About the author

Alexander McCall Smith is the author of the international phenomenon The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, the Isabel Dalhousie Series, the Portuguese Irregular Verbs series, and the 44 Scotland Street series. He is professor emeritus of medical law at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and has served on many national and international bodies concerned with bioethics. He was born in what is now known as Zimbabwe and he was a law professor at the University of Botswana. He lives in Scotland. Disappointing book. I expected more of this author. It's all about a joke machine. That's an exciting idea; however the children were very disappointed that the book didn't contain a single joke! So everytime it talked about the joke machine spitting out an hilarious joke the class was primed to hear the joke. But not a single one. So as a kids' book this just didn't work for me or the class.

Everything Alexander McCall Smith writes is good, but this children's book is especially good. His ability to combine adventure, mystery and morality is superb.
