A Guinea Pig Pride & Prejudice

Rate this book
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single guinea pig in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

It is a truth personally acknowledged by Mrs. Bennet that all five of her furry daughters--Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia--are in need of husbands.

To her mother's grave disappointment, Elizabeth Bennet is headstrong and won't take just anyone, especially not the haughty Mr. Darcy.* Elizabeth blames the arrogant gentleman for steering Mr. Bingley, one of the rare men in possession of a good fortune, away from her older sister Jane. But when boy-crazy Kitty and Lydia fall in with the wrong crowd, it is Darcy who saves the day--and the Bennet family honor--and wins Elizabeth's tiny, rapidly beating rodent heart.

This delightful retelling of Pride and Prejudice is illustrated throughout with full color photos of the finest guinea pig actors working today. Costumers familiar with the elegant curves of the guinea pig form have tailored lush period looks. And of course, it is the love between guinea pigs that can best illustrate the depth of feeling between Jane Austen's Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

* The guinea pig playing Darcy struggled with looking supercilious, though rest assured, when carrots were removed from the elegant sets, the actor was able to still his nose long enough to look down it, and once he donned his summer-weight waistcoat, he made a fine and dashing Darcy.

Tja, was soll ich sagen?

What a cute idea! This was my stocking stuffer and it was the best.

It was fun to get a condensed version of Pride & Prejudice told with pictures of guinea pigs in character, costume, and setting. Is it bad to admit that I thought Elsie guinea pig playing Wickham was cutest?

A neat little gift for the Austen lover for sure.

I’ve started to look for different types of books at the library. This was weird and right up my alley. Guinea pigs and a pride and prejudice retelling. This melted my cold heart. I loved it so much! Adorable pictures of Guinea pigs and a wonderful retelling of one of my favorite stories.

Mrs Bennet has five unmarried daughters in want of husbands and in this abridgment of the Jane Austen classic the lead role of Elizabeth is played by Molly, with other cute little guinea pigs playing her sisters. The other main protagonist is played by Hollie, that is of course Mr Darcy. And Darcy is introduced to the Bennet family by Mr Bingley, played by Billie.

As in real life, well the original 'Pride and Prejudice anyway, Mr Darcy entrances every lady he encounters but at first he is not enchanted with Elizabeth. But as time passes he realises that there is a lot more to her than he first imagined and their friendship, and love, begins to grow.

It all happens just as in Jane Austen's world with all the guinea pigs looking exceedingly cute in their 18th century costumes and if the reader does not fancy the complete P&P, this version gives a very good flavour of all the happenings.

Kudos must go to photographer Belmondo who must have had to work extremely hard not only to get the poses of the guinea pigs right but to dress them so splendidly. I feel Jane would have been pleased, even if a little amused!

This is such a cute idea! But while I know the images must have taken a lot of prep, I just wanted a little more detail.

I love Jane Austen.
I love Guinea Pigs.
And I love off-the-wall humour.
So I couldn't ignore this so peculiar fan-fiction of Pride and Prejudice and had to buy it!

As a vet, I've often wondered why I was never miffed by animals in disguise: wasn't it a lack of respect for animals, to put their bodies in pieces of clothing they didn't need, just for fun?
The answer is simple: most of people who play this way with their pets, taking time and patience to fashion small clothes or armor or anything so bizarre, and managing to put the small wriggling bodies in the aforementioned pieces of clothing, before taking photos or videos, are doting owners, in love with their pets, and solicitous of their specials needs.

This book, which closes with a reminder about abandoned pets, and the importance of supporting our local rescue centers, is a very good example.
Looking at the photos of the actors, Molly, Hollie, Mabel and Billie, beautiful and plump as they are, nobody will believe anything else than tender and attentive care have been given to them!

About the book.
Well, I loved it.
Firstly it's a very beautiful small album, with beautiful paper and colours, elegant and refined.
The text on each left page is a summary of the book, very condensed of course, in a quite funny classic style. I appreciated very much the clever adaptation of Alex Goodwin.
On each right page there is a photo, with a citation of the original book. The costumes are fantastic, the work of Tess Gammel is fantastic, bravo!

It's a very short read, of course, but a sweet and respectful book, of the author's work but also of animals' well-being.

I'll be laughing about this probably forever. I don't know why it exists, but I'm super glad it does. And that I have friends in places to 1. have access to this book and 2. know I'd love it. Kudos to Rachael for this one!

I absolutely have nothing with the original Pride And Prejudice, if anything I tried reading it, and dropped it quite fast. But I still love reading books like this, which turn a boring book inside out and make something awesome out of it. Plus I just love guinea pigs! They are super adorable!

Because that is what this book did. It made something that is utterly boring and a snoozefest into a book of fun and love. Each 2 pages feature a small part of the Pride and Prejudice book, and on the right side you would have one or two guinea pigs in costume with a small dialogue part at the bottom of the page. It is absolutely adorable and I was just squealing at the cuteness of these little critters.

Of course, since this is only 50 pages, the story is really condensed to just the basic story, but I have to say that I like that. You know what happened in the story, you know what happened to Jane, Elizabeth, Darcy, without having to go through endless pages of talking and boringness.

I love the idea of using Guinea Pigs for this, dressing them up, and letting them act parts of the story. I hope that this author/photographer will be making more books, maybe with different animals, though I wouldn't mind guinea pigs only books. :)

Would I recommend this book? Yes, it is a really nice book and very creative. Young and old will love it.

I bought this for my daughter as I thought it might encourage her to read Austen's novel when she's a bit older. We read it together in one sitting and she thoroughly enjoyed it. If you like guinea pigs, then you will enjoy the photographs of them dressed up in little Georgian costumes, bonnets and such like. Unfortunately, my favourite character, Mr Bennet, has been edited out, which makes the guinea pig version less amusing to read than the original.

Mr. Darcy has never looked better than he does in the pages of this charming little book. The essence of the original story is here, but the illustrations are all brand new. These guinea pigs take their work seriously, and did their utmost to bring the story to life. With detailed costumes and delightful posing, this is art at its best. Unique and unmatched in its creativity.

A lot of animal humor books try too hard to be funny, and end up being. . .not. . .funny. At all. This is not one of those books! It's super adorable, and does a surprisingly good job of condensing Jane Austen's novel. Some characters get left out, but you can only do so much in 56 pages.

Listen, if you don't want to see Guinea pigs dressed up and enacting scenes from Pride & Prejudice, I don't know what to tell you.

The best one is definitely Wickham, wherein his intriguing appearance is described and juxtaposed with a very intriguing Guinea Pig in a dashing red coat.

A++ highly recommend.
