There is limited recorded history of the Brethren movement in the early 19th century. Jim Lehman made the most of the material that was available in order to describe Brethren life prior to the Civil War. In this very readable book, Lehman considers many areas of Brethren life and practice, including practices (Love Feast, Anointing, Holy Kiss, etc.), beliefs, conflicts, and distinctive leaders in Brethren communities. This is a great introductory text for readers interested in the development of the Brethren as well as some of the conflicts that existed that among the Brethren at this time.
Important information about the Old Brethren in the 1840s and 1850s, a period of great change in the church. I learned a lot about the important of fellowship in the ordinances that bind them together beginning with baptism, the love feast, the right hand of friendship, the kiss of peace, and the leadership hierarchy.
