About the author

Jerry Jennings started his musical career by performing in local bands and touring overseas. In the early 80's, he decided to start a recording studio Company (Logic Surge Music) with the ever so popular Fostex 4 track recorder. During this time he earned his AA in music and continued writing originals, and married his wife, Jane. He released his first of three instrumental jazz/rock/fusion CD's entitled "The Good Part of a Pencil," "Signs of Humanity," and the most recently released cd produced by Ronnie Montrose, "Shortcut to the Center". In 1994, out of pure necessity, Jerry wrote his first book "The Guitarist's Link to Sight Reading", the #1 Guide to Understanding Studio Charts. He needed to be fluent in reading charts to become a hired studio musician and there was nothing on the market for established players that didn't know how to read music (so many self taught guitarist' out there could easily use this book). After getting great reviews on his style and working man's sense, he decided to team up with well know local talent, Erik Kleven, and write "The Bassist's Link to Sight Reading." He did this once more with Ken Ballinger for "The Drummer's Link to Sight Reading" all with the same concept. With these titles picked up by Music Sales Publishing Company, he then ventured off to writing "Classic Rock Rudiments for Lead Guitar", "Guitar 1 Start Out Jammin'", "Triad Magic-An Introduction to Guitar Chord Theory", and finally "Beginner Guitar Complete Course". All five of these books include original compositions on Cd or DVD. When the contract was up with Music Sales, Jerry and his bride decided to take on the publishing duties themselves. Jane does the layout, cover design, bookkeeping, shipping, marketing, advertising, and website development. Together, along with their daughter Julia, they run Jennings Publishing Company.

I met Jerry Jennings at a convention, and since I had just started bass and needed to learn note reading for the school band (everyone needs a bass player..) I picked this up. First off, this book will not teach you bass... you'll need to know how to play bass already or have a teacher because this book only teaches note reading and writing. But it does that very well. This book has plenty of exercises in plenty of styles with writing pages to go along.

I learned a lot from this book and had fun while doing so, however like I said earlier: it will not teach you bass. But for those who want to learn note reading but not how to hold a bass, then this is for you.
