Frequent cruiser Joy, 63, was supposed to go on an Arctic cruise with her husband Tom for their fortieth wedding anniversary. Now widowed for more than a year, Joy is convinced by their daughter to go on the cruise anyway.
Retired teacher Henry, 70, is a lifelong bachelor who wants to fulfill his dream of seeing the Northern Lights. This is his first time on a cruise and he isn't quite sure what to expect.
Leticia and Jim have come on the cruise as a gift to each other. With Jim’s terminal illness getting worse, they want one last happy holiday together.
There are some more passengers and some cruise employees in the story. As they journey along the Arctic, we get to see their personalities, their intimate secrets, their hopes and apprehensions, and their bond (or lack thereof) with their fellow travellers.
The story comes to us from the third-person perspectives of several characters, with the narration shifting across major and minor characters steadily.
