In 1954 Dorothea Lange set out to capture Ireland with her camera. Particularly she wanted to show that connection between humanity and the land that she felt had been wiped out in much of the US after the Depression. These photos have a very different feel from her famous ones documenting migrant workers in the 1930’s. They are of a different place, a different time. Amazing photographs and the writing by her son and Gerry Mullins quite good. The book was published in 1998, but the photographs are from 1954. Compare to Jill Freedman's A Time That Was,Irish Moments, that was shot in the early 1970's.

There is a photograph of Dorothea herself out in a field with her graflex camera, age about 59, looking about 70. She was a semi-cripple and not in good health, but the project she tackled involved a lot of physical strength and endurance, and she was relentless

I'm rating this from a photographer's point of view. Dorothea Lange told such a compelling story of the American depression through her photos, and I did not get the same vision from this book.

Dorothea Lange was an influential American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the tragic consequences of the Great Depression and profoundly influenced the development of documentary photography.
