About the author

Connie Mason or Cara Miles is the best-selling author of more than fifty historical romances and novellas. Her tales of passion and adventure are set in exotic as well as American locales. Connie was named Story Teller of the Year in 1990 by Romantic Times and was awarded Career Achievement award in the Western category by Romantic Times in 1994. Connie makes her home in Tarpon Springs, Florida with her husband Jerry.

Prior to her first published work in 1984, Connie was a full time homemaker. Always an avid reader, writing was one of Connie's dreams.

In 1995 Connie was featured on a segment of the CBS news show 48 Hours, a television production that devoted an entire program to the romance novel industry. Connie was also featured in an article published by National Inquirer.

In addition to writing and traveling, Connie enjoys telling anyone who will listen about her three children and nine grandchildren, and sharing memories of her years living abroad in Europe and Asia as the wife of a career serviceman. In her spare time Connie enjoys reading, dancing, playing bridge and freshwater fishing with her husband.

As typical of Connie Mason’s heroes, there has to be a scene where hero slept with another woman which could have been omitted. Except that this time it happens before he meets the heroine. Either way, I could always make do without those OW scenes! But other than that, this is probably my most favourite book from Connie Mason. It’s a heartfelt story about thr struggle heroine has, being a single mother of one and all, trying to keep her son from being taken away from the ruthless rich tycoon father-in-law. The hero is hired by him to locate Bella and her son’s whereabout and bring the son back to the grandfather. As a reward, he’ll be granted a bounty or thousands of dollars and that money will be put into releasing hiring a lawyer (as his younger brother is in jail for a crime not of his own doing). Little does he know that this task will be the hardest he’d ever taken on as a Pinkerton agent. To fall in love. Hard. I have loved the book until the point of their marriage and everything else kinda fell … flat with Bella’s stubborness. I also abhorred the fact that Casey wandered off to a salon during the night of their argument and allowed a saloon dancer to sit on his lap (gosh, why all Connie Mason has to be stereotypical like this where heroes want to find other woman to forget about the heroine bla bla bla)!

This book is a reminiscence of one of my favourite HR books of all time : Montana Born and Bred by Alexis Harrington as it follows the same premise of a single mother of a boy, running away from the boy’s lecherous family members and the hero too, was hired by the boy’s family to return him home.

Set in 1876, Placerville, could be Texas. I enjoyed this romantic western and the characters were well developed. Belle took her son and ran from her evil and very wealthy father-n-law. She became a business owner of a diner. Casey was a Pinkerton agent hired to track down the grandson and return him to the father-n-law.

Nice story. No twists, but still a good snuggle up, western romance.
