In A Handful of Dreams, Barbara Hazard takes the sordid, tragic real life story of Irish novelist Marguerite Gardner, and weaves it into a romantic fairy tale that is uneven but compelling. Below, the portrait of the real life Countess Blessington, painted by Thomas Lawrence, who also makes a cameo in A Handful of Dreams to paint the portrait of Hazard's plucky, strong, maligned but forever surviving protagonist Sally Desmond:

I've read a few Barbara Hazard books that I have enjoyed. This one, not so much. It was just too sad for me... It made a lot more sense when I read her note at the end about it being based off a true story.

Barbara Hazard was born, raised, and educated in New England. She studied music in addition to her formal training in art and added the writing of Regencies to her many talents in 1978. Her other hobbies include listening to classical music, reading, quilting, cross-country skiing, and paddle tennis.
