Olive Becket Plays the Rake: An Opposites Attract Historical Romance

Rate this book
A wallflower with a secret…

Olive Becket has played it safe since the day her father died. So no one is more surprised than she when her suffrage anthem–an anonymous, harmless jingle–is a state-wide sensation. The public is clamoring to know who she is, but revealing herself could incur the wrath of her anti-suffrage landlord. Unfortunately, the devilishly handsome detective hired to unmask the composer is convinced she knows something. As if supporting her family isn’t enough, now she must outmaneuver a man who makes her shiver. If she misses a beat, she could find herself on the street. Or worse–directly in the rake’s embrace.

A detective under pressure…

Emil Anderson’s new detective agency is sinking fast. When a lucrative partnership is dangled in front of him in exchange for locating one low-profile composer, he doesn’t hesitate. To his surprise, his only lead–a perplexing pianist with spellbinding doe eyes–is immune to his famous charm. Unfortunately for her, Emil loves a good riddle, and he’ll track her until it’s solved. There’s only one snag–the more time he spends with her, the more protective he becomes. Now he has to close the case, or open his heart.

An unexpected partnership…

Her livelihood. His future. The truth. All dangerously close to unraveling. How can they put aside their mutual suspicion–and inconvenient chemistry–before someone else pulls the strings? And what if the ending they fear turns out to be the beginning they never saw coming?

I’ve read a LOT of HR since I started reading romance, and it feels rare to find something that is new and fresh. I came across this book in Felicity Niven’s newsletter, and it was such a charming and fun surprise. The story takes place in early 1900s Seattle and features suffragettes, interesting history, house boats, and baseball.

It scratched a very particular itch for me: “competent woman keeping everything together by the skin of her teeth, meets love interest who steps up to help shoulder the load and care for her in return.”

I had a few plot nits to pick toward the end (the external central conflict kind of fades to nothing, some of Emil’s dreams and wishes get a little sidelined), but I think this is totally worth a read and a breath of fresh air!

I loved everything about this book! Indie HR is literally on fire lately!

Olive Becket is a young woman trying to do it all; take care of her ailing mother and young brother, keep a roof over her head with her piano lessons and performances and fight for women’s suffrage. She doesn’t have time for the rakish Emil Anderson to start snooping around her life and uncover her secrets!

Emil needs to get his detective agency off the ground if he is ever going to get his family off his back about joining the family business… So when his first big client hires him to find the mystery author of the popular suffragette anthem, he dives in the case with both feet and comes up with one lead; shy and quiet Olive Becket!

All of can’t shake a meal so she decides to join his search and take him for a merry ride! But all this time together doesn’t go as she plans when Sparks begin to fly between them… These two are an opposites attract pairing, and together they bring out the best in each other. I loved seeing Emil fall for Olive and realize that the course he was on in life needed an adjustment that started with her!

I could not put this book down from the heart rending family struggles Olive tries to go and solve on her own, to Emil and his family drama, and of course, the suffragette cause- this book had me from page one!

Kat Sterling is an excellent writer and I love reading her pros and characters. I can’t recommend this book enough!

Sometimes you just need a book that brings joy, and this was it for me. Really, the romance between Emil and Olive just made me incredibly happy and lifted by mood. Kat Sterling’s writing feels crisp and clear, making it a perfect read when my mind feels overwhelmed but I want to get lost into a story. I find that I whizz through her books in just one or two sittings.

Both Emil and Olive were buried in their own problems when the story began. Emil was focused on starting up his detective agency, trying to make a life for himself apart from his family. Olive was overcome by eldest daughter responsibilities with a sick, widowed mother, academically struggling little brother, and poverty. She really was fighting an uphill battle and losing herself in the process.

Although the setup as to why Emil was investigating Olivia didn’t go as deep as I thought it would (I was expecting it to turn into something more nefarious by his employer), I really didn’t care. I just wanted to see Emil and Olivia forced together by any means necessary. I didn’t give a rat’s behind as to how they got there. For me, it was a story of deserving people making a good life together. It was the sweetest wallflower/rake romance.

Thank you to Kat Sterling for the ARC. This is my honest review.

This book is dedicated to women of quiet courage and let me tell you, I LOVE women of quiet courage. I especially love their representation in fighting for women's rights - an era that typically features those more outspoken for obvious reasons. I like the idea that women's rights are a cause that every kind of woman can fight for. It feels especially relevant and reflective of women's modern struggles.

Olive is a proud suffragette. She's anonymously penned an anthem for the cause and is determined to keep her identity hidden to protect her family. Emil is a challenge driven investigator in need of work. He takes on a case to discover the composer of the suffragette anthem. He and Olive are chalk and cheese, and during the course of his investigation they both make some discoveries about their characters and visions of their future.

Will I ever tire of a rake and a wallflower? No. The answer is no. Olive has a classic but powerful arc of finding her voice and valuing her self. Emil helps her act with courage, and she uses it to put herself and her family first. Emil is the type of rake who is fully focused on this woman who's caught his interest. Their character revelations flow both ways, with Emil coming to the realisation that his life as it is is kind of a bummer. Although this is an investigation plot, the focus is on the interplay between Olive and Emil, and the shifting dynamic of their relationship.

It's fun, and heartfelt, and very very sexy. You would think that Emil is the one controlling the dynamic, but the tables turn and Olive delights with her distraction shenanigans. This is a lively read that champions women, but is also a journey of understanding. Thank you to the author for the ARC ❤️

Olive Becket Plays the Rake is the latest addition to Kat Sterling’s delightful standalone series the Seattle Suffrage Society (say that ten times fast). Within the pages of this adorable rivals-to-lovers historical romance, readers are introduced to the titular FMC Olive Becket, a young member of the Seattle Suffragist Society living in poverty and teaching piano lessons to help keep food on the table for her family. It is entirely by accident that she meets MMC Emil Anderson, a young investigator hot on the trail of the mysterious composer of the Suffrage Society’s catchy and provocative new anthem.
This funny, spicy, meticulously researched novel was an absolute delight to read. Though I minored in history while obtaining my bachelor’s degree, I learned a lot that I didn’t know from the history incorporated into this book. The love story, however, was far from compromised by stuffy historical facts, and the characters were irresistibly likable. I can say with confidence that Kat Sterling has become a must-buy author for me, and she has my gratitude for allowing me to be an ARC reader for this amazing book.

The romance plot in here? ♾️ /10. It was absolutely perfect. We had:
✨ A rake; utterly bamboozled by his own simp-y behaviour, kind of a shithead who needed to GROVEL
✨ A wallflower; a secret suffragette who was so wallflower-y that it almost felt… claustrophobic to read from her perspective. In a compelling way

Their family dynamics added so much to the plot and the setting was really cool.

So why the four stars? I struggled to figure this out, myself. Most of the time, this book was in ‘stay up too late reading’ five star territory. But it had a few ‘feels put-down-able’ moments too. And it wasn’t obvious what connected them… but here’s my guess: there were plot moments, for this book and the overall series, that didn’t feel organic to Olive or Emil’s perspective. It felt like they were being told, as much as I was.

SO GOOD. LIKE SO FUCKING GOODDDD!!!
GR only having 5 stars should really be illegal.

Officially on my best reads of 2025 (and a FAVE at that!). This book surprised me, I went in not knowing a lot. I was just so bored, can't find a book I really like, would start one but eventually dnf it, so yes I just read the synopsis, started this book and hoped that this will finally end my reading slump, and oh my did it really end my slump!

This is my first time reading something from this author. The plot is really plotting, liked that this book actually balanced the romance, mystery, intrigue, and friendships (even some found family aspect). LOVEDDDD BOTH MC'S! I love that our FMC, Olive - is someone kind, talented and very much family-oriented, though she can be a bit shy at times and is a really anxious person (but with good reason). Our MMC, Emil - is such a man! He is independent (to his own detriment), kind, and....yummy. Definitely yummy. My, this guy is so delicious, he's so manly and holy guacamole the mouth on this man, he is so swoony, his love language are acts of service and words of affirmation. And finally, a book that scratched my itch when it comes to the mmc spoiling the fmc, taking care of all her needs (as well as her family's needs). I really have a thing for that cause' acts of service is also my love language and this book has a lot of that (which I truly appreciate).

The romance in this book though? Chef's kiss, the progression from enemies-to friends-to lovers is just so good! The yearning, mutual (secret) pining, the way they can't stop thinking about each other, the investigation shenanigans, the praise kink and the dirty talk is so good! I loved how petty they are on the first few chapters, always finding ways to one up each other but it also moved their relationship along and provided great banter so it's all good, and probably the best thing was that they actually love challenging each other (which I think is cute). I loved how smitten these two became with each other, they just can't stop it, they also can't seem to get their hands off each other. Best thing of all though was how they just...get each other. They saw each other for who they were and were so understanding and kind to each other's feelings.

But this ain't just all romance and I think that's the strength of this book, because it's not just romance, this is also Olive's story of how she overcame all hardships for her family, how she found her strength and learned to stand up for herself more. But this is also Emil's story of how he redeemed himself, how he finally matured/grown up, and his reconciliation with his father. This is also the suffragists story and their fight for the right to vote and have a say in what their future will be. I loved how well reasearched this book is as I have always loved history and especially loved the stories where women have emerged victorious (which, let's admit, is pretty rare in history). I always love about reading the suffrage movement in particular and have read books that featured it so this book really served for me.

I also loved the friendships in this book! I loved Winnie, Clem, Rhoda and all the other suffragists. Olive's brother is also adorable, as well as Emil's family. Liked that the villains weren't overly involved as this book's conflict relied more on external forces and the MC's personal issues (which I personally prefer). I was satisfied with the solution they ended up with and by the end of this book I was just so sure that these two are gonna make it through life and well with the epilogue, I think I'm right! The epilogue is really lovely, just full of love, sunshine and...heavenly. I really really enjoyed this book and read this in one sitting. This is my first from this author but will definitely not be my last. Highly recommended! I swear you will swoon and giggle all the way through.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was inspirational and thought provoking. It’s also set is also set in America, which makes a lovely change from historical romance books set in England.

This unusual love story between Emil Anderson and Olive Becket begins with Emil accusing Olive of being a thief (not really the done thing to win a girl over but hey, a guy’s got to try something new) at a party of a mutual friend. Olive is a member of the Seattle Sufferage Society. She enjoys the friendships she has made in the society. Olive is at the party to play the piano for the guests. Since her father died she has become the main breadwinner; teaching and playing piano to pay the bills. She is also the anonymous writer of a very popular suffragette anthem. She hasn’t told anyone her secret in case there’s problems for the family. Many of the women in the society don’t have the financial and emotional difficulties Olive is dealing with and she doesn’t want them to know.

Emil’s family came from Sweden when Emil was a boy. His father has a boat building company that he wants Emil to join but he has other plans. He wants to build a detective agency and is looking for clients to start his detective agency. He is tasked to find the writer of the suffragette anthem. He decides to use his contacts at the suffrage society to make a start.

Olive is not very keen to help Emil, especially since he has been following her for weeks since their disastrous first meeting. Emil is very astute about Olive. He really sees her and all the potential she has if only she knew it herself. She is so worried and anxious about how others see her that she can only be the real her around him as she knows he doesn’t judge her. When she agrees to help him find the writer of the anthem they find a real connection between them and feelings that neither have ever felt before. They soon realise that they have some problems to solve with their relationship and keeping Olive’s secret safe as outside influences may discover who the writer is.
Emil, being a man of integrity but lacking the understanding of the struggle that hardship brings fails to realise the one thing Olive needs to reach her full potential. When Olive opens up to him and tries to make him see what she needs, he panics and puts their future together in jeopardy.

This story took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, I went through quite a few feelings while reading this. The plot was very interesting and well written. There’s also beautifully written open door love scenes. The secondary characters in this book are mostly wonderful and entertaining and really enhance the plot. There’s a lovely epilogue and some very interesting facts about the women’s movement and legislative history. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I received a special copy from the author. I’m voluntarily leaving this review.

Olive Becket Plays the Rake is the second book in the Seattle Suffrage Society series but can be read as a standalone - even if I would suggest reading book 1 anyway.

You feel as if you are inside history, the series is extremely well-researched without feeling like an info dump. I love series starring suffragettes that span through years so we can witness various stages of progress. The group of suffragettes remains my favorite thing in this series. This is an extremely smart book, perfect for you if you like A League of Extraordinary Women or Las Leonas.

We’ve met Emil in book 1 and his story is interesting, as he was posing as a journalist as part of an ongoing investigations and we saw him as bad until we found out it was a cover. In this book he wants to make a name for himself as a PI and one assignment get Olive on his radar, as she could be the link to tracing the writer of an infamous suffragette song.

The “why can’t I stop looking at her” vibes are immaculate. Olive and Emil are so adorable and so determined to not fall for each other even as they’re actively falling. He follows her (in a semi-professional, innocuous way), buys her food, lends her his scarf. And he admires her constantly.

“I was thinking about you. I wanted to see you.”

The scene when he admits he’s courting her had me melting. There are some emotional chapters, as we see Olive struggling with self-esteem. She was being so strong for her family and I really loved how her relationship with Emil gave her whatever she needed, be it the motivation to be bold or a space to be soft.

This has as many quests as Winnie West did. I loved the secondary characters and how well rounded they were, from the families of the characters (I loved Olof’s banter with Winnie) to the old shop ladies that blatantly love and protect Olive. The heroine brother is dyslexic and I get such a blind rage when I think about those type of learning disabilities where treated in the not so old times, considering in my family it was in my mother’s generation.

I was bit perplexed at Emil’s business but at the end it all makes sense. My only critique to this book could be I wanted a bit more oomph but also like this book exactly as it is.

I received an ARC from the author, the opinions are my own.

This was absolutely charming; although it is set in 1909 Seattle, the banter and the sizzling chemistry between Olive and Emil gave an almost screwball-comedy energy, which I greatly enjoyed. However, while the writing was breezy and funny, Olive Becket Plays the Rake was by no means silly; in addition to the main driving force, the issue of women's suffrage, it featured characters in dire financial straits and struggling with crippling social anxiety, and also touched on issues such as immigration, all of which gave it a very relevant feel.

I absolutely loved both protagonists: Olive, a quiet, timid young woman who starts out as a lamb, and Emil, a lovable, charming rogue who helps her come out of her shell and become a lioness. The spark between them is instant, and the development of that attraction into a deep mutual admiration was very believable. It was a real pleasure to see how Olive’s confidence blossomed thanks to her female friends and the man made entirely out of green flags (I can’t decide what was more charming, the knitting, the way he took Olive’s young brother under his wing, or maybe the way he plied her with snacks). They were surrounded by a cast of charming side characters, comprising their families and Olive’s fiercely protective fellow suffragists. There were so many charming little scenes; I especially loved the scene in which they visited a hilarious spiritualist, and the one in which Bloody Ollie made an appearance during a baseball game. The third-act breakup and the way it was resolved were also perfectly done.

I was also pleasantly surprised by how sexy this book was; the steam was just right and featured some wonderful praise from the erstwhile rake, who was completely smitten by Olive’s newfound boldness.

The only thing that didn’t completely work for me was the central setup of Emil trying to find the author of the suffrage anthem, which turned out to be a little flimsy; I’m still a bit fuzzy on the motivations of the antagonist and didn’t really care about it. Other than that, this was disarmingly charming, hilariously funny, and sexy.

Huge thanks to Kat Sterling for the ARC.

This was a fantastic book! It was fun, playful, and had just the right amount of spice! It was also beautifully written: the language flowed smoothly and avoided the overly burdensome prose that period pieces often fall into. There was a lovely timelessness to the writing that transported you back in time without feeling forced or stuffy. I loved the backdrop of the suffrage movement. It wasn’t just historical window dressing, it actively empowered and inspired the women in the story. Watching their political awakening and personal growth was both delightful and resonant. It felt like both a celebration of historical change and a quiet inspiration for modern politics, especially when it also hit upon themes of immigration and xenophobia.

Olive was a wonderfully well-rounded character. We got to see every facet of her: her interests, struggles, insecurities, ambitions, friendships, and professional challenges. She fought fiercely for the causes and people she cared about, yet still made space to consider those around her. It was beautiful to watch her bloom with Emil, especially as she began to take ownership of her desires, both emotionally and physically.

Emil was a lovable playboy and a little bit of a man child, but then again, most fictional rakes are. His emotional journey unfolded at a realistic pace. The slow burn of his growing affection felt believable rather than forced, and it was fun to watch him wrestle with his own feelings for Olive as he realized that love didn’t "leash" him, it freed him. (You know it’s real love when a woman finds your untidiness endearing!)

That said, there was a slight sense of convenience in the familiar trope: “all you need is the love of a good woman to fix your life.” The ending felt a bit too tidy and slightly at odds with his earlier need for independence. If his rebellion was just childishness all along, that weakens the depth of his arc a little. But the story was so enjoyable and well-executed that it’s easy to forgive that detail without it detracting from the book’s overall impact.

In summary: a highly enjoyable, emotionally rich, and delightfully written story. Definitely worth the read!

I thoroughly enjoyed this adversaries to friends to lovers romance with its added opposites attract and rake-wallflower tropes. It is set in early 20th-century Seattle. The plot is well written, has a good pace, and is full of emotion, humorous moments, and some steamy love scenes. It is also a story about female empowerment, strength, courage, and unconditional support and understanding. The endearing characters couldn't be more different, but they are perfect for each other. Olive is shy, fearful, and insecure, but would do anything for her family in need. Emil is a commitment-phobic rake who enjoys life to the fullest and wants to go his own way without having to follow in his father's footsteps. It was heartwarming how Emil stood beside Olive, accompanied her through her fears, and encouraged her to be herself and believe in herself. I also liked the historical tidbits.

Emil Anderson is a well-known libertine from an immigrant upper middle-class family who does not want to get involved in relationships. He also refuses to work in the family business and opens his own detective agency. His first assignment is to track down the composer of a popular suffragette anthem for a wealthy, long-established client, and he persuades the shy and musically talented suffragette Olive Becket, whom he met at a ball, to help him.
Since the death of her father, Olive has been living with her sickly mother and little brother in extreme poverty and constant fear, struggling to support her family. Her ray of hope is her friendship and bond with other suffragettes, but she hides her precarious situation from them out of shame and fear. No one knows that she wrote the anthem. When Emil, the only person who seems to really see her, persuades her to help him find the mysterious composer, she agrees in order to lead him astray...

All in all, a delightful historical romance with very likable protagonists, great character development, emotion and heat that I am happy to recommend!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Olive’s comfortable upper middle class life was upended upon her father’s passing. Shunned by her friends, strapped for funds, taking care of her mother and raising her 10yo brother, she found a nook at the Seattle Suffrage Society. Never did she expect her whimsical jingle would turn into their anthem. She can’t afford the notoriety and its dire consequences – and so, a mousy little lamb she must be.
Swedish immigrant and dashing rake, Emil greatly enjoys the freedom his father’s success affords him, but not the man’s pressure to enter the family business. He wants to carve his own path as a private detective, and since beggars can’t be choosers, he accepts a job to track down the suffrage anthem’s composer. His most promising lead is an enigmatic young woman immune to his charm. Except, he isn’t immune to hers...

This was a gorgeous tale of hope and perseverance set against the tumultuous backdrop of the suffrage movement. And while an important part of the story, I loved how focused it stayed on Olive’s little corner of that world – leaving the side-characters and their woes for, no doubt, equally brilliant books 🤞🏻🍀

Olive’s life is a struggle, but so is Emil’s in a very different way. Their slow burn chemistry was mesmerising. I loved the dry wit, the banter, the games, the care and support.
I loved her quiet strength, how she blossomed despite insecurities and worries, how she dared to demand more. I loved her rascal brother and how much love there was in her household, even with all the setbacks – and yes, her situation is heartwrenching.
I loved his easy confidence and ginormous heart, his protectiveness, his eye for detail, how he always followed his own gut, not taking the easiest path, stupid stubborn mistakes and all. I loved his family; the warmth and teasing from his mother and sister, the taciturn support of his brother, and the strained demanding but loving relationship with his father.
I loved everything about this book; it simply was an exquisite read!
One you should definitely check out!

What a special treat this book is. I learned a lot about the Suffrage during the early days and how hard it was for the women behind the movement. Olive is so special and has had sure a rough time after her father passed. She is the bread winner for her mother who suffered from panic attacks and can’t leave the house. Her little brother, Robert helps all he can, but both her mother and her want him to be in school and not made to work. She is a piano teacher and a member of the Suffrage club where they are trying to get a bill passed so women can vote. She has written the anthem for the movement, and it becomes a hit! She can’t tell anyone, or her nasty landlady will kick them out. Emil is a handsome, rouge who is trying to open his own Investigator firm. He is at odds with his father, who wants him to work in the family business, and he wants his independence. When they first met, he calls Olive a thief! Her friends come to her recluse and he feels bad. But when he gets his first job it is to find out who wrote the anthem. Which means he will be following Olive to see if she will lead him to the person. Olive knows what he is up to and comes up with a number of events to lead him astray. Laugh out loud funny, these two and how both try to play the other. There is lot going on in this story, with her anxiety and her mother’s illness. Emil has problems with his Swedish father, and both must deal with the growing attraction between them. Oh, my lots of emotions, secrets and steam too. Grab a copy to find out what happens to both and if they can overcome all the odds against them before they lose what is the most important to both. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. Now I need to go back and read book one that I missed.

In this captivating historical romance, Olive Becket leads a cautious life after the loss of her father, only to find herself thrust into the spotlight when her anonymous suffrage anthem becomes a state-wide sensation. Facing the threat of exposure that could jeopardize her family’s livelihood, Olive crosses paths with Emil Anderson, a charming yet determined detective whose struggling agency depends on unmasking the mysterious composer. Their journey unfolds with mutual suspicion, undeniable chemistry, and unexpected personal growth as they navigate societal pressures and their own hearts.

This story powerfully captures the emotional landscape of women during the suffrage movement, highlighting Olive’s courage and vulnerability. The transformation in both Olive and Emil is beautifully rendered—Olive blossoms from a shy, reserved pianist into a confident woman standing firm in her beliefs, while Emil’s rakish demeanor softens as he discovers depth, loyalty, and the true value of commitment. Their relationship feels authentic, heartfelt, and passionate, enriched by Emil’s unwavering support for Olive’s aspirations and his genuine care for her family.

I loved this story, with its engaging characters, emotional depth, and a perfect balance of romance and historical context, this book is a delightful read. The nuanced portrayal of personal growth and heartfelt connections makes it more than just a love story—it’s an inspiring tale of self-discovery and resilience.

I love the misjudge at first sight trope!

When Emil Anderson first meets Olive Becket he doesn't just assume the worst--he accuses her of being a jewelry thief at a party with all of her friends. I love how protective her friends are of her -- they immediately come to her defense and warn Emil--a consummate bachelor who is plenty active--away from her as if he is the thief.

Something about her intrigues him though, and he begins some light *stalking* because he's a very serious investigator.

There are several interesting subplots -- the cause of women's suffrage making its way through the Washington State legislature, shady businessmen, and Olive's struggle to support her family. The way Emil softens towards Olive when he realizes who she truly is was fantastic. He flips from accusatory to uber protective and wants to make Olive's life better however he can.

I'm also feral for the playboy loses all skill with his one true love trope. Emil is like what is happening why am I not smooth at all with her?

I thought the third act breakup was realistic and added to Emil's character growth.

I basically just love the little world of strong Seattle women this author has created and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

I had the best time with this book. It had everything I love to read in a historical romance — great banter, tenderness, and a wonderful setting.

Olive is such a strong heroine — intelligent, quietly brave, and so easy to root for. She has the juggle of caring for her mother and brother since her father’s death while trying to keep her secret hidden - that she's the anonymous writer of a famous suffrage anthem. Then enters Emil, the charming and ambitious detective who’s searching for the mysterious musician, unaware she’s right under his nose. I loved how gentle he was with Olive — the way he saw her, even though she’d tried so hard to stay hidden. The longing and tenderness between them was everything, and I could not get enough!

Not only was the romance fantastic, but the side characters also added so much to this story. Olive’s mother and brother, along with Emil’s family, were all stand-outs. And I can’t forget Olive’s friends at the Suffrage Society who were always there to rally around and support her.

I was completely smitten with this story and could not recommend it enough!

I want to all caps this but you guys - Emil claims Olive by wrapping her up in his scarf, his scarf that he knit!! He lives in a floating house on Lake Washington!!! And he is so so gone for Olive.

This was funny, it was swoony, it was heartachey. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Olive lead Emil on a wild goose chase while he tries to find the anonymous composer of the suffragist anthem (not a spoiler, it's her!), and watching them fall for each other through mutual care and comfort. The way Emil just loves and accepts her and helps her through her anxiety, ugh, fantastic! Of course the road to their HEA isn't smooth, but it felt realistic and well-earned.

I also absolutely love that Kat Sterling sets her books in early 1900s Seattle because places other than NYC, the Wild West, and the UK exist! I also appreciated that Emil is from a Swedish immigrant family and that Swedish is sprinkled throughout this book. And yes Emil's white immigrant status does come into play in the story, but you'll have to read the book to find out how!

It was fun seeing the whole suffragist gang together, doing their best to ensure votes for women, and I can't wait to see whose turn it is next to find their HEA!

Thank you to @katsterlingbooks for an eARC. All opinions are my own.

Olive Beckett is gifted, shy lovely pianist and composter but has way too much on her plate and her very thin shoulders!
Emil Anderson is handsome, witty and determined to be a detective and make a go of it rather than the family business!
They are complete opposites! Emil runs from family responsibilities and Olive embraces it because she has no choice!
Olive’s one passion is the Suffragette movement but she does not want her friends to know how poorly they live and how she is often hungry!
When Emil is assigned to find out who wrote the suffragette jingle it brings these two together more often than not!
Emil is determined to find the truth and Olive livelihood depends on keeping it from her obnoxious, overbearing landlord!
These two are hilarious as Olive finds her strength and courage with a man who sees her for herself!
Emil finds ways to care for Olive who cares for everyone else and no one cares for her!
These two fall head over heels but Emil has to figure out what is more important? Is defying his father really worth the business failing?
Can Emil put aside his fears and be the man Olive needs? It is a steamy, witty story that you won’t put down! Bravo very well done!

Another great historical romance showing their American suffragist movement. I don’t often read in this time period so the setting felt very refreshing but still with a classic HR vibe.

Both lead characters development arcs were handled well, especially Olive’s. There’s a tendency to completely change shy and quiet characters in the name of “character development” this book however perfectly avoids that. It still feels like Olive by the end, she just learnt her worth and how to stand up for herself not become an entirely new person. As more of an introvert myself I was overjoyed to see this common mistake avoided and it meant I could really relate to Olive. I also loved learning about the American suffragist movement through reading this book, this was also a feature of the previous book in the series.

I can’t wait for more in this series! Will it be Clem or Rhoda’s story first? Both I am eagerly anticipating. I also look forward to learning more of the history expertly woven into the stories.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. The Holiday Flu got to me and so I was delayed in picking this up before it released, had I been well I would have read this much sooner.

This book really made me think about what setting adds to a story. Because if this were set in Victorian England, I'd be all "OK, that was a nice wallflower/rake romance!" But since it's set in Seattle at the turn of the 20th Century I'm like, "Ooh, how is Kat Sterling going to make this trope work exactly?" So this is one way a rake/wallflower romance might look like in the historical Pacific Nortwest.

We've got Olive, the main breadwinner for her small family since her father's death, and who lives with more than a touch of anxiety. We've got Emil, super hot private detective who has a 5-rule system to manage his romantic liaisons (it includes a "no cuddling" clause). And we've got the case that brings them together, when a Seattle magnate hires Emil to uncover the composer of a suffragist anthem (that would be Olive).

I especially liked the way the fluidity of society was depicted. In British-set historical romances, there's a clear distinction between the aristocracy and the common class, which certainly lends itself to plenty of tense relationship conflicts. Here, Seattle "high society" is made up of doctors, lawyers, journalists, and other business men, so it's relatively easy to join but also to fall away once you don't have the means to keep up. Olive was a junior member before her father's death, and now she lives on the periphery providing piano lessons to children of her old friends and performing at social events rather than attending.

I'm also really liking the variety of HEAs in this series! Some of the women don't want to be burdened with a husband; some prefer the social and financial stability a spouse can provide. It feels special for each couple (and, let's be honest, it's dictated by what the FMC prefers) - which is really the best that you can ask for!

21-Word Summaries:

Laine: Olive is in survival mode and has become a shell of herself; helping her out of her shell is Emil's calling.

Meg: Emil is a rake who has rules (that he breaks for Olive). This is the kind of praise kink I like.

This objective review is based on a complimentary copy of the novel.

This was such a delightful novel. I fell in love with these two. Olive is a capable and loving woman doing the best she can to support her family. Emil is a charming rake with an underlying vulnerability. When he falls for Olive he falls hard.

This was such a sweet romance. Both characters championed each other, and it was lovely to see. I felt the romance unfolded at the perfect pace as the pair got to know each other. It was endearing to watch Emil care for Olive and her family. He supported Olive’s suffrage endeavors and never questioned her ideas/plans. The man even knit her scarves and hats. 😍

The setting for this novel was refreshing. I enjoyed learning about 1900’s Seattle and the sweeping change taking place in the city as more and more immigrants moved in. The themes of women, immigrants, and working class citizens fighting for change was quite well done, and I felt it really enhanced the story. The conversation surrounding these themes was interesting, and I’m glad they didn’t take a backseat once the romance gained steam.

This was such an enjoyable novel, and I’m excited to read more books by this author!

“Olive Becket Plays the Rake" is a charming historical romance!

The FMC Olive Becket is working hard to help her family stay afloat after the death of her father, and she encounters a man attempting to build a detective agency. At first, he accused her of being a thief, and having a false accusation leveled at me would have made me far more angry if I were in her situation. Fortunately, her friends rally around her and support her. Watching Olive gain strength during a very challenging time was inspiring, and seeing the fight for women’s suffrage portrayed was entertaining and educational.

The MMC, Emil Anderson, is trying to build a private detective agency and is by nature a very thorough investigator. After accusing Olive of theft, he becomes extremely protective of her and over the course of the book, ends up breaking his own rules about romance. Watching him be surprised about his own missteps and lack of smoothness was really adorable too.

There are twists and turns to keep you engaged and a lovely epilogue as well. I think you’ll enjoy this story!

"Olive Becket Plays the Rake" is an absolutely delightful book that I enjoyed over the course of several days. It was cute, spicy, and charmed me absolutely. Emil breaking his own romantic rules over the course of the book and his kindness towards Olive is enthralling. Additionally, it has given me some ideas. I also truly appreciated the approach to things like birth-control in the text; it's something I give a lot of thought to in real life and I love when it's handled well in fiction. This book made me laugh, it almost made me cry, the epilogue made me SO happy. Read this book. It will make you smile.

Additionally, I love her descriptions of food. I'm a regular foodie in real life, and meals feel integral to the plot. I desperately want those cookies from the end of the book.

I loved finally reading Emil's story, who had me so intrigued in book 1 of the series, and Olive's, who in book 1 was so sweet and I hadn't realized how much she was struggling.
This was a darkish (because of Olive's situation) but at the same time such a soft book when I needed softness, I loved it, I just couldn't stop crying/swooning at how gentle Emil was with Olive 😭
I also loved the friendship of the suffragette group and how they tried to help Olive, even though they themselves admitted it took them a while to realize how dire her situation was.
And the way the Andersons embraced Olive and her family 😭😭

Can't wait for the next book, which I hope is Rhoda's because I'm worried about her.

Another fantastic instalment in The Seattle Suffrage Society series.

This was the story of pianist, Olive, and detective, Emil.

Kat Sterling does and excellent job of building the relationship between her two leads. We also have really well developed characters with their human strengths and failings.

I loved the extended cast of characters as well. Olive and Emil's respective families and the friends at the Suffrage Society.

And I really want more of Pete, Emil's older woodcarving brother.

Thank you Kat Sterling for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Olive Becket is a suffragette who has fallen on hard times. Emil Anderson is a ladies man who has been employed to find out a suffragette’s secret. Their worlds collide and both must navigate obstacles to achieve their goals- Olive to care for her family and Emil to make a life outside of his. As time progresses each realise that their feelings towards the other are deepening but the relationship is far from smooth. Roadblocks come their way to overcome and how they achieve this makes for an entertaining story. Well developed characters against the backdrop of the suffragette movement ensures a story well worth reading.

1908 Suffrage, steamy, HEA
Great story! The main characters are realistically written. Olive, anxiety driven, strives to keep herself, mother, and brother housed and fed by working multiple pianist jobs while still quietly remaining involved with the suffrage movement. Accused several times of being a thief by Emil, former journalist and police officer turned private detective, Olive shows more of her personality to him as Emil becomes more and more involved in her life. They learn and evolve together for a sweet HEA.

Olive has a secret. Piano teacher, secret suffragist and composer ... as well as the sole financial support for her widowed mother and little brother, she carries the weight of the world on her slender shoulders. Emil, former police officer turned private detective, enters her world and slowly breaks down her barriers and discovers her secrets. This lovely historical romance set in the Pacific Northwest has all the feels and a nice HEA.
