The Laughing Matter
When Evan Nazarenus returns from a teaching post at the summer school in Nebraska, he cannot wait for a couple of blissful weeks spent with his wife and two children in Clovis, a small town where his brother has a summer house. But soon after they arrive for the long awaited holiday, Swan, Evan's wife, announces that she is expecting a child … who is not fathered by Evan. This news shocks and hurts Evan deeply, but for his children's sake he decides to keep it to himself through the holidays they dreamt of for so long. Cu un titlu amuzant, romanul lui William Saroyan ascunde totuși tragedia unei familii americane, pusă în fața unor secrete și a unor decizii importante, care pot duce cu ușurință la destrămare.
După ce ea îl înșeală și rămâne însărcinată cu un coleg de serviciu de-al lui, aflați undeva la țară, la o fermă, trebuie să treacă într-un fel de asta, măcar pentru fericirea viitoare a celor doi copii (foarte isteți, foarte curioși, cei doi copii susțin de fapt frumusețea acestui roman). Să fie un divorț, să fie un avort, să fie o crimă?
Întrebări care se pun, într-un roman destul de ok, care surprinde plăcut mai mult prin personaje decât prin situațiile descrise, întâlnite mereu în viață și în ficțiune.

Mi-a placut. Am empatizat cu el, cu ea, cu fiecare dintre copii. Am trait ceva din propria copilarie.
Am inteles de ce merita sa te dedici propriei familii daca ti-ai luat acest angajament. Am inteles ca trebuie sa faci compromisuri, sa ierti si sa iubesti. Ca trebuie sa tii cont in permanenta de tot angrenajul familial din care faci parte atunci cand decizi sa pleci sau sa renunti la drum pentru a umple propriu spleen sau gol.

Wow, I should have expected this book to be a tragedy. All that contained sadness, longing, the way Saroyan refers to the characters, “the man” “the woman” “the child”, all the fear, the loneliness. The parents are fearful, the children are fearful. Everyone wants something they seem to have, but are afraid of losing it.
And it’s all about the family. About having one, and then keeping it. About being cursed. Well, call me blind, I knew there was to be something awful, but not as much as it was.
Still I like the way it builds up, I like the whole “something really really bad is going to happen, you just watch” thing. Because I think having the presence of that in the book makes it tense, and envolving. I like the mystery in the characters, the whole “speak the language”(I suppose it was armenian? Like the author?), the bad luck, the fated and the cursed, the inevitability. The will to have a good life, but the fact that it is impossible.
Like I said, a tragedy. Not the Hardy style tragedy. But a 50’s tragedy set in the california vineyards.
First book I have read by Saroyan, I am sure to read some more.

In nici 200 de pagini, Saroyan livreaza o mostra de scriere exceptionala, o drama domestica ce aparent fierbe la foc mic, dar de fapt se dezlantuie exploziv. "Ce-am mai ras!" este un volum teribil de dureros, amar insa plin de viata, in care empatia cititorului nu vine decat dublata de ultima neputinta: cu alte cuvinte, o capodopera in mic. 4,9/5

It is good for a writer to act the way that will most effectively give the impression that hi is a good writer. I think I am potentially a great writer. I also think I am a bum.

There is no way to read Saroyan without delight. I've recently purchased this novel from Amazon. It has arrived from the New York, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library. I hope there are still available other copies of the book in the library. Otherwise, I'd felt myself an offender for selfishly purchasing that book from the library.
About the edition: Both paper quality and font sizes were excellent. It was published in 1953 and, having been read by many readers, retained its freshness. By the way, reading books with such a 'history' is another pleasure.
About the novel: from the title, it looks like a light, fun, maybe even just everyday family drama. But, as usual, behind Saroyan's simple English stands a deeper meaning. I do not want to spoil it, but have to mention that the novel is rich in different emotions, and Saroyan gradually leads them into 'dark'.
In a word, the book that you should take to the countryside and read under the fig tree. (But, before going to the countryside, better not to take the family with :) )
P.S. I hope this one will also be translated in Armenian soon and more readers will have a chance to know the story of Red and Eva.

La început mi s-a părut plictisitoare. Chiar mă gândeam dacă are sens să mai continui sau mai bine mă apuc de alta mai faină, dar încăpățânată fiind, evident că am continuat. Și ghici ce? De pe la mijlocul cărții, am rămas mută. La propriu. Prietenul meu mă întreba de câteva minute ce fel de ceai vreau, iar eu nu îl auzeam. Și nu îi răspundeam. Pentru că nu voiam să ies din poveste. Pentru că vroiam să mă lase toată lumea in pace să citesc. Da. Sunt antisociabilă când îmi place o carte.
Evan și Swan. Și copiii lor, Red și Eva. Ei sunt protagoniștii acestei cărți. Toți sunt în vacanța la casa fratelui lui Evan. Sunt o familie obișnuită. Totul pare normal până când în ziua în care ajung la casa de vacanță Swan îi mărturisește lui Evan că este însărcinată, însă copilul nu este al lui.
Oare tu cum ai reacționa dacă ai fi într-o astfel de situație? Ce ai face? Ce ai face dacă ai fi în locul lui Swan?
Întrebările sunt prea puține și prea superficiale pentru situația dată. Saroyan reușește prin mult dialog și mai puțină descriere să ne facă să simțim disperarea, durerea și sentimentele contradictorii ale lui Evan. Habar nu are ce să facă, habar nu are ce este bine și ce nu. Își iubește familia, însă orgoliul lui parcă nu îl lasă să ierte. Ar ierta, încearcă să meargă mai departe, să se prefacă în fața altora și mai ales în fața copiilor că totul este perfect, că nu s-a întâmplat nimic. Iar în tot acest timp el are inima sfâșiată de creierul care îi spune că nu este bine, că totul ar fi trebuit să fie diferit.
Swan, își dorește cu disperare să recâștige iubirea soțului și este dispusă să facă orice pentru asta. Chiar și un avort.
Oare cum ar fi fost mai bine să se procedeze? Ar fi fost mai bine ca Evan să renunțe la mândria lui și să crească copilul altui bărbat? Cine era acest bărbat? De ce tocmai el?
Ce viață ar fi fost aceea în care de fiecare dată, în fiecare zi ar fi fost cineva în jurul lui care să-i amintească de infidelitatea soției? Cum ar fi trăit? Ar fi fost în stare să păstreze secretul și să pretindă că totul este perfect?
Ce ar fi spus propriii copii dacă ar fi aflat?
Oare a fost bine cum a procedat?
Totul se întâmplă dintr-un accident? Sau facem noi în așa fel încât să ajungem cât mai aproape de nenorocire?
Sunt atâtea întrebări pe care ți le pui în timp ce citești acestă carte. Întrebări la care sigur vrei să îți oferi un răspuns. Să știi ce ar fi fost mai bine pentru tine. Să știi cum ai fi procedat tu.
Dar mai ales să înțelegi că ar trebui să trăiești în așa fel încât să nu ajungi niciodată în locul lui Swan. Să nu înșeli. În zilele noastre în care totul se rezumă la sex, fund, sâni și multe alte lucruri obscene, este greu, aș îndrăzni să spun aproape imposibil să trăim așa. Însă în momentul în care facem o astfel de greșeală trebuie să ne asumăm atât durerea provocată celui de lângă noi, cât și durerea noastră.
Un posibil deznodământ într-o situație de infidelitate este prezentată în cartea lui Saroyan. Cei care vor suferi cel mai mult sunt cei mai inocenți.
Chiar dacă motto-ul actual tinde spre: “Mă voi lăsa dus de val și vedem ce se va întâmpla!”, eu spun așa: înainte de orice, haideți să ne punem întrebarea: Merită?
Saroyan m-a lăsat mută. M-a făcut să simt durerea lui Evan. Durerea lui Swan. M-a lăsat să sper până în ultima clipa. M-a făcut să zâmbesc când citeam cum cei doi încercau din răsputeri să prezinte totul ca și cum e perfect. Iar în clipa următoare mă arunca înapoi în locul întunecat de unde îmi dădeam seama că totul este degeaba. S-a jucat cu speranțele mele. S-a jucat cu dorința mea ca pedeapsa pentru cei doi să nu fie totuși mare.
Nu a fost atât de mare pentru ei.
Dar pentru cine a fost?

Saroyan must have been at a down point in his life, because this is by far the darkest book I've read from him. It's about trying to keep a family together after a betrayal. He never makes it clear how it's going to end, thankfully, because the end comes out of nowhere and is, in my opinion, completely ridiculous. I really liked this book, but I think it really falls apart in the last 20 pages, almost as if Saroyan said, "To hell with this story and these characters, I'm going to make THIS happen!" The rest of the book makes up for that, though, and makes it very much worth reading for Saroyan fans. As is the case with any of his books from the late 40s and 50s, any time his young children enter the picture greatness ensues. His son and daughter are so completely lovable, and he writes about them perfectly. The light parts of the book (of which there are many) reminded me a lot of One Day in the Afternoon of the World or Papa, You're Crazy. Those are better books, overall, but this one's a winner, too.
A few years ago, Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev made a great movie based on this novel. In English it's called The Banishment, and it's definitely worth seeking out!

Si en esta historia buscas, como reza el título, la risa, no la vas a encontrar por ningún lado. La trama empieza con la familia de Evan Nazarenus llegando a Clovis, California, para pasar unos días en el viñedo del hermano de Evan. Al poco de llegar, Swan, la mujer de Evan, le revela un secreto con el que no puede más, y es entonces cuando todo cambia. La tragedia sobrevuela toda la novela. La historia va dando tumbos hasta un final inesperado que no me ha gustado nada. Como tampoco me han gustado muchos de los pasajes de la novela, de vergüenza ajena hasta el sonrojo.
Pero las páginas finales, sobre todo, son lo peor. Parece como si Saroyan, con ese final con moraleja, quisiera aleccionarte para que te conformes con las cartas que te ha repartido la vida y hagas frente al destino, porque como intentes cambiarlo, estás jodido.
Sin duda, prefiero 'La comedia humana' a esta otra novela.
Pero las páginas finales, sobre todo, son lo peor. Parece como si Saroyan, con ese final con moraleja, quisiera aleccionarte para que te conformes con las cartas que te ha repartido la vida y hagas frente al destino, porque como intentes cambiarlo, estás jodido.

Una pequeña tragedia de Eurípides, de Shakespeare ubicada en California a mediados del siglo XX. Precioso y trágico sin abusar del recurso y sin necesidad de ser épico o bíblico como William Faulkner o John Steinbeck. La prosa de Saroyan se desangra por el lado de Carson Mc Cullers pero con la vitalidad de los beatniks. La novela, breve, veloz, es preciosa tanto desde sus paisajes (los viñedos de California en verano) como desde sus metáforas (la idea de "amar al sol" se vuelve una necesidad de todos).
Y detrás de todo ese paisaje hay una familia en su plenitud que se desgarra por dentro hacia un ocaso triste y tal vez inevitable. Saroyan, hijo de armenios, muestra que muchas veces no importa la distancia, la tragedia a veces no es morir como continuar con vida un día más.

Saroyan, reescribe parte de su infancia con un libro que pretende ser una fábula de la inmigración y la tragedia que supone el desarraigo. El título de la novela "Cosa de risa" se convierte en un chiste de humor negro. Los personajes están encadenados a su destino; la falta de confianza en sus personajes dan a la novela un tono gris y depresivo. Es una historia que causa desazón y si eso fue la infancia del autor, uno le compadece.

Impecable. Saroyan me llevó a la cima del disfrute, de la apreciación, de la reflexión, de la contemplación. Puede que sean muchos sinónimos, pero aún así comprendo a cada uno por un significado distinto, que al final hace una gran diferencia. Me encantó la impecable forma en la que Saroyan trata la tristeza, y la muerte, tan invasivo. No hay alguien que demuestre tanto amor, tanta comprensiones, por una fruta.

I can't figure out why this book seems to not exist on goodreads, but it was very good if you're into stories of utter disaster that are rife with dry laughs.

Not as good as I expected, but I still inexplicably liked this. I must say that I still prefer the film version, "the Banishment" by Zviagintsev.

A short novel with a title that makes you expect something funny to follow, despite its subtitle. But no, the whole story is a tragedy! Generated by adults who are not strong enough to take responsibility for their own actions and try somehow, with no success, to understand what happens to them and start to feel remorse and express love. As it usually happens, even in real life, when adults make serious mistakes, children are the ones who suffer the most. And when the characters finally decide to try and make things better, for them and the kids, a series of accidents occur and everything collapses. Adults die and the children are left with some strangers apparently more capable of offering them the love they need.
Most of action is set in nice surroundings, a small town, at a beautiful house with a vineyard and a fig tree which everyone enjoy.
The novel is well written in Saroyan's style. I've read some of his books when I was young and I enjoyed them but, frankly, this one is much too grim for my taste, similar to a Greek tragedy when it's almost impossible to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I know that life can be like that sometimes. But I'm not like that and although I know this, I prefer to look at the bright side of life.

به قدری سارویان در خلق فضایی که ایجاد میکنه موفق هست که به راحتی میتونین خودتون رو در اون صحنه احساس کنید و با چشمان خودتون شاهد رویدادن اتفاق ها باشین.
اخلاق و مرز اخلاق گرایی در دل یک خانواده به ظاهر نرمال تبدیل به عملی میشه که در نهایت حتی خون هم اون رو نمیشوره.
یکی از توانایی های سارویان خلق دیالوگ های پر قدرت و منقطع دو نفره است.اینکه میتونه با تک جملات در بین مکالمه شما رو میخکوب کنه.
ترجمه میتونست کمی بهتر و روون تر باشه گاهی جلوی ریتم رو میگیره و با زبان نویسنده هماهنگ نیست.البته به خاطر موضوع داستان و احتمالا سانسورهای انجام شده تحمیلی ،این حس ناموزونی گاهی به مخاطب دست میده.
سال ۲۰۰۷ یک فیلمساز روس اقتباسی از این داستان رو به فیلم تبدیل کرد که اون فیلم هم فیلم خیلی خوبی بود و البته اون اثر بیشتر یک برداشت بود تا اقتباس خط به خط.به شدت هم با زیبایی هر چه تمام تر اون فیلمساز فیلم و داستان کتاب رو مال خود کرده بود و به جای داستان آمریکایی کتاب ،یک داستان تماما روسی تحویل بیننده میداد.
انقدر قلم سارویان خوب بود که مشتاق شدم هر چه زودتر بقیه کتاب هاشو هم بخونم.

🧩 Contrastul dintre modul în care adulții văd viața și modul în care copiii abordează realitatea prezintă unghiuri complementare ale vieții de zi cu zi. Naivitatea și curiozitatea lor, felul în care relaționează, simt și pun întrebări, ne face să ne gândim că ei sunt sinceri spectatori ai vieții, iar noi - actorii emoționați la un casting.
🧩 "Ești prea mic. Înțelegi când crești." este doar o capcană. Felul în care, mai ales Red, percepe și integrează mesajul desconsideră capacitatea de înțelegere și gradul de toleranță al adulților.

🧩 Contrastul dintre modul în care adulții văd viața și modul în care copiii abordează realitatea prezintă unghiuri complementare ale vieții de zi cu zi. Naivitatea și curiozitatea lor, felul în care relaționează, simt și pun întrebări, ne face să ne gândim că ei sunt sinceri spectatori ai vieții, iar noi - actorii emoționați la un casting.
