Mercury Raine: a Whisper in the Wind

Rate this book
Mercury Raine is the most sought-after ghost broker in all the kingdom, with more ghosts than anyone knows and more secrets than one person should have. With a dangerous past threatening to catch up with him, Mercury has taken on the goliath task of training his new neighbor, Tacey Wilde, in the ghost brokering trade. Doing so isn’t without risks, but letting her and her all-too-knowing ghost simply walk away is far more perilous.

He has been warned to be on the lookout for more ghosts like Tacey’s, who know things about him that they ought not. So, when two new clients arrive with a ghost who remembers him, despite never having met him, Mercury knows he must do everything he can to keep their ghost, the Cream Canary, at his home and the secrets she knows from being whispered into the wrong ears.

So clever and witty!

Loved this second installment of the adventures of ghost broker Mercury Raine! While book one set the stage and introduced us to the imaginative world of ghost brokers, ghosts, and the rules that tie them together, this sequel deepened the mystery and intrigue in all the best ways.

Love the chemistry between Mercury and Miss Huddleston, and oh, the ghosts! Some were mysterious, some a little mischievious, but all left me grinning and wanting to read more.

There's a great blend of humor, intrigue, and heart as the story unfolds and it's clear that this world is only going to get more captivating. Can't wait to dive in to the next part of the story!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

“Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind" by Sarah Eden is the second installment in the “Mercury Raine” novellas. I loved the first novella and was excited to read more about Mercury and the different ghosts. I enjoyed this one even more than the first! It was great to see familiar characters and get to know them more in “Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind.” I loved Aventine Manor, where the novella takes place. It was also fun to see more of the possible love interest and how that played out (I love their interactions). The mystery was great, and I am so impressed by the witty writing. I cannot wait to read more of this series!

Content: I give this a PG rating. Some examples of the content: mention of alcohol.
TW: past child abuse; possible PTSD.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I was hooked with the first book in this novella series but this one drew me in even more. Mercury has reluctantly taken Tacey Wilde (the former Miss Huddleston) as an apprentice and I think she's a great addition! He’s trying to protect her, protect himself, and keep a thousand secrets under control at the same time—and none of that is going smoothly.

I really like Tacey, she gets along well with all of the ghosts and she's helpful with Mercury's new clients. Speaking of new clients, they require a complicated trade so Mercury can keep the ghost known as the Cream Canary, who recognizes Mercury despite never having met him.

I love the mystery surrounding Mercury and these ghosts that know things about him that they shouldn't know. I finished this one feeling both satisfied yet desperate to know what happens next.

Hold on to your bonnets and spectral secrets—because Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind by Sarah M. Eden takes witty banter, Regency charm, & ghostly chaos to a whole new level of brilliance.

Mercury Raine may be the most exasperatingly brilliant ghost broker in all of France—half gentleman, half chaos, all secrets—and this second installment proves he’s both haunted & heart-melting. Between juggling unpredictable spirits, training his far-too-clever neighbor Tacey Wilde, & keeping his own past from catching up with him, it’s a miracle he hasn’t combusted into Victorian vapor.

This novella had me grinning, gasping, & muttering, “Oh, Mercury, no…” at least six times per chapter.

WHAT I LOVED
💀 The ghosts—equal parts mischievous, tragic, & oddly relatable
💬 Mercury’s dry humor—pure chef’s kiss levels of sarcasm.
🔥 That slow-burn tension between Mercury & Tacey. You could toast a croissant over it.
🏰 Aventine Manor’s gothic charm & creaky mystery vibes.
🪶 The witty, precise writing that somehow makes ghost-trading sound utterly logical.
❤️ How Sarah M. Eden balances heart, humor, & haunting so seamlessly.

TOP MOMENTS (without spoilers)
🍵 The tea scene. (You’ll know it when you get there. Trust me.)
📜 A ghostly confession.
🌬️ When “whispers on the wind” turn out to be far more literal than expected.
💔 The quiet moment when someone finally lets their guard down.
🕯️ That ending. You’ll close the book and whisper, “No. No, no, no—where’s book three?!”

FINAL THOUGHTS
This is Sarah M. Eden at her most clever & creative. The pacing sparkles, the dialogue dances, & every page feels like a mix of Austen & Dickens—with ghosts & emotional damage. It’s witty, atmospheric, & somehow manages to be both cozy & suspenseful.

👉🏻 If you love clean reads with layered characters, sharp humor, & a touch of magic, this series is your next obsession.

🤬 Language / Profanity: None.
💞 Sexual Content / Romance: Clean; Feelings of attraction only.
🥊 Violence: Mild to moderate. There are ghosts, death, and one ghost is described with a decapitated head (though not graphic gore described in detail).
🕊️ Sensitivities / Trigger Warnings: Past abuse and trauma (one character was abused in his past). Death, ghosts, danger to characters.
🎬 TV / Movie Rating Equivalency: ~ PG-13 / TV-14

📖 Book Rating: 4.8 / 5 stars
Witty, whimsical, and wonderfully weird in all the best ways. Sarah M. Eden crafts a world where ghosts have personality, sarcasm has bite, and every line feels intentional. The humor and heart are pitch-perfect, and Mercury himself is a delightful storm of charm and chaos. I docked a tiny sliver only because I wanted more—a few threads and emotional beats felt tantalizingly unfinished (the curse of being book 2 in a series!). Otherwise, it’s hauntingly brilliant and completely binge-worthy.

"The storm is gathering and building."

Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind by Sarah M Eden

I am completely entranced by Mercury Raine's story and this series! The mystery is so intriguing and I NEED book 3! I love that we are getting bit by bit of the mystery of Mercury Raine's past. It definitely keeps you wanting to continue the series.

I loved the small moments and glimpses into the slow burn romance between Mercury and Tacey Wilde. Especially when she takes care of him and stays with him after the Transferral.

Audio Review: Best male narration ever! Jake knocked it out of the park with this one, and I imagine book 1 audio was perfect too. I'm really not kidding, definitely order the audio for this series! Jake does a different, unique voice for each character, including accents. Highly recommend!!

I definitely recommend book 2 and am eagerly anticipating the rest of this series. So what are you waiting for? Preorder or order both of these books before book 3 is announced!

“He descended the stairs at a slow, swaggering pace, his usual expression of confident tranquility firmly in place. Ghosts floated across his path from all directions, swirling around him, filling the space above and below, staggering their passes with the fluid precision of a dance. The display very expertly conveyed that the ghosts of Aventine Manor were plentiful and impressive, and Mercury was the one with access to them all.”

I need the next one NOW! This is such a fun series! Just the right level of spooky (hardly any) and so much fun the whole way through! I cannot get enough of the hilarious ghosts and all the mischief.

I need more answers to the mystery. We did not even get close to enough information in this book, I need to know everything about Mercury Raine!! I need more romance!! I need more!

This book is the second in the series, and it was just as good as the first!! I had to buy the audio after falling in love with the audio for the first book. I have been pushing it on any person who I can get to listen to me 😂😅

Mercury Raine continues his ghost brokerage journey and I just loved seeing more of our favorite ghosts from book 1. And the addition of his new neighbor and partner, Tracey Wilde, was so much fun. I was so glad to see more of her, and I can’t wait to see where their relationship goes 😍

Another huge hit that I highly recommend to anyone! It is great for a wide range of ages too. My 13 yo has been listening and really enjoying the series too!

Thanks to the author for an advance copy! All opinions are my own.

I am not loving this story. This is the second book in the series of novellas. I guess that I just want the story to keep going and to "go" somewhere. I do like the concept. It is very creative. I do like the characters, I just want to the story to develop faster.

The Brief: Mercury Raine is a ghost broker who connects society to the ghost who will bring the most success. After his last clients left him nervous about exposed secrets, this new episode threatens his sleep.

The Debrief: I still say this reads like your favorite addicting BBC series that you’re going to obsess over. The whimsical world of ghosts is fun and totally unique. The writing is snappy and heartfelt while barely unveiling anther layer and I need more of Mercury! I loved how Miss Wilde is learning to be a broker, but making it her own. And can I keep Baby Blue?

The Rhyme: Mercury is the ghost broker everyone wants to hire. When the Padmores arrive can he keep protecting his secrets or will things turn dire?

Highly recommend this novella series. I think you could still pick it up out of order, but more enjoyable with the first. Complimentary copy. My thoughts.

••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The ghosts of Aventine Manor were being particularly cooperative of late, which made Mercury Raine, owner of said manor, particularly nervous.”

-Mercury Raine: a Whisper in the Wind, is the second thrilling installment in the fantastic “ Mercury Raine” novellas and did not disappoint! It is such a clever, witty story full of mystery, secrets, and hints of a potential blooming romance. This story immediately jumps in from book one and is such a treat. Felt like I was back within a world of enchanting friends. Now, I would greatly you begin with reading book one before jumping into book two because, while book one very clearly set the stage and introduces the imaginative world of ghost brokers, ghosts, and the rules that tie them together, this sequel furthers the mystery and intrigue in all the ways. While this may be a novella, it is packed wonderfully with chemistry, humor, and delight among the ghosts, that I adored! I could not devour this delightful story quickly enough as it had me begging for more to come! So good! If time travel was an option, I would be within the pages of book three already. My friends, this unique story is worth the dear read!💯

“The storm is coming. Whispers carry on the wind, Mercury, and there is no way of knowing to what ears that wind will carry them.”

“Her smile grew. He needed to grow accustomed to it or he would soon be unable to accomplish anything when Tacey was in a good mood.”

“The storm is coming. Whispers carry on the wind, Mercury, and there is no way of knowing to what ears that wind will carry them.”

This series is original, witty, and fascinating. Mercury Raine is a ghost broker, severing and attaching bonds to humans and their ghosts, allowing them to have the best of relationships, especially in society. Book 2 brings around new clients and their specters, one of which has secrets threatening to be whispered.

The collections of ghosts are so full of personality and each story builds upon the mysteries of Mercury’s past. Tacey, a broker in training and a close neighbor, is such a delight, while Mercury is so meticulous, kind, and patient. I become more thrilled with each installment, as they are building something spectacular and I’m highly anticipating every reveal.

Sarah M. Eden is a master storyteller and does a glorious job of creating this delightful offering. I’m so eager for more!

I wish this series was never-ending! It is so imaginative and entertaining. I highly recommend the audiobook as the narrator is absolutely fantastic. I started listening at my kitchen table while enjoying my afternoon coffee and before I knew it, the book was over, my coffee was cold, and it was time to start thinking about making supper. I was so completely transported to Aventine Manor through the story and narration that it felt like I had been thrown out in the cold when the final words were spoken. This series is just so good.

Sexual: So mild it's almost not there. Just a few comments about liking someone's smile.

a 4.5 rounded up

These books are turning out to have a very episodic feel to them, which is fun! This time around, Mercury has two new clients, but has the help of Tacey to take some pressure off of him, which he's rather disconcerted to find he likes. Hehehe.

We get more of the mystery behind the 'storm coming' for Mercury in this one, as well as snippets of his history. I was getting stressed on his behalf about random ghosts knowing his background and his life could be imploded because of it. Especially when we get little scenes from his past. I wanted to punch the I got huge vibes from Mercury this time around that his fierce independence is a trauma response, and Tacey is going to help him heal. Which made me super happy.

It's so intriguing to see where this is going. I want to know so badly who Mercury really is! (I mean, he does too, so there's that.) Getting bits and pieces to the mystery of Mercury every book, while laughing at ghost antics, and smirking at the obvious future couple is giving me all the buzzy-happy feelings.

I kinda hope Captain Capitate gets traded next book, just because I too have become uber protective of Baby Blue.

The only problem now is that I have to wait until March for the next installment/episode. Cue me channeling Weeping William.

AUDIOBOOK

Jake Stormoen just made this book even more enjoyable. I loved listening to his accents, and his delivery of certain lines and character voices. He brings this to life in a delightful way. He got a chuckle from me with how dramatically he delivered Weeping William's lines. It was fun to hear him do an Italian accent for Senora Bellona and Irish for the Scholar, then we get a new accent that sounded sort of Russian/Romanian for the Professor. It's just buckets of fun to listen to! I'm glad I'll have these audios to "re-read" while waiting for the next installment!

Another fun, witty, exciting installment in the Mercury Raine series! A Whisper in the Wind picks right up where Ghost Broker left off with more mystery, more mischievous ghosts, more delightful humor, & a hint of romance brewing. I absolutely love this series Sarah M. Eden has created & can’t wait to read more.

New clients visit Mercury hoping to trade ghosts. But, when one of the ghosts reveals knowledge about Mercury’s past, he has to pull off a complicated trade to ensure she stays at Aventine Manor & everyone is happy. No easy task when dealing with very different ghosts with different personalities. As more is revealed about Mercury’s tragic childhood, the mystery deepens.

Miss Huddleston is back as well, who now goes by the name of Tacey Wilde. Hoping to become a ghost broker herself, she tries to learn all she can from Mercury. Tacey shows an innate talent for dealing with clients & ghosts & soon becomes a favorite of everyone at Aventine Manor, including Mercury. I’m hoping to see their relationship take a romantic turn.

The ghosts are so much fun! I love their distinct personalities including Baby Blue, Weeping William, Granny Grey, & new arrival The Cream Canary. Each one has secrets to unravel especially Granny & The Cream Canary, as well as links to Mercury’s past. I can’t wait to learn more in the next installment.

The audiobooks are amazingly narrated by Jake Stormoen who did a phenomenal job bringing each character to life. The first book was so much fun to listen to & I’m so excited to listen to this latest book.

Highly recommend this fantastic series! As a side note, these books are fun spooky & I’d easily recommend them to teen readers. I received an advanced copy from the author, but also purchased the ebook through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are completely my own & provided voluntarily.

“The storm is coming. Whispers carry on the wind, Mercury, and there is no way of knowing to what ears that wind will carry them.”

Mercury Raine is the most sought-after ghost broker in all the kingdom—haunted (literally) by more ghosts and secrets than anyone should have. When his new neighbor, Tacey Wilde, and her all-too-knowing ghost cross his path, Mercury knows he can’t just let them walk away. But when a mysterious ghost arrives—one who somehow remembers him despite never meeting him—the real danger begins.

Okay, this series has been SUCH a fun one to read this fall! Perfectly paranormal with a touch of spookiness—but still cozy and lighthearted enough that I can sleep at night. It’s the ultimate mood read: quick, imaginative, and full of heart. As the holidays start ramping up, I’ve loved being able to escape into Mercury’s world for a little while without losing my grip on real life.

The ghosts in this story have completely stolen my heart. That’s the magic of Sarah M. Eden’s writing—she knows how to guide us through every storm with hope, humor, and heart.

If you’re in the mood for something unique, atmospheric, and easy to fall into—this is your next read. Start with Book 1 if you haven’t already; you’ll want the full experience!

Mercury Raine: Whisper in the Wind is available now wherever books are sold!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Content/Trigger: slight suspense, ghosts, romance—awareness of each other and light flirtations.

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Mercury Raine: Ghost Broker (Book 1)
Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind (Books 2)
Series: Mercury Raine By Sarah M. Eden
⭐⭐⭐⭐

📝 My Thoughts:
These novellas introduce such a unique concept! I have never read a story about a "ghost broker" before, and the world building is incredibly creative. In this version of Regency England, ghosts are the ultimate social currency. Mercury Raine is a fascinating protagonist, witty, successful, and deeply protective of his spectral "entourage." The pace is quick and engaging, though I did find myself wishing the mystery of Mercury's past moved a bit faster.

💖 Why I Loved It:
The witty banter between Mercury and his ghosts is gold! Each ghost has such a distinct personality, from the dramatic Signora Bellona to the sweet Baby Blue. I loved the "found family" dynamic at Aventine Manor. It is a lighthearted, cozy mystery with just enough tension to keep you turning pages.

🔖 Favorite Quote:
"Revealing the secrets of your past will change the direction of your future."

📌 Final Verdict:
For fans of sweet historical romance with a paranormal twist! It is best to read these in order as they follow a continuous mystery regarding Mercury’s identity. Recommended for anyone who loves Sarah M. Eden's signature charm but wants something a little more "spirited." I am definitely ready for book 3 to see how the secrets of the orphanage finally come to light!

“The storm is gathering and building.”
“And Aventine Manor is the eye.”
“Oh no, Mercury, Aventine isn’t the eye, you are.”

I love me some ghosts and this was just plain fun! This novella was another quick installment in a fantastically fun series. It’s inspired by the Penny Dreadfuls… it’s a quick release novella series where we will get shorter installments close together & the entire series will released in a period of a year. Set in Victorian England where ghosts are all the rage. Mercury Raine is the most sought after ghost broker in all the kingdom, with more ghosts than anyone knows and more secrets than one person should have. And those secrets are coming to haunt him. With ghosts arriving literally on his doorstep with secrets about Mercury that even he doesn’t know about. It’s extremely important to keep these ghosts close to him to protect himself & those around him. It’s a unique world full of interesting ghosts, intrigue, a bit of mystery & I can’t wait to see where this story goes. I loved this installment and can’t wait for book three to come out in March 🤗

“For all his bluster, he was proud of the life he'd built. And even though, individually, he sometimes found his ghostly companions a lot to handle, taken as a whole, they were a great deal of fun. And he cared about them.”

Mercury Raine: A Whisper In The Wind
Mercury Raine, book 2

I’m convinced Sarah is a magician, or a supremely intelligent being. The way she can weave a story seamlessly and venture through genre’s and innovate her own is jaw dropping to witness.

I’m hooked. Book one was intriguing and mysterious, this book delves deeper and you come to love the characters even more!

Mercury’s protection over his ghosts is so sweet.

After being alarmed by Granny Grey’s reveals in book one, he’s isn’t sure the path to take to keep his past hidden for the safety of all those around him.

A couple comes in want of a transfer and soon after another gentleman is there too. One ghost, the Cream Canary suddenly has “phantom memories” and it’ll be a tricky task to get her to stay at Aventine Manor with him.

So much more is revealed and a unique transfer takes place. I can’t wait for more to discover these delightfully wondrous reads.

This second book in the Mercury Raine series is the perfect cozy/spooky read for the Halloween season!

Picking up right where book one left off, Mercury is now training his sweet new neighbor, Tacey Wilde, in the art of being a ghost broker. At the same time, he’s trying to uncover the truth about his mysterious past, while at the same time making sure those secrets stay buried! But when a new ghostly arrival seems to know more about where he came from, the danger of his past being exposed grows stronger than ever!
@sarah_m_eden nails that mix of regency charm, humor, and supernatural intrigue, making it fun, witty, and just eerie enough for Halloween.

It’s got heart, suspense, and the perfect hint of romance! A great follow-up to book one and a must read if you love ghostly adventures with style! Plus it will leave you anxious to know what comes next!

Thanks so much to the publisher and Sarah for the advanced copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — Absolutely Enchanting
Mercury Raine: A Whisper in the Wind is a mysterious, enchanting, and beautifully crafted addition to Sarah Eden’s series. As the second installment, it deepens the world in all the right ways—pulling me further into its atmosphere of intrigue and quiet magic.
I absolutely loved watching the characters continue to grow. Each one feels vivid, layered, and emotionally engaging, making it impossible not to become fully invested in their journeys. The unfolding mystery kept me turning pages, and the gentle threads of wonder woven through the story made it feel both captivating and timeless.
A truly delightful read—one that lingers in the mind long after the final page. I can’t wait for the next one!

When I reviewed the first in this series I gave it 3-stars and wasn't certain how I wanted to rate it. It is like rating a book after only reading a couple of chapters. I am still a bit torn, as I don't know how many novellas will be in this series, and I don't know how the story will play out, so I continued with the 3-stars.

That being said, I would recommend the series to anyone. It is a fun read, and very different from Ms. Eden's usualy stories. I am looking forward to the next one(s), but after getting the first two within a month, having to wait until March for #3, having no idea how many there will be, or when they will be released, you might want to wait for them all to be available and binge read them.

I love the banter between Tacey and Mercury! It is so fun seeing Mercury and Tacey work together as new people come to Aventine Manor to swap ghosts.

It's so fun getting to know more of the ghosts and seeing how Mercury helps the people wanting to swap ghosts find ones that are compatible with them and are what they are looking for.

I also really enjoy getting to know Mercury more through the new ghost in each book that has phantom memories about him.

This is the second book in the Mercury Raine series. They are best read in order.

I was so happy that this second book in the Mercury Raine series came out so quickly! And even better, the audio book released the same day.

This one is definitely worth listening to! I loved the way the Narrator read it. His voices for the different ghosts were so great. And his voice is easy to listen to.

Mercury Raine is such a great character. I love the way he watches out for his ghosts and all of those in his care. Mercury has secrets that he has to keep from those around him. I love the way the reader gets some knowledge about those secrets in this installment of his story.

I can't wait to find out what will happen with Mercury and his ghosts next!

I have read all of the regency books by Sarah M. Eden, and loved almost every one. The Dread Penny Society series was something in a different tone, and it was quite unique among the regency/victorian books I have read. I really loved it for the gothic feel and the mystery. Ghost broker gives me the same kind of vibe, even though the sense of danger is not that high (at least so far). It has a unique theme yet again, which is rather fun. I also loved the humor in the author's writing style (which I have appreciated in many of her books). So I must say that I am thoroughly enjoying the series. The only complaint I have is that the books are too short and too far apart :)

This series is honestly so cleverly done. I love how each installment peels back another layer of the story—it’s not something I see often, and it makes the reading experience feel really fresh. This one was especially fun and entertaining, and I liked getting to know more of the ghosts and their personalities. They're all so distinct and add a lot of charm (and chaos) in the best way.

Now I’m just sitting here wondering: what’s going to happen next? Because things are definitely building, and I have a feeling we’re in for a wild ride.

Sarah’s imagination and ability to story tell never ceases to amaze me. This new series is definitely a favorite of mine. I LOVED An Unlikely Match, and I could hardly wait for the next ghost story written by Sarah. This series is so riveting and has me hooked. I am eager to find out the secrets and mystery behind Mercury’s origins!
