Annnnnnnd, we’re back!
Approximately two and half years after their one week affair in Luminique (please see Kookie Dough), Nelly and Yadah are back in close proximity. And, as hinted in Kookie Dough’s epilogue, Nelly was coming back for that cookie. 🤭
Yadah is rebuilding her life after it blew up between the ending of Kookie Dough and its epilogue (to be fair, Yadah foreshadowed her own downfall in Kookie Dough, but I can’t stand an unnecessarily petty bitch, so FDNandHW). She hasn’t seen Nelly since Luminique and he hires her to be his personal assistant as a favor to his sister-in-law, Kristmas (see Finding Kristmas—not necessary to understand this book, but always fun to have background). Don’t forget—Yadah don’t change her mind and she stands on her rules. Well, Nelly dgaf and I loved every second of that for her.
What I loved:
—Spicy, but not smutty. While Yadah and Nelly’s escapades will absolutely raise your blood pressure, they form a legitimate, sustaining, romantic relationship where they have to address and deal with their internal issues before reaching their HEA. And have phenomenal moments of intimacy during the journey (one foot on the headboard and the other on the mattress 😏)
—The Delulu: Y’all were in a whole ass relationship by chapter 18 talking ‘bout, “nah, this casual.” Yeah. Okay. *insert why you always lying clip* The emotional check-ins? The strawberry sunset? Don’t piss me off. 😍😩 As a SoFla girly, I was here for all of that; take me to Knaus Berry farm for cinnamon rolls and strawberry picking please!
—Dance Therapy: I loved the accurate portrayal of healing after trauma because iykyk 😮💨 it’s a process and even when you think you’re healed, you’re never fully confident in your decision-making again (I’m definitely going to ask my therapist to recommend a dance therapist for me to try it!)
—Consistency between Finding Kristmas, Kookie Dough, and WKOT: TECHNICALLY, you don’t have to read Finding Kristmas or Kookie Dough to understand WKOT, but it makes it so much better!
—Bellaverse crumbs: I see you Drayton family ❤️ Now. If I purchased 12:01 last year, will the Bellaverse automatically update?
——Tahj and his mama’s sketchy family…any connection to Power?! I’d have to go back and reread but, if so, yaaaaaas!
—The Playlist: I don’t typically tune into curated playlists for novels but, I really wanted to immerse myself in the experience as designed by the author. [My bad to the authors whose novels I read without using the playlists!] What an experience! I created a playlist on Apple, pressed repeat, and added the songs as introduced in the recipe. I could absolutely imagine Nelly walking into his birthday party with Grillz playing in the background and Yadah losing her gotdamn mind when his grill blinged. Biiiihhhhhh 🥵💦
I ain’t gon hold you—when Bella Jay said ~700 pages, I was like, FOR WHY?! Again. My bad. She an artist and I won’t disrespect her shit ever again.
If I’d read this book a decade ago, it would have triggered tf out of me (shout out to Jesus and my therapist). So, protect your heart. TW: extramarital affairs, grieving death of family members, fertility issues, pregnancy loss, ain’t-shit-niggas, and ain’t-shit-hoes.
Thank you, Bella Jay, for providing me with an ARC! I’m excited for my pre-order with the finalized cover!
Also—not Jay potentially having the messiest story 😂
