On a quest for revenge, Glenna arrives in the Colorado wilderness where she discovers a passion like she has never known in the arms of Kane Morgan, the man she believes is responsible for her father's death. Reissue.
Connie Mason or Cara Miles is the best-selling author of more than fifty historical romances and novellas. Her tales of passion and adventure are set in exotic as well as American locales. Connie was named Story Teller of the Year in 1990 by Romantic Times and was awarded Career Achievement award in the Western category by Romantic Times in 1994. Connie makes her home in Tarpon Springs, Florida with her husband Jerry.
Prior to her first published work in 1984, Connie was a full time homemaker. Always an avid reader, writing was one of Connie's dreams.
In 1995 Connie was featured on a segment of the CBS news show 48 Hours, a television production that devoted an entire program to the romance novel industry. Connie was also featured in an article published by National Inquirer.
In addition to writing and traveling, Connie enjoys telling anyone who will listen about her three children and nine grandchildren, and sharing memories of her years living abroad in Europe and Asia as the wife of a career serviceman. In her spare time Connie enjoys reading, dancing, playing bridge and freshwater fishing with her husband.
This is an oldie western historical with a couple of "forced seduction" scenes that would've been termed rape these days, but used to be considered "romantic" as long as the heroine enjoyed it even though she said No all the way.
Furthermore, Kane is one of those men who's quick to blame the heroine and act before listening to explanations, so not the ideal hero. And even though Glenna is not a total doormat, she definitely act quite stupidly on a number of occasions. So, to me, this is one of those books that hasn't stood the test of time.
I just loved this book! It had a few minor flaws, not even worth mentioning, but other than that it was great entertainment, kind of like watching one of those old movie sagas that combined adventure, romance and drama, and made one great film! (And in this case, there's some hot love scenes, as well.)
The H and h, Glenna and Kane, have their moments of misunderstandings and separations, but nothing too overboard, no over the top anger and accusations, though Kane did let his pride get in the way of listening to Glenna try and explain what happened with her and the villain, Judd Martin (I won't give anything away, you'll have to read and find out).
Also, since this was written around 1990, things had thankfully toned down, so rapes became close calls and infidelity became momentary weakness but no going too far. Twice Glenna's almost raped, but the first time she's rescued, the second time she rescues herself. As far as being unfaithful, if you count Glenna kissing another man when she finds out Kane has a fiancee, or Kane fondling Ellen (his soon to be ex-fiancee), or Kane deciding to bed a prostitute when he thinks Glenna's betrayed him, but not finishing what he started, then there's infidelity, but it's a far cry from the old "one true love but many lovers" days of early HR, thank you God!
That's all I'm going to say about this novel, which takes place in both Denver and Philadelphia, except to say it kept up a great pace, didn't get bogged down or go for melodrama, and made you really care about the MC, as well as some minor characters who added to the story.
This was a good one, with enough drama and excitement to hold your interest, without going too overboard and melodramatic. I liked the h, Glenda, as she searches for answers about her father's death in 19thc Colorado. There's a lot about miners and claim jumpers, and a likely suspect (Judd, the villain in the story), but how to prove it? By working for him, of course, and trying to get information.
Glenna and the H, Kane, have a stormy relationship, as they fall in love quickly (a lot of hot sex scenes), yet both are prone to jealous outbursts of temper, particularly Kane, where he'll leave in a rage and not listen to a word Glenna says (or tries to say).
There's also the OM and OW, or two of each, in this case. There's Ellen, Kane's social climbing fiancée from back east, whom Glenna finds out about, before he had a chance to break it off. Then there's nice guy Eric, who Glenna paid some attention to, when she thought she had no future with Kane. Dance hall girl, Pearl has a thing for Kane, and Judd has ulterior motives for wanting Glenna, then becomes obsessed with her. Both he and Ellen cause enough trouble for Kane and Glenna.
That's all I'll say, except to recommend that you read it.
I'm a big fan of Connie Mason but this book just wasn't for me. I struggled to finish it. The characters all had something going on and each plot was different so this made connecting with the story difficult. The H/H just made me shake my head in aggravation. To much angst from beginning to end.
All I remember is that the heroine is mistaken for a lady of the night by our hero (who is at the time engaged to someone out east) and practically rapes her under a wagon while it's raining. Far from being outraged or traumatized, she ends up enjoying it and doesn't regret it. She becomes officially TSTL. And he's the asshole that doesn't regret it either and blames her for not being the prostitute he thought she was. There is drama to follow in which Kane blames her for being too attractive and refuses to let the heroine move on with her life and blah, blah, angst, angst. Not a good book and not nearly as comical as some of Mason's other earlier stories (with stereotype after cliche after ridiculous situation).

This is a busy little book... a lot of plots and subplots and extra characters. They bounce across the country quite rapidly. Very high-energy and requires paying attention to detail.
Wel leuk, maar niet bijzonder,..veel avontuur, ik vond kane gewoon soft en Glenna soms ook,..de hoeren vond ik wel leuk hahahahahahaha,..het was wel een leuk verhaal hoor, maar ook te lang!
“I won’t cheat you, Glenna,” Kane Morgan swore in the heat of passion. “I promise you’ll find only pleasure in my arms.” And pleasure – searing, breathtaking, exquisite pleasure – was what she did find as Kane took her innocence amidst the whispering pines of the Colorado wilderness. Lovely, flame-haired Glenna longed to give him her soul as well as her body, but she had come west to avenge her father’s death, and she could not promise her heart until she’d brought his murderer to justice. Caught in a trap of her own making, estranged from the only man she would ever love, Glenna prayed he would return to make good his passionate vows. For only in Kane’s strong arms could she find the sweet ecstasy of Promised Splendor.
