Secrets don’t die. They just transfer schools.

New York native Billie Vale arrives at Wickham Academy, England’s most elite boarding school, with a forged identity as Belinda Winters and one mission: clear her sister’s name. Isla lies in a coma, accused of killing her best friend. Billie has one shot to uncover the truth in a school built on privilege and deception. Succeed, and her estranged father will finally help her mother. Fail, and it will tear what’s left of her family apart.

But Wickham’s secrets run deep, and not everyone wants them exposed. The school’s golden prince and its brooding outcast both seem to know more than they’ll admit—and both have reasons to keep Billie close. As she digs into the lies that built Wickham’s empire, she discovers that loyalty is just another currency, every hallway hides a motive, and everyone here protects their own at any cost.

But someone at Wickham knows what really happened…
And they’ll bury Billie before they let her find out.

Perfect for readers who loved the dark social hierarchies of Gossip Girl and the twisty, secret-laden tension of One of Us Is Lying, A Thousand Perfect Lies delivers prep-school glamour, sisterly redemption, and a mystery that turns privilege into peril.

I haven't read a YA book in a hot minute, and I love this authors angsty vibes so definitely wanted to read this.. This year for me it's all about mixing up my genres and just jumping onto new ones, old ones, and this one fits perfectly into jumping back into the YA genre...

Tropes:
❥ British hero
❥ Enemies to lovers
❥ Hidden identity
❥ Gossip girl vibes
❥ First love
❥ Dark academia

My Rambling Thoughts...I had high hopes for this one, so I kind of had mixed feelings about it, being that it's YA it missed that angsty itch, which I was craving, and typically comes with this genre, and especially with the tropes included, it just seemed too predictable, and very insta love, which I really don't do..I just didn't feel anything really towards them or their connection.

The beginning started off with a bang, and it got me hooked, middle part fell away, where the pace of the storyline slowed down, then seemed to pick up again as we're reaching the end and within a flash it was finished.

I expected a bit of a push and pull between the two main characters especially when all the lies unfolded, I wanted that slow burn, enemies to lovers feeling to hit where those hurtful angsty feels I would expect to feel hit me. So it fell flat for me in that area too. But I did enjoy the gossip girl mystery vibes to the story, which kept me invested to the end.

BIG thank you to Entangled Publishing | Mayhem Books and Monica Murphy for the gifted ARC! As of today, March 3rd, Happy publishing day to A Thousand Perfect Lies!

I don't know what it is, but YA thrillers are sometimes more entertaining than regular adult thrillers. A Thousand Perfect Lies scratched an itch in my brain I didn't even know I had. If you're a big fan of the aesthetics of Gossip Girl, the mystery of Pretty Little Liars, and the setting of Maxton Hall, I think you're going to absolutely DEVOUR this book as I did. The book was entirely bingeable, and I could've read it in one sitting had it not been for my work schedule. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I can't believe this book was only the second thriller I've ever read where I couldn't guess the ending at all! (That's a good thing!!)

Billie Vale has lived a rough life in the city. With a mom suffering from addiction, she has to take care of herself and her mother working at a local bar to make ends meet. When she finds out that her younger sister, Isla, with whom she was separated and now lives in England with their father, Peter, is in a coma after an accident at her prestigious boarding school, Wickham Academy, Billie has to travel to England upon Peter's request to figure out what really happened to her sister. Billie Vale suddenly turns into Belinda Winters, Manhattan teen socialite, overnight, as she goes undercover at Wickham to piece the clues together surrounding Isla, because there's a catch: Isla is the top suspect of her best friend Emily's murder and will be charged for it if she can't find out what happened in time.

This was my first-ever Monica Murphy book, and it did NOT disappoint! I absolutely loved the atmosphere and the vibes of the story, and I think she pulled off "snooty rich trust fund kids trying to keep it together at a prestigious academy" amazingly well. Like, you know it's good when I wanted to punch Priya and her friends in the face, and they're not even real characters. On top of that, I felt that the story was well-paced and there was just enough action in every chapter to keep you wanting to turn the pages to find out what happens next. The chapters were on the longer side, which can make the story feel slow at times, but I never felt that reading this was tedious at all because I was just so invested in the storyline.

There were a LOT of moving parts in this story, and usually, that would be a bad thing, but in the context of a thriller, that, to me, is a good thing! I felt like I was following Billie along, trying to piece all of the clues and moving parts together. I will admit that this story kept me on my toes for the entirety of the time I was reading! Like I mentioned earlier, this is the first thriller in a long while where I felt that I couldn't guess what was going on because there were so many red herrings thrown into the story to knock you off your trail and make you think that someone else was the killer, but really wasn't. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, there was yet another suspect who was no longer on my whodunit list, and I had to start all over again with my theories.

I especially liked how Billie was able to have normal teenager experiences woven throughout the story. I'll admit, I was definitely suspicious of a lot of the people who turned out to be really nice to her and ended up becoming her friends, but nope, they just wanted to be friends and hang out together! At the end of the day, I liked the balance between the mystery and the regular "YA contemporary" vibes that went along with the setting of the book. I think it helped Billie's character development outside of the mystery. She was able to experience a lot of things that she wasn't able to in her life back home: having friends, falling in love, and just being a teenager, because that's what she was at the end of the day.

I took off 0.75 stars for the following reasons:

ʚ ୨ৎ ɞ The slang: I'm not gonna lie, I definitely cringed inside seeing "delulu" show up in my ARC. There were a bunch of other Gen Z/Gen Alpha slang terms in the story, but that's the one I remembered the most. I get that this is more of a me problem because Billie and the rest of the characters were 17/18 in the story, after all, but I remembered reading that and being like, "Yeah, I think I'm too old for this."😂

ʚ ୨ৎ ɞ Billie and Connor: Okay, were they cute together? Yes. Do I think it went from 0 to 1,000 extremely fast? Also yes. I felt like there was literally a light switch that someone flipped on in Connor's head, and he suddenly went from being this broody outcast who didn't like talking to people after his sister, Emily, died, to wanting to kiss Billie and spend time with her. Mind you, this entire story takes place over the course of 2 weeks, so their relationship overall felt extremely rushed and came out of nowhere. Granted, they are teenagers, so it could also just be the possibility of hormones and young love taking over, but I still think it needed more time to develop.

Overall, this was such a good read, and I can't wait to read more from Monica Murphy in the future! I've heard a lot of good things about her other series and have always been on the fence on starting them, but I think this book was the push I needed to look into reading her other books. This was one of my favorite reads of February 2026, and I hope other people will love this as much as I did!

Trigger/content warnings: sexual content (1.25/5 on my personal scale, but I know this may vary for different readers), graphic violence, substance abuse and addiction, mentions of drug use, alcohol consumption

⋅˚₊‧ ୨ 𝒫𝓇𝑒-𝓇𝑒𝒶𝒹 (2/21/2026): ୧ ‧₊˚ ⋅ Guys, this book has been on my radar for so long that it used to have a different title AND a different cover. Like, I knew about this book back when it used to be called The Liar's Club, and it looked like it had a dark academia-style cover with dark pink sprayed edges. I'm sure the photos still exist somewhere online if you look it up. I got surprise book mail from the publisher, Entangled Publishing, yesterday, and lo and behold, it was a physical ARC of this book! If you don't already know, getting book mail from Entangled is highly randomized based on who's in their influencer sign-up list (AKA tens of thousands of people), so getting this was literally like winning the ARC lottery for me.

📚A Thousand Perfect Lies
✍🏼Monica Murphy
🌶️1/5

A Thousand Perfect Lies was a really entertaining read that mixes romance with a mystery. The story follows Billie, who goes to an elite boarding school in England under a fake identity to prove that her sister is innocent. Her sister is in a coma and accused of murder, so Billie only has a short amount of time to find out what really happened. The school setting, the secrets between the students, and the hidden identities made the story very interesting to follow. I especially enjoyed the twists in the book and trying to figure out the truth along with Billie.

Billie was a strong and determined main character, and it was nice to see her slowly find people she could trust, especially her friendship with Sophia. The romance with Connor develops very quickly, which is the main reason I didn’t give the book five stars. Still, their connection was emotional and meaningful because both characters were dealing with their own struggles. What I liked the most about this story is that it wasn’t only about romance, there was also a mystery to solve, secrets to uncover, and surprising moments that kept the story exciting. Overall, it was a fun and engaging read!

this book is a super fast read and the plot, while "extra" / dramatic, was entertaining and the ending wasn't entirely predictable, so i had fun. some stuff was a bit too convenient, but whatevs

however, i could NOT handle the tiktok-isms. most notably, the word "unalive" is used TWICE in here which is absolutely heinous 😭

a dark academia set in the uk?? 🇬🇧 sign me up!!! young adult thrillers hit sometimes and this one was good! it kept me engaged the entire time and i liked the romance between connor and billie 🤭 (they did move pretty quickly but). the writing/story was easy to follow and definitely bingeable to solving the mystery.

i will say the slang was what prevented this from being a higher rating, i just struggled with the cringe gen z/gen alpha slang but its fitting for the ages of the characters. its a me issue lol.

billie arrives at england’s most elite boarding school with a forged identity as belinda winters and one mission: clear her sister’s name who is in a coma and accused of killing her best friend. she has one shot to uncover the truth but the school’s secrets run deep and not everyone wants them exposed. the academy’s golden prince and its outcast both seem to know more than they’ll admit and both have reasons to keep billie close.

tropes: dark academia, enemies to lovers, hidden identity, murder mystery, close proximity, first love, tragic past, british boarding school, anti-hero

Thank you to entagled publishing for the early arc!

Billie's lives in New York working in a dive bar looking after her alcoholic mother while her younger sister lives in England with their father and goes to an elite school. One day Billie's sister has fallen off a cliff and is in a coma while another girl is dead and the only way to find out who did this is for Billie to go to England, face her estranged father, enroll in the elite academy pretend to be a new york socialite to fit in and gain the trust of a potential killer.

Billie has to tell lies left and right to fit in and find out what happened to her sister and we see Billie pretend to be who she is not to fit in. You meet other characters like her roommate that really feel like she is from gossip girl. The mystery of how her sister got into a coma and how her friend died keeps you guessing until the end and there are truths revealed that you don't see coming.
The world building and characters are also really good.
overall, recommend if you are looking for a short standalone mystery at an academy like gossip girl.

I would say this is a 3.5⭐️ rounded up! As a huge fan of the PLL and Gossip Girl shows I was super excited to dive into this… but I have to say it was slow at times! HOWEVER, I did enjoy the overall story and definitely loved the way you never knew what to expect!

If you are a fan of quick, bingable reads that make you feel like you are solving the case; this one’s for you!

Thank you Entangled Publishing for this copy!!

I absolutely devoured this book. This was my first by Monica Murphy and I am officially a fan. I can’t wait to read more.

This book gave me pretty little liar vibes & I didn’t want to put it down. Elite boarding school, high society, full of secrets, a murder mystery, and of course some romance too. This one had me questioning so much and needing answers.

Billie is looking for justice for her sister, taking on a secret identity, and she is not going down without a fight. The tension, the family secrets, and the absolute chaos within these characters just kept me on my toes.

I was so here for Billie & Connor, both harboring pain & learning to open up, but also dealing with some pretty deep and dark situations! Connor was so broody & I loved it!! Billie is just a bad ass, strong willed FMC who was not going to give up on her mission to help her sister.

This one had me reeling and never once knowing what to full expect! I did not see the twist with this one & the ending was such a great wrap up to this book! Definitely recommend!!

I had the chance to read this early and it completely surprised me in the best way. I’ve been reading a lot of adult books lately, and this reminded me how strong a YA mystery can be without relying on heavy themes to stay interesting.

The pacing was quick, I was hooked almost immediately, and I flew through it in just a couple days. While a few elements felt slightly predictable, the final reveal genuinely caught me off guard, which I always appreciate in a murder mystery. Billie was such a compelling and likable main character, and I can see why the author has said she’s one of her favorites. Overall, such an entertaining and twisty read

A Thousand Perfect Lies brings us back to Murphy's academy days, but this story brings a totally different vibe than her Lancaster Prep books. This world is darker and filled with mystery that left twists and questions unsolved until almost the very end. It was a nice dive into something unexpected that still offered up a slice of Murphy's angsty romance.

Billie Vale takes on the persona of Belinda Winters, a socialite from Manhattan who has transferred to Wickham Academy, England’s most elite boarding school, in her final year. What she's really doing is gathering information on the death of a student and the injury that lead to why her sister is in a coma and facing murder charges for the prior. She's doing it as a favor for her father, in return to helping her mother. Billie also has no desire to see her sister in prison, so all around there is no way she'd say no, but like everything in life it's a bit more complicated than a simple favor.

Overall, this would seem like an impossible task, but somehow the plot actually works, not to mention, that on top of it all that the story was engaging, mysterious, and exciting. There was a constant wonder on who Billie should trust, who could potentially stab her in the back, or where she should even begin to look for information, etc... The entire process seemed daunting, but also thrilling.

What was hard to believe at first was her instantaneous crush and vice versa on Connor Wells. Billie hardly spent all of five minutes with him and suddenly they were deeply in like. That part was a bit weird, especially since there wasn't a lot of context around it, but soon after their chemistry took off and Connor's presence did feel more natural. It's the hit and run on my feels that lowered this review to a 4.5, but otherwise I did like the overall mystery that was hard to solve almost right up to the very end.

I went into A Thousand Perfect Lies by Monica Murphy expecting a YA thriller with a touch of romance — and that’s exactly what I got, plus a whole lot of drama.

Billie moves from the US to the UK and enrolls at an elite British boarding school under a hidden identity. Her goal is deeply personal: find out why her sister is in a coma and who killed her sister’s best friend. From the start, the premise is strong — secret identity, close proximity, family drama, and a murder mystery wrapped in a dark academia–style setting.

It did take me a little while to fully get into the story. The beginning felt somewhat slow, and I struggled to connect at first. But once the secrets started unraveling and the tension built, I was hooked. By the final stretch, I couldn’t put it down and kept second-guessing everyone. The paranoia was real.

The romance between Billie and Connor leans heavily into dislike-to-love and first love tropes. It definitely has an insta-love feel — they’ve only known each other for about two weeks — but they’re seventeen and thrown into intense, traumatic circumstances. The trauma bonding makes their fast connection more believable, even if it still felt a bit rushed at times. It very much captures that heightened, all-consuming “first love” energy.

Sophia was honestly one of my favorite parts of the book. In a story where almost everyone felt like a potential suspect, she was one of the only characters I truly trusted. Watching her become someone Billie could rely on added such a strong emotional layer to the story. Their friendship grounded everything.

Overall, this was a twisty, dramatic YA thriller with strong boarding school vibes, hidden identities, emotional stakes, and a central mystery that keeps you guessing. While the pacing wasn’t perfect for me at the start, the ending absolutely delivered.

I’m a big fan of Monica Murphy ever since I read my first book by her, and this book was no exception. This book was different from what I’m used to reading from Monica, since it’s a murder mystery, with a romance subplot. But this woman can write anything!!

The story takes place in a remote school for rich snobs, and it felt like I was right there. The moment Billie ran crying to Whitney, saying she couldn’t do this, almost broke me. I felt for her, for her story, her history, just everything. I love how she found herself, as Billie, acting like Belinda.

And I’m sorry, how did I not see the ending coming? I needed a minute to process it all… I had a little dip in the middle of the book. There were a lot of open storylines and things happening without getting any answers. I felt a little overwhelmed. I didn’t know whom to trust and whom to hate. I was so confused.

But that took a wild turn. I was in shock, hahahaha. I couldn’t stop reading from 70%, I just needed to know who did it, what happened, and I needed answers to all my questions!!

Monica, you did not disappoint! Thank you for this crazy ride!

This book has 3 things going for it that I love:
1. academia - give be a book that takes place in a school setting and I’m already halfway sold, especially elite boarding school. Why? Wish I could actually answer that.
2. whodunnit - someone died, someone else is in a coma… who did it? Billie goes under cover to find out!
3. romance - does it get more swoon y than the broody, mysterious Conner?
I had a great time reading this. Even as a slow reader, I flew through it. Monica Murphy had me guessing at every turn. I figured out one of the mysterious elements early on, but not some of the others… let’s see what you see coming and don’t. The setting is great, loved the plot, the new friendships and even enemies/rivals were organic, and the character development was fantastic - Loved Billie 💛
If you are looking for a good upper YA read and are a sucker for the 3 things I list above, then this book has you covered!
Many thanks to Entangled Teen/Mayhem Books and NetGalley for a digital copy of the book. The opinions expressed are given freely and are honest and my own.

I was a little skeptical starting this one, the older I get, the less likely I am to read a high school book/romance/suspense. But I am a Monica Murphy fan, so it was a must try. And I am so glad I did. This book had me hooked! It was full of suspense, twists and secrets being revealed.

Billie Vance has not had the easiest life growing up with her alcoholic mother. She lives in the states and her father and sister live in England. When things get bad and her sister ends up in a coma, she can’t turn down her father’s offer to come stay with him and help find out who hurt her.

In England she is Belinda and no one can know she is Islas sister at Wickham Academy. She has to do whatever it takes to find the answers before it is too late. I was on the edge of my seat, dying to know who was responsible. Every time I had a suspect, I was wrong. And the secrets and twists just kept coming. But I am so glad she found Connor. He really softened her and showed her what it was like to be happy and loved. It was so sweet. And I loved her stepmom Whitney. I think England is just what Billie needed to be happy and whole.

This was good! And I was blown away when I saw this cute little guy was a mystery/thriller/drama! The unfolding of who pushed Isla and Emily was insane, as was all the secret background history of the families. All the drama of this dang cliff too?! Omg! 💗

Literally pick it up. Read it. It’s such a fun easy read. Being in Billie’s mind 24/7 was so cool too! Monica even wrote it from the perspective of older teenager as well so it was really fun and realistic! 😂💖

I binged this in just a few hours! Totally loved and I didn't immediately guess what happened, so that was a welcome surprise. Usually I figure things out pretty early on, and it's kind of a bummer, but not the case here!

I will say this is marketed as a YA mystery / contemporary romance, and I often had to remind myself that these were teenagers still. It read as if they were older to me, and off at college, not a private school. There is a bit of steaminess going on and some sayings, but on the other hand, they're investigating an unaliving, so higher maturity is to be expected. It also starts with the FMC working in a bar, so that kinda throws you into thinking she's older. Billie (FMC) has had to face a lot of hardship with her mothers sobriety as well, and that is a very real and very hard thing to have to live with and will mature you much quicker so I understood it.

Not saying any of that is bad, just pointing out that it didn't feel very YA (to me personally)

I definitely recommend if you're looking for a bit of a slower mystery, but wholesome story overall.

Thank you to Entangled / Mayhem for the advance readers copy!

This was my first Monica Murphy book and it did not disappoint! I loved the dark academia setting and the murder mystery plot. I devoured this book in 24 hours. The writing had me hooked from chapter one, and was super fast paced.

Our FMC Billie fakes her identity at a boarding school in England to investigate her sister’s mysterious coma and accused crimes. The tension is heavy among the students. They all have secrets but which one is twisted enough to be a murderer.

This was such a great book! The ending had me, I never would have guessed what happened. I def recommend this one. This releases on March 3rd. Thank you to entangled publishing, net galley, and Monica Murphy for this arc!

If you love One of Us Is Lying vibes with a British twist, this is your next obsession. I was on the edge of my seat following Billie posing as Belinda as she infiltrated the ultra-elite Wickham Academy to save her sister. The secrets, the golden prince, the brooding outcast. It's a high-stakes game of "Who can you trust?" and the answer is usually no one. 🇬🇧🤐

#Review: *A Thousand Perfect Lies* - Monica Murphy - ARC [16+]
4.9/5✨
1/5🌶️

Billie Vale shouldn't exist anymore from the moment she stepped into the Wickham Academy. Belinda Winters was her new name and she had one thing in her mind: to find the culprit who got her sister into a coma. And she needed that to save her entire troubled family, not only her sister.

Even though it had a single point of view, from Billie's perspective, this story was super captivating because of all that mystery behind the death of a girl and the reason why her own sister was in a coma. Billie's job was pretty hard because everyone was hiding so many secrets, but I loved how persistent, intelligent and how insightful she was. Billie really wanted to uncover that mystery, but along way she found some truly amazing people, who played such a huge role in all of this craziness. We had handsome Connor, who stole her attention even from the start and sweet Sophia, who was outcasted by the other students, just because she was the headmaster's daughter. I loved their connection and how much they helped Billie, even if it was indirectly, not knowing the real reason she was present there and her true identity.

This was the first time when I read this type of genre written by Monica and it truly impressed me. I like this side of her stories, being completely different from what I was used to read by her. I was entranced by this entangled story and I was so curious to see who was the one responsible for everything. Of course that I was surprised, because almost everyone was hiding something and anyone could have been the one who did it.

Thank you so, so much Valentine Pr and Monica for this amazing e-ARC. I literally devoured it! 🥰

Different

This book is different from what she has recently been publishing so I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I do have mixed feelings about it but what I liked most was the suspense element to it. Billie is asked to go to England to help catch her sister's attempted killer. Problem is, she has to take on a new identity that's so foreign to her, she doesn't know what to think. She also can't let anyone know who she is related And she has a two week time period. While trying to unravel the secrets of Wickham Academy, she discovers some regarding her own family.

Thank you so much Monica Murphy and valentine PR for allowing me to read this arc. This was my first Monica Murphy book and let me tell you what I really enjoy ya thrillers more than I thought I did. I binge this book in one day. It was so good. This book kept me guessing the ending and typically I can guess the ending on most books.the writing had me hooked on chapter one!!

Billie fakes her identity at a boarding school. her sister is in a coma and cannot explain what happened so it is up to Billie to find out what happened!

This book gave me advise a pretty little liars and gossip girl which was my favorite shows to binge watch but comes out March 3 check it out definitely worth it!!!

Loved this one! Billie "becomes" Belinda and goes to see her sister, Isla who's in a coma. If she awakens she'll be charged with murder in two weeks. Apparently she pushed her best friend, off a cliff to her death. So she enrolls in the school Isla had gone to, hoping to find out the truth. But what she discovers is so much more than she expected as there's a hierarchy, secrets, lies, and so much more! Plan on staying up late with this one!

I really enjoyed this one, it did take a little bit of getting use to as this is different from her other work. I definitely wasn't expecting it to take the turn that it did, but I was so happy that the characters got their happy ending. The writing flowed really nicely and keeps you eager to find out more, with the perfect tension filled moments. The characters were interesting, you wouldn't expect them to match as well as they do, as they are very different from each other but then again in some ways they feel similar.

Thank you to Valentine PR and Monica Murphy for this advanced reader copy!

Billie gets a call out of the blue from her estranged father. He needs her to fake her identity at a boarding school to investigate her sister’s accidents and accused crimes. There are lots of secrets and tension throughout the book.

I was immediately sucked in. I loved that it kept me guessing right until the end. I binged this in two days! This was my first Monica Murphy book and I was not disappointed.
