My mother was given this 1911 retelling of Shakespeare's tales when she was a child, and it still rests on her shelves. When we emptied the bookcase for its annual spring cleaning, Mom would tell us that she had read a couple of the tales, but she never read any of them to us. Nor did she say anything about enjoying the tales.

When I was in high school, and Shakespeare appeared on our reading lists, I'd pull out this volume and pre-read the assigned plays. It was a handy reference, much like a dictionary. So, yes, this book served a purpose, but I never read any of it for pleasure. I came away with the belief that Shakespeare was intended for older and wiser readers.

This book was a nice way for me to learn the plots of some of Shakespeare's plays. I wished that the comedy and tragedy were more mixed, instead of clumps of comedy and clumps of tragedy.

This would be a good way to introduce kids to Shakespeare. Obviously the real thing is 1000 times but good for a recap of the plays. I don't always agree with the interpretation, but that happens in many plays produced as well.

i always desired to read Shakespeare's compositions . i particularly liked Othello and Hamlet.but the stories lacked explanation . i guess it would be more interesting in plays . i also liked the mid night summer.
