This is the sort of book to dip in and out of. It is a collection of almost 30 articles examining four centuries of black writing. Those that I read (and I admit to not reading the whole book) were engagingly written and clear in a way that made them accessible to anyone interested in the subject. Ideally this is best used as a reference work and readers would do well to copy or scan the relevant chapter(s), copyright permitting of course.
