Supergay!: A Memoir

Rate this book
Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear glitter.

Frankie Grande always knew he was different. He just didn't know it was his superpower. Growing up glittery in a grayscale world, he found refuge in the fantasy realms of rainbow belts, telepathic mutants, and intergalactic girlbosses. (Looking at you, Rainbow Brite.) But behind the show tunes and sparkles was a lonely little boy fighting big, scary feelings—about identity, addiction, abandonment, and belonging.

In Supergay!, Frankie turns his hot mess history into comic-book canon, reframing every heartbreak and hard moment as part of a campy, chaotic, deeply human hero's journey. With outrageous honesty and unapologetic humor, he tells the story of how a fabulous queer nerd learned to stop hiding, start healing, and fully embrace the power of being too much.

This isn't just a memoir. It's a technicolor call to arms for anyone who's ever felt weird, othered, or alone. Because in a world that wants you to tone it down, the bravest thing you can do is turn the volume all the way up.

I’m interactively reading this book with both my hard cover copy and this audible recording and it’s PHENOMENAL! If you have always wanted to be a part of a Grande dinner party this is the book for you! With both the book and audiobook you get the real and raw Frankie as his hard truth hits both your funny bone and the deepest parts of your heart. I’m laughing and crying and loving every moment and super hero reference! Put on your rainbow boots, cape, tights and join the fun!!! Oh and don’t forget your nerd glasses you won’t be disappointed as Frankie caresses your cheeks as you fly through the pages, cape flapping and clapping behind you. We all have superhero’s in our life and this book shows you how that is possible 🥰🥰

Wow!!! Thank you for the opportunity to listen to this and get the chance to review!! Frankie Grande’s story is amazing and crazy. My family are huge Frankie Grande fans due to Henry Danger and Frankini is our favorite villain. That being said I loved the way he puts the superhero’s to different events to his life.
Life in sobriety is hard and constantly needs to be worked on. I know even during Covid lockdown how hard that can be especially being stuck with family.
My favorite part of this whole audiobook is his narration and his musical breakout!!
I cannot wait for others to hear and/or read his story!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ALC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

I actually really enjoyed this memoir. While the writing itself wasn’t particularly lyrical or beautiful, the author’s voice felt authentic and honest, which made the story resonate with me. Sometimes a book doesn’t need perfect prose to leave an impact, and this was one of those cases.

I didn’t really know him other than as Ariana Grande’s brother, but he had a whole life before that! Interesting, sad, entertaining. The audiobook was very fun to listen to!

I was super excited for the first 10%, like, wow, his voice is super engaging. I like the friendly "talking to a good friend" tone. Then I had to push myself not to DNF... Aside from self-congratulations (which don't read me wrong: I love someone proud of himself! but I won't read 320 pages of it, even less when there's absolutely 0 awareness of his own privileges). Then there is the ridiculous amount of HP references in a gay memoir... I can understand one or two; you grew up with it, but that was every chapter. I'm sure fans of Frankie Grande will like it.

Thank you, Netgalley and RBmedia for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review

I went into *Supergay* not knowing a huge amount about Frankie Grande beyond the public-facing version of him. I knew he had been on *Big Brother*, had a presence on YouTube and reality TV, was connected to the Broadway world, and of course, I knew him as Ariana Grande’s brother. Because of that, I think I had unconsciously thought of him as more of a larger-than-life personality than a fully dimensional person.

This memoir changed that.

What impressed me most about *Supergay* was Frankie’s commitment to living authentically, and how clearly that comes through in both the writing and the narration. His voice is bold, theatrical, emotional, and honest — but underneath the sparkle, there is real vulnerability. He does not shy away from discussing his mistakes, his struggles, his ambition, his identity, or the complicated realities of being both highly visible and often misunderstood.

I especially appreciated his brutal honesty and self-reflection. Frankie writes with a sense of ownership over his life: the choices he has made, the pain he has experienced, the ways he has grown, and the achievements he has fought for. The memoir feels less like a celebrity trying to polish an image and more like a person looking back with clarity, accountability, humor, and pride.

The audiobook narration also adds a lot. Frankie’s personality naturally lends itself to audio, and hearing him tell his own story makes the emotional moments feel more immediate and sincere. His energy is unmistakable, but so is his heart.

*Supergay* gave me a much fuller understanding of someone I previously only knew in fragments. It is honest, entertaining, reflective, and unapologetically itself — which feels very fitting for Frankie Grande.

3.5⭐️ I’ve been obsessed with Frankie ever since I watched him on BB16 in 2014 & the audiobook was so him that it really was a huge selling point for me. This diva’s aura is truly one of a kind & he’s such a bright, bubbly light. The way he incorporated his love for all things superhero & fantasy throughout the book was so fun & whimsy, loved it!

I knew some of his background, but I loved hearing about his adventures doing celebrity relations at The Box & how he got his start on Broadway, wayyyy before he was known to many as “Ariana Grande’s brother”. I knew he was sober, but didn’t know about his struggles with addiction (which is a good chunk of the book), so take extra care if that’s a sensitive subject for you.

I felt like we got high-level, goofy silly background on a lot of topics, but I wish we got to dive a little deeper into more the “feeling” of these experiences rather than just the experience itself.

Overall, this was a fun, upbeat read & is exactly what you’d expect from Frankie! Wouldn’t be top of my list for recommending to someone, but if someone is a fan of Frankie’s or of the idea of “making it in New York”, I think they’d definitely enjoy!

Also, if I had a nickel for every book I’ve read/listened to so containing Big Brother this year, I’d have probably 35¢, which doesn’t seem like a lot but lowkey feels like it hahaha (in the best way give me more tea).

I was especially pleased to receive this audiobook during Pride Month, and it turned out to be a really entertaining listen. Going into this memoir, I knew very little about Frankie Grande beyond being Ariana Grande's brother, so I enjoyed getting to know him on his own terms and learning about the experiences that shaped his life and career.

One of the highlights of the audiobook was Frankie’s narration. His personality shines through every chapter, making the listening experience feel authentic, engaging, and often laugh-out-loud funny. I particularly appreciated hearing more about his Broadway career, as well as his honest discussions about addiction and recovery. His openness adds depth to the memoir and helps balance the more lighthearted moments.

This is a fun, candid, and energetic memoir that doesn't shy away from explicit content or personal stories. While there are plenty of laughs throughout, there are also meaningful reflections on resilience, self-discovery, and finding joy in being unapologetically yourself.

I would recommend Supergay! to anyone looking for an entertaining celebrity memoir audiobook with plenty of personality. If you're a fan of humorous, heartfelt memoirs and enjoy hearing authors tell their own stories, this is definitely worth picking up.

An enjoyable, quick listen during a time I got to drive a lot.

Frankie Grande's memoir (at only 40-something!) is a thing of self-aware privilege - he grew up rich and he's very open about that and the opportunities that provided for him. He's also worked really hard within those opportunities despite the downfall into addiction (one could say he worked really hard at staying addicted before he worked to get out of it too).

The only background I had on Grande was: I saw an episode of Henry Danger a million years ago in a hotel during an anime convention and I was like wow, they have a gay villain on Nickelodeon? This is great (the whole show felt gay but you know). I didn't know a THING past that except he's Ariana Grande's big brother (I didn't even know he was ON Big Brother) which didn't mean much to me, so I learned a lot and I had a good time! It's been a minute since I listened to a self-narrated memoir and it was refreshing and felt very like, 'this is who I am, like it or not, no apologies here," which for the most part was great! The only part that had me going :/ with my actual face was that there are SO MANY Harry Potter references and love here in the year 2026 when its author has done more financially and politically to hurt people like Grande than almost anyone else in modern times. (He does give a disclaimer at the beginning of chapter 1, but I still hated to hear it).

Thank you to Recorded Books for the ALC for review!

I rate all memoirs 5 stars because this is someone's life and personal thoughts and I'm honored that they want to share them with me/the entire world.

First & Foremost, I just feel like Frankie is someone I want to be best friends with. I feel like I was just on a FaceTime call with him because he was so vibrant and expressive through a recorded audiobook. Definitely one of my favorite memoir listens.

The commitment Frankie has to living authentically and irreparably as himself is so commendable. He is bold, theatrical, vibrant and loves to have a good time, but he is also vulnerable and emotional and the entire memoir is just very honest in a way that was very memorable.

I think Frankie probably lives the life of 'Ariana Grande's big brother' and I think that this, at least for me, parted him from her. Yes, that's his little sister, but he is so much more than that. What I admired most about this though is just Frankie's brutal honesty. He writes about the choices he made and the pain he experienced, but not from a view of trying to excuse them but taking ownership for them and the way he has grown and fought for his achievements now.

I've always been a fan of both him, and Ari, but after reading this I am definitely more of a fan now! Supergay will give you a clearer picture / fill in the missing pieces of what you knew of Frankie.

Def recommend & HIGHLY recommend consuming via audiobook!

I would call the first half of this book self help and the second half memoir. I like Frankie Grande. I liked hearing his clever comparisons of making it through this world with that of superheroes using their powers. I loved the comic strips throughout the book. Unfortunately though, I didn't find this book super relatable, mostly because of the rose-tinted, glass-half-full spin on everything. He has a good life. He has a positive outlook. He has a supportive family that celebrates him and is clearly there for him at all times. I absolutely love that for him, but it doesn't make for an engaging memoir. Like I said, I feel like he puts a more positive spin on adversity in this book. It almost reads like, "you too can go through a decade of serious addiction and come out on the other side after a month of rehab and instantly go onto bigger and better career heights!" It feels artificial at times.

Beyond that, there are so many interesting events he brings up that left me wanting more, like what about the spider incident!? The part about Brooke Shields stood out to me as well since I recently read her memoir and I don't recall her ever mentioning Frankie Grande being the one to convince her to do a one woman show! He deserves credit for that!

I read the ebook version of this, and I enjoyed it. I suspect this book is even more entertaining in audio format.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance listening copy in exchange for an honest review.

I initially requested this memoir solely because of Frankie Grande's last name, but I had no idea how much I would enjoy hearing the stories that shaped him into the person he is today.

One of the highlights of this audiobook was that Frankie narrated it himself. His personality shines through every chapter, and hearing him tell his own story added an extra layer of authenticity and emotion. As a performer, he brought great energy to the narration, using inflection, humor, and emotion in all the right places to make the listening experience engaging and memorable.

Frankie does not shy away from difficult topics, including addiction, mental health struggles, and suicidal thoughts. He shares these experiences with honesty and vulnerability, making the memoir feel deeply personal and genuine. Despite covering some heavy subjects, the book remains entertaining, uplifting, and full of heart.

I would recommend this memoir to fans of Frankie Grande, as well as anyone who enjoys candid and inspiring celebrity memoirs. It was an engaging listen that left me with a greater appreciation for his resilience, growth, and journey.

I went into this with basically no background on Frankie. In fact I was a couple chapters in when I realized the Ariana relation. I was drawn in by the fun cover and was interested in the "coming out" story of the book. I felt like his writing was him basically trying to have a conversation about his life and to show off his comic book nerdiness. He acknowledges his privilege, but I am not sure he really understands how different his life would have been without that privilege. But he owns it and is making the most out of it. Halfway through the book, I wondered why the title was about his sexuality when the book felt more focused on his addiction - but I thought he brought it around at the end quite well. I'm not sure this will have broad appeal. If you followed Frankie, most of this is probably not news, since he lives very publicly (or seems to based on what he says in the book and some quick googling) and if you aren't a Frankie fan well it probably won't appeal enough to pickup. Thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy.

I never like to rate a memoir lower than 5 stars because who am I to judge somebody else’s story? It’s their truth and bless them for speaking it. However, this entire story felt so fake.

I received the ALC from NetGalley so I heard the book directly from Frankie’s mouth. I honestly think that made it worse. I may have enjoyed it better if I was reading the physical copy maybe? That’s not a jab at his actual voice but it was the way everything felt like a performance or funny even when it was a serious topic like drug addiction.

It was also very cringeworthy to listen to him claim proudly how he grew up so privileged (and good for him) but doesn’t comprehend just how much different his life would have been without that leg up. From his career and even into his addiction and rehab. I don’t think he truly takes accountability for anything, it felt like a joke.

The only time I felt like he was being sincere was when he was talking about his family. You truly can feel the love there.

I appreciate his truth. I didn’t love the tone.

As a huge fan of Frankie Grande, I was thrilled that he chose to narrate his own audiobook. Hearing him tell his story elevated the listening experience and added an extra layer of authenticity and emotion. I've enjoyed watching him on television and most recently loved seeing him shine at Bucks County Playhouse in The Rocky Horror Picture Show—and I hope he returns so even more fans can experience his incredible talent live.

Frankie's personality shines through every chapter. As a performer, he brings tremendous energy to the narration, using humor, inflection, and heartfelt emotion to make his memoir engaging and memorable from beginning to end. He doesn't shy away from difficult topics, including addiction, mental health struggles, and suicidal thoughts.

Fans of, as well as anyone who enjoys memoirs this is a must listen! His personal growth, and the journey he had is not to be ignored.

Listen on 06 / 23 /2026.

If you're at all familiar with actor, singer, producer, host, reality-star, and internet influencer Frankie Grande, you will love how his fun-loving personality shines in this intimate and vulnerable memoir. If you have no idea who he is, that's okay because you'll fall in love with this highly entertaining reflection. As a fan of the tv show Big Brother, that's where I first fell in love with him, but through this story I learned so much more about his origin story, rise to fame, struggles with drugs and alcohol, recovery, and love story. Listening to this audiobook in his own words, I feel like his newest BFF.

It's beautiful and incisive. I loved hearing about his close-knit family and funny anecdotes he shares with his sister—Ariana Grande. But mostly, I love how he refers to himself as a superhero with his toolbelt of superpowers. That's pure self-love and such a wonderful thing that people can take away from this book—to embrace the journey, learn from each and every thing that life throws at us, and lean into all of the superpowers within us.

My newest bucket list "to do": see Frankie Grande perform on Broadway ASAP.

4.25 ⭐️ overall

I'm cracking up at myself because I'm older and had no idea who Frankie Grande was, but my book club is celebrating pride this month and I love this cover. What a great story! And so positive.
The initial focus is on growing up and figuring out he's different, and it feels like this story is always a little different for everyone. Frankie's mom and aunt and famous sister ended up being big supports, but not everyone has such positive influences.
Frankie also had struggles with addiction, and I could relate to that. Again, finding support was a major theme.
My kid loves Big Brother and I can't wait to see if she knows this exuberant personality. I looked him up and he's such an adorable kid and he and his husband are a beautiful couple. The Star Wars wedding was brilliant and I loved their Chewbacca looking dog.
Frankie does the narration himself and brings passion and enthusiasm to everything. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this

Genuinely a hilarious and deep experience listening to this book.
I have known of Frankie for years and loved how he always seemed so out and proud and I loved that even before realizing I myself am queer.
Hearing his story told from his own mouth holds a beautiful intimate understanding of who Frankie is. It also made it feel like he was telling me his life story like we were sitting on a couch and he was giving me all the tea.
Even though I have known of Frankie for years (primarily because of Ariana) so I had no idea of just how much he has done in his life and how hard he has worked. While this book isn't about Ariana it was interesting to hear about some of these big moments (Manchester particularly) from his perspective,
I am so glad Frankie had the means and was able to get clean and rehab.

Thank you so much to Netgalley and RB media for the opportunity of listening to this audiobook early.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️¾ (4.75/5)

Supergay!: A Memoir by Frankie Grande is a look at his female-centric upbringing in the wake of his parents' divorce, his love for Sci-Fi, comic books, and Harry Potter, to his early love for theatrics, Broadway, and dancing, plus so much more, with a strong focus on his sexual orientation. The book takes readers through a deeply personal account of survival.

Before listening, I knew Frankie performed on Broadway and watched him compete on CBS's Big Brother. While I appreciated the moments of raw honesty and vulnerability, Frankie certainly has a flare for the dramatics, making even the sincerest moments have a bit of levity. The audiobook felt fun, the narration, performed by Frankie himself, was clear, engaging, and filled with lively inflections that kept me hooked from start to finish, making it such an enjoyable listening experience.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia / Recorded Books for the audio ARC! All opinions are my own.

I came into this audiobook not knowing very much about Frankie other than the fact he is related to Ariana Grande and I was surprised and intrigued to learn more about him.

It’s difficult to rate an autobiography so I do tend to remain neutral.

Frankie acknowledges early on that he was privileged and grew up well off which is a refreshing however he doesn’t seem to recognise how much this impacts his life compared to someone not as privileged. It was interesting to learn about his struggles with addiction and he was very honest which I commend him for.

Overall I enjoyed it and I do think when the author is also the narrator it being the autobiography to life a lot more than having someone else read it for him,

Frankie states he is a born performer and I have to say that hearing his narration he is 100% correct in that assessment.

Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review

Before listening to Super Gay, I only knew Frankie Grande from his time on Big Brother, where I was a big fan. I hadn’t followed much of his life afterward, so I was surprised to learn about his struggles with addiction, sobriety journey, marriage, and everything else he’s experienced.

This memoir was honest, funny, and heartfelt. I highly recommend the audiobook because Frankie narrates it himself, and his personality really shines through. Hearing the stories in his own voice made the experience even more impactful.

One message that really stayed with me was his point that using someone’s pronouns is such a small effort that can make someone feel seen and safe. I appreciated that perspective.

If you enjoy memoirs, especially those narrated by the author, I definitely recommend giving this audiobook a listen. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to seeing what Frankie Grande does next.

☀️Thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia for the ARC for this audiobook☀️

This book is unapologetically and flamboyantly queer 🌈🏳️‍🌈 it's also unapologetically and flamboyantly Frankie Grande. The audiobook (narrated by the author) is even more so. It exudes and effervesces.

The book is structured mostly chronologically through Frankie's life in a series of topical essays about his journey with sexuality, the entertainment industry, and drug use/sobriety. Woven throughout is his love for family.

Fans of Frankie Grande will undoubtedly love this frank and honest look behind the curtain at his life. For folks (like me) who haven't been as acquainted with him before this will still find plenty to enjoy!

In the narration, Frankie sings and giggles and infused the story with even more of himself. It's campy in the best and gayest way. It can be a bit much, but he owns it.

Millennial nerds will dig all the pop culture references.

I know this memoir won’t be for everyone but I just loved it. I first saw Frankie on his Big Brother season and absolutely adored him then. I’ve followed him a bit here and there over the years but had no idea of his struggles with drugs and his sexuality when his young. This is a very candid memoir and he shares a lot of details that might be uncomfortable for some readers. For me? No, it made me just love him more. He is raw and real in this book. Listening to him tell his story was fun and I can tell he is genuine. I just love his personality. I want to be friends with Frankie. I’m not kidding. Hey Frankie, if you see this review and you ever feel like hanging out with a straight girl in her 40’s who just loves your vibe, look me up. I will go watch every Broadway musical with you.

I unfortunately had to DNF at 10% in on audio. Supergay! by Frankie Grande is not for the weak. I read the reviews first and they were not looking so hot, so I thought "How bad could it be?" THEY WERE RIGHT. This is an awful blend of Frankie's life story and weird pop culture references. He compares his power of manipulation to hypnosis and brags about mastering it in early elementary school, while also making hyper-specific references to star wars, bat-man, x-men, you name it. Not to mention homeboy repeats himself, sooo much and he's sung three times in less than 10% of the book. If I wanted to listen to a grande singing I would listen to his sister. (No hate to Ari, love her). So this personally just felt like a bad narcissistic pod-cast episode. While I was hoping it could feel like a fun kiki like Paper Dolls did by Dylan Mulvaney. Hopes and expectations were not met for this one.

I went into this knowing who Frankie was, and knowing he was kind of a meme at this point for being cringey and over the top, hyper-feminine gay.

What I didn’t know and learned from this book was how deep his struggle with addiction was and how it impacted so many aspects of his life. Frankie doesn’t shy away from owning that he grew up extremely privileged and had access to a lot and how his strive for perfectionism lead into a spiral of addiction all while discovering his sexuality, exploring non-traditional relationships and watching your little sister skyrocket to stardom.

Was some of the writing a little millennial cringe? Of course… it’s Frankie. But it was also funny, fun, full of heart and depth.

I love Frankie Grande. I have since his season of Big Brother. I’ve seen him in a few of his stints on broadway and had the honor of meeting him after a performance of Cruel Intentions the musical! I enjoyed his story, but I also was left wanting a little more depth. I thought his story of addiction was really compelling, but I wished he had gone just a little deeper. I hate to say but it felt a little surface level. It is his story though and he gets to decide how much of it he shares but I would have loved to hear a more earnest account of his struggle. I loved the behind the scenes of Big Brother, of course. And I loved listening to this as he reads it and hearing Frankie’s story from Frankie himself was important. If you’re a Frankie fan, definitely give it a listen, don’t expect too much depth.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Frankie Grande’s memoir, I got this from a bookcon! But I was pleasantly surprised by his crazy life. It was fun to read especially because I don't know much about him. He frames his life story, including his struggles with identity and addiction, through the lens of a superhero comic. It made his journey feel more accessible and empowering. He doesn't shy away from the hard stuff, but he keeps the campy vibes and energy he’s known for. If you’ve ever felt like too much for the people around you, this is the perfect read. Def recommended. I picked this for my summer bingo to read a memoir!

Trigger warnings: Heavy mentions of alcohol and drug abuse, family death

I enjoyed getting to listen to Frankie’s Story and understand how he came out and what his life was like as a young child. In this memoir, he talks about his relationship with his family, his time on Broadway, Big Brother, coming out to his family and losing family the night before a Broadway performance. He also talks about his sobriety journey which I absolutely love. I loved hearing his journey and how he repaired relationships when he got sober

I knew very little about Frankie Grande only the things her sister Ariana shared about him. I can now say I am a big fan of his. So glad I listened to the audiobook version, listened to it all in one day cleaning. Listening to Frankie tell his story and the voices her gave certain people on his life was entertaining to hear as much as it was listening to the stories. I feel like I learned so much about Frankie Grande outside of being Ariana’s brother. I know there a people who are fans of him separating the two but this book is truly great to learn more about him no matter how much (or little) you know of him. I would highly recommend listening to the audiobook if you are a fan of them.
