Shane West was used to being the only wolf shifter at the Stockton Police Department. His enhanced senses helped him do his job efficiently and he prided himself on keeping control of his animal instincts. Gay from the first day he'd shifted, he also expected to live his long life alone, and provided it meant that he didn't have to come into contact with any of his ex-pack, he told himself he was happy. And he was. Until Dimitri Polst was assigned as his new partner.

Two years older and from the same pack, Dimitri had made it his teenage mission to bring as much pain and humiliation to pretty-boy Shane as possible. Hahahahahaha, OK, wow. You know that old adage, never judge a book by its cover? Well, this story proves that adage wrong. You can totally judge this book by its cover. And since that cover is one of the worst book covers I've ever clapped eyes on, I'm sure you can guess what I thought of the writing.

Isn't that fantastic? It's like that "Let's eat, Grandma!/ Let's eat Grandma!" meme only way, way dirtier.
Ready for some more awesome abuse of the written word?

"'I have to admit that I was worried that some of the pack would come after me once it got around the pack about my sexuality, but when they didn't, I came to realization that I just wasn't important enough to anyone, for them to care about what I did, or who.'"

So much grammarcide. As law enforcement officers, Shane and Dimitri really should arrest their creator for all that blatant assault.
Aside from the technical aspects of the writing, the book isn't completely irredeemable. It just isn't very good. The plot is hackneyed and trite, the pace is frenetic, and the characters are kind of unrealistically stupid. I saw the villain coming a mile away, too (no double entendre intended). And this book is currently $3.99 on Amazon.
Really not worth it.

Look, I usually love the bully & former bullee love fest trope. I understand it's extremely difficult to pull off convincingly.
However...
"You know I never did apologize for the way I treated you growing up," he said quietly.Nope. Nuh uh. No, thank you very much.
"There's nothing to apoligize for," Shane said. "You were doing what you were programmed to do by your parents, the school social system, and the pack. I know I was small and too pretty for my own good."

I liked the prompt and can see how the tattoos in the photo could prompt a shifter fic but arrogant bullying alphas will never be for me.
Dimitri was a homophobic bully as a kid, years later he doesn't appear to have changed he's still controlling, aggresive, unpleasant. Oh and straight, m/m porn does nothing for him but he did take notes - what a prize!
Shane after making a life for himself is back to being bullied powerless under-Were.
But they're mates, so Dimitri smells nice?
And both characters appear to have a clever, witty female BFF...

I do usually love shifter stories but this one was just so formulaic it made me grit my teeth. The plot was boring, the main characters were unlikeable, the writing was average, the GFY theme was an excuse to trot out some offensive cliches about what it means to be gay... So, bleh.

Ehhhh, it was ok. I laughed when after Shane told his captain that Dimitri was homophobic, the captain countered that there was nothing in his résumé that indicated that. WTF? Is that something people typically include in their résumé? LOL!
Also, I don't understand why Shane wouldn't tell his superiors that
Then there were the dreaded endearments, one of my pet peeves. So overall, it was somewhat entertaining, but not enough for me to want to read more of their story.

I have a soft spot for Lisa Oliver's books and this series is actually my favorite. Her stories are not really complicated and plots are not twisted or mysterious but she makes her characters so appealing and easy to relate to that I can't help but love them. All of her books are a win for me! ;-)
I loved this book. From enemies to mates, from straight to gay - it was a very enjoyable read. Shane is such a funny and versatile character. I liked him from the start. He is funny, loyal and also lonely. He had to leave his pack when he came out to his parents. It must have been scary for a young shifter to be in the world where he knows no one. I was proud of how far he has come on his own.
And Dimitri here. I didn't like him at the beginning considering he was Shane's bully and how he cowardly ran from him and tried to move on. I mean it was his decision and all but he just took the chance of mating from Shane without even telling him. That was a sh*tty thing to do. And the whole hang up about "I am with you but I am not gay" kind of sucked. I was annoyed when he kept repeating that like a stubborn goat! I am glad to say he pulled his head out of his patootie and gave his all to Shane just like he needed and deserved.
The crime itself was mildly fascinating and it got me to work a little at who did it but it was still obvious when that character was introduced. But I enjoyed the confrontation! All in all I really liked the book and will continue to enjoy this series! Again!

I'm totally in the minority here with my rating but I really couldn't get past Dimitri's stupidity or the way he hurt Shane. Dimitri definitely didn't get the memo as far as how the whole shifter mate for life lark works, and I think he got off with his bigoted bullying in the past far too lightly. Yup, I'm not a Dimitri fan.
I'll probably carry on with the series because Sin has me intrigued.

I enjoyed this story with the cops/shifters and actually liked both characters, including Dimitri with is appalling behaviour in the beginning of the story. I think the 'romance' element reached a natural conclusion but I found it slightly annoying to reach a 'to be continued', not something I usually expect in one of these DRITC books. However, I liked this story enough that I will happily read a sequel.

So, let me get this straight. Dimitri knew Shane was his mate and still left him to the tender mercies of the bullies for 2 years? What a fucking coward. I could never accept him as any kind of protagonist.

3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. Might become a solid 4 series though....
Firstly for those who need to know... this has a "TO BE CONTINUED" ending. I'm glad I read it anyway, despite it now preying on my mind that I read an unfinished work, with no scheduled continuance (I'm not panicking, I'm just saying, you know, HURRY UP AND WRITE PLEASE!).
In a way that ending was a good thing. I liked the story and characters considerably, and the slower burn buid up suited the plot perfectly - of course a bully is going to have to overcome the emotions he caused the victim. And being nervous to be thought gay made sense for Dimitri, just as doubting the GFYness made sense for Shane. Thus the whole morning after "we'll see where this goes" mentality for Shane does need a next book. The crime didn't get solved either. Nor has Dimitri had to deal with his own coming out in the workplace. Also I felt iffy about Angela - if I were Shane I'd be unappreciative of my mate's ex-girlfriend (they were together 3 yrs, had what sounds like a pretty damn sexual relationship too, none of this "I was just faking it" business for Dimitri, no sir) being the only one Dimitri felt he could talk to. On the other hand I felt Dimitri going to the station and owning to his new-found sexuality for Shane was a great move and romantically touching. I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the rest of their story. Also I think the lieutenant did it!

Shane and Dimtri's story is engaging and you get quite a lot of opportunity to explore their relationship with them. This is a nice length novel that lets the secondary characters and the setting shine. In particular I would note that one of the reasons I love shifter books is that they often incorporate more senses then just sight. You'll get more of taste, smell, hearing, and even touch because these play more prominently in shifter universes. This really lets me get more immersed in the story.
The mystery I figured out pretty quick but that didn't spoil the fun because there was just enough mystery to support the romance without overwhelming or underwhelming it. A nice balance!
Great start to a series. 4 stars because I thought there was too soon forgiveness by Shane for Dimtri. I wanted there to be a bit more work on big D there for Shane's forgiveness. OTOH I appreciated he knew he couldn't live in the past and he really did make the present and future the goals. Nicely done - facing the fear, being fragile and not giving up - but knowing when to fold 'em. Almost self help like LOL

Needs editing. Cute story. I love M/M stories about cops and shifters. This was both. Not great but still a fun read.

Thought this started all right, but it quickly deteriorated into lameness. I was barely able to finish.
To be fair though, I have this horrible love/hate relationship with shifter stories. They are a complete hit or miss for me. This one was a miss, but I’m pretty sure some of you will enjoy it…maybe.
If you often find the whole mate/mine thing irritating (even though in the hands of certain authors it can be ridiculously hot), if you are picky and religiously stick to a very small (and carefully selected) group of authors for your shifter fix… then I would avoid.
If you love Shifter stories in all their testosterone injected, insta-love, growly glory…then I would jump right in.
Also, bit of a cliffhanger at the end.

I don't know why I decided that June was a Lisa Oliver re-bingeing month but considering all the weird little trashy books I started the month with it wasn't difficult to fall into a confort/no brain read 😂❤️
I had again the same issues I have with most of her books that make me roll my eyes so hard they get stuck back there but listening to the over the top drama while I knit makes me pass the time in a safe-ish way while overstimulated so I'll take it!
On one hand so many issues (bi erasure/internalised homophobia/femme-phobia/fat-phobia/misogyny/weird representation of BDSM/police abuse of power) on the other hand so much trashy goodness and I remember the sequels being fun as well so I stand by my old rating 🤷♀️

This started off really well. I liked the premise of wolf shifters being cops, had high hopes for the love/hate/mate relationship between the smaller shifter and his straight teenage nemesis who had made his early years hell, looked forward to the background murder mystery and loved the idea of the sexual tension that was going to be generated from the two opposites MC's finding out they were mates.
I got quite engaged in this GFY story and have to say it was a pretty sexy read, especially when Shane and Dimitri finally got physical. But it dipped a little mid story and I did have a couple of WTF! moments...plus when a stereotypical, homophobic nasty cop was introduced I did the eye roll but generally speaking it was enjoyable, even though it does ends on a "To be continued" cliffy.
I liked it enough to want to see what happens next because there's obviously more to come yet. The crime side of the story was probably the weakest in this short, because most of it was taken up with Dimitri trying to make Shane accept him as his mate, Shane coming to terms with their rocky past history and the two of them fighting the sexual tension whilst on the job but I think that when Lisa writes the follow up, the murder mystery will hopefully be more fleshed out and we'll get the answers we need. I just love the fact that there's so many diverse stories running through these yearly GR events and the fact that they're free is just brilliant.

3.5 Stars ~ I enjoyed this first book in Lisa Oliver's 'Stockton Wolves' series. I know the author has indicated that each of these books can be read as a standalone and I'm certain that is true. I, however, would miss out on seeing the family that Shane and Dmitri have created.
I really liked Shane, from the beginning my heart went out to him. Dmitri had to grow on me because most of the time I just wanted to slap him and say, "seriously, jackass? Get your head out of your butt and quit worrying about what other people will think! You have been gifted with a fated true mate. Don't be stupid."
The mystery/serial killer portion of the story was entertaining but it was way too easy to figure out whodunit. I'm not a fan of that kind of predictability. But, I give kudos to the author for making it interesting.
I adored the fact that Dmitri and Shane now have their own pack, which resulted in needing a bigger house, that is comprised of Peter, Dmitri's little brother, and his mate, Kalel, a cat shifter, plus Ben, Peter's best friend, and his mate, Sin, a human dominant sadist. Firstly I want to be clear - I read and thoroughly enjoyed the free story portion of this - enough that when I realised there was an expanded published version I was on it. I'm not sure what's happened with the goodreads listing - when I added the new paid for book to my shelves it was separate to the free story. So I hope this doesn't overwrite that review.
At the end of the free story I mentioned in my review several unfinished issues I felt needed addressing and am happy to say they were thoroughly attended to! Plus (and only unspoiler if you want to know the killer - you've been warned!) . The sex continued hot and Dimitri's struggle with accepting himself was well-portrayed, as was Shane's subsequent hurt. I liked the additions to the pack but I did wonder if the mate revelations peaked too early for them - I'll try and not judge as I assume upcoming sequels will deal with those matings. Very happy with the expanded story.

The thing I love about enemies-to-lovers stories is all of the lovely emotion between the characters. There wasn't any of that here.
The only emotion I felt from this story was disgust at the lieutenant. In a story full of cliches, having the homophobic asshole LT also be disgustingly overweight (all fat people have no self-control, and are therefore bad, donchaknow) was offensive and over-the-top.

So many things went wrong after the promising prologue, that I don't even want to start to list them here, it will take too much time off my reading. Check out other 2 and 1 star reviews to get the idea, most of them are dead on.

Just imagine what it would be like for a guy if his worst enemy from high school, and a raging homophobe, turned out to be his mate, the one wolf shifter intended to be his partner for the rest of his life. Actually, in Shane’s case it is even worse: he knows that Dimitri, the high school jock who made his life hell, is his mate. But when Dimitri suddenly comes after him to the city he has made his home, haunting him as his new partner at work, Shane’s preconception about the man being straight, or in this case his memories about how much of a player Dimitri was back then, are stronger than perceptions. Shane just cannot imagine that Dimitri of all people, err, wolf shifters, could be his mate.
Dimitri has a lot to answer to. He may have thought he was straight for years, but that was no excuse to torment Shane in high school. After that, when Shane had left the pack, Dimitri never had any reason to change his mind—until the urge to find and claim his mate finally overwhelms him and he figures out a way to get close to Shane. Does he talk to the man? Does he try to apologize or explain? Nah, why should he? He’s a macho guy who is all about the action. Unfortunately, things are not that easy with Shane, and Dimitri has a lot to learn before he can find the kind of happiness and fulfillment he’s been dreaming of—mate bond or no mate bond!
Shane left the pack for a reason; he needed to get away from the taunting and ridicule Dimitri was heaping on him. He also wanted to be free to live his life the way he wanted, without constant interference from pack-based prejudice; nobody in the pack is “allowed” to be gay. He is quietly minding his own business, building his career as a cop, when Dimitri reappears in his life. Shocked beyond measure and angry that Fate has saddled him with a straight mate, meaning they can never be happy, he does everything he can to push away the man he was meant to be with. Luckily for both of them there is enough attraction between them to force them to find a solution—even if it takes a while.
If you like enemies to lovers stories, if you enjoy reading about wolf shifters who try to deny their very nature only to fail miserably and like the results, and if you’re looking for a hot, entertaining read, then you will probably like this free novella. Oh, and there’s a sort of open ending that made me hope there will be more stories about Shane and Dimitri…

This was nearly impossible for me to rate. I’m not sure that I can remember a book that has frustrated me more. Let me start off by saying that I really wanted to like this book. It was sitting on my wish list for a while because the blurb really interested me.
I ended up liking the idea of the characters and the idea of the story more than the actual end result. The plot was all over the place, the sex was mediocre after a while, the mystery or twist as it were was predictable, the injection of family drama didn’t make sense to me in how it played out and the writing over all was very juvenile and hard for me to read without skimming and correcting sentence structure in my head. I am truly not a stickler for editing perfection and typos, but this was beyond that limit.
All that being said, I still liked some parts of the story very much and enjoyed most of the characters. The story could have benefited greatly from grammatical, content and structure editing as well as a friend to say “hey, these 5 comma sentences don’t make sense” but as I said, the concept was something I could have enjoyed. This was the first thing I’ve read by the author and I am not inspired to try anything else which is unfortunate especially if it could have been fixed by editing.

This was book 1 in the
"Stockton Wolves"
This was a good read that I thought was too long at times. Shane West was used to being the only wolf shifter at the Stockton Police Department. Dimitri Polst has just been assigned as his new partner they knew each other before Dimitri made his life a living hell he avoids anyone in his old pack. I didn't like Dimitri he was an arrogant homophobic jerk like the members of his pack. Turns out these two are mates. When these two begin investigating a murder case it interesting. I liked the secondary characters in this book and I also liked the fact that they started there own pack. This book did have a few errors in it. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Very good, but I can't believe the author left us hangin' on the killer! 3.5 stars. The sex was hot, the chemistry was good, I loved the wolfy aspects and the old enemies to lovers trope. I found the LT to be over the top and I don't see how he's kept his job.
