Terri Sabol’s Know It Owl series continues to delight young readers with a perfect blend of curiosity and knowledge. In The Know It Owl and the Beluga, illustrated by Paula Piechna, children are invited on a journey to the icy Arctic seas where one of nature’s most fascinating creatures awaits: the beluga whale.
The story follows the inquisitive Know It Owl as it seeks answers about this unique marine mammal. Through lively dialogue and engaging facts, young readers discover what makes belugas so remarkable — their white coloring, their playful communication, and the ways they adapt to their chilly environment. The owl’s natural curiosity mirrors that of children, encouraging them to keep asking “why” and “how” as they read.
Paula Piechna’s illustrations capture the Arctic beautifully, with cool tones of sea and ice providing the backdrop for both owl and whale. The beluga is drawn with warmth and detail, making the facts presented in the text more memorable and visually striking.
What sets this book apart is its ability to teach without ever feeling heavy. The learning is woven seamlessly into the story, offering just enough depth to satisfy curious minds while keeping the narrative light and fun. The Know It Owl and the Beluga, written by Terri Sabol and illustrated by Paula Piechna, is such a fun read. The book has two main characters, the beluga whale and the owl. The beluga whale begins by telling a fact about itself that is not true. The know it owl follows up with what is true about the beluga whale. The banter back and forth throughout the book makes the characters fun and makes you want to keep reading. At the start of the book, the author uses a colored pencil to show readers how to measure the beluga whale. Then, in a couple of places in the book, the author shows the reader how many colored pencils it would take to measure something. This helps the reader understand the size of the beluga whale. The book also contains a few activities throughout that reinforce the information being given. There is also a page that includes a world map that shows where the beluga whale is located and an endangered species chart to show if the beluga whale is endangered or not. The final page of the book shows readers how to draw a beluga whale.
This book is really cute and so fun to read. I highly recommend it for all children and even adults who want to learn more about the beluga whale. I really enjoyed reading it. The illustrations are amazing and really add to the whimsy and fun of the book. It would be a fantastic addition to any classroom or school library as well!
The Know It Owl and the Beluga is not just a great addition to the series, but a book that can engage readers of all ages. Its captivating story and educational content make it a must-have for any library.
In this adventure, Owl corrects the misconceptions a young beluga whale has about its own species. As with all the previous books in the series, the vivid illustrations capture the reader's attention. Additionally, I learned some interesting facts about beluga whales that I didn't know. For instance, did you know Belugas can live up to 70 years? I found this story fascinating… In 1985, a few thousand beluga whales found themselves trapped in ice, and an icebreaker ship helped guide them out by playing classical music. That is incredible! These are just a few things I discovered about this fascinating animal.
The inclusion of educational games further enhances the value of this book. These games, such as the maze to help the Beluga reach the fish while collecting other types of food it eats, and the one that educates readers about their camouflage abilities, are not just fun but also a valuable learning tool.
As a fan of this series, I can't recommend it enough. Each book is a treasure trove of knowledge and a joy to read. Whether for a home library or a school collection, these books are a must-have!

Know It Owl and Beluga by Terri Sabol 5-Star Review Oh the tales this Beluga whale is telling. He has all of his facts confused and Owl is so frustrated with him. Beluga whales live in the Arctic cold and love to live in groups called pods. And even though they have a great smile, they actually swallow their food whole! Terri Sadol has added another informative, educational, and humor filled book to the Know It All Owl series. The characters are well drawn, have great personalities, and keep the attention for the kids that I have shared it with. The mazes and animal searches throughout the book are wonderful brain breaks for the little ones who are absorbing all of this scientific knowledge. Great book! Must be shared with the children in your life!
This series has become an absolute favorite in our household! My kids are a little older, one even out of the target audience range, but they both still love these books so much. I also love anything to do with the ocean, so we dove right into this one as soon as we could. Owl is always a welcomed return since he is so knowledgeable, but his catchy lines always stick with us. This time it’s, “What a tale, beluga whale” and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve already repeated it. The author expertly combines facts with a funny storyline that will entertain everyone. If you haven’t picked up any previous books in this series, don’t worry because they can all be read as standalones. I definitely recommend sharing these with the kiddos in your life. You’ll all have a blast!
In this book of the series, our clever feathered friend Know It Owl takes us on a fun learning adventure about the Beluga Whale. This book is filled with vibrant illustrations, fun facts, rhyming words and even a few games to keep little one’s attention. Know it Owl’s witty comments add humor along the way that will lead to some chuckles. For the older readers, like myself, you might be surprised by learning some things that you didn’t know about before! This is a fantastic pick for bedtime, nap time or any story time. Highly recommend for anyone who likes to sneak in some learning without it being known.
This is another fun read in The Know It Owl series. This time around, Owl is hanging out with tall telling beluga whale. Owl has to correct just about everything he says to the point that Owl knows Whale better than he does himself! Whale will present a "fact" that Owl quickly debunks for the truth.
Kids will love learning more about the beluga whale in this book. While it is fictional, there are some facts included. There is also a drawing activity, a "seek and find" activity and more. Kids will love the "snot fact" too!
A great read with wonderful full page pictures and awesome facts to go along. Couldn’t ask for more of a children’s book than whimsical animal characters with lively personalities, but this book has so much more. Whether you have a fascination for science or a kid who loved whales. This interactive picture book has fun features, searches and even a small maze. Every turn of the page was a fun fact and something interactive! It kept my three year old fully entertained and asking for more. Will definitely be a much loved family book in apart of a series!
Just another great story for our little ones to enjoy. I love how Owl never says anything negative. He just gives out positive facts which makes this story a treat to read. The author also added activities for the children to learn and follow along with. The pictures are spectacular and a child could read the story by themselves, just by reading the pictures. My grandchildren and I enjoy reading this author's books. So much to be learned in a fun way. Not to mention the conversation starters. A must have for all children's libraries.
This book was is another brilliant addition to this series and is another one we have thoroughly enjoyed. This time we are introduced to Beluga whale and get to learn more about him as the book goes on. Owl knows just what questions to ask to discover more information. This book is just an entertaining and engaging as the others. The illustrations bring it to life and make you connect with the characters all the more. Every book in this series we pick up is just as good as the others and we look forward to each new one. This was a great and fun read that I would highly recommend.
I Loved this book! Owl is so cute, little bit of sass and alot of knowledge! The phrases used as a response to Axolotl are fun and the perfect response!
I loved all the information and learned alot I did not know. I love that the author put such consideration into the research, providing information that includes if they make good pets, the animals level of being endangered amd things not known about these wonderful animals.

The Know It Owl and the Beluga is a cute and educational book that will have children laughing and learning! Beluga gives comical misinformation to the reader, while The Know It Owl gives the correct information. This book has interactive parts to it including I-spy and a maze. The end of the book gives "fast facts" and information about how the beluga whale is at the level of least concern in regrards to endangered animals. The final page of the book teaches the reader how to draw a beluga whale.
Another adorable addition to Terri Sabol’s Know It Owl series! This time, our wise little owl takes us under the sea to meet a beluga, and I loved how it balanced fun storytelling with educational nuggets. Belugas are such unique, playful creatures, and the book does a wonderful job of highlighting their characteristics in a way that feels both magical and easy for kids to understand. The illustrations are sweet and engaging. It's bright enough to capture the littles, I especially liked how the story mixed curiosity with gentle humor. Can't wait for more!!
The Know It Owl is back and today he is talking to a beluga whale, but beluga doesn't really know much about his species.
As they talk, beluga tells the facts as he knows them and Know It Owl responds with "What a tale, beluga whale!" It is then that he shares the facts he knows, and what a lot of them there are!
Beluga is amazed by everything the Know It Owl tells him, but do you know about beluga whales and can you solve the riddles within the book and learn more? This is another wonderful addition to this series of beautifully illustrated books.
This book is part of a series that is easy for children to read and will keep them interacting all the way through. In this book Owl visits with Beluga the Whale. The characters are fun, creative and bring their story to life in the colorful pages. They will keep your child asking questions throughout. Sabol and the owl are back with another installment in the Know-It-Owl series and this time it's about the Beluga Whale. I love the way these stories are set up…the banter between the owl and the animals, the amount of information Sabol provides her readers, and the illustrations are top notch. This is one of my favorite kids series and definitely one you need to have on your bookshelves. I can't wait to see what animal we are going to learn about next!
Wonderful lesson in getting to know the Beluga Whale. This is for an advanced reader or for an adult to read to younger kids as some of the words and terms will be too difficult for young children to understand. The illustrations are fantastic, and the knowledge and facts are fascinating. I never knew these things and now understand more about this wonderful whale. This is an amazing series of books and I am learning things I never knew.
Beautiful art, wonderful facts about beluga whales. I have to say when I hear the word whale, a beluga is not the first I would think of. It was really fun learning so many fun facts about beluga whales, especially that their skin fully turns white as they age so they can blend in with icebergs to stay away from predators, or that some of the sounds they make are imitations of other animals and sounds. The beluga whale has certainly moved up in my eyes as one of the most interesting animals.
The Know It Owl is a fun series and this time we learned about Belugas. I like that they focus on lesser known animals, and have fun activities within the pages. We learned tons about belugas, my favorite fact being they can swim backwards. Along with the typical drawing exercise, there was a maze and a find the beluga game. This book sparked a lot of fun and knowledge seeking for both my boys (9 and 13) and we proceeded to google more about these amazing animals.
This author does such an amazing job of creating books that help kids to learn. The books are simple and easy for kids to understand. I like how the author is able to take kids on an adventure and help them to digest information. The subject matter is broken down and made enjoyable for kids to want to learn. With the creative owl narrator of sorts the kids imagination is grabbed and a fun world of learning is opened.
Another cute story full of interesting information about the beluga whale. I really enjoy this series of children’s books because not only are the stories fun, but it provides a learning experience for children. They are able to read and learn about the different animals in the world while enjoying a great story. I enjoyed learning about the beluga whale in this book and I recommend it to anyone who has children that want to read and learn new things.
This is the 6th book in The Know It Owl Series. In this book, we learn about the Beluga Whale. Of course, the beluga whales' facts are not correct, but The Know It Owl is happy to correct. We learn facts about the beluga whale and also have some activities to do in the back of the book. The illustrations are fantastic as with the other books in this series, and I have really enjoyed reading all of these books and learning about the different animals.
The Know It Owl series has quickly become a favorite of mine because it makes learning so much fun. In this story, Owl pays a visit to Beluga Whale, who’s a big sports fan but has some of his facts mixed up. I couldn’t help but smile when Owl teased him with, “What a tale, Beluga Whale,” before setting the record straight.
What makes these books so special is how interactive they feel. When I read them with kids, they love taking on the voices—sometimes I get to be the sarcastic but wise Owl, while they jump right into the role of the curious animal. The illustrations are beautiful, too, and really help bring the playful conversations to life while showing how misconceptions turn into real understanding!
