The Damorleia Chronicles #2

VATHIA: The Damorleia Chronicles

Rate this book
My memories have been stolen from me and my past comes soaring in, ready to flip my life upside down. At least with my eyeball obsessed familiar and secretive bonded dragon, I don't have to face everything alone.

Everything I was told is a lie… or is it? Only time will tell, but I fear there's not enough as the metaphorical clock ticks. We barely escaped the skirmish that happened at Phixmery and now our true enemies are closing in, but so are the males that surround me. They want me and I think I want them too. No, not think. I need them. The fates have tied us together since the beginning. The bonds are supposed to make us stronger but each of us are a bit more shattered than we were all those years ago. I might crumble under the destiny that waits for me.

Will I be ready to step onto the battlefield to right the wrongs that were made? Will I be able to live up to the high expectations of my magick now that I have full access to my Gallalous ancestry or will I succumb like I was supposed to all those years ago?

The Damorleia Chronicles is a Why Choose fantasy enemies to lovers 18+ romance. Meaning that the FMC doesn't need to choose between her men. There are some dark themes within these pages, so please check the trigger warnings.

I was really looking forward to this book as I really liked the main character and her familiar, Nero, in the first book. The plot was promising, and it felt like all the main characters were becoming well developed and fleshed out characters. That completely falls apart in this book. When I read the other series by this author (I could not finish), she did the same thing where everything felt extremely rushed. The characters basically barely knew each other and were obsessed with each other. I felt the first book in this series did start some slow burn and plot, but it went completely off the rails in this book. Ravina got her memories back and then they basically all acted like they knew each other again. The mating and relationships were super rushed. I feel the main characters barely know each other at all and were saying they loved each other. I don't think I can move forward with this series as the characters and plot were not well done at all. I am bummed out as I really liked the first book.

I loved book one, even though we’ve seen a very similar storyline (a pretty well know dragon rider military academy storyline) but this book went down hill and QUICKLY.

We pick up right where book 1 leaves off, but the moment we leave the action, we barely see action ever again. I appreciated getting to know the early relationships for the main characters, but I did not appreciate the way they unfolded towards 50% in. I hated the fact that the plot was still non existent even at the halfway point!

(Slight spoiler)

Major eye roll when the fmc gains her memory back, it’s as if her and the guys have never missed a a beat with each other. I honestly don’t believe that the fmc knew the males that well when she was only 6. Honestly, how many memories can you recall from when you were 6 years old? It’s been 20 years, you still don’t know them.

Since this series is a Why Choose, I knew the spice would build. But I was truly let down when each spicy scene unfolded. They were exactly the same set up as every male before. I was almost bored reading every scene because it was like I was reading the same scene on repeat.

I can never understand why some readers think mediocre books are gold.

No words. Only incoherent screaming...
To say I loved this book would be a gross understatement.
The tension? The ANGST? Off the charts.
I kicked my feet, screamed, and swooned until I was a puddle.
The chaos? It's chaos-ing.
The romance? Turned up the HEAT!
I can't stress how much I love that this is a why choose because I COULD NOT choose just one MMC.
The growth? The found family? Top freaking tier!
Book 2 picks up right where the cliffhanger in Book 1 ends and takes you on an adventure.
Vasari? My new spirit animal.

Seriously. Go pick up this series. You will NOT be disappointed.

Overall I think this was just kinda “okay.”

There’s things I’ve enjoyed about this series so far, and some things I don’t fully care for as well. I think the intimacy and romance/relationship pacing is a little off for me, and frankly kinda boring. I also 100% predicted

My favourite character is Jesper I think, but I want to know more about Killian. I think the dynamics between Nero & her dragon really remind me of Andarna & Tairn from Fourth Wing, so if you love that bratty banter - this may be a fun read for you!

If I’m being honest, I almost DNF’d multiple times throughout this book, even towards the end. I just wasn’t invested in the characters and plot as much, but I don’t fully understand why…

I’m not sure if I’ll read book 3 when it releases, even though my brain hates open-ended series lol

First off, this book gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and I WISH I could take a star away with the amount of MENTAL AGONY this book’s ending has me in but if I could I would give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

SE made me FEEL every emotion that Rav, Jesper, Aemon, Talyn, and Killian were experiencing and I want to (lovingly) whack her on the head for the secondhand emotional turmoil I experienced at times

Vathia is fast paced and is next to impossible to put down! And now that I’ve been FORCED TO because SOMEONE (looking at you SE) ended the book on a MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER, I’m forced to MOPE ABOUT and WAIT for book 3.

SE, the end of this book has me reeling and I’m replaying, highlight reel style, Nero and Jesper’s humor on repeat to combat being mad at you🙃

I generally don't like books with fated mates. The story is always the same : As soon as they learn who their fated mate is, they skip the "getting to know each other" part. The characters just become obsessed or instantaneously in love with the other and usually loose a part of their personality in the process. This book does not differ from that trend. It is quite a shame because I did liked the first book.

“I think we need answers, and I’ve never known you to back down from a challenge. I’m here with you, and if they do anything to hurt you, we can take their eyeballs and leave. Maybe even take some toes as a road snack.”

Nero is definitely one of my favorite characters in this series. He's hilarious and his obsession with eyeballs never disappoints.

4⭐️ I just love this world and these characters so much. Cause wym a princess who’s kept her identity hidden is forced to attend a war college where she meets her fated mates!! PLUS, there’s dragons… ugh, it ate in the first book & this book picked up right where book 1 ended and I fear i was SAT the entire time. I love how Ravina is coming into her own and I just loveeee the progression of the bond between her and her mates. But, i think my fav character is her sassy familiar Nero and his need for eyeballs LMAOOOO.

Time to wait for book 3🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏽‍♀️

"I would burn the world for you, my mate. My Queen."

Omg my heart. If I could give this infinity stars, I would. I had the amazing opportunity to beta read this (my first time!!) and I was OBSESSED. This is the fastest I've ever read a book.

The book picks off where we left off in Phixmery and dives right into the action immediately. We get the details we couldn't see in Phixmery and learn so much more about everything. We see the other sides of the guys! Rav's growth! More of our favorite found family!

This book had me laughing, blushing, anxious, mad, crying, and everything in between. We love how they all ask for consent. We love the found family. The banter. The sibling bickering. And Nero!!

Hiiiiiighly recommend this book AND author if you haven't read any of her books yet.

3* purely because I found book 1 interesting.

I was bored and annoyed. Ravina absolutely was milking the whole memory thing. It make me want to yell "snap out of it girl".

They have a war to prepare for but there they all are, sitting ducks.

I went away, read other books, came back and just thought nope enough. It's like the lacklustre phenomenon of the 2nd and 3rd books is spreading.

This book also needs editing.

Reed book 1 not even a week before this and it was a predictably enjoyable read - but as I mentioned in that review, I think a large part of me enjoying that story was also because I was in a slight slump, and the FMC was actually very credible for once.

As I also mentioned, if I was coming off the heels of perhaps a more mind blowing read, then the book might not have been as enjoyable; and I am not afraid to say that I think that exact exact scenario has impacted my experience now with this second book.

I’m not sure how to best describe it, but this book has the makings to be good, but it honestly just ended up being ‘OK’ (for me). Depending on where you are when you finally encounter this book - whether you’re in a slump / just left one or if you’re in a pallet cleanse and switching genres, or you don’t read these types of stories too often – I think any and all of that affects how you will interact with this ‘enjoyably predictable’ story.

Without giving any spoilers, honestly, the book just felt a little repetitive at many points, especially with the decided conflict between the FMC and one of her males. There were also lots of small / odd time jumps and at many points I especially felt like we were being ‘told’ the story, vs shown / experiencing the story ourselves.

Additionally, I can only speak for myself, but for me, the spice was not delivering. And I’m not saying that it was written poorly, or it was too lukewarm or vanilla, those aren’t my comments at all. However, for some reason, it just landed very flat for me. I didn’t particularly care for those scenes and sort of sped my way through them, as I wasn’t really feeling anything from the literature. I think I just struggle connecting with characters who go from zero to 60 with the sexy time antics lol. Without any other sort of previous experience to anchor back to, it just gets a little hard to suspend disbelief, and the build up / scenes themselves just didn’t feel as natural and charismatic. And I have no probs when mate bonds / implied insta love - this just wasn’t hitting for me this time around *shrug*

But yeah, like I said in my book 1 review, there were some pretty massive bread crumbs in the story as well, you can sort of piece together what some of these plot twist will be. At least I know I did! That doesn’t make it unenjoyable, I just did not find myself quite as engaged or enraptured as I was with book one.

That said when book 3 does make its way out into the world, I do think I will continue the story. But this one just wasn’t as entertaining for me as the previous installment.

Ravina has been exposed to the academy as a royal from the moment she flew in with the queen of dragons. With the Lords now hunting her down, she has no option but to flee with her mates to Vathia, to recoup and plan for how she should retrieve her memories, and the throne her family lost.

*****

I've been waiting for this book for AGES and it didn't disappoint. Ravina ended the last book falling from her dragon with a burning bond snapping into place, and we start this one from the same moment. Witnessing how each lead comes to terms with the bonds, their acceptance or denial, and the trauma accompanying them getting to that point was fantastic.

I loved that we got a bit more back story of a few of the MC's, and slowly worked through how they've been functioning in the years since the royal family was lost to the realm. I loved that although there was slow progression in the story, we didn't sit in inaction for long moments. There was constant momentum that kept the pace moving forward, even though a lot of the novel was mostly based in Vathia.

This one ends on a cliffhanger similar to the last, so be prepared for some unexpected but anticipated twists before what should be the final book comes out next year.

*****

Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I have all the same issues with this book as the last, and I am not sure if I'll be continuing but we shall see.

spoilers.

Alright. I have the same complaint. Nothing seems to happen in this book. it's the battle prep all over again and no movement again until the last 3 pages. Which if that is your thing great, I just found myself wanting to skip ahead and get to the plot.

She mates with two of her mates this book thank God, because barely having conversations in the last book was driving me mad.

overall not a bad book, just is not keeping me hooked. There isn't enough smut to outweigh the lack of plot. Honestly if it wasn't for the few sex scenes we get this is a YA story with YA miscommunication and talking with her friends about what to do with "boys". She is 27 my friends, not 18.

meh

the book one was interesting enough for me to want to try book 2 … but … like in the first book … for a bunch of people in their mid to late twenties they’re all very immature emotionally and mentally… guessing was hoping for character development in book 2 …. it would have been more believable if the characters had been in their late teens which would justify their behaviour … especially the guys who despite having 4 years of “military” training are remarkably inept of strategic thinking

and i really didn’t understand how the FMC … who had been abused and tortured for years … had zero spatial awareness of her surroundings … and after reading one and half books i still didn’t feel like i “knew” her 🤷🏻‍♀️

still there will be lots of readers who will not notice any of that and will enjoy this series … just not me

I laughed. I cried. I wanted to strangle one of my MMCs for being so stubborn.

You have multiple fated mates (my ALL TIME favorite trope), FMC stepping into her power, the best familiar in fantasy (and his eyeball collection), and as much dark humor as you can take.

This book was dark, fantastical, and so engaging. (I was up until 5AM finishing it.)

It was a perfect sequel to Phixmery, and I cannot wait for book three!!

This booked pulled me right back into the world I fell in love with in Phixmery. The story picks up right where we left off and wastes no time diving into the action. Ravina continues to be the kind of FMC you can’t help but root for. She’s strong, clever, and constantly evolving, and I loved getting to see more sides of the guys this time around. The banter, the found family dynamics and of course Nero (who once again completely steals the show) made this such a fun, emotional read. The ending left me reeling all over again and now I’m counting down the days until book three.

So lucky to have received this as an ARC.

After reading Phixmery, I could not wait to get my hands on Vathia. Vathia picks up right where everything left off, we see each character begin to develop more and begin to grow especially Ravina. I was so excited to get to see more of the romance unfold. (I’ll always be a sucker for the romance plot-line) The yearning and angst in those scenes were jaw dropping. Each character has something going on deeper within themselves and the small peaks at those we got were masterfully written. Nero is still my favorite character, i am beyond obsessed with our favorite raven familiar. I cant wait to see where book 3 will go with the story especially after that CLIFFHANGER!?!? I needed more, I was not ready for the book to be done.

Thank you so much to S.E. Alexander again, for the Advanced Reader Copy of Vathia that I received. This review is composed only of my thoughts and opinions alone.

NOOOOOOO FREAKING CLIFFHANGERS!!! I sped through this book too fast and I’m mad at myself because now the third book isn’t out and aghhhhh.

I’m SO happy that Ravina and Talyn made progress, and I am sooo ready for Talyn and Killian to learn about her scars. I’m very happy with the slower burn for them, while also still having Jesper and Aemon to fall back on.

I am seriously so excited to see where this goes, and while I’m not super surprised by the cliffhanger, it still is something I’m like happy and sad and everything about..all for Ravina’s sake.

Mannn I need the next book, now!

Sped through this one as quickly as the last even knowing that it would end in a cliffhanger with no publication date for the third book…

I’m not usually a “good girl” kinda girl but somehow it’s working for me in this book. And also somehow the alpha male crap is balanced with enough being a simp for her that I actually like it, or don’t mind it at least. And I’ve really come to like Jasper. He’s not as crazy in this book as he was in the first.

Tropes:
✨ Found Family
✨ Why Choose Romance
✨ Stabby FMC
✨ Shadow Daddy

I don’t even know where to begin. This book was good. This is not a standalone, so you need to read Phixmery before you read Vathia.

There was so much more everything in this book and I was 1,000% here for it. There’s more action, more romance, and more character development.

These characters. You’re gonna really love some of them, and really hate some of them. But the thing I loved is that we get to know and understand the characters better.

And that ending! I swear S.E. Alexander is the queen of cliffhangers. I can’t wait for the next book and to see how everything is going to play out.

Vathia by S.E. Alexander is absolutely breathtaking!

I'm left speechless and reeling from yet another cliffhanger. After devouring Phixmery, I immediately dove into Vathia and now I'm impatiently waiting for the third book. This series has easily made it into my top 5. S.E. Alexander has created a world that is immersive and characters that are captivating, and my love for Nero has only intensified!
Seriously, who wouldn't want a Nero in their life?

✨ARC Review✨
This is the second book in the Damorleia Chronicles, and while the first book was addictive with its action, intense storyline and slow burn why choose romance, Vathia is something to absolutely salivate over. I literally finished this book in one sitting, it was just that good. It picks up right where Phixmery left us with a brutal cliffhanger. It’s revealed there’s a Gallalaus fae with a purple dragon, fae that were supposed to be extinct, but the Lords still don’t know who Ravina actually is. It is during the battle that the mating bonds between Ravina and Talyn, Aemon, Jesper and Killian form. Fated mates were supposedly nonexistent anymore, but at the time Ravina’s mother ruled she had four fated mates as male consorts. It was considered the norm for the queen.

Once they all arrive in Vathia, Aemon’s land, it becomes time for Ravina to regain her memories, decide how to deal with the news of having mates, and figure out whether or not she is ready or even willing to become queen. The fight against the lords has been ongoing, but now that her memories are back, the war for Damorleia has truly begun. If you haven’t started this series you need to immediately! #whychoose #fatedmates #foundfamily #allthebanter #sassyravenfamiliar #unhingedmmcs #dragonriders #mfmmm #opendoorromance #hefallsfirstandharder

I loved Phixmery and I was so excited to continue the adventure in Vathia, and it did not disappoint. This book picks up right where Phixmery left off, the nonstop action begins, and everything starts to slowly unfold. We get to see the growth of all the characters throughout and learn more of their secrets. Each one has their own grief and insecurities, and each one has their own way of working through it. The world building continues to be immersive, and the magic system unfolds more. There are layers of the story that intertwine and give everything more depth and development. Some of the questions from Vathia are answered but there is still more hopefully to be revealed. I love the strong relationships and fierce friendships with the characters. There are more dragons and of course more of my favorite character Nero, still just as sassy as ever. There were so many feelings felt throughout this book, and I can’t recommend it enough. This book also ends on a cliffhanger, and I’m so excited to see what happens next!

Thank you so much to the author for an advanced reader copy. All thoughts are my own.

“Jesper is staring at me with hungry eyes and I think I just became his next meal.” - Ravina

🌶️🌶️/5

Loved:
A why-choose with depth, rather than insta-love
Fated mates
Reluctant chosen one
Sassy dragons and a raven familiar
I beta read this book and some of the relationships were enriched in the final version

Didn’t Love:
There’s something about the writing in this one that feels undeveloped to me, and it wasn’t present in Phixmery. Not sure at all what it is, but that’s my gut reaction.
My poor Talyn.
That f*k!ing cliffhanger (although I had a hunch)
