This is the fourth book in the Legacy of Highland Lairds series. Unfortunately, I haven't yet read the previous books, but I will go back and read them. Therefore, I am not sure if I have missed any background on the characters and other clans involved in the book. This, however, didn't stop my enjoyment. I just know from the author's other works that she tends to mention characters from other books throughout her series.
Trying to escape torture or worse, Olivia and her Mother, Kathleen, are running to escape their clan, who have turned on them, when they are separated. Olivia manages to get away, only to be pulled out of the water by her worst enemy, the laird responsible for killing her father and Brother and putting them in this predicament. To keep her safe, he insists the pair start pretending to be betrothed. But it becomes quite apparent that it might not be just pretend.
I enjoy the author's writing style and the banter she creates between her main characters. Arthur and Olivia were a great match, and their constant rivalry and witty comebacks had me turning the pages. Whilst it is not a bodice ripper per se, there are enough steamy moments as their relationship blooms to keep the reader entertained.
