously could not put this one down! I absolutely loved her Deathcaller Duet but this book might be my favorite!!! The characters were absolutely amazing, the story was heart wrenching and devastating in the best way possible.
Sylaira is the FMC, she's a seer and she's on the run. And right from the beginning you just feel for her and want her to succeed. She is absolutely refused to See as she wants to avoid the horrors and screams she knows she will see. And of course she also knows she has a mate, so she wants to avoid him at all costs too. I really loved the chase in the beginning because you get to see the lengths she will go, the defiance she will put up to seek freedom.
Of course then in steps Vaeron, the MMC who is all duty above all. He's brother to the Korona and he's fighting for his own freedom in his own way. Now the chase that he has with Sylaira at the beginning had me just giggling and kicking my feet because his POV was just perfect. The banter between these two, the gentleness he has in her care just, oh I loved it so much. It's a very much enemies to lovers except he will absolutely destroy anyone who comes near her, whether she's still his enemy or not. And I just ATE IT UP. And of course the SPICE!!! Hot, hot and ooooh so worth the slow burn to get there. I just loved every minute of it!!!
There are also dark things happening throughout this book and not just behind enemy lines. The darkness grows from the two in charge who are slowly getting out of control as their power is coming into question. I loved the way that you could see Vaeron just begin to take back his power once he figures out who he really wants to fight for. Sylaira too, she has a realization moment about how she wants to live her life and her decision is empowering.
The growth in their relationship throughout this whole book was just beautiful and believable. The factors thrown at them to hinder their way to trust and love were absolutely massive and I spent a lot of time wondering how this would ever work out in the end. And of course the cliffhanger??? Vaeron has a lot of explaining to do and I hope Sylaira makes him work for it.

I have no words, and I still feel like I’m recovering.
It’s rare for a fantasy world to pull me in so completely that I feel disoriented coming back to reality, but this one did exactly that. I’m so glad I waited until the weekend to start it, because once I did, I couldn’t put it down. It would have been problematic during the work week. I honestly haven’t stopped thinking about this book since I finished it a week ago.
The characters are really what impacted from this story. Sometimes I don’t connected with characters, but I do with the overall storyline. This was both, the storyline and the characters, but leaned heavily on the characters. I wanted to hold them, comfort them, but also shake them. It’s very rare for me to feel equally frustrated with both leads. Usually one character infuriates me, but here, both Vaeran and Sylaira had moments that tested me. And yet, I understood them. Their choices, their motivations, their flaws. They all felt grounded and real within the world they inhabit.
Vaeran was especially compelling for me. He’s fully aware that his version of “protection” is flawed, even harmful, and yet he still operates within it because it’s all he knows. Watching him try to navigate expectations placed on him while still attempting to do right by those he cares about added so much depth to his character. He felt far more layered than what this trope typically delivers in fantasy romance. He also is willing to learn from Sylaira, and tries to concede as much as he can for her.
Sylaira was equally fascinating in a different way. Her strength in her beliefs and actions stood out to me, but what intrigued me most was her lingering naivety despite everything she’s endured. It’s not often you see a character experience trauma like she did, and still hold onto softer, less cynical views of the world. I’m really looking forward to seeing how she grows beyond that in the next book.
I felt that the relationships in this story are incredibly complex. Not just the central romance, but especially Vaeran’s relationship with his sister. I personally understood that dynamic, probably more than I wanted to. The idea that you can’t always separate who someone was from who they’ve become (especially when that person turns manipulative or abusive) is something that I connected with. I understood why he couldn’t just walk away, even when it would have been easier and healthier.
Then, there’s the worldbuilding that Lacey has beautifully done. Specifically the portrayal of the angels. I loved how the story completely flips the expected narrative for angels. Instead of being purely divine or righteous, they embody a kind of religious fanaticism that is deeply corrupt. The idea that the “greater good” justifies any sacrifice, even family, adds a layer to the story and really makes you question perspective, morality, and power.
Overall I would recommend this book for people who enjoy complex fantasy storylines that bring emotion, romance and character depth.

This time we follow Sylaira a powerful seer who has been on the run her whole life as she strives for peace she was young when her first vision showed her death and destruction but also her fated mate the one man she loathes above all else.
Vaeron has only known duty which was literally carved into his chest. He is ordered to hunt down the peace loving seers but once he looks into his mates eyes things start to unravel.
Between the two of them they have to navigate a corrupt Angelic court, tyrannical leadership and the tug of the bond that is trying to pull them from enemies to reluctant allies/lovers.
Lacey has yet again created characters that are imperfect, complex and relatable. This story wants you to root for the morally grey character while reassuring our heroine that she will recover from the cliffhanger.
Overall, this was a gripping continuation of the series. The story pulls you in so quickly that putting it down becomes almost impossible—I definitely struggled to stop reading. If you enjoyed the Deathcaller Duet, diving into the Mindbreaker Duet is absolutely worth it.

And So the Breaking Begins by Lacey Lehotzky completely took me by surprise—in the best possible way. I went in expecting a strong romantasy, but what I found was something far more layered, emotional, and unforgettable.
This story delivers on every level. The political intrigue is rich and compelling, weaving tension throughout the narrative without ever overshadowing the characters. Instead, it enhances their journeys, raising the stakes and making every decision feel significant.

I received an ARC of And So the Breaking Begins by Lacey Lehotzky (thank you to the author and Grey's Promotions), and wow… this one really got to me.
The standout for me was the dynamic between the MMC and FMC (Vaeron and Sylaira). I loved them. Their relationship had a perfect mix of tension, vulnerability, and emotional depth that just pulls you in and refuses to let go. The way they challenged each other, opened up (sometimes reluctantly), and slowly let their walls down felt real and immensely satisfying to read. I was fully invested in them the entire time.
This is definitely a character-driven story, and it really shines because of that. The writing has a quiet intensity to it, and the emotional moments hit in a way that sneaks up on you. You can feel the characters working through things, and it makes their journey feel genuine rather than rushed.
And yes—the spice was great. It felt well-balanced with the emotional side of the story and added another layer to the connection between the characters rather than taking away from it.
I also really appreciated the theme of “breaking” and rebuilding—emotionally, personally, and within relationships. It added a lot of depth and made the story feel more impactful than just a standard romance.
If I had one tiny critique, I just wish a couple of moments (especially toward the end) had been stretched out a little more. I wasn’t quite ready to let go of Vaeron yet.
I also really loved the 'found family' elements of the book. Sylaira and Heraphia's relationship was so so lovely.
Overall, this was such an engaging and emotional read with a relationship I won’t forget anytime soon. Definitely recommend if you love angsty, character-driven romance with lots of heart (and some great spice 👀). Cannot wait for the sequel!

The magic and worldbuilding are intriguing and believable, keeping readers ensnared with little confusion.
The characters and their journey-- fated mates that start as enemies to lovers and morph from forced proximity-- was well written, a push and pull dance that is not always easy to do. The ending was shrouded in mystery-- because of the dual POV, and the way that Vaeron fought to keep Sylaira from his thoughts, we as readers are also equally confused and caught off guard in the final few pages.

Firstly, can we just talk about the dedication!? Girl - just that alone would have me reading this book (I’d read it anyway but 🔥🔥) but it had me in my feels honestly! I’ve loved everything I’ve ever read of Lacey’s and I was so excited to get my hands on this book early!! Even the playlist was on point! I also appreciate when books have pronunciation guides in the beginning (thank you authors) because I legit butcher a name really quick 😂 so it’s super helpful. This is book one of a duet but within a larger series.
The way this story was written just pulls you in from the very beginning- I didn’t want to put it down! The balance between plot and the actual romance I felt was pretty darn spectacular - it wasn’t too much of one versus the other. There’s tension, spice, confusion of feelings, politics/corruption and war. The mc’s hate each for good reason but each are flawed in their own ways and have their reasons for being the way that they are.
Sylaria is our FMC, totally baddie with a power that everyone wants her for. She views it as a curse and has been running from it her entire life - the visions she gets are a blessing and a curse with being a Seer. Her first vision was of her mate - the problem with this is that when this vision becomes real life, she alone knows that he’s the man that killed her family and tasked with capturing her. How can this even be possible!?
Vaeron is the brother of the crown - all he’s known is duty and servitude. He’s supposed to capture said Seer’s and Angels to present to his sister but lines blur when he crosses paths with Sylaria.
She knows something he doesn’t and hates him for it. When their mate bond starts to kick in, things start to change and Vaeron questions everything he’s known. Can her hatred be swayed to survive?
After that ending, I’m ready for book 2! Thank you Lacey and Greys PR for the early read. All opinions are my own but so excited I got to read this!!

And So The Breaking Begins is the perfect complement to the Deathcaller Duet, especially if you spent a lot of time wondering what was happening on the Angel side of the war. I kept finding myself thinking, “Okay, this is where the demons are now.” Lacey Lehotzky does a phenomenal job with worldbuilding and weaving the timelines of the books together while still giving us two very different, fully independent ‘romance’ stories.
When we first meet Sylaira and Vaeron, they’re both fiercely committed to their causes for very different reasons. Duty above all. Peace before harm.

And of course, there’s some agonizing political corruption in the Angel court (because of course there is). By the end, I was left with so many questions. Waiting for book two is going to be torture, but I absolutely cannot wait to see where this story goes next.

Make them bitter. Make them break. Ahhh, it’s so good. It’s also exciting to see the other side of the larger war between Angels and Demons (all the praise for Eyes of Devious Burgundy & Horns of Wicked Ebony too). It’s a fascinating way to weave what idolatry, desperation, and torn loyalties will do to both sides of a war. Neither side is wholly good or bad. And the characters are all so unique and fierce that you root for all of them. And the 🌶️?! It has me begging for more (breath play, restraints made from his light, biting, etc. let’s gooo). 😮💨
