Bill Brown walked out of the courtroom-free, but under the shadow of suspicion. As a supposed Red, he could be sent into a Midwest territory where actual Communists were suspected of conducting a vicious experiment. It might be any of a dozen Beach Haven residents who were preparing to stay on after the carnival season was over. (From the book)
